Cosmology, Decoherence and the Second Law

We consider quantum decoherence and entropy increase in early universe cosmology. We first study decoherence in a discrete bipartite quantum system for which a single qubit gets entangled with an environment and the entropy increase is correlated with the decay of the off-diagonal terms of the reduced density matrix. We compare this system with continuous systems relevant for cosmology for which there is a natural external intervention, corresponding to the time-dependent separation between the sub- and super-horizon inflationary fluctuations. We find, in this case, that the off-diagonal terms of the density matrix, in a field basis, do not decay as sometimes assumed in cosmological set-ups. Nevertheless, following a recent treatment in terms of open Effective Field Theories (EFTs), we compute the entanglement entropy for a Gaussian state and show that it actually increases monotonically ($\dot S>0$) during the accelerated phases ($\ddot a>0$ with $a(t)$ the scale factor). We generalise this result to include non-Gaussian states and briefly discuss the relevance of computing the von Neumann entropy as compared to the thermodynamic entropy.

Quantum Transitions, Detailed Balance, Black Holes and Nothingness

We consider vacuum transitions by bubble nucleation among 4D vacua with different values and signs of the cosmological constant $Λ$, including both up and down tunnelings. Following the Hamiltonian formalism, we explicitly compute the decay rates for all possible combinations of initial and final values of $Λ$ and find that up-tunneling is allowed starting not only from dS spacetime but also from AdS and Minkowski spacetimes. We trace the difference with the Euclidean approach, where these transitions are found to be forbidden, to the difference of treating the latter spacetimes as pure (vacuum) states rather than mixed states with correspondingly vanishing or infinite entropy. We point out that these transitions are best understood as limits of the corresponding transitions with black holes in the zero mass limit $M\rightarrow 0$. We find that detailed balance is satisfied provided we use the Hartle-Hawking sign of the wave function for nucleating space-times. In the formal limit $Λ\rightarrow -\infty $, the transition rates for AdS to dS agree with both the Hartle-Hawking and Vilenkin amplitudes for the creation of dS from nothing. This is consistent with a proposal of Brown and Dahlen to define `nothing' as AdS in this limit. For $M\neq 0$ detailed balance is satisfied only in a range of mass values. We compute the bubble trajectory after nucleation and find that, contrary to the $M=0$ case, the trajectory does not correspond to the open universe slicing of dS. We briefly discuss the relevance of our results to the string landscape.

Density Perturbations and Primordial Non-Gaussianities in a Closed Universe

The spatial curvature of the universe is not yet known. Even though at present the Universe is very close to being essentially flat and most signatures of curvature appear to have been diluted by inflation, if the number of e-foldings during inflation is close to the minimum necessary to explain the horizon problem, the curvature of the universe may have left imprints in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) that may be observable, especially at large angles. Motivated by general results on quantum cosmology and using effective field theory techniques, we develop a general approach for analytically computing the power spectrum of density perturbations for a closed universe. Following a Hamiltonian formalism we determine the corresponding Bunch-Davis vacuum, find analytic expressions for two-point functions and higher correlators, expanding in terms of $S^3$ harmonics. In particular we concentrate on potential implications for observable non-Gaussianities. We consider cubic interactions as well as higher derivative ones to explore the consequence of a speed of sound $c_s\neq 1$. For large multipoles curvature effects are negligible and reproduce the known results for the flat case. However, they depart from the flat space result for relatively small multipoles. In this limit non-Gaussianities may lead to potentially observable values of $f_{\rm NL}$. In particular we find terms in $f_{\rm NL}$ that are absent in the flat space case, which are important at large scales and may be observable even if a long period of inflation dilutes the curvature. We compare our results with previous discussions in the literature.

Asymptotic safety, string theory and the weak gravity conjecture

We propose a scenario with string theory in the deep ultraviolet, an intermediate asymptotically safe scaling regime for gravity and matter, and the Standard Model in the infrared. This could provide a new perspective to tackle challenges of the two models: For instance, the gravitational Renormalization Group flow could connect a negative microscopic to a positive macroscopic cosmological constant, potentially rendering string theory on an anti-de Sitter background observationally viable. Further, the unitarity of a string-theoretic ultraviolet completion could be inherited by an asymptotically safe fixed point, despite the presence of higher-order interactions. We discuss necessary conditions on the scale of asymptotic safety and the string scale for our scenario to be viable. As a first test, we explore the weak-gravity conjecture in the context of asymptotically safe gravity.

De Sitter vs Quintessence in String Theory

De Sitter solutions have been recently conjectured to be incompatible with quantum gravity. In this paper we critically assess the progress and challenges of different mechanisms to obtain de Sitter vacua in string compactifications and compare them to quintessence models. We argue that, despite recent criticisms, de Sitter models reached a level of concreteness and calculational control which has been improving over time. On the other hand, building string models of quintessence appears to be more challenging and requires additional fine-tuning. We discuss the tension between the swampland conjecture and the Higgs potential and find examples which can evade fifth-force bounds even if they seem very hard to realise in string theory. We also comment on the tension with low-redshift data and explore ultra-light axions from string theory as dark energy candidates.

$α'$ Inflation: Moduli Stabilisation and Observable Tensors from Higher Derivatives

The leading order dynamics of the type IIB Large Volume Scenario is characterised by the interplay between $α'$ and non-perturbative effects which fix the overall volume and all local blow-up modes leaving (in general) several flat directions. In this paper we show that, in an arbitrary Calabi-Yau with at least one blow-up mode resolving a point-like singularity, any remaining flat directions can be lifted at subleading order by the inclusions of higher derivative $α'$ corrections. We then focus on simple fibred cases with one remaining flat direction which can behave as an inflaton if its potential is generated by both higher derivative $α'$ and winding loop corrections. Natural values of the underlying parameters give a spectral index in agreement with observational data and a tensor-to-scalar ratio of order $r=0.01$ which could be observed by forthcoming CMB experiments. Dangerous corrections from higher dimensional operators are suppressed due to the presence of an approximate non-compact shift symmetry.

On KKLT/CFT and LVS/CFT Dualities

We present a general discussion of the properties of three dimensional CFT duals to the AdS string theory vacua coming from type IIB Calabi-Yau flux compactifications. Both KKLT and Large Volume Scenario (LVS) minima are considered. In both cases we identify the large `central charge', find a separation of scales between the radius of AdS and the size of the extra dimensions and show that the dual CFT has only a limited number of operators with small conformal dimension. Differences between the two sets of duals are identified. Besides a different amount of supersymmetry ($\mathcal{N}=1$ for KKLT and $\mathcal{N}=0$ for LVS) we find that the LVS CFT dual has only one scalar operator with $\mathcal{O}(1)$ conformal dimension, corresponding to the volume modulus, whereas in KKLT the whole set of $h^{1,1}$ Kähler moduli have this property. Also, the maximal number of degrees of freedom is estimated to be larger in LVS than in KKLT duals. In both cases we explicitly compute the coefficient of the logarithmic contribution to the one-loop vacuum energy which should be invariant under duality and therefore provides a non-trivial prediction for the dual CFT. This coefficient takes a particularly simple form in the KKLT case.

On Moduli Spaces in $\bf{AdS_4}$ Supergravity

We study the structure of the supersymmetric moduli spaces of ${\cal N}=1$ and ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity theories in $AdS_4$ backgrounds. In the ${\cal N}=1$ case, the moduli space cannot be a complex submanifold of the Kähler field space, but is instead real with respect to the inherited complex structure. In ${\cal N}=2$ supergravity the same result holds for the vector multiplet moduli space, while the hypermultiplet moduli space is a Kähler submanifold of the quaternionic-Kähler field space. These findings are in agreement with AdS/CFT considerations.

Heterotic Moduli Stabilisation

We perform a systematic analysis of moduli stabilisation for weakly coupled heterotic string theory compactified on manifolds which are Calabi-Yau up to alpha' effects. We review how to fix all geometric and bundle moduli in a supersymmetric way by fractional fluxes, the requirement of a holomorphic gauge bundle, D-terms, higher order perturbative contributions to W, non-perturbative and threshold effects. We then show that alpha' corrections to K lead to new stable Minkowski (or dS) vacua where the complex structure moduli Z and the dilaton are fixed supersymmetrically, while the fixing of the Kahler moduli at a lower scale leads to spontaneous SUSY breaking. The minimum lies at moderately large volumes of all geometric moduli, at a perturbative string coupling and at the right value of the GUT coupling. We also give a dynamical derivation of anisotropic compactifications which allow for gauge coupling unification around 10^16 GeV. The gravitino mass can be anywhere between the GUT and TeV scale depending on the fixing of the Z-moduli. In general, these are fixed by turning on background fluxes, leading to a gravitino mass around the GUT scale since the heterotic 3-form flux does not contain enough freedom to tune W to small values. Moreover accommodating the observed value of the cosmological constant (CC) is a challenge. Low-energy SUSY could instead be obtained in particular situations where the gauge bundle is holomorphic only at a point-like sub-locus of Z-moduli space, or where the number of Z-moduli is small (like orbifold models), since in these cases one may fix all moduli without turning on any quantised flux. However tuning the CC is even more of a challenge in these cases. Another option is to focus on non-complex manifolds since these allow for new geometric fluxes which can be used to tune W and the CC, even if their moduli space is presently only poorly understood.

Dark Matter density and the Higgs mass in LVS String Phenomenology

The Large Volume Scenario for getting a non-supersymmetric vacuum in type IIB string theory leads, through the Weyl anomaly and renormalization group running, to an interesting phenomenology. However, for gravitino masses below 500 TeV there are cosmological problems and the resulting Higgs mass is well below 124 GeV. Here we discuss the phenomenology and cosmology for gravitino masses which are $\gtrsim$ 500 TeV. We find that not only is the cosmological modulus problem alleviated and the right value for dark matter density obtained, but also the Higgs mass is in the 122-125 GeV range. However the spectrum of SUSY particles will be too heavy to be observed at the LHC.

We search for phenomenologically viable vacua of IIB string flux compactifications on Calabi-Yau orientifolds with a single Kaehler modulus. We perform both analytic studies and numerical searches in order to find models with de Sitter vacua and TeV-scale SUSY particle phenomenology.

Testing the gaugino AMSB model at the Tevatron via slepton pair production

Gaugino AMSB models-- wherein scalar and trilinear soft SUSY breaking terms are suppressed at the GUT scale while gaugino masses adopt the AMSB form-- yield a characteristic SUSY particle mass spectrum with light sleptons along with a nearly degenerate wino-like lightest neutralino and quasi-stable chargino. The left- sleptons and sneutrinos can be pair produced at sufficiently high rates to yield observable signals at the Fermilab Tevatron. We calculate the rate for isolated single and dilepton plus missing energy signals, along with the presence of one or two highly ionizing chargino tracks. We find that Tevatron experiments should be able to probe gravitino masses into the ~55 TeV range for inoAMSB models, which corresponds to a reach in gluino mass of over 1100 GeV.

Gaugino Anomaly Mediated SUSY Breaking: phenomenology and prospects for the LHC

We examine the supersymmetry phenomenology of a novel scenario of supersymmetry (SUSY) breaking which we call Gaugino Anomaly Mediation, or inoAMSB. This is suggested by recent work on the phenomenology of flux compactified type IIB string theory. The essential features of this scenario are that the gaugino masses are of the anomaly-mediated SUSY breaking (AMSB) form, while scalar and trilinear soft SUSY breaking terms are highly suppressed. Renormalization group effects yield an allowable sparticle mass spectrum, while at the same time avoiding charged LSPs; the latter are common in models with negligible soft scalar masses, such as no-scale or gaugino mediation models. Since scalar and trilinear soft terms are highly suppressed, the SUSY induced flavor and CP-violating processes are also suppressed. The lightest SUSY particle is the neutral wino, while the heaviest is the gluino. In this model, there should be a strong multi-jet +etmiss signal from squark pair production at the LHC. We find a 100 fb^{-1} reach of LHC out to m_{3/2}\sim 118 TeV, corresponding to a gluino mass of \sim 2.6 TeV. A double mass edge from the opposite-sign/same flavor dilepton invariant mass distribution should be visible at LHC; this, along with the presence of short-- but visible-- highly ionizing tracks from quasi-stable charginos, should provide a smoking gun signature for inoAMSB.
