The volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a Dehn-filled manifold

For a compact 3-manifold $N$ with non-empty boundary, Zickert gave a combinatorial formula for computing the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a boundary parabolic representation $π_1(N)\rightarrow \mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$. In this paper, we introduce a notion of deformed Ptolemy varieties and extend the formula of Zickert to a representation that is not necessarily boundary parabolic. This allows us to compute the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representation of a closed 3-manifold.

On the potential functions for a link diagram

For an oriented diagram of a link $L$ in the 3-sphere, Cho and Murakami defined the potential function whose critical point, slightly different from the usual sense, corresponds to a boundary parabolic $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representation of $π_1(S^3 \setminus L)$. They also showed that the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of such a representation can be computed from the potential function with its partial derivatives. In this paper, we extend the potential function to a $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representation that is not necessarily boundary parabolic. Under a mild assumption, it leads us to a combinatorial formula for computing the volume and Chern-Simons invariant of a $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{C})$-representation of a closed 3-manifold.

Octahedral developing of knot complement I: pseudo-hyperbolic structure

It is known that a knot complement can be decomposed into ideal octahedra along a knot diagram. A solution to the gluing equations applied to this decomposition gives a pseudo-developing map of the knot complement, which will be called a pseudo-hyperbolic structure. In this paper, we study these in terms of segment and region variables which are motivated by the volume conjecture so that we can compute complex volumes of all the boundary parabolic representations explicitly. We investigate the octahedral developing and holonomy representation carefully, and obtain a concrete formula of Wirtinger generators for the representation and also cusp shape. We demonstrate explicit solutions for $T(2,N)$ torus knots, $J(N,M)$ knots and also for other interesting knots as examples. Using these solutions we can observe the asymptotic behavior of complex volumes and cusp shapes of these knots. We note that this construction works for any knot or link, and reflects systematically both geometric properties of the knot complement and combinatorial aspect of the knot diagram.

Partially abelian representations of knot groups

A knot complement admits a pseudo-hyperbolic structure by solving Thurston's gluing equations for an octahedral decomposition. It is known that a solution to these equations can be described in terms of region variables, also called $w$-variables. In this paper, we consider the case when pinched octahedra appear as a boundary parabolic solution in the decomposition. A $w$-solution with pinched octahedra induces a solution for a new knot obtained by changing the crossing or inserting a tangle at the pinched place. We discuss this phenomenon with corresponding holonomy representations and give some examples including ones obtained from connected sum.
