Thermal axion production at low temperatures: a smooth treatment of the QCD phase transition

We study thermal axion production around the confinement scale. At higher temperatures, we extend current calculations to account for the masses of heavy quarks, whereas we quantify production via hadron scattering at lower temperatures. Matching our results between the two opposite regimes provides us with a continuous axion production rate across the QCD phase transition. We employ such a rate to quantify the axion contribution to the effective number of neutrino species.

Flavor Violating Axions in the Early Universe

Flavor violating axion couplings can be in action before recombination, and they can fill the early universe with an additional radiation component. Working within a model-independent framework, we consider an effective field theory for the axion field and quantify axion production. Current cosmological data exclude already a fraction of the available parameter space, and the bounds will improve significantly with future CMB-S4 surveys. Remarkably, we find that future cosmological bounds will be comparable or even stronger than the ones obtained in our terrestrial laboratories.

Dark gauge boson production from neutron stars via nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung

We discuss the dark gauge boson emission from neutron stars via nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung. Through the rigorous treatment of the effective field theory prescription and the thermal effect, we derive the relevant couplings of dark gauge bosons to hadrons in medium. As a specific example, the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson scenario is chosen to investigate dark gauge boson emissivities during supernovae and cooling of young neutron stars. From the stellar cooling argument, we obtain the constraints on the $\rm B-L$ gauge coupling for given gauge boson masses in two observations: the duration of the supernova neutrino signal of SN1987A, and the inferred x-ray luminosity of the compact object in the remnant of SN1987A (NS1987A). In particular, the constraint from SN1987A on the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson scenario is revisited. The excluded gauge coupling due to the emission of transverse polarizations is an order of magnitude enhanced compared to the previous derivation. There is also a newly excluded parameter space due to the emission of longitudinal polarizations.

Thermal QCD Axions across Thresholds

Thermal axion production in the early universe goes through several mass thresholds, and the resulting rate may change dramatically across them. Focusing on the KSVZ and DFSZ frameworks for the invisible QCD axion, we perform a systematic analysis of thermal production across thresholds and provide smooth results for the rate. The QCD phase transition is an obstacle for both classes of models. For the hadronic KSVZ axion, we also deal with production at temperatures around the mass of the heavy-colored fermion charged under the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. Within the DFSZ framework, standard model fermions are charged under this symmetry, and additional thresholds are the heavy Higgs bosons masses and the electroweak phase transition. We investigate the cosmological implications with a specific focus on axion dark radiation quantified by an effective number of neutrino species and explore the discovery reach of future CMB-S4 surveys.

Cooling of young neutron stars and dark gauge bosons

The standard cooling scenario in the presence of nucleon superfluidity fits rather well to the observation of the neutron stars. It implies that the stellar cooling arguments could place a stringent constraint on the properties of novel particles. We study in particular the cooling rate induced by dark gauge bosons for very young neutron stars: remnants of Cassiopeia A and SN1987A. The cooling is dominantly contributed either by the nucleon pair breaking and formation in the core or by the electron bremsstrahlung in the crust, depending on the age of the stars and the form of the couplings. We compute how much the cooling curve of the young neutron stars could be modified by the extra dark gauge boson emission and obtain the bound for the dark gauge boson when its mass is lower than $\mathcal{O}(0.1)\,{\rm MeV}$; for the dark photon we find the mixing parameter times its mass $\varepsilon m_{γ^\prime} < 1.5 \times 10^{-8}\,{\rm MeV}$ and for the ${\rm U}(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson its coupling to nucleons and electrons $e^\prime < 10^{-13}$. We also discuss the possibility that the rapid cooling of Cas A might provide a hint for the existence of the ${\rm U}(1)_{B-L}$ gauge boson.

Vector dark matter from a gauged $SU(2)$ symmetry

We propose a scenario of dark sector described by a hidden $SU(2)$ gauge symmetry which is broken by a vacuum expectation value(VEV) of a scalar multiplet. We discuss a general mass relation among $SU(2)$ gauge bosons after spontaneous symmetry breaking which is determined by weight of gauge group representation associated with a scalar multiplet developing VEV. Then a model with quintet and triplet scalar fields is discussed in which hidden gauge boson can be dark matter(DM) stabilized by remnant discrete $Z_2$ symmetry and resonant dark matter annihilation is realized by mass relation between DM and mediator. We estimate relic density and spin independent DM-nucleon scattering cross section searching for allowed parameter region.

Axion and neutrino mass from a hidden gauge symmetry model

We propose a model of dark sector described by gauged hidden $U(1)_H$ symmetry in which neutrino masses are generated at one-loop level and axion is induced by assigning Peccei-Quinn charge to fermions in dark sector relevantly. Then our scenario connects exotic fermion mass generation, neutrino mass matrix and axion through scalar fields associated with $U(1)_H$ and Peccei-Quinn symmetry breaking. We investigate neutrino mass formula, lepton flavor violation, anomalous magnetic moment of muon, dark matter relic density and axion couplings, which are originated from interactions among our dark sector and the standard model particles.

Gamma-ray spectral modulations induced by photon-ALP-dark photon oscillations

Recently it has been noticed that the Fermi-LAT data of gamma-rays from some galactic pulsars and supernova remnants reveal spectral modulations that might be explained by the conversion of photons to ALPs (axion-like particles) induced by the conventional ALP coupling to photon in the presence of galactic magnetic fields. However the corresponding ALP mass and coupling are in a severe tension with the observational constraints from CAST, SN1987A, and other gamma-ray observations. Motivated by this, we examine an alternative possibility that those spectral modulations are explained by other type of ALP coupling involving both the ordinary photon and a massless dark photon, when nonzero background dark photon gauge fields are assumed. We find that our scheme results in oscillations among the photon, ALP, and dark photon, which can explain the gamma-ray spectral modulations of galactic pulsars or supernova remnants, while satisfying the known observational constraints.

Axion scales and couplings with Stückelberg mixing

We study the axion field range and low energy couplings in models with Stückelberg mixing between axions and $U(1)$ gauge bosons. It is noted that the gauge-invariant axion combination $ξ$ in the model is periodic $modulo$ an appropriate shift of gauge-variant axions eaten by the massive $U(1)$ gauge bosons, which in some cases makes the connection between the field range and the low energy couplings less transparent. We derive the field range of $ξ$ for generic forms of the axion kinetic metric and $U(1)$ charges, and identify the field basis for which all non-derivative couplings of $ξ$ are quantized in a manner manifestly consistent with the periodicity of $ξ$. Generically Stückelberg mixing reduces the axion field range. In particular, the mixings between $N$ axions and $(N-1)$ $U(1)$ gauge bosons typically result in an exponentially reduced field range $M_ξ={\cal O}\left({k^{-(N-1)} f}/{\sqrt{N!}}\right)$ for the residual gauge-invariant axion $ξ$ in the limit $N\gg 1$, where $f$ and $k$ denote the typical decay constant and the root mean square of the $U(1)$ gauge charges of the original $N$ axions. Using simple examples, we study also the reparameterization-invariant physical quantities such as the axion effective potential and 1PI couplings to gauge bosons, which are determined by the reparameterization-dependent axion couplings in the model.

Axion-photon-dark photon oscillation and its implication for 21 cm observation

We examine the resonant conversion of axion-like particle (ALP) or dark photon to the electromagnetic photon in the early Universe, which takes place due to the ALP-photon-dark photon oscillations in background dark photon gauge fields. It is noted that the corresponding conversion probability can have an unusual spectral feature which allows strong conversion at low frequency domain, but has negligible conversion at high frequencies above certain critical frequency which is determined by the ALP coupling to dark photon and the strength of background dark photon gauge field. We apply this scheme to heat up the 21 cm photons without affecting the Cosmic Microwave Background, which can explain the tentative absorption signal of 21 cm photons detected recently by the EDGES experiment.

Minimal Flavor Violation with Axion-like Particles

We revisit the flavor-changing processes involving an axion-like particle (ALP) in the context of generic ALP effective lagrangian with a discussion of possible UV completions providing the origin of the relevant bare ALP couplings. We focus on the minimal scenario that ALP has flavor-conserving couplings at tree level, and the leading flavor-changing couplings arise from the loops involving the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model fermions. We note that such radiatively generated flavor-changing ALP couplings can be easily suppressed in field theoretic ALP models with sensible UV completion. We discuss also the implication of our result for string theoretic ALP originating from higher-dimensional $p$-form gauge fields, for instance for ALP in large volume string compactification scenario.

Dark photon relic dark matter production through the dark axion portal

We present a new mechanism to produce the dark photon ($γ'$) in the early universe with a help of the axion ($a$) using a recently proposed dark axion portal. The dark photon, a light gauge boson in the dark sector, can be a relic dark matter if its lifetime is long enough. The main process we consider is a variant of the Primakoff process $f a \to f γ'$ mediated by a photon, which is possible with the axion--photon--dark photon coupling. The axion is thermalized in the early universe because of the strong interaction and it can contribute to the non-thermal dark photon production through the dark axion portal coupling. It provides a two-component dark matter sector, and the relic density deficit issue of the axion dark matter can be addressed by the compensation with the dark photon. The dark photon dark matter can also address the reported 3.5 keV $X$-ray excess via the $γ' \to γa$ decay.

Portal Connecting Dark Photons and Axions

The dark photon and the axion (or axion-like particle) are popular light particles of the hidden sector. Each of them has been actively searched for through the couplings called the vector portal and the axion portal. We introduce a new portal connecting the dark photon and the axion (axion--photon--dark photon, axion--dark photon--dark photon), which emerges in the presence of the two particles. This dark axion portal is genuinely new couplings, not just from a product of the vector portal and the axion portal, because of the internal structure of these couplings. We present a simple model that realizes the dark axion portal and discuss why it warrants a rich phenomenology.

Mini Force: the (B-L) + xY gauge interaction with a light mediator

The relevant phenomenology and the best search schemes of a subelectroweak-scale gauge boson can be vastly different depending on its coupling. For instance, the rare decay into a light gauge boson and the high precision parity test can be sensitive if it has an axial coupling. The minimal gauge extension of the standard model with the U(1)_{B-L + xY} requires only three right-handed neutrinos, well-suited to the current neutrino mass and mixing data, and no additional exotic matter fields. We study the light gauge boson of this symmetry in detail including its axial coupling property from the hypercharge shift.

Natural inflation with multiple sub-Planckian axions

We extend the Kim-Nilles-Peloso (KNP) alignment mechanism for natural inflation to models with $N>2$ axions, which obtains a super-Planckian effective axion decay constant $f_{\textrm{eff}}\gg M_{Pl}$ through an alignment of the anomaly coefficients of multiple axions having sub-Planckian fundamental decay constants $f_0\ll M_{Pl}$. The original version of the KNP mechanism realized with two axions requires that some of the anomaly coefficients should be of the order of $f_{\textrm{eff}}/f_0$, which would be uncomfortably large if $f_{\rm eff}/f_0 \gtrsim {\cal O}(100)$ as suggested by the recent BICEP2 results. We note that the KNP mechanism can be realized with the anomaly coefficients of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ if the number of axions $N$ is large as $N\ln N\gtrsim 2\ln (f_{\textrm{eff}}/f_0)$, in which case the effective decay constant can be enhanced as $f_{\rm eff}/f_0 \sim \sqrt{N !}\,n^{N-1}$ for $n$ denoting the typical size of the integer-valued anomaly coefficients. Comparing to the other multiple axion scenario, the N-flation scenario which requires $N \sim f_{\textrm{eff}}^2/f_0^2$, the KNP mechanism has a virtue of not invoking to a too large number of axions, although it requires a specific alignment of the anomaly coefficients, which can be achieved with a probability of ${\cal O}(f_0/f_{\rm eff})$ under a random choice of the anomaly coefficients. We also present a simple model realizing a multiple axion monodromy along the inflaton direction.
