Spitzer measurements of atomic and molecular abundances in the Type IIP SN 2005af

We present results based on Spitzer Space Telescope mid-infrared (3.6-30 micron) observations of the nearby IIP supernova 2005af. We report the first ever detection of the SiO molecule in a Type IIP supernova. Together with the detection of the CO fundamental, this is an exciting finding as it may signal the onset of dust condensation in the ejecta. From a wealth of fine-structure lines we provide abundance estimates for stable Ni, Ar, and Ne which, via spectral synthesis, may be used to constrain nucleosynthesis models.

Early-time Spitzer observations of the type II-Plateau supernova, 2004dj

We present mid-infrared observations with the Spitzer Space Telescope of the nearby type II-P supernova, SN 2004dj, at epochs of 89 to 129 days. We have obtained the first mid-IR spectra of any supernova apart from SN 1987A. A prominent [NiII] 6.64 micron line is observed, from which we deduce that the mass of stable nickel must be at least 2.2e10(-4) Msun. We also observe the red wing of the CO-fundamental band. We relate our findings to possible progenitors and favour an evolved star, most likely a red supergiant, with a probable initial mass between ~10 and 15 Msun.

Diffuse Interstellar Bands in NGC 1448

We present spectroscopic VLT/UVES observations of two emerging supernovae, the Type Ia SN 2001el and the Type II SN 2003hn, in the spiral galaxy NGC 1448. Our high resolution and high signal-to-noise spectra display atomic lines of Ca II, Na I, Ti II and K I in the host galaxy. In the line of sight towards SN 2001el, we also detect over a dozen diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) within NGC 1448. These DIBs have strengths comparable to low reddening galactic lines of sight, albeit with some variations. In particular, a good match is found with the line of sight towards the sigma type diffuse cloud (HD 144217). The DIBs towards SN 2003hn are significantly weaker, and this line of sight has also lower sodium column density. The DIB central velocities show that the DIBs towards SN 2001el are closely related to the strongest interstellar Ca II and Na I components, indicating that the DIBs are preferentially produced in the same cloud. The ratio of the 5797 and 5780 DIB strengths (r~0.14) suggests a rather high UV field in the DIB environment towards SN 2001el. We also note that the extinction estimates obtained from the sodium lines using multiple line fitting agree with reddening estimates based on the colors of the Type Ia SN 2001el.

High-resolution optical studies of nearby Type Ia supernovae

Since April 2000, a program using the ESO/VLT/UVES to search for early circumstellar signatures from nearby supernovae has been conducted. Until now, two Type Ia supernovae have been observed, SNe 2000cx and 2001el. Here we report on preliminary results for SNe 2001el, and we discuss how the observations can be used together with detailed modeling to derive an upper limit on the putative wind from the progenitor system. For a hydrogen-rich wind with velocity 10 km/s, the mass loss rate for the progenitor system of SN 2001el is less than 1O^{-5} solar masses per year.

Searching for obscured supernovae in nearby starburst galaxies

We are currently carrying out a K_s band survey for core-collapse supernovae in the nuclear (central kpc) regions of nearby starburst galaxies with the INGRID near-IR camera at the WHT. In this article we concentrate in describing mainly the observations and the real time processing of the SN search data, which makes use of the ING's integrated data flow system.
