Some Geometric Properties of the Subordination Function Associated to an Operator-Valued Free Convolution Semigroup

In his article "On the free convolution with a semicircular distribution," Biane found very useful characterizations of the boundary values of the imaginary part of the Cauchy-Stieltjes transform of the free additive convolution of a probability measure on the real line with a Wigner (semicircular) distribution. Biane's methods were recently extended by Huang to measures which belong to the partial free convolution semigroups introduced by Nica and Speicher. This note further extends some of Biane's methods and results to free convolution powers of operator-valued distributions and to free convolutions with operator-valued semicirculars. In addition, it investigates properties of the Julia-Caratheodory derivative of the subordination functions associated to such semigroups, extending certain results from the article "Partially Defined Semigroups Relative to Multiplicative Free Convolution" by Bercovici and the author (reference [7] in the text).

Outliers in the spectrum of large deformed unitarily invariant models

In this paper we characterize the possible outliers in the spectrum of large deformed unitarily invariant additive and multiplicative models, as well as the eigenvectors corresponding to them. We allow both the non-deformed unitarily invariant model and the perturbation matrix to have non-trivial limiting spectral measures and spiked outliers in their spectrum. We uncover a remarkable new phenomenon: a single spike can generate asymptotically several outliers in the spectrum of the deformed model. The free subordination functions play a key role in this analysis.

Outliers in the spectrum of large deformed unitarily invariant models

We investigate the asymptotic behavior of the eigenvalues of the sum A+U*BU, where A and B are deterministic N by N Hermitian matrices having respective limiting compactly supported distributions μ, ν, and U is a random N by N unitary matrix distributed according to Haar measure. We assume that A has a fixed number of fixed eigenvalues (spikes) outside the support of μ, whereas the distances between the other eigenvalues of A and the support of μ, and between the eigenvalues of B and the support of ν, uniformly go to zero as N goes to infinity. We establish that only a particular subset of the spikes will generate some eigenvalues of A+U*BU outside the support of the limiting spectral measure, called outliers. This phenomenon is fully described in terms of free probability involving the subordination function related to the free additive convolution of μ and ν. Only finite rank perturbations had been considered up to now.

The Lebesgue decomposition of the free additive convolution of two probability distributions

We prove that the free additive convolution of two Borel probability measures supported on the real line can have a component that is singular continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure on the real line only if one of the two measures is a point mass. The density of the absolutely continuous part with respect to the Lebesgue measure is shown to be analytic wherever positive and finite. The atoms of the free additive convolution of Borel probability measures on the real line have been described by Bercovici and Voiculescu in a previous paper.

Complex analysis methods in noncommutative probability

In this thesis we study convolutions that arise from noncommutative probability theory. We prove several regularity results for free convolutions, and for measures in partially defined one-parameter free convolution semigroups. We discuss connections between Boolean and free convolutions and, in the last chapter, we prove that any infinitely divisible probability measure with respect to monotonic additive or multiplicative convolution belongs to a one-parameter semigroup with respect to the corresponding convolution. Earlier versions of some of the results in this thesis have already been published, while some others have been submitted for publication. We have preserved almost entirely the specific format for PhD theses required by Indiana University. This adds several unnecessary pages to the document, but we wanted to preserve the specificity of the document as a PhD thesis at Indiana University.
