Generalized BMO-type seminorms and vector-valued Sobolev functions

We establish a pointwise limit theorem for a broad class of pa\-ra\-me\-ter-\-de\-pen\-dent BMO-type seminorms as the parameter tends to zero. By introducing novel BMO-type seminorms, we provide a unified framework that extends several existing results and yields non-distributional characterizations of Sobolev-type spaces, both in the scalar and in the vector-valued setting. More precisely, for any open set $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ and any $p\in (1, \infty)$, we provide a characterization of the Sobolev space $W^{1,p}(Ω; \mathbb{R}^m)$. In addition, we characterize the space $E^{1,p}(Ω;\mathbb{R}^n)$ of $L^p$ maps with $p$-integrable distributional symmetric gradient.\\ Finally, for all $p\in [1, \infty)$, we show that these seminorms converge to integral functionals with convex, $p$-homogeneous integrands associated with the distributional gradient and the symmetric gradient.

On a reverse Kohler-Jobin inequality

We consider the shape optimization problems for the quantities $λ(Ω)T^q(Ω)$, where $Ω$ varies among open sets of $\mathbb{R}^d$ with a prescribed Lebesgue measure. While the characterization of the infimum is completely clear, the same does not happen for the maximization in the case $q>1$. We prove that for $q$ large enough a maximizing domain exists among quasi-open sets and that the ball is optimal among {\it nearly spherical domains}.

A two-phase problem with Robin conditions on the free boundary

We study for the first time a two-phase free boundary problem in which the solution satisfies a Robin boundary condition. We consider the case in which the solution is continuous across the free boundary and we prove an existence and a regularity result for minimizers of the associated variational problem. Finally, in the appendix, we give an example of a class of Steiner symmetric minimizers.

Optimal reinforcing networks for elastic membranes

In this paper we study the optimal reinforcement of an elastic membrane, fixed at its boundary, by means of a network (connected onedimensional structure), that has to be found in a suitable admissible class. We show the existence of an optimal solution that may present multiplicities, that is regions where the optimal structure overlaps. Some numerical simulations are shown to confirm this issue and to illustrate the complexity of the optimal network when their total length becomes large.

Optimal regions for congested transport

We consider a given region $Ω$ where the traffic flows according to two regimes: in a region $C$ we have a low congestion, where in the remaining part $Ω\setminus C$ the congestion is higher. The two congestion functions $H_1$ and $H_2$ are given, but the region $C$ has to be determined in an optimal way in order to minimize the total transportation cost. Various penalization terms on $C$ are considered and some numerical computations are shown.

Optimal location problems with routing cost

In the paper a model problem for the location of a given number $N$ of points in a given region $Ω$ and with a given resources density $ρ(x)$ is considered. The main difference between the usual location problems and the present one is that in addition to the location cost an extra {\it routing cost} is considered, that takes into account the fact that the resources have to travel between the locations on a point-to-point basis. The limit problem as $N\to\infty$ is characterized and some applications to airfreight systems are shown.
