The representation theory of finite sets and correspondences

We investigate correspondence functors, namely the functors from the category of finite sets and correspondences to the category of $k$-modules, where $k$ is a commutative ring. They have various specific properties which do not hold for other types of functors. In particular, if $k$ is a field and if $F$ is a correspondence functor, then $F$ is finitely generated if and only if the dimension of $F(X)$ grows exponentially in terms of the cardinality of the finite set $X$. In such a case, $F$ has finite length. Also, if $k$ is noetherian, then any subfunctor of a finitely generated functor is finitely generated. When $k$ is a field, we give a description of all the simple functors and we determine the dimension of their evaluations at any finite set.A main tool is the construction of a functor associated to any finite lattice $T$. We prove for instance that this functor is projective if and only if the lattice $T$ is distributive. Moreover, it has quotients which play a crucial role in the analysis of simple functors. The special case of total orders yields some more specific results. Several other properties are also discussed, such as projectivity, duality, and symmetry. In an appendix, all the lattices associated to a given poset are described.

Relative $B$-groups

This paper extends the notion of $B$-group to a relative context. For a finite group $K$ and a field $\mathbb{F}$ of characteristic 0, the lattice of ideals of the Green biset functor $\mathbb{F}B_K$ obtained by shifting the Burnside functor $\mathbb{F}B$ by $K$ is described in terms of {\em $B_K$-groups}. It is shown that any finite group $(L,φ)$ over $K$ admits a {\em largest quotient $B_K$-group} $β_K(L,φ)$. The simple subquotients of $\mathbb{F}B_K$ are parametrized by $B_K$-groups, and their evaluations can be precisely determined. Finally, when $p$ is a prime, the restriction $\mathbb{F}B_K^{(p)}$ of $\mathbb{F}B_K$ to finite $p$-groups is considered, and the structure of the lattice of ideals of the Green functor $\mathbb{F}B_K^{(p)}$ is described in full detail. In particular, it is shown that this lattice is always finite.

Tensor product of correspondence functors

As part of the study of correspondence functors, the present paper investigates their tensor product and proves some of its main properties. In particular, the correspondence functor associated to a finite lattice has the structure of a commutative algebra in the tensor category of all correspondence functors.

Simple and projective correspondence functors

A correspondence functor is a functor from the category of finite sets and correspondences to the category of $k$-modules, where $k$ is a commutative ring. We determine exactly which simple correspondence functors are projective. Moreover, we analyze the occurrence of such simple projective functors inside the correspondence functor $F$ associated with a finite lattice and we deduce a direct sum decomposition of $F$.

The algebra of Boolean matrices, correspondence functors, and simplicity

We determine the dimension of every simple module for the algebra of the monoid of all relations on a finite set (i.e. Boolean matrices). This is in fact the same question as the determination of the dimension of every evaluation of a simple correspondence functor. The method uses the theory of such functors developed in [BT2, BT3], as well as some new ingredients in the theory of finite lattices.

Correspondence functors and lattices

A correspondence functor is a functor from the category of finite sets and correspondences to the category of k-modules, where k is a commu-tative ring. A main tool for this study is the construction of a correspondence functor associated to any finite lattice T. We prove for instance that this functor is projective if and only if the lattice T is distributive. Moreover, it has quotients which play a crucial role in the analysis of simple functors. The special case of total orders yields some more specific and complete results.

Correspondence functors and finiteness conditions

We investigate the representation theory of finite sets. The correspondence functors are the functors from the category of finite sets and correspondences to the category of k-modules, where k is a commutative ring. They have various specific properties which do not hold for other types of func-tors. In particular, if k is a field and if F is a correspondence functor, then F is finitely generated if and only if the dimension of F (X) grows exponentially in terms of the cardinality of the finite set X. Moreover, in such a case, F has actually finite length. Also, if k is noetherian, then any subfunctor of a finitely generated functor is finitely generated.

The Whitehead group of (almost) extra-special p-groups with p odd

Let p be an odd prime number. We describe the Whitehead group of all extra-special and almost extra-special p-groups. For this we compute, for any finite p-group P , the subgroup Cl\_1 (ZP) of SK\_1 (ZP), in terms of a genetic basis of P. We also introduce a deflation map Cl\_1 (ZP) $\rightarrow$ Cl\_1 (Z(P/N)) , for a normal subgroup N of P , and show that it is always surjective. Along the way, we give a new proof of the result describing the structure of SK\_1 (ZP), when P is an elementary abelian p-group.

Idempotents of double Burnside algebras, L-enriched bisets, and decomposition of p-biset functors

Let R be a (unital) commutative ring, and G be a finite group with order invertible in R. We introduce new idempotents in the double Burnside algebra RB(G,G), indexed by conjugacy classes of minimal sections of G, i.e. pairs (T,S) of subgroups of G, where S is a normal subgroup of T contained in the Frattini subgroup of T. These idempotents are orthogonal, and their sum is equal to the identity. It follows that for any biset functor F over R, the evaluation F (G) splits as a direct sum of specific R-modules indexed by minimal sections of G, up to conjugation. The restriction of these constructions to the biset category of p-groups, where p is a prime number invertible in R, leads to a decomposition of the category of p-biset functors over R as a direct product of categories F\_L indexed by atoric p-groups L up to isomorphism. We next introduce the notions of L-enriched biset and L-enriched biset functor for an arbitrary finite group L, and show that for an atoric p-group L, the category F\_L is equivalent to the category of L-enriched biset functors defined over elementary abelian p-groups. Finally, the notion of vertex of an indecomposable p-biset functor is introduced (when p is invertible in R), and, when R is a field of characteristic different from p, the objects of the category F\_L are characterized in terms of vertices of their composition factors.

K-theory, genotypes, and biset functors

Let p be an odd prime number. In this paper, we show that the genome $Γ(P)$ of a finite $p$-group $P$, defined as the direct product of the genotypes of all rational irreducible representations of $P$, can be recovered from the first group of $K$-theory $K_1(\mathbb{Q}P)$. It follows that the assignment $P \to Γ(P)$ is a $p$-biset functor. We give an explicit formula for the action of bisets on $Γ$, in terms of generalized transfers associated to left free bisets. Finally, we show that $Γ$ is a rational $p$-biset functor, i.e. that $Γ$ factors through the Roquette category of finite $p$-groups.

On a question of Rickard on tensor product of stably equivalent algebras

Let $\overline\F\_p$ be the algebraic closure of the prime field of characteristic $p$. After observing that the principal block $B$ of $\overline\F\_pPSU(3,p^r)$ is stably equivalent of Morita type to its Brauer correspondent $b$, we show however that the centre of $B$ is not isomorphic as an algebra to the centre of $b$ in the cases $p^r\in\{3,4,5,8\}$. As a consequence, the algebra $B\otimes\_{\overline{\F}\_p}\overline \F\_p[X]/X^p$ is not stably equivalent of Morita type to $b\otimes\_{\overline\F\_p}\overline\F\_p[X]/X^p$ in these cases. This yields a negative answer to a question of Rickard.

Fast decomposition of p-groups in the Roquette category, for p>2

Let p be a prime number. In [9], I introduced the Roquette category R_p of finite p-groups, which is an additive tensor category containing all finite p-groups among its objects. In R_p, every finite p-group P admits a canonical direct summand dP, called the edge of P. Moreover P splits uniquely as a direct sum of edges of Roquette p-groups. In this note, I would like to describe a fast algorithm to obtain such a decomposition, when p is odd. ref: [9] The Roquette category of finite p-groups, J.E.M.S (to appear)

The poset of posets

Let X be a finite set. This paper describes some topological and combinatorial properties of the poset Ω_X of order relations on X. In particular, the homotopy type of all the intervals in Ω_X is precisely determined, and the Möbius function of Ω_X is computed.

The algebra of essential relations on a finite set

Let X be a finite set and let k be a commutative ring. We consider the k-algebra of the monoid of all relations on X, modulo the ideal generated by the relations factorizing through a set of cardinality strictly smaller than Card(X), called inessential relations. This quotient is called the essential algebra associated to X. We then define a suitable nilpotent ideal of the essential algebra and describe completely the structure of the corresponding quotient, a product of matrix algebras over suitable group algebras. In particular, we obtain a description of the Jacobson radical and of all the simple modules for the essential algebra.

Fused Mackey functors

Let $G$ be a finite group. In [HTW], Hambleton, Taylor and Williams have considered the question of comparing Mackey functors for $G$ and biset functors defined on subgroups of $G$ and bifree bisets as morphisms. This paper proposes a different approach to this problem, from the point of view of various categories of $G$-sets. In particular, the category of fused $G$-sets is introduced, as well its category of spans. The fused Mackey functors for $G$ over a commutative ring $R$ are defined as $R$-linear functors from this ($R$-linearized) category of spans to $R$-modules. They form an abelian subcategory of the category of Mackey functors for $G$ over $R$, equivalent (for $R=Z$) to the category to the category of conjugation Mackey functors of [HTW]. The category of fused Mackey functors is also equivalent to the category of modules over the fused Mackey algebra, which is a quotient of the usual Mackey algebra of $G$ over $R$. Reference: [HTW] I. Vanishing evaluations of simple functors

The classification of simple biset functors is known, but the evaluation of a simple biset functor at a finite group G may be zero. We investigate various situations where this happens, as well as cases where this does not occur. We also prove a closed formula for such an evaluation under some restrictive conditions on G.
