Variations on the Tait-Kneser theorem

The classical Tait-Kneser theorem states that the osculating circles of a smooth plane curve, free from curvature extrema, are pairwise disjoint. We prove a number of analogs of this theorem, e.g., for ovals of osculating cubics, osculating polynomials and trigonometric polynomials; in each case, we will obtain a non-differentiable foliation with smooth leaves.

Tire track geometry: variations on a theme

We study closed smooth convex plane curves $Γ$ enjoying the following property: a pair of points $x,y$ can traverse $Γ$ so that the distances between $x$ and $y$ along the curve and in the ambient plane do not change; such curves are called {\it bicycle curves}. Motivation for this study comes from the problem how to determine the direction of the bicycle motion by the tire tracks of the bicycle wheels; bicycle curves arise in the (rare) situation when one cannot determine which way the bicycle went. We discuss existence and non-existence of bicycle curves, other than circles, in particular, obtain restrictions on bicycle curves in terms of the ratio of the length of the arc $xy$ to the perimeter length of $Γ$, the number and location of their vertices, etc. We also study polygonal analogs of bicycle curves, convex equilateral $n$-gons $P$ whose $k$-diagonals all have equal lengths. For some values of $n$ and $k$ we prove the rigidity result that $P$ is a regular polygon, and for some construct flexible bicycle polygons.

Remarks on magnetic flows and magnetic billiards, Finsler metrics and a magnetic analog of Hilbert's fourth problem

We interpret magnetic billiards as Finsler ones and describe an analog of the string construction for magnetic billiards. Finsler billiards for which the law "angle of incidence equals angle of reflection" are described. We characterize the Finsler metrics in the plane whose geodesics are circles of a fixed radius. This is a magnetic analog of Hilbert's fourth problem asking to describe the Finsler metrics whose geodesics are straight lines.

On skew loops, skew branes and quadratic hypersurfaces

A skew brane is an immersed codimension 2 submanifold in affine space, free from pairs of parallel tangent spaces. Using Morse theory, we prove that a skew brane cannot lie on a quadratic hypersurface. We also prove that there are no skew loops on embedded ruled developable discs in 3-space. The paper extends recent work by M. Ghomi and B. Solomon.

Topological robotics: motion planning in projective spaces

We study an elementary problem of topological robotics: rotation of a line, which is fixed by a revolving joint at a base point: one wants to bring the line from its initial position to a final position by a continuous motion in the space. The final goal is to construct an algorithm which will perform this task once the initial and final positions are given. Any such motion planning algorithm will have instabilities, which are caused by topological reasons. A general approach to study instabilities of robot motion was suggested recently by the first named author. With any path-connected topological space X one associates a number TC(X), called the topological complexity of X. This number is of fundamental importance for the motion planning problem: TC(X) determines character of instabilities which have all motion planning algorithms in X. In the present paper we study the topological complexity of real projective spaces. In particular we compute TC(RP^n) for all n<24. Our main result is that (for n distinct from 1, 3, 7) the problem of calculating of TC(RP^n) is equivalent to finding the smallest k such that RP^n can be immersed into the Euclidean space R^{k-1}.

Periodic trajectories in 3-dimensional convex billiards

We give lower bound on the number of periodic billiard trajectories inside a generic smooth strictly convex closed surface in 3-space: for odd n, there are at least 2(n-1) such trajectories. We apply a topological approach based on the calculation of cohomology of certain configuration spaces.

Topology of cyclic configuration spaces and periodic trajectories of multi-dimensional billiards

We give lowed bounds on the number of periodic trajectories in strictly convex smooth billiards in $\R^{m+1}$ for $m\ge 3$. For plane billiards (when m=1) such bounds were obtained by G. Birkhoff in the 1920's. Our proof is based on topological methods of calculus of variations - equivariant Morse and Lusternik - Schirelman theories. We compute the equivariant cohomology ring of the cyclic configuration space of the sphere $S^m$, i.e., the space of n-tuples of points $(x_1, ..., x_n)$, where $x_i\in S^m$ and $x_i\ne x_{i+1}$ for i=1,2, ..., n.
