A Besicovitch-Morse function preserving the Lebesgue measure

We continue the investigation of which non-dierentiable maps can occur in the framework of ergodic theory started in [2]. We construct a Besicovitch-Morse function map which preserves the Lebesgue measure. We also show that the set of Besicovitch functions is of rst category in the set of continuous functions which preserve the Lebesgue measure.

Invariant measures for typical continuous maps on manifolds

We study the invariant measures of typical $C^0$ maps on compact connected manifolds with or without boundary, and also of typical homeomorphisms. We prove that the weak$^*$ closure of the set of ergodic measurescoincides with the weak$^*$ closure of the set of measures supported on periodic orbits and also coincides withthe set of pseudo-physical measures. Furthermore, we show that this set has empty interior in the set of invariant measures.

Pseudo-physical measures for typical continuous maps of the interval

We study the measure theoretic properties of typical C 0 maps of the interval. We prove that any ergodic measure is pseudo-physical, and conversely, any pseudo-physical measure is in the closure of the ergodic measures, as well as in the closure of the atomic measures. We show that the set of pseudo-physical measures is meager in the space of all invariant measures. Finally, we study the entropy function. We construct pseudo-physical measures with infinite entropy. We also prove that, for each m $\ge$ 1, there exists infinitely many pseudo-physical measures with entropy log m, and deduce that the entropy function is neither upper semi-continuous nor lower semi-continuous.

Infinite ergodic index of the ehrenfest wind-tree model

The set of all possible configurations of the Ehrenfest wind-tree model endowed with the Hausdorff topology is a compact metric space. For a typical configuration we show that the wind-tree dynamics has infinite ergodic index in almost every direction. In particular some ergodic theorems can be applied to show that if we start with a large number of initially parallel particles their directions decorrelate as the dynamics evolve answering the question posed by the Ehrenfests.

$λ$-stability of periodic billiard orbits

We introduce a new notion of stability for periodic orbits in polygonal billiards. We say that a periodic orbit of a polygonal billiard is $λ$-stable if there is a periodic orbit for the corresponding pinball billiard which converges to it as $λ$ $\rightarrow$ 1. This notion of stability is unrelated to the notion introduced by Galperin, Stepin and Vorobets. We give sufficient and necessary conditions for a periodic orbit to be $λ$-stable and prove that the set of d-gons having at most finite number of $λ$-stable periodic orbits is dense is the space of d-gons. Moreover, we also determine completely the $λ$-stable periodic orbits in integrable polygons.

Weak-mixing polygonal billiards

We consider the set of polygons all of whose sides are vertical or horizontal with fixed combinatorics (for example all the figure "L"s). We show that there is a dense G $δ$ subset of such polygons such that for each polygon in this G $δ$ set the billiard flow is weakly-mixing in almost every direction.

Minimality of the Ehrenfest wind-tree model

We consider aperiodic wind-tree models, and show that for a generic (in the sense of Baire) configuration the wind-tree dynamics is minimal in almost all directions, and has a dense set of periodic points.

Multiple mixing from weak hyperbolicity by the Hopf argument

We show that using only weak hyperbolicity (no smoothness, compactness or exponential rates) the Hopf argument produces multiple mixing in an elementary way. While this recovers classical results with far simpler proofs, the point is the broader applicability implied by the weak hypotheses. Some of the results can also be viewed as establishing "mixing implies multiple mixing" outside the classical hyperbolic context.

Polygonal billiards with one side scattering

We study polygonal billiards with one-sided vertical mirror scattered on a square billiard table. We associate trajectories of these kinds of billiards with double rotations and study orbit behavior and questions of complexity.

Homotopical rigidity of polygonal billiards

Consider two $k$-gons $P$ and $Q$. We say that the billiard flows in $P$ and $Q$ are homotopically equivalent if the set of conjugacy classes in the fundamental group of $P$ which contain a periodic billiard orbit agrees with the analogous set for $Q$. We study this equivalence relationship and compare it to the equivalence relations, order equivalence and code equivalence, introduced in \cite{BT1,BT2}. In particular we show if $P$ is a rational polygon, and $Q$ is homotopically equivalent to $P$, then $P$ and $Q$ are similar, or affinely similar if all sides of $P$ are vertical and horizontal.

Ergodic infinite group extensions of geodesic flows on translation surfaces

We show that generic infinite group extensions of geodesic flows on square tiled translation surfaces are ergodic in almost every direction, subject to certain natural constraints. Recently K. Frcaczek and C. Ulcigrai have shown that certain concrete staircases, covers of square-tiled surfaces, are not ergodic in almost every direction. In contrast we show the almost sure ergodicity of other concrete staircases. An appendix provides a combinatorial approach for the study of square-tiled surfaces.

Infinite-horizon Lorentz tubes and gases: recurrence and ergodic properties

We construct classes of two-dimensional aperiodic Lorentz systems that have infinite horizon and are 'chaotic', in the sense that they are (Poincaré) recurrent, uniformly hyperbolic, ergodic, and the first-return map to any scatterer is $K$-mixing. In the case of the Lorentz tubes (i.e., Lorentz gases in a strip), we define general measured families of systems (\emph{ensembles}) for which the above properties occur with probability 1. In the case of the Lorentz gases in the plane, we define families, endowed with a natural metric, within which the set of all chaotic dynamical systems is uncountable and dense.

Orbit structure of interval exchange transformations with flip

A sharp bound on the number of invariant components of an interval exchange transformation is provided. More precisely, it is proved that the number of periodic components n_per and the number of minimal components n_min of an interval exchange transformation of n intervals satisfy n_per+2 n_min\le n. Besides, it is shown that almost all interval exchange transformations are typical, that is, have all the periodic components stable and all the minimal components robust (i.e. persistent under almost all small perturbations). Finally, we find all the possible values for the integer vector (n_per, n_min) for all typical interval exchange transformation of n intervals.
