Large Order Enumerative Geometry, Black Holes and Black Rings

Exploiting newly available data on Gopakumar-Vafa invariants at high genus for one-parameter hypergeometric Calabi-Yau threefolds, we study numerically the growth of the 5D indices, stable pair (PT) invariants and rank one Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants at large charges. For the 5D index $Ω_{5D}(d,m)$, below a critical value of the angular momentum $m$, we find perfect agreement with the Bekenstein-Hawking-Wald entropy of rotating 5D BMPV black holes, including the subleading correction from four-derivative interactions. When $m$ exceeds the critical value, the 5D index is instead dominated by black rings with the smallest possible dipole charge. The stable pair invariant $PT(d,m)$, which is determined by 5D indices, has a similar black ring/hole transition at negative $m$ (now interpreted as the D0-brane charge) but surprisingly exhibits two other phase transitions at positive $m$: first, to a plateau and then to a polynomial growth $\sim m^{2d-1}$. In each phase, we derive an approximate expression for the invariant. Finally, the rank one DT invariant $DT(d,m)$ is similar to $PT(d,m)$ at negative $m$, and then transitions to a phase dominated by D0-branes, with entropy of order $m^{2/3}$. Along the way, we determine the fixed genus, large degree behavior of GV invariants (including the overall $g$-dependent constant), extend it to an approximate formula valid also for large $g$, point out the unreasonable effectiveness of a simple PT/MSW relation, and study the growth of topological free energies at fixed degree, confirming a conjecture of Mariño.

Mock modularity at work, or black holes in a forest

Mock modular forms, first invented by Ramanujan, provide a beautiful generalization of the usual modular forms. In recent years, it was found that they capture generating functions of the number of microstates of BPS black holes appearing in compactifications of string theory with 8 and 16 supercharges. This review describes these results and their applications which range from the actual computation of these generating functions for both compact and non-compact compactification manifolds (encoding, respectively, Donaldson-Thomas and Vafa-Witten topological invariants) to the construction of new non-commutative structures on moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau threefolds.

Remarks on Vafa-Witten theory, or how to sit on a wall

We prove three results about refined $SU(N)$ VW invariants on Hirzebruch surfaces. First, we crucially simplify the modular anomaly equation satisfied by the generating series of these invariants by expressing it in terms of complementary generalized error functions, which requires extending these error functions to their singular loci. Second, we evaluate the variation of the modular completions of the generating series upon change of polarization. Finally, a representation of the generating functions in terms of indefinite theta series allows us to compute VW invariants at the walls of marginal stability, and to express them in terms of the invariants on the two sides of the wall and those of lower ranks. All the results exhibit a universal structure suggesting their wider applicability.

Multi-instantons in 2d string theory

Instanton contributions in 2d string theory are known to include subtle numerical factors $ζ_n$ closely related to a contour prescription in multi-instanton string amplitudes. Both ingredients appear to be ambiguous due to a degeneracy between $(1,n)$-ZZ instantons and $n$ (1,1)-ZZ instantons in the linear dilaton background. We resolve this ambiguity using insights from the dual matrix quantum mechanics where the multipliers $ζ_n$ can be derived from an integral representation of the scattering phase and follow from the median resummation prescribed by resurgence theory. We evaluate multi-instanton string amplitudes in the theory compactified on a circle of finite radius for arbitrary number of instantons and show that they reproduce the matrix model predictions provided the Lorentzian contour prescription is used for their evaluation. We also show that the non-perturbative free energy matches the structure of the D-instanton induced string field theory effective action, which suggests the vanishing of contributions from worldsheet topologies of negative Euler number.

Quantum TBA for refined BPS indices

Refined BPS indices give rise to a quantum Riemann-Hilbert problem that is inherently related to a non-commutative deformation of moduli spaces arising in gauge and string theory compactifications. We reformulate this problem in terms of a non-commutative deformation of a TBA-like equation and obtain its formal solution as an expansion in refined indices. As an application of this construction, we derive a generating function of solutions of the TBA equation in the unrefined case.

Mock modularity of Calabi-Yau threefolds

Generating functions $h_r(τ)$ of D4-D2-D0 BPS indices, appearing in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIA string theory and identical to rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas invariants, are known to be higher depth mock modular forms satisfying a specific modular anomaly equation, with depth determined by the D4-brane charge $r$. We develop a method to solve the anomaly equation for arbitrary charges, in terms of indefinite theta series. This allows us to find the generating functions up to modular forms that can be fixed by computing just a finite number of Fourier coefficients of $h_r$.

Modular anomaly of BPS black holes

Generating functions of BPS indices, counting states of D4-D2-D0 black holes in Calabi-Yau compactifications of type IIA string theory and identified with rank 0 Donaldson- Thomas invariants, are examples of mock modular forms. They have a quite complicated modular anomaly expressed as a sum over three different types of trees weighted by generalized error functions and their derivatives. We show that this anomaly can be significantly simplified, which in turn simplfies finding the corresponding mock modular generating functions.

Modular bootstrap for D4-D2-D0 indices on compact Calabi-Yau threefolds

We investigate the modularity constraints on the generating series $h_r(τ)$ of BPS indices counting D4-D2-D0 bound states with fixed D4-brane charge $r$ in type IIA string theory compactified on complete intersection Calabi-Yau threefolds with $b_2 = 1$. For unit D4-brane, $h_1$ transforms as a (vector-valued) modular form under the action of $SL(2,Z)$ and thus is completely determined by its polar terms. We propose an Ansatz for these terms in terms of rank 1 Donaldson-Thomas invariants, which incorporates contributions from a single D6-anti-D6 pair. Using an explicit overcomplete basis of the relevant space of weakly holomorphic modular forms (valid for any $r$), we find that for 10 of the 13 allowed threefolds, the Ansatz leads to a solution for $h_1$ with integer Fourier coefficients, thereby predicting an infinite series of DT invariants. For $r > 1$, $h_r$ is mock modular and determined by its polar part together with its shadow. Restricting to $r = 2$, we use the generating series of Hurwitz class numbers to construct a series $h^{an}_2$ with exactly the same modular anomaly as $h_2$, so that the difference $h_{2}-h^{an}_2$ is an ordinary modular form fixed by its polar terms. For lack of a satisfactory Ansatz, we leave the determination of these polar terms as an open problem.

Quantum geometry, stability and modularity

By exploiting new mathematical relations between Pandharipande-Thomas (PT) invariants, closely related to Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants, and rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants counting D4-D2-D0 BPS bound states, we rigorously compute the first few terms in the generating series of Abelian D4-D2-D0 indices for compact one-parameter Calabi-Yau threefolds of hypergeometric type. In all cases where GV invariants can be computed to sufficiently high genus, we find striking confirmation that the generating series is modular, and predict infinite series of Abelian D4-D2-D0 indices. Conversely, we use these results to provide new constraints for the direct integration method, which allows to compute GV invariants (and therefore the topological string partition function) to higher genus than hitherto possible. The triangle of relations between GV/PT/DT invariants is powered by a new explicit formula relating PT and rank 0 DT invariants, which is proven in an Appendix by the second named author. As a corollary, we obtain rigorous Castelnuovo-type bounds for PT and GV invariants for CY threefolds with Picard rank one.

Quantum geometry and mock modularity

In previous work, we used new mathematical relations between Gopakumar-Vafa (GV) invariants and rank 0 Donaldson-Thomas (DT) invariants to determine the first few terms in the generating series of Abelian D4-D2-D0 indices for a class of compact one-parameter Calabi-Yau threefolds. This allowed us to obtain striking checks of S-duality, namely the prediction that these series should be vector-valued weakly holomorphic modular forms under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$. In this work, we extend this analysis to the case of D4-D2-D0 indices with two units of D4-brane charge, where S-duality instead predicts that the corresponding generating series should be mock modular with a specific shadow. For the degree 10 hypersurface in weighted projective space $\mathbb{P}_{5,2,1,1,1}$, and the degree 8 hypersurface in $\\mathbb{P}_{4,1,1,1,1}$, where GV invariants can be computed to sufficiently high genus, we find that the first few terms indeed match a unique mock modular form with the required properties, which we determine explicitly. Turning the argument around, we obtain new boundary conditions on the holomorphic ambiguity of the topological string amplitude, which in principle allow to determine it completely up to genus 95 and 112, respectively, i.e. almost twice the maximal genus obtainable using gap and ordinary Castelnuovo vanishing conditions.

Instantons in sine-Liouville theory

We compute instanton corrections to the partition function of sine-Liouville (SL) theory, which provides a worldsheet description of two-dimensional string theory in a non-trivial tachyon background. We derive these corrections using a matrix model formulation based on a chiral representation of matrix quantum mechanics and using string theory methods. In both cases we restrict to the leading and subleading orders in the string coupling expansion. Then the CFT technique is used to compute two orders of the expansion in the SL perturbation parameter $λ$, while the matrix model gives results which are non-perturbative in $λ$. The matrix model results perfectly match those of string theory in the small $λ$ expansion. We also generalize our findings to the case of perturbation by several tachyon vertex operators carrying different momenta, and obtain interesting analytic predictions for the disk two-point and annulus one-point functions with ZZ boundary condition.

Hypermultiplet metric and NS5-instantons

The metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space of Calabi-Yau compactifications of type II string theory is known to receive D-brane and NS5-brane instanton corrections. We compute explicit expressions for these corrections in the one-instanton approximation, but to all orders in the string coupling expansion around the instantons. As a consistency check, we prove that in the case of one (universal) hypermultiplet, the resulting metric fits the Przanowski description of self-dual Einstein spaces. We also show that in the small string coupling limit the metric acquires a certain square structure, consistently with expectations from the string amplitudes analysis. This result provides explicit predictions for yet mysterious string amplitudes in the presence of NS5-branes.

D-instanton Induced Superpotential

We use string field theory to fix the normalization of the D-instanton corrections to the superpotential involving the moduli fields of type II string theory compactified on an orientifold of a Calabi-Yau threefold in the absence of fluxes. We focus on $O(1)$ instantons whose only zero modes are the four bosonic modes associated with translation of the instanton in non-compact directions and a pair of fermionic zero modes associated with the two supercharges broken by the instanton. We work with a generic superconformal field theory and express our answer in terms of the spectrum of open strings on the instanton. We analyse the contribution of multi-instantons of this kind to the superpotential and argue that it vanishes when background fluxes are absent.

Conformal TBA for resolved conifolds

We revisit the Riemann-Hilbert problem determined by Donaldson-Thomas invariants for the resolved conifold and for other small crepant resolutions. While this problem can be recast as a system of TBA-type equations in the conformal limit, solutions are ill-defined due to divergences in the sum over infinite trajectories in the spectrum of D2-D0-brane bound states. We explore various prescriptions to make the sum well-defined, show that one of them reproduces the existing solution in the literature, and identify an alternative solution which is better behaved in a certain limit. Furthermore, we show that a suitable asymptotic expansion of the $τ$ function reproduces the genus expansion of the topological string partition function for any small crepant resolution. As a by-product, we conjecture new integral representations for the triple sine function, similar to Woronowicz' integral representation for Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm.

Euclidean D-branes in Type IIB string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds

We compute the contribution of Euclidean D-branes in type IIB string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds to the metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space in the large volume, weak coupling limit. Our results are in perfect agreement with the predictions based on S-duality, mirror symmetry and supersymmetry.

Heavenly metrics, BPS indices and twistors

Recently T. Bridgeland defined a complex hyperkähler metric on the tangent bundle over the space of stability conditions of a triangulated category, based on a Riemann-Hilbert problem determined by the Donaldson-Thomas invariants. This metric is encoded in a function $W(z,θ)$ satisfying a heavenly equation, or a potential $F(z,θ)$ satisfying an isomonodromy equation. After recasting the RH problem into a system of TBA-type equations, we obtain integral expressions for both $W$ and $F$ in terms of solutions of that system. These expressions are recognized as conformal limits of the `instanton generating potential' and `contact potential' appearing in studies of D-instantons and BPS black holes. By solving the TBA equations iteratively, we reproduce Joyce's original construction of $F$ as a formal series in the rational DT invariants. Furthermore, we produce similar solutions to deformed versions of the heavenly and isomonodromy equations involving a non-commutative star-product. In the case of a finite uncoupled BPS structure, we rederive the results previously obtained by Bridgeland and obtain the so-called $τ$ function for arbitrary values of the fiber coordinates $θ$, in terms of a suitable two-variable generalization of Barnes' $G$ function.

D-instantons in Type IIA string theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds

Type IIA string theory compactified on a Calabi-Yau threefold has a hypermultiplet moduli space whose metric is known to receive non-perturbative corrections from Euclidean D2-branes wrapped on 3-cycles. These corrections have been computed earlier by making use of mirror symmetry, S-duality and twistorial description of quaternionic geometries. In this paper we compute the leading corrections in each homology class using a direct world-sheet approach without relying on any duality symmetry or supersymmetry. Our results are in perfect agreement with the earlier predictions.

Canonical structure of minimal varying $Λ$ theories

Minimal varying $Λ$ theories are defined by an action built from the Einstein-Cartan-Holst first order action for gravity with the cosmological constant $Λ$ as an independent scalar field, and supplemented by the Euler and Pontryagin densities multiplied by $1/Λ$. We identify the canonical structure of these theories which turn out to represent an example of irregular systems. We find five degrees of freedom on generic backgrounds and for generic values of parameters, whereas if the parameters satisfy a certain condition (which includes the most commonly considered Euler case) only three degrees of freedom remain. On de Sitter-like backgrounds the canonical structure changes, and due to an emergent conformal symmetry one degree of freedom drops from the spectrum. We also analyze the self-dual case with an holomorphic action depending only on the self-dual part of the connection. In this case we find two (complex) degrees of freedom, and further discuss the Kodama state, the restriction to de Sitter background and the effect of reality conditions.
