Critical Overview of Loops and Foams

This is a review of the present status of loop and spin foam approaches to quantization of four-dimensional general relativity. It aims at raising various issues which seem to challenge some of the methods and the results often taken as granted in these domains. A particular emphasis is given to the issue of diffeomorphism and local Lorentz symmetries at the quantum level and to the discussion of new spin foam models. We also describe modifications of these two approaches which may overcome their problems and speculate on other promising research directions.

The new vertices and canonical quantization

We present two results on the recently proposed new spin foam models. First, we show how a (slightly modified) restriction on representations in the EPRL model leads to the appearance of the Ashtekar-Barbero connection, thus bringing this model even closer to LQG. Second, we however argue that the quantization procedure used to derive the new models is inconsistent since it relies on the symplectic structure of the unconstraint BF theory.

TBA for non-perturbative moduli spaces

Recently, an exact description of instanton corrections to the moduli spaces of 4d N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on a circle and Calabi-Yau compactifications of Type II superstring theories was found. The equations determining the instanton contributions turn out to have the form of Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz. We explore further this relation and, in particular, we identify the contact potential of quaternionic string moduli space with the free energy of the integrable system and the Kahler potential of the gauge theory moduli space with the Yang-Yang functional. We also show that the corresponding S-matrix satisfies all usual constraints of 2d integrable models, including crossing and bootstrap, and derive the associated Y-system. Surprisingly, in the simplest case the Y-system is described by the MacMahon function relevant for crystal melting and topological strings.

Quantum mirror symmetry and twistors

Using the twistor approach to hypermultiplet moduli spaces, we derive the worldsheet, D(-1), and D1-instanton contributions to the generalized mirror map, relating Type IIA and Type IIB string theory compactified on generic mirror Calabi-Yau threefolds. For this purpose, we provide a novel description of the twistor space underlying the Type IIB hypermultiplet moduli space where the SL(2,Z)-action is found to be free from quantum corrections. The extent to which instanton effects may resolve the perturbative singularities of the moduli space metric is discussed.

Linear perturbations of Hyperkahler metrics

We study general linear perturbations of a class of 4d real-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds obtainable by the (generalized) Legendre transform method. Using twistor methods, we show that deformations can be encoded in a set of holomorphic functions of 2d+1 variables, as opposed to the functions of d+1 variables controlling the unperturbed metric. Such deformations generically break all tri-holomorphic isometries of the unperturbed metric. Geometrically, these functions generate the symplectomorphisms which relate local complex Darboux coordinate systems in different patches of the twistor space. The deformed Kahler potential follows from these data by a Penrose-type transform. As an illustration of our general framework, we determine the leading exponential deviation of the Atiyah-Hitchin manifold away from its negative mass Taub-NUT limit. In a companion paper arXiv:0810.1675, we extend these techniques to quaternionic-Kahler spaces with isometries.

Linear perturbations of quaternionic metrics

We extend the twistor methods developed in our earlier work on linear deformations of hyperkahler manifolds [arXiv:0806.4620] to the case of quaternionic-Kahler manifolds. Via Swann's construction, deformations of a 4d-dimensional quaternionic-Kahler manifold $M$ are in one-to-one correspondence with deformations of its $4d+4$-dimensional hyperkahler cone $S$. The latter can be encoded in variations of the complex symplectomorphisms which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_S$, with a suitable homogeneity condition that ensures that the hyperkahler cone property is preserved. Equivalently, we show that the deformations of $M$ can be encoded in variations of the complex contact transformations which relate different locally flat patches of the twistor space $Z_M$ of $M$, by-passing the Swann bundle and its twistor space. We specialize these general results to the case of quaternionic-Kahler metrics with $d+1$ commuting isometries, obtainable by the Legendre transform method, and linear deformations thereof. We illustrate our methods for the hypermultiplet moduli space in string theory compactifications at tree- and one-loop level.

D-instantons and twistors

Finding the exact, quantum corrected metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space in Type II string compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds is an outstanding open problem. We address this issue by relating the quaternionic-Kahler metric on the hypermultiplet moduli space to the complex contact geometry on its twistor space. In this framework, Euclidean D-brane instantons are captured by contact transformations between different patches. We derive those by recasting the previously known A-type D2-instanton corrections in the language of contact geometry, covariantizing the result under electro-magnetic duality, and using mirror symmetry. As a result, we are able to express the effects of all D-instantons in Type II compactifications concisely as a sum of dilogarithm functions. We conclude with some comments on the relation to microscopic degeneracies of four-dimensional BPS black holes and to the wall-crossing formula of Kontsevich and Soibelman, and on the form of the yet unknown NS5-brane instanton contributions.

SO(4,C)-covariant Ashtekar-Barbero gravity and the Immirzi parameter

An so(4,C)-covariant hamiltonian formulation of a family of generalized Hilbert-Palatini actions depending on a parameter (the so called Immirzi parameter) is developed. It encompasses the Ashtekar-Barbero gravity which serves as a basis of quantum loop gravity. Dirac quantization of this system is constructed. Next we study dependence of the quantum system on the Immirzi parameter. The path integral quantization shows no dependence on it. A way to modify the loop approach in the accordance with the formalism developed here is briefly outlined.

Hamiltonian Analysis of non-chiral Plebanski Theory and its Generalizations

We consider non-chiral, full Lorentz group-based Plebanski formulation of general relativity in its version that utilizes the Lagrange multiplier field Phi with "internal" indices. The Hamiltonian analysis of this version of the theory turns out to be simpler than in the previously considered in the literature version with Phi carrying spacetime indices. We then extend the Hamiltonian analysis to a more general class of theories whose action contains scalars invariants constructed from Phi. Such theories have recently been considered in the context of unification of gravity with other forces. We show that these more general theories have six additional propagating degrees of freedom as compared to general relativity, something that has not been appreciated in the literature treating them as being not much different from GR.

Simplicity and closure constraints in spin foam models of gravity

We revise imposition of various constraints in spin foam models of 4-dimensional general relativity. We argue that the usual simplicity constraint must be supplemented by a constraint on holonomies and together they must be inserted explicitly into the discretized path integral. At the same time, the closure constraint must be relaxed so that the new constraint expresses covariance of intertwiners assigned to tetrahedra by spin foam quantization. As a result, the spin foam boundary states are shown to be realized in terms of projected spin networks of the covariant loop approach to quantum gravity.

Immirzi parameter and fermions with non-minimal coupling

We clarify the role played by the Immirzi parameter in classical gravity coupled to fermions. Considering the general non-minimal coupling, we show that, although the torsion depends explicitly on the Immirzi parameter, in a suitable parametrization the effective action obtained by integrating out the spin-connection is independent of it. Thus the Immirzi parameter is not detectable in classical theory even after coupling of fermions.

Quantum covariant c-map

We generalize the covariant c-map found in hep-th/0701214 including perturbative quantum corrections. We also perform explicitly the superconformal quotient from the hyperkahler cone obtained by the quantum c-map to the quaternion-Kahler space, which is the moduli space of hypermultiplets. As a result, the perturbatively corrected metric on the moduli space is found in a simplified form comparing to the expression known in the literature.

Spin foam model from canonical quantization

We suggest a modification of the Barrett-Crane spin foam model of 4-dimensional Lorentzian general relativity motivated by the canonical quantization. The starting point is Lorentz covariant loop quantum gravity. Its kinematical Hilbert space is found as a space of the so-called projected spin networks. These spin networks are identified with the boundary states of a spin foam model and provide a generalization of the unique Barrette-Crane intertwiner. We propose a way to modify the Barrett-Crane quantization procedure to arrive at this generalization: the B field (bi-vectors) should be promoted not to generators of the gauge algebra, but to their certain projection. The modification is also justified by the canonical analysis of Plebanski formulation. Finally, we compare our construction with other proposals to modify the Barret-Crane model.

Plebanski Theory and Covariant Canonical Formulation

We establish an equivalence between the Hamiltonian formulation of the Plebanski action for general relativity and the covariant canonical formulation of the Hilbert-Palatini action. This is done by comparing the symplectic structures of the two theories through the computation of Dirac brackets. We also construct a shifted connection with simplified Dirac brackets, playing an important role in the covariant loop quantization program, in the Plebanski framework. Implications for spin foam models are also discussed.

Membrane and fivebrane instantons from quaternionic geometry

We determine the one-instanton corrections to the universal hypermultiplet moduli space coming both from Euclidean membranes and NS-fivebranes wrapping the cycles of a (rigid) Calabi-Yau threefold. These corrections are completely encoded by a single function characterizing a generic four-dimensional quaternion-Kahler metric without isometries. We give explicit solutions for this function describing all one-instanton corrections, including the fluctuations around the instanton to all orders in the string coupling constant. In the semi-classical limit these results are in perfect agreement with previous supergravity calculations.

Reality conditions for Ashtekar gravity from Lorentz-covariant formulation

We show the equivalence of the Lorentz-covariant canonical formulation considered for the Immirzi parameter $β=i$ to the selfdual Ashtekar gravity. We also propose to deal with the reality conditions in terms of Dirac brackets derived from the covariant formulation and defined on an extended phase space which involves, besides the selfdual variables, also their anti-selfdual counterparts.

On choice of connection in loop quantum gravity

We investigate the quantum area operator in the loop approach based on the Lorentz covariant hamiltonian formulation of general relativity. We show that there exists a two-parameter family of Lorentz connections giving rise to Wilson lines which are eigenstates of the area operator. For each connection the area spectrum is evaluated. In particular, the results of the su(2) approach turn out to be included in the formalism. However, only one connection from the family is a spacetime connection ensuring that the 4d diffeomorphism invariance is preserved under quantization. It leads to the area spectrum independent of the Immirzi parameter. As a consequence, we conclude that the su(2) approach must be modified accordingly to the results obtained since it breaks one of the classical symmetries.

SU(2) Loop Quantum Gravity seen from Covariant Theory

Covariant loop gravity comes out of the canonical analysis of the Palatini action and the use of the Dirac brackets arising from dealing with the second class constraints (``simplicity'' constraints). Within this framework, we underline a quantization ambiguity due to the existence of a family of possible Lorentz connections. We show the existence of a Lorentz connection generalizing the Ashtekar-Barbero connection and we loop-quantize the theory showing that it leads to the usual SU(2) Loop Quantum Gravity and to the area spectrum given by the SU(2) Casimir. This covariant point of view allows to analyze closely the drawbacks of the SU(2) formalism: the quantization based on the (generalized) Ashtekar-Barbero connection breaks time diffeomorphisms and physical outputs depend non-trivially on the embedding of the canonical hypersurface into the space-time manifold. On the other hand, there exists a true space-time connection, transforming properly under all diffeomorphisms. We argue that it is this connection that should be used in the definition of loop variables. However, we are still not able to complete the quantization program for this connection giving a full solution of the second class constraints at the Hilbert space level. Nevertheless, we show how a canonical quantization of the Dirac brackets at a finite number of points leads to the kinematical setting of the Barrett-Crane model, with simple spin networks and an area spectrum given by the SL(2,C) Casimir.
