Improving Mimetic Gravity with Non-trivial Scalar Potential: Cosmology, Black Holes, Shadow and Photon Sphere

It is not easy to treat the spacetime with horizon(s) in the standard mimetic gravity. The solution to this problem has been presented in Phys.~Lett.~B 830 (2022), 137140, where it was suggested to modify the Lagrange multiplier constraint. In this paper, by using the improved formulation, we investigate the cosmology and black holes in mimetic gravity with scalar potential and in the scalar mimetic $F(R)$ gravity. The inflationary era and dark energy epoch for the above theories are presented as specific examples from the general reconstruction scheme which permits to realise any universe expansion history via the choice of the corresponding scalar potential or function $F(R)$. Two black hole solutions including the Schwarzschild and Hayward ones are constructed. The shadow and the radius of the photon sphere for the above black holes are found. The explicit confrontation of the black hole shadow radius with the observational bounds from M87$^*$ and Sgr A$^*$ objects is done. It is demonstrated that they do not conflict with Event Horizon Telescope observations.

Future singularity in an anisotropic universe

We investigate future singularities originating from the anisotropy in the Universe. We formulate a new class of singularities in the homogeneous and anisotropic universe, comparing them with the known singularities in the homogeneous and isotropic universe. We also discuss the physical consequences of the new singularities. Moreover, we develop a novel reconstruction method for the anisotropic universe by introducing four scalar fields to reconstruct cosmological models in which future singularities appear. We present an explicit example where the anisotropy may grow in the future up to singularity.

Different aspects of entropic cosmology

We give a short review of the recent developments of entropic cosmology based on two thermodynamic laws of the apparent horizon, namely the first and the second laws of thermodynamics. The first law essentially provides the change of the entropy of the apparent horizon during the cosmic evolution of the universe, in particular, it is given by: $TdS = -d(ρV) + W dV$ (where $W$ is the work density and other quantities have their usual meaning). In this way, the first law actually links various theories of gravity with the entropy of the apparent horizon. This leads to a natural question -- ``what will be the form of the horizon entropy corresponding to a general modified theory of gravity?'' The second law of horizon thermodynamics states that the change of total entropy (the sum of horizon entropy $+$ matter fields' entropy) with respect to cosmic time must be positive, where the matter fields behave like an open system characterised by a non-zero chemical potential. The second law of horizon thermodynamics importantly provides model-independent constraints on entropic parameters. Finally, we discuss the standpoint of entropic cosmology on inflation (or bounce), reheating and primordial gravitational waves from the perspective of generalised entropy function.

Can we learn from matter creation to solve the $H_{0}$ tension problem?

The $H_{0}$ tension problem is studied in the light of a matter creation mechanism (an effective approach to replacing dark energy), the way to define the matter creation rate being of pure phenomenological nature. Bayesian (probabilistic) Machine Learning is used to learn the constraints on the free parameters of the models, with the learning being based on the generated expansion rate, $H(z)$. Taking advantage of the method, the constraints for three redshift ranges are learned. Namely, for the two redshift ranges: $z\in [0,2]$~(cosmic chronometers) and $z\in [0,2.5]$~(cosmic chronometers + BAO), covering already available $H(z)$ data, to validate the learned results; and for a third redshift interval, $z\in[0,5]$, for forecasting purposes. It is learned that the $3αH_{0}$ term in the creation rate provides options that have the potential to solve the $H_{0}$ tension problem.

Extremely small stars in scalar-tensor gravity: when stellar radius is less than Schwarzschild one

We show analytically that there exist compact stellar objects akin to neutron stars whose radius is smaller than the Schwarzschild radius defined by Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) mass. The radius of the compact object is defined by the radius where the energy density and the pressure of ordinary matter vanish, while clouds of scalar(s) can extend beyond this radius -- a situation that is often encountered in modified gravity theories, like $F(R)$ gravity and the scalar--Einstein--Gauss-Bonnet gravity. The clouds of scalar mode(s) give additional contributions to the ADM mass and as a result, the corresponding Schwarzschild radius given by the ADM mass can be larger than that of the compact object.

Primordial gravitational waves in horizon cosmology and constraints on entropic parameters

The hallmark of the 4-parameter generalized entropy is that it can represent various known entropies proposed so far for suitable limits of the parameters, and thus the 4-parameter generalized entropy can be applied on additive as well as on non-additive systems. Thereafter the proposal of the generalized entropy, it becomes important to constrain the corresponding parameters. In the present work, we intend to do this from the perspective of primordial gravitational waves (GWs) generated during inflation. In the background level, the generalized entropy successfully drives a viable and smooth evolution of the universe, particularly from inflation to reheating followed by a radiation era, for certain ranges of the entropic parameters. Consequently we investigate whether such viable ranges of the entropic parameters (coming from the background level) allow the primordial GWs spectrum to pass through the sensitivity curves of various GWs observatories. Therefore, if the future observatories can detect the signal of primordial GWs, then our theoretical expectation carried in the present work may provide a possible tool for the measurement of the generalized entropic parameters.

Exponential gravity with logarithmic corrections in the presence of axion dark matter

An exponential modified gravity with additional logarithmic corrections is considered with the presence of an axion-like scalar field in the role of dark matter. Axion fields are thought to become important at late-times when the axion-like scalar field oscillates around its vacuum expectation value, mimicking dark matter behaviour. The model is compared with the usual pressureless fluid description of dark matter. Both models are tested with observational data including some of the latest sources, providing similar fits in comparison with the $Λ$CDM model. Despite results are not statistically relevant to rule out any model, the number of free parameters still favours $Λ$CDM model, as shown by computing the goodness of the fits.

Second law of horizon thermodynamics during cosmic evolution

We examine the second law of thermodynamics in the context of horizon cosmology, in particular, whether the change of total entropy (i.e. the sum of the entropy for the apparent horizon and the entropy for the matter fields) proves to be positive with the cosmic expansion of the universe. The matter fields inside the horizon obey the thermodynamics of an open system as the matter fields has a flux through the apparent horizon, which is either outward or inward depending on the background cosmological dynamics. Regarding the entropy of the apparent horizon, we consider different forms of the horizon entropy like the Tsallis entropy, the Rényi entropy, the Kaniadakis entropy, or even the 4-parameter generalized entropy; and determine the appropriate conditions on the respective entropic parameters coming from the second law of horizon thermodynamics. The constraints on the entropic parameters are found in such a way that it validates the second law of thermodynamics during a wide range of cosmic era of the universe, particularly from inflation to radiation dominated epoch followed by a reheating stage. Importantly, the present work provides a model independent way to constrain the entropic parameters directly from the second law of thermodynamics for the apparent horizon.

Cosmology of unimodular Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity

We propose a novel modified gravity: unimodular generalization of the Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity within the framework of cosmology. After formulating the action corresponding to the generalized Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity, we present a reconstruction scheme of this unimodular extension to achieve various cosmological eras of the universe. Interestingly, the unimodular generalization of Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity proves to be suitable for inflation (de-Sitter and quasi de-Sitter) along with power law cosmology which actually includes from reheating to the Standard Big-Bang cosmology. Apart from the inflation, such generalized Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ theory is also capable to trigger non-singular bouncing cosmology for suitable forms of the unimodular Lagrange multiplier, which are exotic for the standard Einstein-Hilbert gravity and cannot be realized in that case. The possible consequences are discussed.

Horizon entropy consistent with FLRW equations for general modified theories of gravity and for all EoS of the matter field

The question that continues to hinge the interrelation between cosmology and thermodynamics is broadly described as -- what is the form of horizon entropy that links the Friedmann equations for a "$general$" gravity theory with the underlying thermodynamics of the apparent horizon? The answer to this question was known only for Einstein's gravity and for $(n+1)$ dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity theory, but not for a general modified theory of gravity (for instance, the $F(R)$ gravity). In the present work, we take this issue and determine a general form of entropy that connects the Friedmann equations for any gravity theory with the apparent horizon thermodynamics given by $TdS = -dE + WdV$ (the symbols have their usual meaning in the context of entropic cosmology and $W = \left(ρ- p\right)/2$ is the work density of the matter fields represented by $ρ$ and $p$ as the energy density and the pressure, respectively). Using such generalized entropy, we find the respective entropies for several modified theories of gravity (including the $F(R)$ gravity). Further, it turns out that besides the above-mentioned question, the thermodynamic law $TdS = -dE + WdV$ itself has some serious difficulties for certain values of $ω$ (the EoS of matter field). Thus we propose a modified thermodynamic law of apparent horizon, given by $TdS = -dE + ρdV$, that is interestingly free from such difficulties. The modified law proves to be valid for all EoS of the matter field and thus is considered to be more general compared to the previous one which, however, is a limiting case of the modified law for $p = -ρ$. Based on such modified thermodynamics, we further determine a generalized entropy that can provide the Friedmann equations of any general gravity theory for all values of EoS of the matter field. The further implications are discussed.

Entropic Inflation in Presence of Scalar Field

In spirit of the recently proposed four-parameter generalized entropy of apparent horizon, we investigate inflationary cosmology where the matter field inside of the horizon is dominated by a scalar field with a power law potential (i.e., the form of $ϕ^n$ where $ϕ$ is the scalar field under consideration). Actually without any matter inside of the horizon, the entropic cosmology leads to a de-Sitter spacetime, or equivalently, an eternal inflation with no exit. Thus in order to achieve a viable inflation, we consider a minimally coupled scalar field inside the horizon, and moreover, with the simplest quadratic potential. It is well known that the $ϕ^2$ potential in standard scalar field cosmology is ruled out from inflationary perspective as it is not consistent with the recent Planck 2018 data; (here it may be mentioned that in the realm of ``apparent horizon thermodynamics'', the standard scalar field cosmology is analogous to the case where the entropy of the apparent horizon is given by the Bekenstein--Hawking entropy). However, the story becomes different if the horizon entropy is of generalized entropic form, in which case, the effective energy density coming from the horizon entropy plays a significant role during the evolution of the universe. In particular, it turns out that in the context of generalized entropic cosmology, the $ϕ^2$ potential indeed leads to a viable inflation (according to the Planck data) with a graceful exit, and thus the potential can be made back in the scene.

Microscopic interpretation of generalized entropy

Generalized entropy, that has been recently proposed, puts all the known and apparently different entropies like The Tsallis, the Rényi, the Barrow, the Kaniadakis, the Sharma-Mittal and the loop quantum gravity entropy within a single umbrella. However, the microscopic origin of such generalized entropy as well as its relation to thermodynamic system(s) is not clear. In the present work, we will provide a microscopic thermodynamic explanation of generalized entropy(ies) from canonical and grand-canonical ensembles. It turns out that in both the canonical and grand-canonical descriptions, the generalized entropies can be interpreted as the statistical ensemble average of a series of microscopic quantity(ies) given by various powers of $\left(-k\lnρ\right)^n$ (with $n$ being a positive integer and $ρ$ symbolizes the phase space density of the respective ensemble), along with a term representing the fluctuation of Hamiltonian and number of particles of the system under consideration (in case of canonical ensemble, the fluctuation on the particle number vanishes).

Exponential F(R) gravity with axion dark matter

The cosmological evolution within the framework of exponential $F(R)$ gravity is analysed by assuming two forms for dark matter: (a) a standard dust-like fluid and (b) an axion scalar field. As shown in previous literature, an axion-like field oscillates during the cosmological evolution but can play the role of dark matter when approaching the minimum of its potential. Both scenarios are confronted with recent observational data including the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae, Hubble parameter estimations (Cosmic Chronometers), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmic Microwave Background distances. The models show great possibilities in describing these observations when compared with the $Λ$CDM model, supporting the viability of exponential $F(R)$ gravity. The differences between both descriptions of dark matter is analysed.

Micro-canonical and canonical description for generalised entropy

Few parameters dependent generalised entropy includes Tsallis entropy, R{é}nyi entropy, Sharma-Mittal entropy, Barrow entropy, Kaniadakis entropy, etc as particular representatives. Its relation to physical systems is not always clear. In this paper, we propose the microscopic thermodynamic description for an arbitrary generalised entropy in terms of the particle system. It is shown that the change in the volume of the phase space of the particle system in the micro-canonical description or the difference in the integration measure in the phase space in the canonical description may lead to generalised entropy. Our consideration may help us understand the structure of quantum gravity.

Holographic realization from inflation to reheating in generalized entropic cosmology

The growing cosmological interest of different entropy functions (like the Tsallis entropy, the Rényi entropy, the Barrow entropy, the Sharma-Mittal entropy, the Kaniadakis entropy and the Loop Quantum gravity entropy) naturally raises an important question: "Does there exist a generalized entropy that can bring all the known entropies proposed so far within a single umbrella?" In spirit of this, recently a four parameter generalized entropy has been formulated that reduces to different known entropies for suitable limits of the parameters. Based on such four parameter generalized entropy (symbolized by $S_\mathrm{g}$), in the present paper, we examine the universe's evolution during its early phase, particularly from inflation to reheating, in the context of entropic cosmology where the entropic energy density acts as the inflaton. It turns out that the entropic energy successfully drives an early inflationary phase with a graceful exit, and moreover, the theoretical expectations of the observable indices get consistent with the recent Planck data for suitable ranges of the entropic parameters. After the inflation ends, the universe enters to a reheating stage when the entropic energy decays to relativistic particles with a certain decay rate. Actually the presence of the entropic parameters in the $S_\mathrm{g}$ ensures a continuous evolution of the Hubble parameter from a quasi de-Sitter phase during the inflation to a power law phase during the reheating stage dominated by a constant EoS parameter. Consequently we investigate the reheating phenomenology, and scan the entropic parameters from both the inflation and reheating requirements. We further address the possibility of instantaneous reheating in the present context of generalized entropy.

From inflation to reheating and their dynamical stability analysis in Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We investigate the inflation and reheating phenomenology in scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity where a scalar field non-minimally couples with the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) curvature term. Regarding the inflationary phenomenology, we find -- (1) the inflation starts with a quasi de-Sitter phase and has an exit at a finite e-fold, (2) the scalar and tensor perturbations prove to be ghost free and do not suffer from gradient instability, (3) the curvature perturbation amplitude as well as its tilt and the tensor-to-scalar ratio turn out to be simultaneously compatible with the recent Planck data for suitable values of the parameters. After the inflation ends, the scalar field starts to decay to radiation with a constant decay width. For our considered scalar potential and the GB coupling function, the model results to an analytic power law solution of the Hubble parameter and a logarithmic solution of the scalar field during the reheating era, where the exponent of the Hubble parameter determines the effective EoS parameter ($w_\mathrm{eff}$) during the same. The stability of such reheating dynamics is examined by dynamical analysis which ensures that $w_\mathrm{eff}$ can go beyond unity and reach up-to the maximum value of $\mathrm{max}(w_\mathrm{eff}) = 1.56$. The scenario with $w_\mathrm{eff} > 1$ proves to be purely due to the presence of the GB coupling function, which in turn may have important consequences on enhancing the primordial gravitational waves' amplitude observed today. The inflationary e-fold number gets further constrained by the input of the reheating stage. We finally construct the complete forms of scalar potential ($V(ϕ)$) and the GB coupling ($ξ(ϕ)$) function that smoothly transits from inflation to reheating, and numerically solve the Hubble parameter and the scalar field for such complete forms of $V(ϕ)$ and $ξ(ϕ)$.

Early Dark Energy with Power-law F(R) Gravity

We study a power-law $F(R)$ gravity with an early dark energy term, that can describe both the early-time and the late-time acceleration of the Universe. We confront this scenario with recent observational data including the Pantheon Type Ia supernovae, measurements of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$ (Cosmic Chronometers), data from Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and standard rulers data from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. The model demonstrates some achievements in confronting with these observations and can be compared with the $Λ$-Cold-Dark-Matter model. In particular, in both models we obtain very close estimates for the Hubble constant $H_0$, but it is not true for $Ω_m^0$. The early dark energy term supports viability of the considered $F(R)$ gravity model.

Holographic realization of constant roll inflation and dark energy: An unified scenario

Based on generalized holographic formalism, we establish a holographic realization of constant roll inflation during the early universe, where the corresponding cut-off depends on the Hubble parameter and its derivatives (up to the second order). The viability of this holographic constant roll inflation with respect to the Planck data in turn puts a certain bound on the infrared cut-off at the time of horizon crossing. Such holographic correspondence of constant roll inflation is extended to the scenario where the infrared cut-off is corrected by the ultraviolet one, which may originate due to quantum effects. Besides the mere inflation, we further propose the holographic realization of an $unified$ cosmic scenario from constant roll inflation (at the early time) to the dark energy era (at the late time) with an intermediate radiation dominated era followed by a Kamionkowski like reheating stage. In such a unified holographic scenario, the inflationary quantities (like the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio) and the dark energy quantities (like the dark energy EoS parameter and the present Hubble rate) prove to be simultaneously compatible with observable constraints for suitable ranges of the infrared cut-off and the other model parameters. Moreover the curvature perturbations at super-Hubble scale prove to be a constant (with time) during the entire cosmic era, which in turn ensures the stability of the model under consideration.
