The inflationary universe in F(R) gravity with antisymmetric tensor fields and their suppression during the universe evolution

The intriguing question, why the present scale of the universe is free from any perceptible footprints of rank-2 antisymmetric tensor fields? (generally known as Kalb-Ramond fields) is addressed. A quite natural explanation of this issue is given from the angle of higher-curvature gravity, both in four- and in five-dimensional spacetime. The results here obtained reveal that the amplitude of the Kalb-Ramond field may be actually large and play a significant role during the early universe, while the presence of higher-order gravity suppresses this field during the cosmological evolution, so that it eventually becomes negligible in the current universe. Besides the suppression of the Kalb-Ramond field, the extra degree of freedom in $F(R)$ gravity, usually known as scalaron, also turns out to be responsible for inflation. Such F(R) gravity with Kalb-Ramond fields may govern the early universe to undergo an inflationary stage at early times (with the subsequent graceful exit) for wider range of F(R) gravity than without antisymmetric fields.. Furthermore, the models---in four- and five-dimensional spacetimes---are linked to observational constraints, with the conclusion that the corresponding values of the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio closely match the values provided by the Planck survey 2018 data.

Screened and Unscreened Solutions for Relativistic Star in de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) Massive Gravity

We study the static and spherical symmetric (SSS) configurations in the non-minimal model of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley (dRGT) massive gravity with a flat reference metric. Considering the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equation, the Bianchi identity, and energy-momentum conservation, we find a new algebraic equation for the radial coordinate of the reference metric. We demonstrate that this equation suggests an absence of the Vainshtein mechanism in the minimal model of the dRGT massive gravity, while it has two branches of solutions where one connects with the Schwarzschild space-time and another implies the significant deviation from the asymptotically flat space-time in the non-minimal model. We also briefly discuss the boundary conditions for the relativistic stars in the dRGT massive gravity and a potential relation with the mass-radius relation of the stars.

Testing logarithmic corrections on $R^2$-exponential gravity by observational data

This paper is devoted to the analysis of a class of $F(R)$ gravity, where additional logarithmic corrections are assumed. The gravitational action includes an exponential term and a $R^2$ inflationary term, both with logarithmic corrections. This model can unify an early time inflationary era and also the late time acceleration of the universe expansion. This model is deeply analysed, confronting with recent observational data coming from the largest Pantheon Type Ia supernovae sample, the latest measurements of the Hubble parameter $H(z)$, manifestations of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations and Cosmic Microwave Background radiation. The viability of the model is studied and the corresponding constraints on the free parameters are obtained, leading to an statistical analysis in comparison to $Λ$CDM model. The inflationary era is also analysed within this model and its compatibility with the latest observational data for the spectral index of primordial curvature perturbations and the scalar-to-tensor ratio. Finally, possible corrections on the Newton's law and constraints due to primordial nucleosynthesis are analysed.

Thermodynamically allowed phantom cosmology with viscous fluid

In this work we present an analysis of the phantom zone in a causal viscous cosmology from a thermodynamic point of view. In this description we consider a chemical potential and the approach of irreversible processes. We assume a flat universe filled with a single dissipative fluid described by a barotropic equation of state, $p = ωρ$. This model allows to construct a negative chemical potential for the phantom regime but also this construction allows us to have positive definite temperature and entropy.

On the propagation of gravitational waves in strong magnetic fields

The propagation of gravitational waves is explored in the cosmological context. It is explicitly demonstrated that the propagation of gravitational waves could be influenced by the medium. It is shown that in the thermal radiation, the propagation of gravitational waves in general relativity is different from that in the scalar-tensor theory. The propagation of gravitational waves is investigated in the uniform magnetic field. As a result, it is found that cosmic magnetic fields could influence on the propagation of gravitational waves to non-negligible extent. The corresponding estimation for the spiral galaxy NGC 6946 effect is made.

Effects of modified gravity on the turnaround radius in cosmology

We revisit the concept of turnaround radius in cosmology, in the context of modified gravity. While preliminary analyses were limited to scalar-tensor/$F(R)$ gravity, we extend the definition and the study of this quantity to a much broader class of theories including also quantum $R^2$ gravity. The turnaround radius is computed in terms of the parameters of the theory and it is shown that a deviation not larger than 10\% of this quantity from its value in Einstein's theory could constrain the model parameters and even rule out some current theories.

The role of energy conditions in $f(R)$ cosmology

Energy conditions can play an important role in defining the cosmological evolution. Specifically acceleration/deceleration of cosmic fluid, as well as the emergence of Big Rip singularities, can be related to the constraints imposed by the energy conditions. Here we discuss this issue for $f(R)$ gravity considering also conformal transformations. Cosmological solutions and equations of state can be classified according to energy conditions. The qualitative change of some energy conditions for transformations from the Jordan frame to the Einstein frame is also observed.

Cosmological Bound from the Neutron Star Merger GW170817 in scalar-tensor and $F(R)$ gravity theories

We consider the evolution of cosmological gravitational waves in scalar-tensor theory and $F(R)$ gravity theory as typical models of the modified gravity. Although the propagation speed is not changed from the speed of light, the propagation phase changes when we compare the propagation in these modified gravity theories with the propagation in the $Λ$CDM model. The phase change might be detected in future observations.

Is exponential gravity a viable description for the whole cosmological history?

Here we analysed a particular type of $F(R)$ gravity, the so-called exponential gravity which includes an exponential function of the Ricci scalar in the action. Such term represents a correction to the usual Hilbert-Einstein action. By using Supernovae Ia, Barionic Acoustic Oscillations, Cosmic Microwave Background and $H(z)$ data, the free parameters of the model are well constrained. The results show that such corrections to General Relativity become important at cosmological scales and at late-times, providing an alternative to the dark energy problem. In addition, the fits do not determine any significant difference statistically with respect to the $Λ$CDM model. Finally, such model is extended to include the inflationary epoch in the same gravitational Lagrangian. As shown in the paper, the additional terms can reproduce the inflationary epoch and satisfy the constraints from Planck data.

The realistic models of relativistic stars in f(R) = R + alpha R^2 gravity

In the context of f(R)=R + alpha R^2 gravity, we study the existence of neutron and quark stars with no intermediate approximations in the generalised system of Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkov equations. Analysis shows that for positive alpha's the scalar curvature does not drop to zero at the star surface (as in General Relativity) but exponentially decreases with distance. Also the stellar mass bounded by star surface decreases when the value alpha increases. Nonetheless distant observers would observe a gravitational mass due to appearance of a so-called gravitational sphere around the star. The non-zero curvature contribution to the gravitational mass eventually is shown to compensate the stellar mass decrease for growing alpha's. We perform our analysis for several equations of state including purely hadronic configurations as well as hyperons and quark stars. In all cases, we assess that the relation between the parameter $α$ and the gravitational mass weakly depend upon the chosen equation of state. Another interesting feature is the increase of the star radius in comparison to General Relativity for stars with masses close to maximal, whereas for intermediate masses around 1.4-1.6 solar masses, the radius of star depends upon alpha very weakly. Also the decrease in the mass bounded by star surface may cause the surface redshift to decrease in R^2-gravity when compared to Einsteinian predictions. This effect is shown to hardly depend upon the observed gravitational mass. Finally, for negative values of alpha our analysis shows that outside the star the scalar curvature has damped oscillations but the contribution of the gravitational sphere into the gravitational mass increases indefinitely with radial distance putting into question the very existence of such relativistic stars.

An alternative attractor in gauged NJL inflation

We have investigated the attractor structure for the CMB fluctuations in composite inflation scenario within the gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. Such composite inflation represents an attractor which can not be found in a fundamental scalar model. As is known, the number of inflationary models contains the attractor classified by the $α$-attractor model. It is found that the attractor inflation in the gauged NJL model corresponds to the $α= 2$ case.

Viscous Cosmology for Early- and Late-Time Universe

From a hydrodynamicist's point of view the inclusion of viscosity concepts in the macroscopic theory of the cosmic fluid would appear most natural, as an ideal fluid is after all an abstraction (excluding special cases such as superconductivity). Making use of modern observational results for the Hubble parameter plus standard Friedmann formalism, we may extrapolate the description of the universe back in time up to the inflationary era, or we may go to the opposite extreme and analyze the probable ultimate fate of the universe. In this review we discuss a variety of topics in cosmology when it is enlarged in order to contain a bulk viscosity. Various forms of this viscosity, when expressed in terms of the fluid density or the Hubble parameter, are discussed. Furthermore, we consider homogeneous as well as inhomogeneous equations of state. We investigate viscous cosmology in the early universe, examining the viscosity effects on the various inflationary observables. Additionally, we study viscous cosmology in the late universe, containing current acceleration and the possible future singularities, and we investigate how one may even unify inflationary and late-time acceleration. Finally, we analyze the viscosity-induced crossing through the quintessence-phantom divide, we examine the realization of viscosity-driven cosmological bounces, and we briefly discuss how the Cardy-Verlinde formula is affected by viscosity.

Inflationary cosmology in unimodular $F(T)$ gravity

We investigate the inflationary realization in the context of unimodular $F(T)$ gravity, which is based on the $F(T)$ modification of teleparallel gravity, in which one imposes the unimodular condition through the use of Lagrange multipliers. We develop the general reconstruction procedure of the $F(T)$ form that can give rise to a given scale-factor evolution, and then we apply it in the inflationary regime. We extract the Hubble slow-roll parameters that allow us to calculate various inflation-related observables, such as the scalar spectral index and its running, the tensor-to-scalar ratio, and the tensor spectral index. Then, we examine the particular cases of de Sitter and power-law inflation, of Starobinsky inflation, as well as inflation in a specific model of unimodular $F(T)$ gravity. As we show, in all cases the predictions of our scenarios are in a very good agreement with Planck observational data. Finally, inflation in unimodular $F(T)$ gravity has the additional advantage that it always allows for a graceful exit for specific regions of the model parameters.

The evolution of gravitons in accelerating cosmologies: the case of extended gravity

We discuss the production and evolution of cosmological gravitons showing how the cosmological background affects their dynamics. Besides, the detection of cosmological gravitons could constitute an extremely important signature to discriminate among different cosmological models. Here we consider the cases of scalar-tensor gravity and $f(R)$ gravity where it is demonstrated the amplification of graviton amplitude changes if compared with General Relativity. Possible observational constraints are discussed.

Inflation from the Finite Scale Gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio Model

The possibility to construct an inflationary universe scenario for the finite-scale gauged Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model is investigated. This model can be described by the Higgs-Yukawa type interaction model with the corresponding compositeness scale. Therefore, the one-loop Higgs-Yukawa effective potential is used with the compositeness condition for the study of inflationary dynamics. We evaluate the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background for the model with a finite compositeness scale in the slow-roll approximation. We find the remarkable dependence on the gauge group and the number of fermion flavors. It is also proved that the model has similar behavior with the $ϕ^{4n}$ chaotic inflation and the Starobinsky model at the flat and steep limits, respectively. It is demonstrated that realistic inflation consistent with Planck data is possible for a range of theory parameters.

Deceleration versus Acceleration Universe in Different Frames of $F(R)$ Gravity

In this paper we study the occurrence of accelerating universe versus decelerating universe between the F(R) gravity frame (Jordan frame) and non-minimally coupled scalar field theory frame, and the minimally coupled scalar field theory frame (Einstein frame) for various models. As we show, if acceleration is imposed in one frame, it will not necessarily correspond to an accelerating metric when transformed in another frame. As we will demonstrate, this issue is model and frame-dependent but it seems there is no general scheme which permits to classify such cases.

Spotting deviations from R^2 inflation

We discuss the soundness of inflationary scenarios in theories beyond the Starobinsky model, namely a class of theories described by arbitrary functions of the Ricci scalar and the K-essence field. We discuss the pathologies associated with higher-order equations of motion which will be shown to constrain the stability of this class of theories. We provide a general framework to calculate the slow-roll parameters and the corresponding mappings to the theory parameters. For paradigmatic gravitational models within the class of theories under consideration we illustrate the power of the Planck/Bicep2 latest results to constrain such gravitational Lagrangians. Finally, bounds for potential deviations from Starobinsky-like inflation are derived.

Relativistic Stars in dRGT Massive Gravity

We study relativistic stars in the simplest model of the de Rham-Gabadadze-Tolley massive gravity which describes the massive graviton without ghost propagating mode. We consider the hydrostatic equilibrium, and obtain the modified Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation and the constraint equation coming from the potential terms in the gravitational action. We give analytical and numerical results for quark and neutron stars and discuss the deviations compared with General Relativity and $F(R)$ gravity. It is shown that theory under investigation leads to small deviation from the General Relativity in terms of density profiles and mass-radius relation. Nevertheless, such deviation may be observable in future astrophysical probes.
