Inflationary Parameters in Renormalization Group Improved $ϕ^4$ Theory

Inflation models can be examined by the cosmological observations, WMAP, Planck, BICEP2 and so on. These observations directly constrain the spectral index, $n_s$, and the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$. Besides, from a theoretical point of view, it has been shown that any inflation models asymptote a universal attractor in $(n_s,r)$ plane for a larger scalar-gravity coupling. In this work we consider a simple chaotic inflation model with a scalar quartic and a scalar-curvature interactions. The quantum corrections are introduced for these interactions through the renormalization group. The inflationary parameters, $n_s$ and $r$, are numerically calculated with shifting the bare scalar-gravity coupling $ξ_0$, the quartic scalar bare coupling $λ_0$, the renormalization scale $μ$ and the e-folding number $N$. The Planck data is consistent with the $ϕ^4$ theory with a finite scalar-curvature coupling. It is found that the RG running induces a non-universal contribution for $n_s$ and $r$. It can increase the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, which is consistent with Planck data so that it may approach the BICEP2 data for a small renormalization scale.

Maximal neutron star mass and the resolution of hyperon puzzle in modified gravity

The so-called hyperon puzzle in the theory of neutron stars is considered in the framework of modified $f(R)$ gravity. We show that for simple hyperon equations of state, it is possible to obtain the maximal neutron star mass which satisfies the recent observational data for PSR J1614-2230, in higher-derivative models with power-law terms as $f(R) = R+αR^2+ βR^3$. The soft hyperon equation of state under consideration is usually treated as non-realistic in the standard General Relativity. The numerical analysis of Mass-Radius relation for massive neutron stars with hyperon equation of state in modified gravity turns out to be consistent with observations. Thus, we show that the same modified gravity can solve at once three problems: consistent description of the maximal mass of neutron star, realistic Mass-Radius relation and account for hyperons in equation of state.

Born-Infeld gravity and its functional extensions

We investigate the dynamics of a family of functional extensions of the (Eddington-inspired) Born-Infeld gravity theory, constructed with the inverse of the metric and the Ricci tensor. We provide a generic formal solution for the connection and an Einstein-like representation for the metric field equations of this family of theories. For particular cases we consider applications to the early-time cosmology and find that non-singular universes with a cosmic bounce are very generic and robust solutions.

Noether Symmetry Approach in Gauss-Bonnet Cosmology

We discuss the Noether Symmetry Approach in the framework of Gauss-Bonnet cosmology showing that the functional form of the $F(R, {\cal G})$ function, where $R$ is the Ricci scalar and ${\cal G}$ is the Gauss-Bonnet topological invariant, can be determined by the presence of symmetries. Besides, the method allows to find out exact solutions due to the reduction of cosmological dynamical system and the presence of conserved quantities. Some specific cosmological models are worked out

Magnetic Neutron Stars in f(R) gravity

Neutron stars with strong magnetic fields are considered in the framework of f(R) gravity. In order to describe dense matter in magnetic field, the model with baryon octet interacting through $σ$$ρ$$ω$-fields is used. The hyperonization process results in softening the equation of state (EoS) and in decreasing the maximal mass. We investigate the effect of strong magnetic field in models involving quadratic and cubic corrections in the Ricci scalar $R$ to the Hilbert-Einstein action. For large fields, the Mass-Radius relation differs considerably from that of General Relativity only for stars with masses close to the maximal one. Another interesting feature is the possible existence of more compact stable stars with extremely large magnetic fields ($\sim 6\times 10^{18}$ G instead of $\sim 4\times 10^{18}$ G as in General Relativity) in the central regions of the stars. Due to cubic terms, a significant increasing of the maximal mass is possible.

One-loop Modified Gravity in de Sitter Universe, Quantum Corrected Inflation, and its Confrontation with the Planck Result

Motivated by issues on inflation, a generalized modified gravity model is investigated, where the model Lagrangian is described by a smooth function $f(R, K, ϕ)$ of the Ricci scalar $R$, the kinetic term $K$ of a scalar field $ϕ$. In particular, the one-loop effective action in the de Sitter background is examined on-shell as well as off-shell in the Landau gauge. In addition, the on-shell quantum equivalence of $f(R)$ gravity in the Jordan and Einstein frames is explicitly demonstrated. Furthermore, we present applications related to the stability of the de Sitter solutions and the one-loop quantum correction to inflation in quantum-corrected $R^2$ gravity. It is shown that for a certain range of parameters, the spectral index of the curvature perturbations can be consistent with the Planck analysis, but the tensor-to-scalar ratio is smaller than the minimum value within the 1 $σ$ error range of the BICEP2 result.

Little Rip, $Λ$CDM and singular dark energy cosmology from Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity

We study late-time cosmic accelerating dynamics from Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity in a simplified conformal approach. We find that a variety of cosmic efects such as Little Rip, $Λ$CDM universe and dark energy cosmology with finite-time future singularities may occur. Unlike the convenient Born-Infeld gravity where in the absence of matter only de Sitter expansion may emerge, apparentlly any FRW cosmology maybe reconstructed from this conformal version of the Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ theory. Despite the fact that the explicit form of $f(R)$ is fixed by the conformal ansatz, the relation between the two metrics in this approach may be changed so as to bring out any desired FRW cosmology.

Bouncing cosmology in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity

We explore bounce cosmology in $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant $\mathcal{G}$. We reconstruct $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity theory to realize the bouncing behavior in the early universe and examine the stability conditions for its cosmological solutions. It is demonstrated that the bouncing behavior with an exponential as well as a power-law scale factor naturally occurs in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We also derive the $F(\mathcal{G})$ gravity model to produce the ekpyrotic scenario. Furthermore, we construct the bounce with the scale factor composed of a sum of two exponential functions and show that not only the early-time bounce but also the late-time cosmic acceleration can occur in the corresponding modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Also, the bounce and late-time solutions in this unified model is explicitly analyzed.

Universe acceleration in modified gravities: $F(R)$ and $F(T)$ cases

We review recent progress on cosmological issues and theoretical properties of modified gravity theories. In particular, we explicitly explore the conformal transformation, the Starobinsky inflation, and a unified scenario of inflation and late time acceleration in $F(R)$ gravity and $F(T)$ gravity (extended teleparallel gravity). Furthermore, we examine neutron stars and the hyperon problem in $F(R)$ gravity. Moreover, for loop quantum cosmology (LQC), the natures of finite-time future singularities in $F(T)$ gravity are presented. In addition, we investigate $F(T)$ gravity theories from the Kaluza-Klein (KK) and Randall-Sundrum (RS) theories.

Trace-anomaly driven inflation in $f(T)$ gravity and in minimal massive bigravity

We explore trace-anomaly driven inflation in modified gravity. It is explicitly shown that in $T^2$ teleparallel gravity, the de Sitter inflation can occur, although quasi de Sitter inflation happens in $R^2$ gravity. Furthermore, we investigate the influence of the trace anomaly on inflation. It is found that in $f(T)$ gravity, the de Sitter inflation can end because it becomes unstable due to the trace anomaly, whereas also in higher derivative gravity, the de Sitter inflation can be realized and it will be over thanks to the trace anomaly for smaller parameter regions in comparison with those in teleparallelism. The instability of the de Sitter inflation in $T^2$ gravity and $R^2$ gravity (both with taking account of the trace anomaly) is examined. In addition, we study trace-anomaly driven inflation in minimal massive bigravity, where the contribution from the massive graviton acts as negative cosmological constant. It is demonstrated that the de Sitter inflation can occur and continue for long enough duration.

Possible antigravity regions in $F(R)$ theory?

We construct an $F(R)$ gravity theory corresponding to the Weyl invariant two scalar field theory. We investigate whether such $F(R)$ gravity can have the antigravity regions where the Weyl curvature invariant does not diverge at the Big Bang and Big Crunch singularities. It is revealed that the divergence cannot be evaded completely but can be much milder than that in the original Weyl invariant two scalar field theory.

Bounce cosmology from $F(R)$ gravity and $F(R)$ bigravity

We reconstruct $F(R)$ gravity models with exponential and power-law forms of the scale factor in which bounce cosmology can be realized. We explore the stability of the reconstructed models with analyzing the perturbations from the background solutions. Furthermore, we study an $F(R)$ gravity model with a sum of exponentials form of the scale factor, where the bounce in the early universe as well as the late-time cosmic acceleration can be realized in a unified manner. As a result, we build a second order polynomial type model in terms of $R$ and show that it could be stable. Moreover, when the scale factor is expressed by an exponential form, we derive $F(R)$ gravity models of a polynomial type in case of the non-zero spatial curvature and that of a generic type in that of the zero spatial curvature. In addition, for an exponential form of the scale factor, an $F(R)$ bigravity model realizing the bouncing behavior is reconstructed. It is found that in both the physical and reference metrics the bouncing phenomenon can occur, although in general the contraction and expansion rates are different each other.

Further stable neutron star models from f(R) gravity

Neutron star models in perturbative $f(R)$ gravity are considered with realistic equations of state. In particular, we consider the FPS, SLy and other equations of state and a case of piecewise equation of state for stars with quark cores. The mass-radius relations for $f(R)=R+R(e^{-R/R_{0}}-1)$ model and for $R^2$ models with logarithmic and cubic corrections are obtained. In the case of $R^2$ gravity with cubic corrections, we obtain that at high central densities ($ρ>10ρ_{ns}$, where $ρ_{ns}=2.7\times 10^{14}$ g/cm$^{3}$ is the nuclear saturation density), stable star configurations exist. The minimal radius of such stars is close to $9$ km with maximal mass $\sim 1.9 M_{\odot}$ (SLy equation). A similar situation takes place for AP4 and BSK20 EoS. Such an effect can give rise to more compact stars than in General Relativity. If observationally identified, such objects could constitute a formidable signature for modified gravity at astrophysical level. Another interesting result can be achieved in modified gravity with only a cubic correction. For some EoS, the upper limit of neutron star mass increases and therefore these EoS can describe realistic star configurations (although, in General Relativity, these EoS are excluded by observational constraints).

New proposal for non-linear ghost-free massive $F(R)$ gravity: cosmic acceleration and Hamiltonian analysis

We propose new version of massive $F(R)$ gravity which is natural generalization of convenient massive ghost-free gravity. Its Hamiltonian formulation in scalar-tensor frame is developed. We show that such $F(R)$ theory is ghost-free. The cosmological evolution of such theory is investigated. Despite the strong Bianchi identity constraint the possibility of cosmic acceleration (especially, in the presence of cold dark matter) is established. Ghost-free massive $F(R,T)$ gravity is also proposed.

Conformal symmetry and accelerating cosmology in teleparallel gravity

We discuss conformal issues of pure and extended teleparallel gravity. In particular, we present formulations of conformal transformation in teleparallel gravity. Furthermore, we propose conformal scalar and gauge field theories in teleparallel gravity and study conformal torsion gravity. We explicitly demonstrate that a power-law acceleration (including the $Λ$CDM universe) as well as the de Sitter expansion of the universe can be realized in extended teleparallel gravity with a conformal scalar field, and that pure teleparallel gravity with a conformal scalar field can lead to the $Λ$CDM model. It is also shown that there can exist the de Sitter solution in conformal torsion gravity.

f(R, T, R_μνT^μν) gravity phenomenology and ΛCDM universe

We propose general f(R,T,R_{μν}T^{μν}) theory as generalization of covariant Horava-like gravity with dynamical Lorentz symmetry breaking. FRLW cosmological dynamics for several versions of such theory is considered. The reconstruction of the above action is explicitly done, including the numerical reconstruction for the occurrence of ΛCDM universe. De Sitter universe solutions in the presence of non-constant fluid are also presented. The problem of matter instability in f(R,T,R_{μν}T^{μν}) gravity is discussed.

Effective $F(T)$ gravity from the higher-dimensional Kaluza-Klein and Randall-Sundrum theories

We explore the four-dimensional effective $F(T)$ gravity with $T$ the torsion scalar in teleparallelism originating from higher-dimensional space-time theories, in particular the Kaluza-Klein (KK) and Randall-Sundrum (RS) theories. First, through the KK dimensional reduction from the five-dimensional space-time, we obtain the four-dimensional effective theory of $F(T)$ gravity with its coupling to a scalar field. Second, taking the RS type-II model in which there exist the five-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (AdS) space-time with four-dimensional Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) brane, we find that there will appear the contribution of $F(T)$ gravity on the four-dimensional FLRW brane. It is demonstrated that inflation and the dark energy dominated stage can be realized in the KK and RS models, respectively, due to the effect of only the torsion in teleparallelism without that of the curvature.

Accelerating cosmology in modified gravity: from convenient $F(R)$ or string-inspired theory to bimetric $F(R)$ gravity

We consider modified gravity which may describe the early-time inflation and/or late-time cosmic acceleration of the universe. In particular, we discuss the properties of $F(R)$, $F(G)$, string-inspired and scalar-Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravities, including their FRW equations and fluid or scalar-tensor description. Simplest accelerating cosmologies are investigated and possibility of unified description of the inflation with dark energy is described. The cosmological reconstruction program which permits to get the requested universe evolution from modified gravity is developed. As some extension, massive $F(R)$ bigravity which is ghost-free theory is presented. Its scalar-tensor form turns out to be the easiest formulation. The cosmological reconstruction method for such bigravity is presented. The unified description of inflation with dark energy in $F(R)$ bigravity turns out to be possible.
