Phantom Cosmology without Big Rip Singularity

We construct phantom energy models with the equation-of-state parameter $w$ such that $w<-1$, but finite-time future singularity does not occur. Such models can be divided into two classes: (i) energy density increases with time ("phantom energy" without "Big Rip" singularity) and (ii) energy density tends to constant value with time ("cosmological constant" with asymptotically de Sitter evolution). The disintegration of bound structure is confirmed in Little Rip cosmology. Surprisingly, we find that such disintegration (on example of Sun-Earth system) may occur even in asymptotically de Sitter phantom universe consistent with observational data. We also demonstrate that non-singular phantom models admit wormhole solutions as well as possibility of big trip via wormholes.

Models for Little Rip Dark Energy

We examine in more detail specific models which yield a little rip cosmology, i.e., a universe in which the dark energy density increases without bound but the universe never reaches a finite-time singularity. We derive the conditions for the little rip in terms of the inertial force in the expanding universe and present two representative models to illustrate in more detail the difference between little rip models and those which are asymptotically de Sitter. We derive conditions on the equation of state parameter of the dark energy to distinguish between the two types of models. We show that coupling between dark matter and dark energy with a little rip equation of state can alter the evolution, changing the little rip into an asymptotic de Sitter expansion. We give conditions on minimally-coupled phantom scalar field models and on scalar-tensor models that indicate whether or not they correspond to a little rip expansion. We show that, counterintuitively, despite local instability, a little-rip cosmology has an infinite lifetime.

Domain wall solution in $F(R)$ gravity and variation of the fine structure constant

We construct a domain wall solution in $F(R)$ gravity. We reconstruct a static domain wall solution in a scalar field theory. We also reconstruct an explicit $F(R)$ gravity model in which a static domain wall solution can be realized. Moreover, we show that there could exist an effective (gravitational) domain wall in the framework of $F(R)$ gravity. In addition, it is demonstrated that a logarithmic non-minimal gravitational coupling of the electromagnetic theory in $F(R)$ gravity may produce time-variation of the fine structure constant which may increase with decrease of the curvature, and that this model would be ruled out by the constraints on the time variation of the fine structure constant from quasar absorption lines. We also present cosmological consequences of the coupling of the electromagnetic field to a scalar field as well as the scalar curvature and discuss the relation between variation of the fine structure constant and the breaking of the conformal invariance of the electromagnetic field.

f(R,T) gravity

We consider f(R,T) modified theories of gravity, where the gravitational Lagrangian is given by an arbitrary function of the Ricci scalar R and of the trace of the stress-energy tensor T. We obtain the gravitational field equations in the metric formalism, as well as the equations of motion for test particles, which follow from the covariant divergence of the stress-energy tensor. Generally, the gravitational field equations depend on the nature of the matter source. The field equations of several particular models, corresponding to some explicit forms of the function f(R,T), are also presented. An important case, which is analyzed in detail, is represented by scalar field models. We write down the action and briefly consider the cosmological implications of the $f(R,T^ϕ)$ models, where $T^ϕ$ is the trace of the stress-energy tensor of a self-interacting scalar field. The equations of motion of the test particles are also obtained from a variational principle. The motion of massive test particles is non-geodesic, and takes place in the presence of an extra force orthogonal to the four-velocity. The Newtonian limit of the equation of motion is further analyzed. Finally, we provide a constraint on the magnitude of the extra-acceleration by analyzing the perihelion precession of the planet Mercury in the framework of the present model.

Unified cosmic history in modified gravity: from F(R) theory to Lorentz non-invariant models

Classical generalization of general relativity is considered as gravitational alternative for unified description of the early-time inflation with late-time cosmic acceleration. The structure and cosmological properties of number of modified theories, including traditional $F(R)$ and Hořava-Lifshitz $F(R)$ gravity, scalar-tensor theory, string-inspired and Gauss-Bonnet theory, non-local gravity, non-minimally coupled models, and power-counting renormalizable covariant gravity are discussed. Different representations and relations between such theories are investigated. It is shown that some versions of above theories may be consistent with local tests and may provide qualitatively reasonable unified description of inflation with dark energy epoch. The cosmological reconstruction of different modified gravities is made in great detail. It is demonstrated that eventually any given universe evolution may be reconstructed for the theories under consideration: the explicit reconstruction is applied to accelerating spatially-flat FRW universe. Special attention is paid to Lagrange multiplier constrained and conventional $F(R)$ gravities, for last theory the effective $Λ$CDM era and phantom-divide crossing acceleration are obtained. The occurrence of Big Rip and other finite-time future singularities in modified gravity is reviewed as well as its curing via the addition of higher-derivative gravitational invariants.

Covariant Lagrange multiplier constrained higher derivative gravity with scalar projectors

We formulate higher derivative gravity with Lagrange multiplier constraint and scalar projectors. Its gauge-fixed formulation as well as vector fields formulation is developed and corresponding spontaneous Lorentz symmetry breaking is investigated. We show that the only propagating mode is higher derivative graviton while scalar and vector modes do not propagate. Despite to higher derivatives structure of the action, its first FRW equation is the first order differential equation which admits the inflationary universe solution.

On Isotropic Turbulence in the Dark Fluid Universe

As first part of this work, experimental information about the decay of isotropic turbulence in ordinary hydrodynamics, u^2(t) proportional to t^{-6/5}, is used as input in FRW equations in order to investigate how an initial fraction f of turbulent kinetic energy in the cosmic fluid influences the cosmological development in the late, quintessence/phantom, universe. First order perturbative theory to the first order in f is employed. It turns out that both in the Hubble factor, and in the energy density, the influence from the turbulence fades away at late times. The divergences in these quantities near the Big Rip behave essentially as in a non-turbulent fluid. However, for the scale factor, the turbulence modification turns out to diverge logarithmically. As second part of our work, we consider the full FRW equation in which the turbulent part of the dark energy is accounted for by a separate term. It is demonstrated that turbulence occurrence may change the future universe evolution due to dissipation of dark energy. For instance, phantom-dominated universe becomes asymptotically a de Sitter one in the future, thus avoiding the Big Rip singularity.

Time-dependent matter instability and star singularity in $F(R)$ gravity

We investigate a curvature singularity appearing in the star collapse process in $F(R)$ gravity. In particular, we propose an understanding of the mechanism to produce the curvature singularity. Moreover, we explicitly demonstrate that $R^α$ ($1 < α\leq 2$) term addition could cure the curvature singularity and viable $F(R)$ gravity models could become free of such a singularity. Furthermore, we discuss the realization process of the curvature singularity and estimate the time scale of its appearance. For exponential gravity, it is shown that in case of the star collapse, the time scale is much shorter than the age of the universe, whereas in cosmological circumstances, it is as long as the cosmological time.

U(1) Invariant F(R) Horava-Lifshitz Gravity

This paper is devoted to the study of various aspects of projectable F(R) Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity. We show that some versions of F(R) HL gravity may have stable de Sitter solution and instable flat space solution. In this case, the problem of scalar graviton does not appear because flat space is not vacuum state. Generalizing the U(1) HL theory proposed in arXiv:1007.2410, we formulate U(1) extension of scalar theory and of F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity. The Hamiltonian approach for such the theory is developed in full detail. It is demonstrated that its Hamiltonian structure is the same as for the non-relativistic covariant HL gravity. The spectrum analysis performed around flat background indicates towards the consistency of the theory because it contains graviton with only transverse polarization. Finally, we analyze the spatially-flat FRW equations for U(1) invariant F(R) Horava-Lifshitz gravity.

Screening of cosmological constant in non-local gravity

We discuss a possible mechanism to screen a cosmological constant in non-local gravity. We find that in a simple model of of non-local gravity with the Lagrangian of the form, $R+f(\Box^{-1}R)-2Λ$ where $f(X)$ is a quadratic function of $X$, there is a flat spacetime solution despite the presence of the cosmological constant $Λ$. Unfortunately, however, we also find that this solution contains a ghost in general. Then we discuss the condition to avoid a ghost and find that one can avoid it only for a finite range of `time'. Nevertheless our result suggests the possibility of solving the cosmological constant problem in the context of non-local gravity.

Non-singular modified gravity unifying inflation with late-time acceleration and universality of viscous ratio bound in F(R) theory

The review of basic cosmological properties of four-dimensional F(R)-gravity, including FRW equations of motion and its accelerating solutions, generalized fluid and scalar-tensor representation of the theory is done. Cosmological reconstruction equation is written and conditions for stability of cosmological solution are discussed. The overview of realistic F(R)-models unifying inflation with dark energy epoch is made. The avoidance of finite-time future singularities in such theories via the introduction of R^2-term is studied. New realistic non-singular F(R)-gravity unifying early-time inflation with late-time acceleration is presented. The exit from inflationary era in such model may be caused by the gravitational scenario. It is demonstrated that five-dimensional F(R)-gravity considered as non-perturbative stringy effective action leads to universal relation for viscous bound ratio.

Cardy-Verlinde formula in FRW Universe with inhomogeneous generalized fluid and dynamical entropy bounds near the future singularity

We derive a Cardy-Verlinde-like formula which relates the entropy of the closed FRW universe to its energy, and Casimir energy, for a multicomponent coupled fluid. The generalized fluid obeys an inhomogeneous equation of state. A viscous dark fluid is included, and we include also modified gravity using its fluid representation. It is demonstrated how such an expression reduces to the standard Cardy-Verlinde formula corresponding to the 2d CFT entropy only in some special cases. The dynamical entropy bound for a closed FRW universe with dark components is obtained. The universality of the dynamical entropy bound near a future singularity (of all four types), as well as near the Big Bang singularity, is investigated. It is demonstrated that except from some special cases of Type II and Type IV singularities the dynamical entropy bound is violated near the singularity even if quantum effects are taken into account. The dynamical entropy bound seems to be universal for the case of a regular universe, including the asymptotic de Sitter one.

Dark energy from modified gravity with Lagrange multipliers

We study scalar-tensor theory, k-essence and modified gravity with Lagrange multiplier constraint which role is to reduce the number of degrees of freedom. Dark Energy cosmology of different types ($Λ$CDM, unified inflation with DE, smooth non-phantom/phantom transition epoch) is reconstructed in such models. It is shown that mathematical equivalence between scalar theory and $F(R)$ gravity is broken due to presence of constraint. The cosmological dynamics of $F(R)$ gravity is modified by the second $F_2(R)$ function dictated by the constraint. Dark Energy cosmology is defined by this function while standard $F_1(R)$ function is relevant for local tests (modification of newton regime). A general discussion on the role of Lagrange multipliers to make higher-derivative gravity canonical is developed.

Covariant power-counting renormalizable gravity: Lorentz symmetry breaking and accelerating early-time FRW universe

We continue the study of covariant power-counting renormalizable gravity constrained by scalar Lagrange multiplier. Lorentz symmetry breaking is investigated in such a theory in comparison with the one in ghost condensation model. Covariant power-counting renormalizable vector gravity which is invariant under $U(1)$ gauge symmetry is proposed. Several forms of vector Lagrange multiplier in this theory are discussed. It is shown that covariant scalar/vector gravity under consideration may have power-law or de Sitter accelerating cosmological solution corresponding to inflationary era. Simplest black hole solution is obtained and dispersion relations for graviton are presented.

A proposal for covariant renormalizable field theory of gravity

The class of covariant gravity theories which have nice ultraviolet behavior and seem to be (super)-renormalizable is proposed. The apparent breaking of Lorentz invariance occurs due to the coupling with the effective fluid which is induced by Lagrange multiplier constrained scalar field. Spatially-flat FRW cosmology for such covariant field gravity may have accelerating solutions. Renormalizable versions of more complicated modified gravity which depends on Riemann and Ricci tensor squared may be constructed in the same way.

Reconstruction and deceleration-acceleration transitions in modified gravity

We discuss the cosmological reconstruction in modified Gauss-Bonnet and F(R) gravities. Two alternative representations of the action (with and without auxiliary scalar) are considered. The approximate description of deceleration-acceleration transition cosmologies is reconstructed. It is shown that cosmological solution containing Big Bang and Big Rip singularities may be reconstructed only using the representation with the auxiliary field. The analytical description of the deceleration-acceleration transition cosmology in modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is demonstrated to be impossible at sufficiently general conditions.

Finite-time future singularities in modified Gauss-Bonnet and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$ gravity and singularity avoidance

We study all four types of finite-time future singularities emerging in late-time accelerating (effective quintessence/phantom) era from $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity, where $R$ and $G$ are the Ricci scalar and the Gauss-Bonnet invariant, respectively. As an explicit example of $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity, we also investigate modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity, so-called $F(G)$-gravity. In particular, we reconstruct the $F(G)$-gravity and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity models where accelerating cosmologies realizing the finite-time future singularities emerge. Furthermore, we discuss a possible way to cure the finite-time future singularities in $F(G)$-gravity and $\mathcal{F}(R,G)$-gravity by taking into account higher-order curvature corrections. The example of non-singular realistic modified Gauss-Bonnet gravity is presented. It turns out that adding such non-singular modified gravity to singular Dark Energy makes the combined theory to be non-singular one as well.
