The Fayet-Iliopoulos term and nonlinear self-duality

The N = 1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action is known to describe the vector Goldstone multiplet for partially broken N = 2 rigid supersymmetry, and this model is believed to be unique. However, it can be deformed by adding the Fayet-Iliopoulos term without losing the second nonlinearly realized supersymmetry. Although the first supersymmetry then becomes spontaneously broken, the deformed action still describes partial N = 2 to N = 1 supersymmetry breaking. The unbroken supercharges in this theory correspond to a different choice of N = 1 subspace in the N = 2 superspace, as compared with the undeformed case. Implications of the Fayet-Iliopoulos term for general models for self-dual nonlinear supersymmetric electrodynamics are discussed. The known ubiquitous appearance of the Volkov-Akulov action in such models is explained. We also present a two-parameter duality-covariant deformation of the N = 1 supersymmetric Born-Infeld action as a model for partial breaking of N = 2 supersymmetry.

Different representations for the action principle in 4D N = 2 supergravity

Within the superspace formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 matter-coupled supergravity developed in arXiv:0805.4683, we elaborate two approaches to reduce the superfield action to components. One of them is based on the principle of projective invariance which is a purely N = 2 concept having no analogue in simple supergravity. In this approach, the component reduction of the action is performed without imposing any Wess-Zumino gauge condition, that is by keeping intact all the gauge symmetries of the superfield action, including the super-Weyl invariance. As a simple application, the c-map is derived for the first time from superfield supergravity. Our second approach to component reduction is based on the method of normal coordinates around a submanifold in a curved superspace, which we develop in detail. We derive differential equations which are obeyed by the vielbein and the connection in normal coordinates, and which can be used to reconstruct these objects, in principle in closed form. A separate equation is found for the super-determinant of the vielbein, which allows one to reconstruct it without a detailed knowledge of the vielbein. This approach is applicable to any supergravity theory in any number of space-time dimensions. As a simple application of this construction, we reduce an integral over the curved N = 2 superspace to that over the chiral subspace of the full superspace. We also give a new representation for the curved projective-superspace action principle as a chiral integral.

N = 2 supersymmetric sigma-models and duality

For two families of four-dimensional off-shell N = 2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models constructed originally in projective superspace, we develop their formulation in terms of N = 1 chiral superfields. Specifically, these theories are: (i) sigma-models on cotangent bundles T*M of arbitrary real analytic Kaehler manifolds M; (ii) general superconformal sigma-models described by weight-one polar supermultiplets. Using superspace techniques, we obtain a universal expression for the holomorphic symplectic two-form ω^{(2,0)} which determines the second supersymmetry transformation and is associated with the two complex structures of the hyperkaehler space T*M that are complimentary to the one induced from M. This two-form is shown to coincide with the canonical holomorphic symplectic structure. In the case (ii), we demonstrate that ω^{(2,0)} and the homothetic conformal Killing vector determine the explicit form of the superconformal transformations. At the heart of our construction is the duality (generalized Legendre transform) between off-shell N = 2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models and their on-shell N = 1 chiral realizations. We finally present the most general N = 2 superconformal nonlinear sigma-model formulated in terms of N = 1 chiral superfields. The approach developed can naturally be generalized in order to describe 5D and 6D superconformal nonlinear sigma-models in 4D N = 1 superspace.

New extended superconformal sigma models and Quaternion Kahler manifolds

Quaternion Kahler manifolds are known to be the target spaces for matter hypermultiplets coupled to N=2 supergravity. It is also known that there is a one-to-one correspondence between 4n-dimensional quaternion Kahler manifolds and those 4(n+1)-dimensional hyperkahler spaces which are the target spaces for rigid superconformal hypermultiplets (such spaces are called hyperkahler cones). In this paper we present a projective-superspace construction to generate a hyperkahler cone M^{4(n+1)}_H of dimension 4(n+1) from a 2n-dimensional real analytic Kahler-Hodge manifold M^{2n}_K. The latter emerges as a maximal Kahler submanifold of the 4n-dimensional quaternion Kahler space M^{4n}_Q such that its Swann bundle coincides with M^{4(n+1)}_H. Our approach should be useful for the explicit construction of new quaternion Kahler metrics. The results obtained are also of interest, e.g., in the context of supergravity reduction N=2 --> N=1, or alternatively from the point of view of embedding N=1 matter-coupled supergravity into an N=2 theory.

On superconformal projective hypermultiplets

Building on the five-dimensional constructions in hep-th/0601177, we provide a unified description of four-dimensional N = 2 superconformal off-shell multiplets in projective superspace, including a realization in terms of N = 1 superfields. In particular, superconformal polar multiplets are consistently defined for the first time. We present new 4D N = 2 superconformal sigma-models described by polar multiplets. Such sigma-models realize general superconformal couplings in projective superspace, but involve an infinite tale of auxiliary N = 1 superfields. The auxiliaries should be eliminated by solving infinitely many algebraic nonlinear equations, and this is a nontrivial technical problem. We argue that the latter can be avoided by making use of supersymmetry considerations. All information about the resulting superconformal model (and hence the associated superconformal cone) is encoded in the so-called canonical coordinate system for a Kaehler metric, which was introduced by Bochner and Calabi in the late 1940s.

Chiral formulation for hyperkaehler sigma-models on cotangent bundles of symmetric spaces

Starting with the projective-superspace off-shell formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 supersymmetric sigma-models on cotangent bundles of arbitrary Hermitian symmetric spaces, their on-shell description in terms of N = 1 chiral superfields is developed. In particular, we derive a universal representation for the hyperkaehler potential in terms of the curvature of the symmetric base space. Within the tangent-bundle formulation for such sigma-models, completed recently in arXiv:0709.2633 and realized in terms of N = 1 chiral and complex linear superfields, we give a new universal formula for the superspace Lagrangian. A closed form expression is also derived for the Kaehler potential of an arbitrary Hermitian symmetric space in Kaehler normal coordinates.

On N = 2 supergravity and projective superspace: Dual formulations

The superspace formulation for four-dimensional N = 2 matter-coupled supergravity recently developed in arXiv:0805.4683 makes use of a new type of conformal compensator with infinitely many off-shell degrees of freedom: the so-called covariant weight-one polar hypermultiplet. In the present note we prove the duality of this formulation to the known minimal (40+40) off-shell realization for N = 2 Poincare supergravity involving the improved tensor compensator. Within the latter formulation, we present new off-shell matter couplings realized in terms of covariant weight-zero polar hypermultiplets. We also elaborate upon the projective superspace description of vector multiplets in N = 2 conformal supergravity. An alternative superspace representation for locally supersymmetric chiral actions is given. We present a model for massive improved tensor multiplet with both ``electric'' and ``magnetic'' types. of mass terms.

Field theory in 4D N=2 conformally flat superspace

Building on the superspace formulation for four-dimensional N=2 matter-coupled supergravity developed in arXiv:0805.4683, we elaborate upon a general setting for field theory in N=2 conformally flat superspaces, and concentrate specifically on the case of anti-de Sitter (AdS) superspace. We demonstrate, in particular, that associated with the N=2 AdS supergeometry is a unique vector multiplet such that the corresponding covariantly chiral field strength W_0 is constant, W_0=1. This multiplet proves to be intrinsic in the sense that it encodes all the information about the N=2 AdS supergeometry in a conformally flat frame. Moreover, it emerges as a building block in the construction of various supersymmetric actions. Such a vector multiplet, which can be identified with one of the two compensators of N=2 supergravity, also naturally occurs for arbitrary conformally flat superspaces. An explicit superspace reduction N=2 to N=1 is performed for the action principle in general conformally flat N=2 backgrounds, and examples of such reduction are given.

Conformally flat supergeometry in five dimensions

Using the superspace formulation for the 5D N = 1 Weyl supermultiplet developed in arXiv:0802.3953, we elaborate the concept of conformally flat superspace in five dimensions. For a large family of supersymmetric theories (including sigma-models and Yang-Mills theories) in the conformally flat superspace, we describe an explicit procedure to formulate their dynamics in terms of rigid 4D N = 1 superfields. The case of 5D N = 1 anti-de Sitter superspace is discussed as an example.

Five-dimensional Superfield Supergravity

We present a projective superspace formulation for matter-coupled simple supergravity in five dimensions. Our starting point is the superspace realization for the minimal supergravity multiplet proposed by Howe in 1981. We introduce various off-shell supermultiplets (i.e. hypermultiplets, tensor and vector multiplets) that describe matter fields coupled to supergravity. A projective-invariant action principle is given, and specific dynamical systems are constructed including supersymmetric nonlinear sigma-models. We believe that this approach can be extended to other supergravity theories with eight supercharges in $D\leq 6$ space-time dimensions, including the important case of 4D N=2 supergravity.

5D Supergravity and Projective Superspace

This paper is a companion to our earlier work arXiv:0710.3440 in which the projective superspace formulation for matter-coupled simple supergravity in five dimensions was presented. For the minimal multiplet of 5D N=1 supergravity introduced by Howe in 1981, we give a complete solution of the Bianchi identities. The geometry of curved superspace is shown to allow the existence of a large family of off-shell supermultiplets that can be used to describe supersymmetric matter, including vector multiplets and hypermultiplets. We formulate a manifestly locally supersymmetric action principle. Its natural property turns out to be the invariance under so-called projective transformations of the auxiliary isotwistor variables. We then demonstrate that the projective invariance allows one to uniquely restore the action functional in a Wess-Zumino gauge. The latter action is well-suited for reducing the supergravity-matter systems to components.

On 5D AdS SUSY and Harmonic Superspace

In our recent paper arXiv:0704.1185 [hep-th], we presented the differential geometry of five-dimensional N=1 anti-de Sitter superspace AdS^{5|8}=SU(2,2|1)/SO(4,1) x U(1) and developed the harmonic and the projective superspace settings to formulate off-shell supersymmetric theories in AdS^{5|8}. Here we give a brief review of the geometry and the harmonic superspace construction, and also elaborate on vector supermultiplets.

Polar supermultiplets, Hermitian symmetric spaces and hyperkahler metrics

We address the construction of four-dimensional N=2 supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on tangent bundles of arbitrary Hermitian symmetric spaces starting from projective superspace. Using a systematic way of solving the (infinite number of) auxiliary field equations along with the requirement of supersymmetry, we are able to derive a closed form for the Lagrangian on the tangent bundle and to dualize it to give the hyperkahler potential on the cotangent bundle. As an application, the case of the exceptional symmetric space E_6/SO(10) \times U(1) is explicitly worked out for the first time.

On compactified harmonic/projective superspace, 5D superconformal theories, and all that

Within the supertwistor approach, we analyse the superconformal structure of 4D N = 2 compactified harmonic/projective superspace. In the case of 5D superconformal symmetry, we derive the superconformal Killing vectors and related building blocks which emerge in the transformation laws of primary superfields. Various off-shell superconformal multiplets are presented both in 5D harmonic and projective superspaces, including the so-called tropical (vector) multiplet and polar (hyper)multiplet. Families of superconformal actions are described both in the 5D harmonic and projective superspace settings. We also present examples of 5D superconformal theories with gauged central charge.

Five-dimensional N = 1 AdS superspace: Geometry, off-shell multiplets and dynamics

As a step towards formulating projective superspace techniques for supergravity theories with eight supercharges, this work is devoted to field theory in five-dimensional N = 1 anti-de Sitter superspace AdS^{5|8} = SU(2,2|1)/SO(4,1) x U(1) which is a maximally symmetric curved background. We develop the differential geometry of AdS^{5|8} and describe its isometries in terms of Killing supervectors. Various off-shell supermultiplets in AdS^{5|8} x S^2 are defined, and supersymmetric actions are constructed both in harmonic and projective superspace approaches. Several families of supersymmetric theories are presented including nonlinear sigma-models, Chern-Simons theories and vector-tensor dynamical systems. Using a suitable coset representative, we make use of the coset construction to develop an explicit realization for one half of the superspace AdS^{5|8} as a trivial fiber bundle with fibers isomorophic to four-dimensional Minkowski superspace.

Supersymmetric Euler-Heisenberg effective action: Two-loop results

The two-loop Euler-Heisenberg-type effective action for N = 1 supersymmetric QED is computed within the background field approach. The background vector multiplet is chosen to obey the constraints D_\a W_\b = D_{(\a} W_{\b)} = const, but is otherwise completely arbitrary. Technically, this calculation proves to be much more laborious as compared with that carried out in hep-th/0308136 for N = 2 supersymmetric QED, due to a lesser amount of supersymmetry. Similarly to Ritus' analysis for spinor and scalar QED, the two-loop renormalisation is carried out using proper-time cut-off regularisation. A closed-form expression is obtained for the holomorphic sector of the two-loop effective action, which is singled out by imposing a relaxed super self-duality condition.
