Exponential $f(R)$ cosmology with massive neutrinos as a dynamical dark energy framework

The exponential $f(R)$ gravity model provides a theoretically well-motivated extension of General Relativity, introducing a modified gravitational dynamics at late times consistent with a dynamical dark energy scenario, while recovering the $\Lambda$CDM-like regime at high redshifts with a smooth transition. Using a Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) analysis, we constrain the parameters of the exponential $f(R)$ model in combination with the total neutrino mass $\sum m_\nu$, employing the latest measurements from cosmic chronometers, the DESI DR2 BAO data, the CMB acoustic scale, and the Pantheon+ supernovae compilation, comparing the results with the $\Lambda$CDM and the $w_0w_a$CDM models. Our results show that the exponential $f(R)$ model remains consistent with current observations while slightly alleviating the Hubble tension and the neutrino mass problem relative to $\Lambda$CDM, although the constraints on $\sum m_\nu$ are tighter than those obtained for the phenomenological $w_0w_a$CDM scenario. These results indicate that the interplay between modified gravity and neutrino physics in the late Universe may offer a viable framework for further investigation of cosmological tensions.

Fitting NANOGrav 15-year data and ACT data with modified inflation in entropic cosmology

Recent evidences of stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) through Pulsar Time Array (PTA) observations hint towards an alternative inflationary scenario, compared to the usual inflation, for describing the early stage of the universe in order to be compatible with the PTA data. Moreover, currently the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (combined with the Planck 2018 and BAO) refines the constraint on inflationary observables, compared to the only-Planck 2018 measurements. In the present work, we simultaneously address these two issues by incorporating certain modification during inflation over the usual inflationary scenario. Such modification amplifies the primordial tensor perturbation over the modes that are sensitive to the NANOGrav frequency region. For this purpose, we take the thermodynamic route of cosmology where the entropy of the apparent horizon is given by a generalized form of entropy that is able to generalize the other known form of horizon entropies for suitable representations. The constraints on the model parameters coming from the ACT data also fit the NANOGrav 15-year data (based on numerical analysis), which reveal the model's compatibility with both the ACT and the PTA data.

Linking little rip cosmologies with regular early universes

Cosmological fluids with a Generalized Equation of State (GEoS) are here considered, whose corresponding EoS parameter $ω$ describes a fluid with phantom behavior, namely $ω<-1$, but leading to universes free of singularities at any past or future, finite time. Thus avoiding, in particular, the Big Bang and the Big Rip singularities, the last one considered to be typical in phantom fluid models. More specifically, such GEoS fluid cosmologies lead to regular Little Rip universes. A remarkable new property of these solutions is proven here, namely that they avoid the initial singularity at early times; therefore, they are able to describe emergent universes. Solutions of this kind had been studied previously, but only either as late time or as early time solutions; never as solutions covering both epochs simultaneously. Appropriate conditions are proposed here that relate the Little Rip cosmologies with the initial regular universe, for the future and past regimes, respectively. This is done by taking as starting point the conditions under which a given scale factor corresponds to a Little Rip universe.

Evaporation and anti-evaporation instability of a Schwarzschild-de Sitter braneworld: the case of five-dimensional F(R) gravity

We study the problem of a four-dimensional brane lying in the five-dimensional degenerate Schwarzschild-de Sitter (Nariai) black hole, in five-dimensional $F(R)$-gravity. We show that there cannot exist the brane in the Nariai bulk space except the case that the brane tension vanishes. We demonstrate that the five-dimensional Nariai bulk is unstable in a large region of the parameter space. In particular, the Nariai bulk can have classical (anti-)evaporation instabilities. The bulk instability back-reacts on the four-dimensional brane, in case that the brane tension vanishes, and the unstable modes propagate in their world-volume.

Born-Infeld condensate as a possible origin of neutrino masses and dark energy

We discuss the possibility that a Born-Infeld condensate coupled to neutrinos can generate both neutrino masses and an effective cosmological constant. In particular, an effective field theory is provided capable of dynamically realizing the neutrino superfluid phase firstly suggested by Ginzburg and Zharkov. In such a case, neutrinos acquire a mass gap inside the Born-Infeld ether forming a long-range Cooper pair. Phenomenological implications of the approach are also discussed.

Inflationary universe from higher derivative quantum gravity coupled with scalar electrodynamics

We study inflation for a quantum scalar electrodynamics model in curved space-time and for higher-derivative quantum gravity (QG) coupled with scalar electrodynamics. The corresponding renormalization-group (RG) improved potential is evaluated for both theories in Jordan frame where non-minimal scalar-gravitational coupling sector is explicitly kept. The role of one-loop quantum corrections is investigated by showing how these corrections enter in the expressions for the slow-roll parameters, the spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio and how they influence the bound of the Hubble parameter at the beginning of the primordial acceleration. We demonstrate that the viable inflation maybe successfully realized, so that it turns out to be consistent with last Planck and BICEP2/Keck Array data.

Inflationary universe from higher-derivative quantum gravity

We consider higher-derivative quantum gravity where renormalization group improved effective action beyond one-loop approximation is derived. Using this effective action, the quantum-corrected FRW equations are analyzed. De Sitter universe solution is found. It is demonstrated that such de Sitter inflationary universe is instable. The slow-roll inflationary parameters are calculated. The contribution of renormalization group improved Gauss-Bonnet term to quantum-corrected FRW equations as well as to instability of de Sitter universe is estimated. It is demonstrated that in this case the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio are consistent with Planck data.

Born-Infeld-$f(R)$ gravity

Motivated by the properties of matter quantum fields in curved space-times, we work out a gravity theory that combines the Born-Infeld gravity Lagrangian with an $f(R)$ piece. To avoid ghost-like instabilities, the theory is formulated within the Palatini approach. This construction provides more freedom to address a number of important questions such as the dynamics of the early universe and the cosmic accelerated expansion, among others. In particular, we consider the effect that adding an $f(R)=a R^2$ term has on the early-time cosmology. We find that bouncing solutions are robust against these modifications of the Lagrangian whereas the solutions with {\it loitering} behavior of the original Born-Infeld theory are very sensitive to the $R^2$ term. In fact, these solutions are modified in such a way that a plateau in the $H^2$ function may arise yielding a period of (approximately) de Sitter inflationary expansion. This inflationary behavior may be found even in a radiation dominated universe.

On the LCDM Universe in f(R) gravity

Several different explicit reconstructions of f(R) gravity are obtained from the background FRW expansion history. It is shown that the only theory whose Lagrangian is a simple function of the Ricci scalar R, that admits an exact LCDM expansion history is standard General Relativity with a positive cosmological constant and the only way to obtain this behaviour of the scale factor for more general functions of R is to add additional degrees of freedom to the matter sector.

PPN limit and cosmological gravitational waves as tools to constrain f(R)-gravity

We discuss the PPN Solar-System constraints and the GW stochastic background considering some recently proposed $f(R)$ gravity models which satisfy both cosmological and stability conditions. Using the definition of PPN-parameters $γ$ and $β$ in terms of $f(R)$-models and the definition of scalar GWs, we compare and discuss if it is possible to search for parameter ranges of $f(R)$-models working at Solar System and GW stochastic background scale.

Conformal Transformations in Cosmology of Modified Gravity: the Covariant Approach Perspective

The 1+3 covariant approach and the covariant gauge-invariant approach to perturbations are used to analyze in depth conformal transformations in cosmology. Such techniques allow us to obtain very interesting insights on the physical content of these transformations, when applied to non-standard gravity. The results obtained lead to a number of general conclusions on the change of some key quantities describing any two conformally related cosmological models. In particular, it is shown that the physics in the Einstein frame has characteristics which are completely different from those in the Jordan frame. Even if some of the geometrical properties of the cosmology are preserved (homogeneous and isotropic Universes are mapped into homogeneous and isotropic universes), it can happen that decelerating cosmologies are mapped into accelerated ones. Differences become even more pronounced when first-order perturbations are considered: from the 1+3 equations it is seen that first-order vector and tensor perturbations are left unchanged in their structure by the conformal transformation, but this cannot be said of the scalar perturbations, which include the matter density fluctuations. Behavior in the two frames of the growth rate, as well as other evolutionary features, like the presence or absence of oscillations, etc., appear to be different too. The results obtained are then explicitly interpreted and verified with the help of some clarifying examples based on $f(R)$-gravity cosmologies.

Effective Lagrangian and the back-reaction problem in a self-interacting $O(N)$ scalar theory in curved spacetime

A derivation of the one-loop effective Lagrangian in the self-interacting $O(N)$ scalar theory, in slowly varying gravitational fields, is presented (using $ζ$-regularization and heat-kernel techniques). The result is given in terms of the expansion in powers of the curvature tensors (up to quadratic terms) and their derivatives, as well as in derivatives of the background scalar field (up to second derivatives). The renormalization group improved effective Lagrangian is studied, what gives the leading-log approach of the whole perturbation theory. An analysis of the effective equations (back-reaction problem) on the static hyperbolic spacetime $\reals^2 \times H^2/Γ$ is carried out for the simplest version of the theory: $m^2=0$ and $N=1$. The existence of the solution $\reals^2 \times H^2/Γ$, induced by purely quantum effects, is shown.

One-loop effective potential in 2D dilaton gravity on hyperbolic plane

The one-loop effective potential in $2D$ dilaton gravity in conformal gauge on the topologically non-trivial plane $\reals \times S^1$ and on the hyperbolic plane $H^2/Γ$ is calculated. For arbitrary choice of the tree scalar potential it is shown, that the one-loop effective potential explicitly depends on the reference metric (through the dependence on the radius of the torus or the radius of $H^2/Γ$). This phenomenon is absent only for some special choice of the tree scalar potential corresponding to the Liouville potential and leading to one-loop ultraviolet finite theory. The effective equations are discussed and some interpretation of the reference metric dependence of the effective potential is made.

Self-interacting scalar fields on spacetime with compact hyperbolic spatial part

We calculate the one-loop effective potential of a self-interacting scalar field on the spacetime of the form $\reals^2\times H^2/Γ$. The Selberg trace formula associated with a co-compact discrete group $Γ$ in $PSL(2,\reals )$ (hyperbolic and elliptic elements only) is used. The closed form for the one-loop unrenormalized and renormalized effective potentials is given. The influence of non-trivial topology on curvature induced phase transitions is also discussed.
