The intersection of subgroups in free groups and linear programming

We study the intersection of finitely generated subgroups of free groups by utilizing the method of linear programming. We prove that if $H_1$ is a finitely generated subgroup of a free group $F$, then the WN-coefficient $σ(H_1)$ of $H_1$ is rational and can be computed in deterministic exponential time in the size of $H_1$. This coefficient $σ(H_1)$ is the minimal nonnegative real number such that, for every finitely generated subgroup $H_2$ of $F$, it is true that $\bar {\rm r}(H_1, H_2) \le σ(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_2)$, where $\bar{ {\rm r}} (H) := \max ( {\rm r} (H)-1,0)$ is the reduced rank of $H$, ${\rm r} (H)$ is the rank of $H$, and $\bar {\rm r}(H_1, H_2)$ is the reduced rank of the generalized intersection of $H_1$ and $H_2$. We also show the existence of a subgroup $H_2^* = H_2^*(H_1)$ of $F$ such that $\bar {\rm r}(H_1, H_2^*) = σ(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_2^*)$, the Stallings graph $Γ(H_2^*)$ of $H_2^*$ has at most doubly exponential size in the size of $H_1$ and $Γ(H_2^*)$ can be constructed in exponential time in the size of $H_1$.

The bounded and precise word problems for presentations of groups

We introduce and study the bounded word problem and the precise word problem for groups given by means of generators and defining relations. For example, for every finitely presented group, the bounded word problem is in NP, i.e., it can be solved in nondeterministic polynomial time, and the precise word problem is in PSPACE. The main technical result of the paper states that, for certain finite presentations of groups, which include the Baumslag-Solitar one-relator groups and free products of cyclic groups, the bounded word problem and the precise word problem can be solved in polylogarithmic space. As consequences of developed techniques that can be described as calculus of brackets, we obtain polylogarithmic space bounds for the computational complexity of the diagram problem for free groups, for the width problem for elements of free groups, and for computation of the area defined by polygonal singular closed curves in the plane. We also obtain polynomial time bounds for these problems.

Linear programming and the intersection of free subgroups in free products of groups

We study the intersection of finitely generated factor-free subgroups of free products of groups by utilizing the method of linear programming. For example, we prove that if $H_1$ is a finitely generated factor-free noncyclic subgroup of the free product $G_1 * G_2$ of two finite groups $G_1$, $G_2$, then the WN-coefficient $σ(H_1)$ of $H_1$ is rational and can be computed in exponential time in the size of $H_1$. This coefficient $σ(H_1)$ is the minimal positive real number such that, for every finitely generated factor-free subgroup $H_2$ of $G_1 * G_2$, it is true that $\bar {\rm r} (H_1, H_2) \le σ(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_2)$, where $\bar{ {\rm r}} (H) = \max ( {\rm r} (H)-1,0)$ is the reduced rank of $H$, ${\rm r}(H)$ is the rank of $H$, and $\bar {\rm r}(H_1, H_2)$ is the reduced rank of the generalized intersection of $H_1$ and $H_2$. In the case of the free product $G_1 * G_2$ of two finite groups $G_1$, $G_2$, it is also proved that there exists a factor-free subgroup $H_2^* = H_2^*(H_1)$ such that $\bar {\rm r}(H_1, H_2^*) = σ(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_1) \bar {\rm r}(H_2^*)$, $H_2^*$ has at most doubly exponential size in the size of $H_1$, and $H_2^*$ can be constructed in exponential time in the size of $H_1$.

On rank of the join of two subgroups in a free group

Let $H, K$ be two finitely generated subgroups of a free group, let $\langle H, K \rangle$ denote the subgroup generated by $H, K$, called the join of $H, K$, and let neither of $H$, $K$ have finite index in $\langle H, K \rangle$. We prove the existence of an epimorphism $ζ: \langle H, K \rangle \to F_2$, where $F_2$ is a free group of rank 2, such that the restriction of $ζ$ on both $H$ and $K$ is injective and the restriction $ζ_0 : H \cap K \to ζ(H) \cap ζ(K) $ of $ζ$ on $H \cap K $ to $ζ(H) \cap ζ(K)$ is surjective. This is obtained as a corollary of an analogous result on rank of the generalized join of two finitely generated subgroups in a free group.

Embedding of groups and quadratic equations over groups

We prove that, for every integer $n \ge 2$, a finite or infinite countable group $G$ can be embedded into a 2-generated group $H$ in such a way that the solvability of quadratic equations of length at most $n$ is preserved, i.e., every quadratic equation over $G$ of length at most $n$ has a solution in $G$ if and only if this equation, considered as an equation over $H$, has a solution in $H$.

On conjectures of Andrews and Curtis

It is shown that the original Andrews--Curtis conjecture on balanced presentations of the trivial group is equivalent to its "cyclic" version in which, in place of arbitrary conjugations, one can use only cyclic permutations. This, in particular, proves a satellite conjecture of Andrews and Curtis made in 1966. We also consider a more restrictive "cancellative" version of the cyclic Andrews--Curtis conjecture with and without stabilizations and show that the restriction does not change the Andrews--Curtis conjecture when stabilizations are allowed. On the other hand, the restriction makes the conjecture false when stabilizations are not allowed.

Boundary case of equality in optimal Loewner-type inequalities

We prove certain optimal systolic inequalities for a closed Riemannian manifold (X,g), depending on a pair of parameters, n and b. Here n is the dimension of X, while b is its first Betti number. The proof of the inequalities involves constructing Abel-Jacobi maps from X to its Jacobi torus T^b, which are area-decreasing (on b-dimensional areas), with respect to suitable norms. These norms are the stable norm of g, the conformally invariant norm, as well as other L^p-norms. The case of equality is characterized in terms of the criticality of the lattice of deck transformations of T^b, while the Abel-Jacobi map is a harmonic Riemannian submersion. That the resulting inequalities are actually nonvacuous follows from an isoperimetric inequality of Federer and Fleming, in the assumption of the nonvanishing of the homology class of the lift of the typical fiber of the Abel-Jacobi map to the maximal free abelian cover.

Filling area conjecture and ovalless real hyperelliptic surfaces

We prove the filling area conjecture in the hyperelliptic case. In particular, we establish the conjecture for all genus 1 fillings of the circle, extending P. Pu's result in genus 0. We translate the problem into a question about closed ovalless real surfaces. The conjecture then results from a combination of two ingredients. On the one hand, we exploit integral geometric comparison with orbifold metrics of constant positive curvature on real surfaces of even positive genus. Here the singular points are Weierstrass points. On the other hand, we exploit an analysis of the combinatorics on unions of closed curves, arising as geodesics of such orbifold metrics.

Generalized degree and optimal Loewner-type inequalities

We generalize optimal inequalities of C. Loewner and M. Gromov, by proving lower bounds for the total volume in terms of the homotopy systole and the stable systole. Our main tool is the construction of an area-decreasing map to the Jacobi torus, streamlining and generalizing the construction of the first author in collaboration with D. Burago. It turns out that one can successfully combine this construction with the coarea formula, to yield new optimal inequalities.
