Relativistic coupled-cluster single-double method applied to alkali-metal atoms

A relativistic version of the coupled-cluster single-double (CCSD) method is developed for atoms with a single valence electron. In earlier work, a linearized version of the CCSD method (with extensions to include a dominant class of triple excitations) led to accurate predictions for energies, transition amplitudes, hyperfine constants, and other properties of monovalent atoms. Further progress in high-precision atomic structure calculations for heavy atoms calls for improvement of the linearized coupled-cluster methodology. In the present work, equations for the single and double excitation coefficients of the Dirac-Fock wave function, including all non-linear coupled-cluster terms that contribute at the single-double level are worked out. Contributions of the non-linear terms to energies, electric-dipole matrix elements, and hyperfine constants of low-lying states in alkali-metal atoms from Li to Cs are evaluated and the results are compared with other calculations and with precise experiments.

Theoretical overview of atomic parity violation. Recent developments and challenges

Recent advances in interpreting the most accurate to-date measurement of atomic parity violation in Cs are reviewed. The inferred nuclear weak charge, Q_W = - 72.65(28)_expt (36)_theor, agrees with the prediction of the standard model at 1 sigma level. Further improved interpretation is limited by an accuracy of solving basic correlation problem of atomic structure. We report on our progress in solving this problem within the relativistic coupled-cluster formalism. We include single-, double- and triple- electronic excitations in the coupled-cluster expansion. Numerical results for energies, electric-dipole matrix elements, and hyperfine-structure constants of Cs are presented.

Multipolar theory of black-body radiation shift of atomic energy levels and its implications for optical lattice clocks

A black-body radiation (BBR) shifts of (nsnp ^3P_0) - (ns^2 ^1S_0) clock transition in divalent atoms Mg, Ca, Sr, and Yb are evaluated. A theory of multipolar BBR shifts is developed and its implications are discussed. At room temperatures, the resulting uncertainties in the BBR shifts are relatively large and substantially affect the projected 10^{-18} fractional accuracy of the optical-lattice-based clocks.

Including of triple excitations in the relativistic coupled-cluster formalism and calculation of Na properties

A practical high-accuracy relativistic method of atomic structure calculations for univalent atoms is presented. The method is rooted in the coupled-cluster formalism and includes non-perturbative treatment of single and double excitations from the core and single, double and triple excitations involving valence electron. Triple excitations of core electrons are included in the fourth-order of many-body perturbation theory. In addition, contributions from the disconnected excitations are incorporated. Evaluation of matrix elements includes all-order dressing of lines and vertices of the diagrams. The resulting formalism for matrix elements is complete through the fourth order and sums certain chains of diagrams to all orders. With the developed method we compute removal energies, magnetic-dipole hyperfine-structure constants A and electric-dipole amplitudes. We find that the removal energies are reproduced within 0.01-0.03% and the hyperfine constants of the 3s_1/2 and 3p_1/2 states with a better than 0.1% accuracy. The computed dipole amplitudes for the principal 3s_1/2 - 3p_1/2;3/2 transitions are in an agreement with 0.05%-accurate experimental data.

Marked influence of the nature of chemical bond on CP-violating signature in molecular ions $\mathrm{HBr}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{HI}^{+}$

Heavy polar molecules offer a great sensitivity to the electron Electric Dipole Moment(EDM). To guide emerging searches for EDMs with molecular ions, we estimate the EDM-induced energy corrections for hydrogen halide ions $\mathrm{HBr}^{+}$ and $\mathrm{HI}^{+}$ in their respective ground $X ^2Π_{3/2}$ states. We find that the energy corrections due to EDM for the two ions differ by an unexpectedly large factor of fifteen. We demonstrate that a major part of this enhancement is due to a dissimilarity in the nature of the chemical bond for the two ions: the bond that is nearly of ionic character in $\mathrm{HBr}^{+}$ exhibits predominantly covalent nature in $\mathrm{HI}^{+}$. We conclude that because of this enhancement the HI$^+$ ion may be a potentially competitive candidate for the EDM search.

Ultracold collision properties of metastable alkaline-earth atoms

Ultra-cold collisions of spin-polarized 24Mg,40Ca, and 88Sr in the metastable 3P2 excited state are investigated. We calculate the long-range interaction potentials and estimate the scattering length and the collisional loss rate as a function of magnetic field. The estimates are based on molecular potentials between 3P2 alkaline-earth atoms obtained from ab initio atomic and molecular structure calculations. The scattering lengths show resonance behavior due to the appearance of a molecular bound state in a purely long-range interaction potential and are positive for magnetic fields below 50 mT. A loss-rate model shows that losses should be smallest near zero magnetic field and for fields slightly larger than the resonance field, where the scattering length is also positive.
