Transcendence degree of zero-cycles and the structure of Chow motives

We show how the notion of the transcendence degree of a zero-cycle on a smooth projective variety X is related to the structure of the motive M(X). This can be of particular interest in the context of Bloch's conjecture, especially for Godeaux surfaces, when the surface is given as a finite quotient of a suitable quintic in P^3.

Notes on the biextension of Chow groups

The paper discusses four approaches to the biextension of Chow groups and their equivalences. These are the following: an explicit construction given by S.Bloch, a construction in terms of the Poincare biextension of dual intermediate Jacobians, a construction in terms of K-cohomology, and a construction in terms of determinant of cohomology of coherent sheaves. A new approach to J.Franke's Chow categories is given. An explicit formula for the Weil pairing of algebraic cycles is obtained.

Adelic resolution for homology sheaves

A generalization of the usual ideles group is proposed, namely, we construct certain adelic complexes for sheaves of $K$-groups on schemes. More generally, such complexes are defined for any abelian sheaf on a scheme. We focus on the case when the sheaf is associated to the presheaf of a homology theory with certain natural axioms, satisfied by $K$-theory. In this case it is proven that the adelic complex provides a flasque resolution for the above sheaf and that the natural morphism to the Gersten complex is a quasiisomorphism. The main advantage of the new adelic resolution is that it is contravariant and multiplicative in contrast to the Gersten resolution. In particular, this allows to reprove that the intersection in Chow groups coincides up to sign with the natural product in the corresponding $K$-cohomology groups. Also, we show that the Weil pairing can be expressed as a Massey triple product in $K$-cohomology groups with certain indices.

Poincare biextension and ideles on the algebraic curve

Arbarello, de Concini, and Kac have constructed a central extension of the ideles group on a smooth projective algebraic curve. We show a relation of this central extension with the theta-bundle and the Poincare biextension of the Jacobian of the curve. As an application we get a new proof of the adelic formula for the Weil pairing.

Picard group of moduli of hyperelliptic curves

The main subject of this work is the difference between the coarse moduli space and the stack of hyperelliptic curves. We compute their Picard groups, giving explicit description of the generators. We get an application to the (non-)existence of a tautological family over the coarse moduli space.

Families of n-gonal curves with maximal variation of moduli

We study families of n-gonal curves with maximal variation of moduli, which have a rational section. Certain numerical results on the degree of the modular map are obtained for such families of hyperelliptic and trigonal curves. In the last case we use the description of the relative Picard group of the universal family of trigonal curves.

Families of hyperelliptic curves

The main subject is the difference between the coarse moduli space and the stack of hyperelliptic curves. In particular, we compute their Picard groups, giving explicit description of the generators. We also study how many families of hyperelliptic curves may have the same modular map as well as the existence of the tautological family over the coarse moduli space of hyperelliptic curves.

Adelic Lefschetz formula for the action of a one-dimensional torus

There exists a well-known Lefschetz formula for the number of fixed points in algebraic topology. In algebraic geometry, there exist cohomologies of coherent sheaves. It is natural to consider the same alternated sum of traces as in Lefschetz formula for cohomologies of sheaves. In the present paper, we consider the case of the action of a one-dimensional torus on a smooth projectve variety. Using theory of adelic complexes it becomes possible to rewrite coherent Lefschetz formula in a new compact form and then to prove it.
