Nonlocal response in thin-film waveguides: loss versus nonlocality and breaking of complementarity

We investigate the effects of nonlocal response on the surface-plasmon polariton guiding properties of the metal-insulator (MI), metal-insulator-metal (MIM), and insulator-metal-insulator (IMI) waveguides. The nonlocal effects are described by a linearized hydrodynamic model, which includes the Thomas-Fermi internal kinetic energy of the free electrons in the metal. We derive the nonlocal dispersion relations of the three waveguide structures taking into account also retardation and interband effects, and examine the delicate interplay between nonlocal response and absorption losses in the metal. We also show that nonlocality breaks the complementarity of the MIM and IMI waveguides found in the non-retarded limit.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS): nonlocal limitations

Giant field enhancement and field singularities are a natural consequence of the commonly employed local-response framework. We show that a more general nonlocal treatment of the plasmonic response leads to new and possibly fundamental limitations on field enhancement with important consequences for our understanding of SERS. The intrinsic length scale of the electron gas serves to smear out assumed field singularities, leaving the SERS enhancement factor finite even for geometries with infinitely sharp features. For silver nano-groove structures, mimicked by periodic arrays of half-cylinders (up to 120 nm in radius), we find no enhancement factors exceeding ten orders of magnitude (10^10).

Rapid, Impartial and Comprehensive (RIC) publishing: A new concept for scientific journals

Publishing scientific journals governed by editors relying on anonymous peer reviewing is slow (even one round of reviewing involves several communications between authors, editor and reviewers), partial (arguments of authors can hardly overrule those of reviewers) and not using all available scientific material (even the most thorough and insightful reviews remain for the eyes of authors and editors only). Here I propose a new concept for scientific journals that ensures rapid, impartial and comprehensive (RIC) publishing. RIC concept is based on implementation of two novel publishing principles: the first (rapid) editorial screening of a submitted manuscript should result in its either "rejection" or "acceptance with optional revisions", and, in the latter case, the optionally revised (taking into account open reviews) paper should be published along with all (positive and negative) reviews, presenting thereby to the scientific community all available scientific material on the topic in question.

Effective Constitutive Parameters of Plasmonic Metamaterials: A Direct Approach

We introduce a general implementation of the recently proposed homogenization theory [Tsukerman, J. Opt. Soc. Am. B 28, 577 (2011)] allowing one to retrieve all 36 linear constitutive parameters of any 3D metamaterial with parallelepipedal unit cells. The effective parameters are defined directly as linear relations between pairs of coarse-grained fields, in contrast with methods where these parameters are obtained from reflection/transmission data or other indirect considerations. The method is applied to plasmonic metamaterials with spherical gold particles and split-ring resonators (SRR), respectively. In both cases, the expected physical behavior is reproduced almost perfectly, with no unphysical artifacts.

Channel plasmon-polaritons: modal shape, dispersion, and losses

We theoretically study channel plasmon-polaritons (CPPs) with a geometry similar to that in recent experiments at telecom wavelengths (Bozhevolnyi et al., Nature 440, 508 (2006)). The CPP modal shape, dispersion relation, and losses are simulated using the multiple multipole method and the finite difference time domain technique. It is shown that, with the increase of the wavelength, the fundamental CPP mode shifts progressively towards the groove opening, ceasing to be guided at the groove bottom and becoming hybridized with wedge plasmon-polaritons running along the groove edges.

Vectorial modeling of near-field imaging with uncoated fiber probes: Transfer function and resolving power

Using exact three-dimensional vectorial simulations of radiation coupling into uncoated dielectric fiber probes, we calculate amplitude transfer functions for conical single-mode fiber tips at the light wavelength of 633 nm. The coupling efficiency of glass fiber tips is determined in a wide range of spatial frequencies of the incident radiation for opening angles varying from 30 to 120 degrees. The resolution in near-field imaging with these tips is considered for field distributions limited in both direct and spatial-frequency space. The characteristics of the transfer functions describing the relation between probed optical fields and near-field images are analyzed in detail. The importance of utilizing a perfectly sharp tip is also examined.
