Control of surface states of planar metamaterial based on moire effect

The possibility of continuous tuning of the spectral properties of two types of planar metamaterials based on the moire effect by changing their geometric parameters is demonstrated both experimentally and numerically. It is shown that for a one-dimensional moire metamaterial obtained by superposition of two microstrip photonic crystals with close periods, the position of the stop band in the spectrum can be controlled by changing these periods. For the two-dimensional moire metamaterial formed by two identical periodic crossed structures with hexagonal symmetry, the ability to control the frequency of the surface state mode by changing the crossing angle of these structures relative to each other has been experimentally and numerically shown. It is numerically demonstrated that if the moire metamaterial is irradiated by the horn antenna, a surface wave propagating in the metamaterial plane appears in all directions beginning from its intersection point with the axis of the incident wave beam. From the application point of view, moire metamaterials of this type can be considered as promising prototype of microwave filters, whose spectral properties can be continuously and smoothly mechanically rearranged.

Resonant Response in Mechanically Tunable Metasurface based on Crossed Metallic Gratings with Controllable Crossing Angle

We report on a new class of mechanically tunable planar metamaterials comprising resonating units formed by crossed metallic strip gratings. We observe a resonant response in transmission spectra of a linearly polarized wave passing through the system of crossed gratings. Each grating consists of an array of parallel metallic strips located on the top of a dielectric substrate. It is revealed that the resonant position appears to be dependent on the angle of gratings crossing. It is found out both theoretically and experimentally that the resonant shift on the frequency scale appears as a result of increasing in the length of the resonating portion of the parallelogram periodic cell formed by the crossed metallic strips with decreasing crossing angle and the proposed design can be used in new types of planar metamaterials and filters.

Resonant features of planar Faraday metamaterial with high structural symmetry

The transmission of electromagnetic wave through the planar chiral structure, loaded with the gyrotropic medium on the longitudinal magnetic field is studied. The frequency dependence of the metamaterial resonance and the angle of rotation of the polarization plane are obtained. We define both theoretically and experimentally the range of frequencies and magnetic fields, where the angle of polarization plane rotation for the metamaterial is essentially higher than for a single ferrite slab.
