A plausible (overlooked) super-luminous supernova in the SDSS Stripe 82 data

We present the discovery of a plausible super-luminous supernova (SLSN), found in the archival data of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82, called PSN 000123+000504. The supernova peaked at M_g<-21.3 mag in the second half of September 2005, but was missed by the real-time supernova hunt. The observed part of the light curve (17 epochs) showed that the rise to the maximum took over 30 days, while the decline time lasted at least 70 days (observed frame), closely resembling other SLSNe of SN2007bi type. Spectrum of the host galaxy reveals a redshift of z=0.281 and the distance modulus of μ=40.77 mag. Combining this information with the SDSS photometry, we found the host galaxy to be an LMC-like irregular dwarf galaxy with the absolute magnitude of M_B=-18.2+/-0.2 mag and the oxygen abundance of 12+log[O/H]=8.3+/-0.2. Our SLSN follows the relation for the most energetic/super-luminous SNe exploding in low-metallicity environments, but we found no clear evidence for SLSNe to explode in low-luminosity (dwarf) galaxies only. The available information on the PSN 000123+000504 light curve suggests the magnetar-powered model as a likely scenario of this event. This SLSN is a new addition to a quickly growing family of super-luminous SNe.

Photometric Science Alerts from Gaia

Gaia is the cornerstone mission of the European Space Agency. From late 2013 it will start collecting superb astrometric, photometric and spectroscopic data for around a billion of stars of our Galaxy. While surveying the whole sky down to V=20mag Gaia will be detecting transients and anomalous behaviour of objects, providing near-real-time alerts to the entire astronomical community. Gaia should detected about 6000 supernovae, 1000 microlensing events and many other interesting types of transients. Thanks to its on-board low-dispersion spectrograph the classification of transients will be robust, assuring low false-alert rate. We describe the operation of the Photometric Science Alerts system, outline the scientific possibilities and conclude with an invitation to collaborate in the ground-based follow-up Gaia alerts during the early months of the mission when the outcome of the alerting pipeline needs to be verified.

4MOST - 4-metre Multi-Object Spectroscopic Telescope

The 4MOST consortium is currently halfway through a Conceptual Design study for ESO with the aim to develop a wide-field (>3 square degree, goal >5 square degree), high-multiplex (>1500 fibres, goal 3000 fibres) spectroscopic survey facility for an ESO 4m-class telescope (VISTA). 4MOST will run permanently on the telescope to perform a 5 year public survey yielding more than 20 million spectra at resolution R~5000 (λ=390-1000 nm) and more than 2 million spectra at R~20,000 (395-456.5 nm & 587-673 nm). The 4MOST design is especially intended to complement three key all-sky, space-based observatories of prime European interest: Gaia, eROSITA and Euclid. Initial design and performance estimates for the wide-field corrector concepts are presented. We consider two fibre positioner concepts, a well-known Phi-Theta system and a new R-Theta concept with a large patrol area. The spectrographs are fixed configuration two-arm spectrographs, with dedicated spectrographs for the high- and low-resolution. A full facility simulator is being developed to guide trade-off decisions regarding the optimal field-of-view, number of fibres needed, and the relative fraction of high-to-low resolution fibres. Mock catalogues with template spectra from seven Design Reference Surveys are simulated to verify the science requirements of 4MOST. The 4MOST consortium aims to deliver the full 4MOST facility by the end of 2018 and start delivering high-level data products for both consortium and ESO community targets a year later with yearly increments.

Outer density profiles of 19 Galactic globular clusters from deep and wide-field imaging

Using deep photometric data from WFC@INT and WFI@ESO2.2m we measure the outer number density profiles of 19 stellar clusters located in the inner region of the Milky Way halo (within a Galactocentric distance range of 10-30 kpc) in order to assess the impact of internal and external dynamical processes on the spatial distribution of stars. Adopting power-law fitting templates, with index $-γ$ in the outer region, we find that the clusters in our sample can be divided in two groups: a group of massive clusters ($ \ge 10^5 $ M_sun) that has relatively flat profiles with $2.5 < γ< 4$ and a group of low-mass clusters ($ \le 10^5 $ M_sun), with steep profiles ($γ> 4$) and clear signatures of interaction with the Galactic tidal field. We refer to these two groups as 'tidally unaffected' and 'tidally affected', respectively. Our results also show a clear trend between the slope of the outer parts and the half-mass density of these systems, which suggests that the outer density profiles may retain key information on the dominant processes driving the dynamical evolution of Globular Clusters.

CASSOWARY 20: a Wide Separation Einstein Cross Identified with the X-shooter Spectrograph

We have used spectra obtained with X-shooter, the triple arm optical-infrared spectrograph recently commissioned on the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory, to confirm the gravitational lens nature of the CASSOWARY candidate CSWA 20. This system consists of a luminous red galaxy at redshift z(abs) = 0.741, with a very high velocity dispersion sigma(lens) = 500 km/s, which lenses a blue star-forming galaxy at z(em) = 1.433 into four images with mean separation of about 6 arcseconds. The source shares many of its properties with those of UV-selected galaxies z = 2-3: it is forming stars at a rate of 25 solar masses per year, has a metallicity of about 1/4 solar, and shows nebular emission from two components separated by 0.4 arcseconds in the image plane, possibly indicating a merger. It appears that foreground interstellar material within the galaxy has been evacuated from the sight-line along which we observe the starburst, giving an unextinguished view of its stars and H II regions. CSWA 20, with its massive lensing galaxy producing a high magnification of an intrinsically luminous background galaxy, is a promising target for future studies at a variety of wavelengths.

Automated search for star clusters in large multiband surveys: II. Discovery and investigation of open clusters in the Galactic plane

Automated search for star clusters in J,H,K_s data from 2MASS catalog has been performed using the method developed by Koposov et. al (2008). We have found and verified 153 new clusters in the interval of the galactic latitude -24 < b < 24 degrees. Color excesses E(B-V), distance moduli and ages were determined for 130 new and 14 yet-unstudied known clusters. In this paper, we publish a catalog of coordinates, diameters, and main parameters of all the clusters under study. A special web-site available at http://ocl.sai.msu.ru has been developed to facilitate dissemination and scientific usage of the results.

Search for New Open Clusters in Huge Catalogues

Current catalogues of open clusters are rather heterogeneous and incomplete lists of clusters than true catalogues. Before there has been no attempts of automatic search for open clusters in huge photometric catalogues using homogeneous all-sky approach. We have developed such a method based on extraction from catalogue and successive analysis of stellar densities using the colour-magnitude diagrams. Our algorithm finds density peaks and then verifies the significance of these peaks exploiting the fact that in real clusters only stars lying on the isochrone must show density peaks, in contrast with stars lying far from the isochrone on the CMD. In addition such procedure allows to determine the physical parameters: age, distance and color excess of open clusters. Preliminary study of 150 sq. degrees in Galaxy anticenter region yielded several dozens of new clusters. The software developed will allow to build first homogeneous all-sky open cluster catalogue (it will include essentially refined data for known clusters as well) based on 2MASS data.

Dry Mergers in GEMS: The Dynamical Evolution of Massive Early-Type Galaxies

We have used the 28'x 28' HST image mosaic from the GEMS (Galaxy Evolution from Morphology and SEDs) survey in conjunction with the COMBO-17 photometric redshift survey to constrain the incidence of major mergers between spheroid-dominated galaxies with little cold gas (dry mergers) since z = 0.7. A set of N-body merger simulations was used to explore the morphological signatures of such interactions: they are recognizable either as < 5kpc separation close pairs or because of broad, low surface brightness tidal features and asymmetries. Data with the depth and resolution of GEMS are sensitive to dry mergers between galaxies with M_V < -20.5 for z < 0.7; dry mergers at higher redshifts are not easily recovered in single-orbit HST imaging. Six dry mergers (12 galaxies) with luminosity ratios between 1:1 and 4:1 were found from a sample of 379 red early-type galaxies with M_V < -20.5 and 0.1 < z < 0.7. The simulations suggest that the morphological signatures of dry merging are visible for ~250Myr and we use this timescale to convert the observed merger incidence into a rate. On this basis we find that present day spheroidal galaxies with M_V < -20.5 on average have undergone between 0.5 and 2 major dry mergers since z ~ 0.7. We have compared this result with the predictions of a Cold Dark Matter based semi-analytic galaxy formation model. The model reproduces the observed declining major merger fraction of bright galaxies and the space density of luminous early-type galaxies reasonably well. The predicted dry merger fraction is consistent with our observational result. Hence, hierarchical models predict and observations now show that major dry mergers are an important driver of the evolution of massive early-type galaxies in recent epochs.
