Learning Hidden Structures in Open Quantum Dynamics

We introduce a machine-learning approach for identifying hidden structural features of open quantum dynamics under restricted experimental access. Unlike most existing data-driven methods which focus on detection or prediction of dynamical behavior, our framework targets the inference of invariant algebraic structures underlying the effective Markovian evolution. Measurement limitations, symmetries, and superselection rules are incorporated through a *-algebraic description of accessible observables. The learning problem is formulated as maximum-likelihood estimation from multi-time measurement sequences, where the algebraic type of an invariant subalgebra, particularly a decoherence-free subalgebra, is treated as a discrete structural hypothesis. The feasibility of the approach is illustrated on multiple synthetic models and a waveguide quantum electrodynamics system, where nontrivial intermediate algebraic structures are identified directly from measurement data.

Modelling optimal implementation of an arbitrary $N$-qubit quantum gate within the generalized Bloch vectors formalism

The optimal implementation of quantum gates for closed $N$-qubit systems is one of the key challenges for practical realization of many quantum information processing tasks. In the present article, based on the generalized Bloch vectors formalism [\emph{J. Phys. A: Math. Theor.} 54, 195301 (2021)] for a finite-dimensional quantum system, we develop a new general model for the optimal quantum gates implementation, which is formulated in terms of the Bloch vectors for the unitary evolution operator and the system Hamiltonians, drift and control, and has the unified form applicable for the implementation of an arbitrary $N$-qubit gate within any closed $N$-qubit system satisfying the controllability conditions. Within the developed optimal model, the cost functional has both the terminal part and also, the integral part with the special scaling, and this allows us to specify the quantum optimal control synthesis via solving the two-point boundary value problem (BVP) for the system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), which can be explored numerically by any of the known BVP solvers for ODEs. The numerical experiments, conducted for the implementation within the developed optimal model of a variety of $N=1,2,3$ qubit gates, demonstrate the high accuracy of the model-based results.

Investigating the Role of Bilateral Symmetry for Inpainting Brain MRI

Inpainting has recently emerged as a valuable and interesting technology to employ in the analysis of medical imaging data, in particular brain MRI. A wide variety of methodologies for inpainting MRI have been proposed and demonstrated on tasks including anomaly detection. In this work we investigate the statistical relationship between inpainted brain structures and the amount of subject-specific conditioning information, i.e. the other areas of the image that are masked. In particular, we analyse the distribution of inpainting results when masking additional regions of the image, specifically the contra-lateral structure. This allows us to elucidate where in the brain the model is drawing information from, and in particular, what is the importance of hemispherical symmetry? Our experiments interrogate a diffusion inpainting model through analysing the inpainting of subcortical brain structures based on intensity and estimated area change. We demonstrate that some structures show a strong influence of symmetry in the conditioning of the inpainting process.

Black hole mass estimate in OJ 287 based on the bulk-motion comptonization model

The multi-wavelength outburst activity in the BL Lacertae source OJ 287 has sparked a lot of controversy about whether the source contains one or two black holes (BHs) and what characteristics of this black hole binary would be. In this article we present the results of analysis of the X-ray flaring activity of OJ 287 using the data of Swift/XRT observations. We discovered that the energy spectra in all spectral states can be adequately fit with the XSPEC BMC model (the Comptonization one). As a result we found that the X-ray photon index of the BMC model, $\Gamma$ correlates with the mass accretion rate, $\dot M$. We found the photon index $\Gamma$ to increase monotonically with accretion rate $\dot M$ from $\Gamma\sim 2$ in the intermediate state (IS) to $\Gamma\sim2.5$ the high/soft state (HSS) with subsequent saturation at $\Gamma\sim$ 2.6 level at higher luminosities. This type of behavior of the spectral index is remarkably similar to the pattern observed in a number of established stellar-mass black hole candidates. Assuming the universality of the observed pattern of the correlation between the photon index and mass accretion rate, we estimate the BH mass in OJ 287 to be around $2\times10^8$ solar masses, using the well studied BH binaries GX 339-4 and XTE J1859-226 to calibrate the model.

The SPARC Toroidal Field Model Coil Program

The SPARC Toroidal Field Model Coil (TFMC) Program was a three-year effort between 2018 and 2021 that developed novel Rare Earth Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (REBCO) superconductor technologies and then successfully utilized these technologies to design, build, and test a first-in-class, high-field (~20 T), representative-scale (~3 m) superconducting toroidal field coil. With the principal objective of demonstrating mature, large-scale, REBCO magnets, the project was executed jointly by the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center (PSFC) and Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS). The TFMC achieved its programmatic goal of experimentally demonstrating a large-scale high-field REBCO magnet, achieving 20.1 T peak field-on-conductor with 40.5 kA of terminal current, 815 kN/m of Lorentz loading on the REBCO stacks, and almost 1 GPa of mechanical stress accommodated by the structural case. Fifteen internal demountable pancake-to-pancake joints operated in the 0.5 to 2.0 nOhm range at 20 K and in magnetic fields up to 12 T. The DC and AC electromagnetic performance of the magnet, predicted by new advances in high-fidelity computational models, was confirmed in two test campaigns while the massively parallel, single-pass, pressure-vessel style coolant scheme capable of large heat removal was validated. The REBCO current lead and feeder system was experimentally qualified up to 50 kA, and the crycooler based cryogenic system provided 600 W of cooling power at 20 K with mass flow rates up to 70 g/s at a maximum design pressure of 20 bar-a for the test campaigns. Finally, the feasibility of using passive, self-protection against a quench in a fusion-scale NI TF coil was experimentally assessed with an intentional open-circuit quench at 31.5 kA terminal current.

Quantifying Bell nonlocality of a pure two-qudit state via its entanglement

For the maximal violation of all Bell inequalities by an arbitrary pure two-qudit state of any dimension, we derive a new lower bound expressed via the concurrence of this pure state. This new lower bound and the upper bound on the maximal Bell violation, found in [J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 55, 285301 (2022)] and also expressed via the concurrence, analytically quantify Bell nonlocality of a pure two-qudit state via its entanglement, in particular, prove explicitly that entanglement of a pure two-qudit state is necessary and sufficient for its Bell nonlocality. By re-visiting the pure two-qubit case, we also find and rigorously prove the new results on the correlation properties of an arbitrary pure two-qubit state.

Correlations between X-ray Spectral and Timing Characteristics in Cyg X-2

Correlations between the quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and the spectral power-law index have been reported for a number of black hole candidate sources and for four neutron star (NS) sources, 4U 0614+09, 4U 1608-52, 4U 1728-34 and Sco X-1. An examination of QPO frequencies and index relationship in Cyg X-2 is reported herein. The RXTE spectrum of Cyg X-2 can be adequately represented by a simple two-component model of Compton up-scattering with a soft photon electron temperature of about 0.7 keV and an iron K-line. Inferred spectral power-law index shows correlation with the low QPO frequencies. We find that the Thomson optical depth of the Compton cloud (CC) tau, in framework of spherical geometry, is in the range of ~4-6, which is consistent with the neutron star's surface being obscured. The NS high frequency pulsations are presumably suppressed as a result of photon scattering off CC electrons because of such high values of tau. We also point out a number of similarities in terms timing (presence of low and high frequency QPOs) and spectral (high CC optical depth and low CC plasma temperature) appearances between Cyg X-2 and Sco X-1.

Correlations between X-ray Spectral Characteristics and Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in Sco X-1

Correlations between 1-10 Hz quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) and spectral power law index have been reported for black hole (BH) candidate sources and one neutron star source, 4U 1728-34. An examination of QPO frequency and index relationships in Sco X-1 is reported herein. We discovered that Sco X-1, representing Z-source groups, can be adequately modeled by a simple two-component model of Compton up-scattering with a soft photon electron temperature of about 0.4 keV, plus an Iron K-line. The results show a strong correlation between spectral power law index and kHz QPOs. Because Sco X-1 radiates near the Eddington limit, one can infer that the geometrical configuration of the Compton cloud (CC) is quasi-spherical because of high radiation pressure in the CC. Thus, we conclude that the high Thomson optical depth of the Compton cloud, in the range of ~5-6 from the best-fit model parameters, is consistent with the neutron star's surface being obscured by material. Moreover, a spin frequency of Sco X-1 is likely suppressed due to photon scattering off CC electrons. Additionally, we demonstrate how the power spectrum evolves when Sco X-1 transitions from the horizontal branch to the normal branch.

First observations of the X-ray transient EXO 2030+375 with IBIS/ISGRI

We present a first INTEGRAL observation of the 42s transient X-ray pulsar EXO 2030+375 with IBIS/ISGRI. The source was detected during Cyg X-1 observations in December 2002. We analyzed observations during the outburst period from 9 to 21 December 2002 with a total exposure time of ~770 kiloseconds. EXO 2030+375 was almost always detected during single ~30 minute exposures in the 18-45 energy bands. The source light curve shows the characteristic outburst shape observed in this source.

Quasi-Periodic X-ray Oscillations in the Source Sco X-1

The RXTE observations of Scorpius X-1 in 1996-1999 are presented. The properties of its quasi-periodic X-ray oscillations are studied in detail. The results obtained are used for analysis in terms of the transition-layer model (TLM) and the relativistic-precession model (RPM) for a slowly rotating neutron star. Theoretical predictions of the two models are compared and their self-consistency is verified. The tilt of the magnetosphere to the accretion-disk plane, the neutron-star mass, and its angular momentum are determined in the model frameworks.

Can Any "Invariants" Be Revealed in Quasi-periodic Phenomena Observed From Sco X-1?

Using large number of Rossi X-ray Time Explorer observations of Sco X-1 we present a detailed investigation of the transition layer (TL) and the relativistic precession (RP) models. These models predict the existence of the invariant quantities: an inclination angle delta of the magnetospheric axis with the normal to the disk for the TLM and a neutron star (NS) mass M_{NS} for the RPM. Theoretical predictions of both models are tested and their self-consistency is checked. We establish that: (1) The inferred delta angle is 5.56+/-0.09 degrees. Correlation of the delta-values with the horizontal branch oscillation (HBO) frequency is rather weak. (2) There is a strong correlation between an inferred M_{NS} and the HBO frequency in the RPM frameworks. (3) We infer M_{NS} for different assumptions regarding the relations between the HBO frequency and the nodal frequency. We find that the inferred M_{NS}=2.7+/-0.1 M_sun cannot be consistent with any EOS of NS matter. We conclude that RPM fails to describe the data while TLM seems to be compatible.

Correlation between Break Frequency and Power Density Spectrum Slope for the X-ray Source Cygnus X-2: RXTE/PCA Data

We present results of RXTE observations of the X-ray source Cyg X-2 during 1996-1999. Its power density spectra in the 0.1-128-Hz band are fitted by a model that takes into account the power-law spectral behavior at frequencies below and above the break frequency, with an introduction of one or more Lorenz lines to describe the peaks of quasi-periodic oscillations that correspond to the horizontal branch of the Z track. The RXTE observations have revealed a positive correlation between the break frequency and the indices of the two parts of the spectrum. The spectrum steepens with increasing break frequency both above and below the break frequency.

Timing Spectroscopy of Quasi-Periodic Oscillations in the Low-Mass X-ray Neutron Star Binaries

Precise simultaneous measurements of the frequencies of the two kiloHertz quasi-periodic oscillations (referred in the literature as upper and lower kHz QPOs) cast doubts on the validity of the simple beat-frequency interpretation and some of the modifications introduced to explain the results of the varying frequency difference. A new model explains the variation of the frequency difference suggesting that the upper kHz QPO,namely nu_h is an upper hybrid frequency of the Keplerian oscillator under the influence of the Coriolis force and the lower kHz QPO is the Keplerian frequency nu_K. Such an oscillator has two branches characterized by high frequency nu_h (around 1 kHz) and by low frequency nu_L (around 50 Hz). The frequency nu_L depends strongly on the angle, delta between the normal to the neutron star disk and Omega - the angular velocity of the magnetosphere surrounding the neutron star. In the lower part of the QPO spectrum (around 10 Hz), this model identifies the frequency of radial viscous oscillations nu_v (previously called "extra noise component") and the break frequency nu_b, which is associated with the diffusive process in the transition region (the innermost part of the disk). According to this model, all frequencies (namely nu_h, nu_L, nu_b and nu_v) have specific dependences on nu_K. This paper focuses on the verification of the predicted relations. For the source 4U 1728-34, the best theoretical fit is obtained for delta=8.3+/-1.0^o, which is slightly larger than delta=5.5+/- 0.5^o previously found for Sco X-1. In addition, we show that the theoretically derived power law relation, nu_b proportional to nu_v^{1.61} is consistent with the recent observations of other atoll and Z-sources.
