Effects of physical and chemical pressure on charge density wave transitions in LaAg1-xAuxSb2 single crystals

The structural characterization and electrical transport measurements at ambient and applied pressures of the compounds of the La(Ag1-xAux)Sb2 family are presented. Up to two charge density wave (CDW) transitions could be detected upon cooling from room temperature and an equivalence of the effects of chemical and physical pressure on the CDW ordering temperatures was observed with the unit cell volume being a salient structural parameter. As such La(Ag1-xAux)Sb2 is a rare example of a non-cubic system that exhibits good agreement between the effects of applied, physical, pressure and changes in unit cell volume from steric changes induced by isovalent substitution. Additionally, for La(Ag0.54Au0.46)Sb2 anomalies in low temperature electrical transport were observed in the pressure range where the lower charge density wave is completely suppressed.

Magnetism and $T-x$ phase diagrams of Na and Ag substituted EuCd$_2$As$_2$

EuCd$_2$As$_2$ is an antiferromagnetic semimetal, that can host non-trivial topological properties, depending upon its magnetic state and excitations. Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of Eu(Cd$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Eu$_{1-y}$Na$_y$Cd$_2$As$_2$, and study the evolution and nature of magnetic order with doping. Temperature-substitution phase diagrams are constructed from the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility data. We observe a splitting of the magnetic transition into two different transitions, and the gradual increase in one of the transition temperatures with Ag- and Na-substitution. The other transition remains more or less independent of doping. We further show that a magnetic state with a net ferromagnetic moment is stabilized by both Ag and Na doping and this can be explained by considering the changes in band filling due to substitution as suggested by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We thus show that chemical substitution and the subsequent changes in band filling could be a pathway to tune the magnetic ground state and to stabilize a ferromagnetic phase in EuCd$_2$As$_2$.

Observation of superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric nodal chain semimetal Ba5In4Bi5

The combination with superconductivity and topological nontrivial band structure provides a promising route towards novel quantum states such as topological superconductivity. Here, we report the first observation of superconductivity (4.1 K) in Ba5In4Bi5 single crystal, a noncentrosymmetric topological semimetal featuring nodal chain loops at the high-symmetry points R and X. The magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat capacity measurements reveal that Ba5In4Bi5 is a moderately coupled type-II Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor. Bulk superconductivity is suggested from the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. The results show that Ba5In4Bi5 provides a new platform for exploring the relationship of superconductivity and topological nontrivial band topology.

Valence and magnetism in $\rm EuPd_3S_4$ and $\rm (Y,La)_xEu_{1-x}Pd_3S_4$

$^{151}$Eu Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that yttrium substitution in mixed-valent $\rm EuPd_3S_4$ drives the initial 50:50 mix of Eu$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{2+}$ towards pure Eu$^{2+}$, whereas lanthanum substitution has the opposite effect, but only for substitution levels above 50\%. We find that total valence electron count and chemical pressure effects cannot account for the observed behaviour, however conserving the cell volume provides a consistent description of the changes in the Eu$^{2+}$:Eu$^{3+}$ ratio. Remarkably, lanthanum substitution also leads to a clear transition from static mixed-valent behavior at lower temperatures to dynamic mixed valent behavior at higher temperatures, with the onset temperature monotonically increasing with Eu content and extrapolating to a value of $\sim$340~K for the pure $\rm EuPd_3S_4$ compound. Magnetic order persists at least as far as x=0.875 in both series, despite the drastic reduction in the amount of moment-carrying Eu$^{2+}$ ions.

Pressure-temperature phase diagram of CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ for $x$=0.024

Resistance measurements on single crystals of CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ ($x$ = 0.024) were performed under hydrostatic pressure up to 5.15 GPa. The pressure dependence of the magnetic and superconducting transition temperatures and that of the superconducting upper critical field are reported. Our results show that upon increasing pressure, the magnetic transition temperature $T_{N}$ is suppressed, whereas the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ first increases and then decreases, exhibiting a maximum at a pressure $p_c$ corresponding to the intersection of the $T_{N}$($p$) and $T_{c}$($p$) lines. In addition, a minimum in the normalized slope of the superconducting upper critical field as well as a change in the pressure dependence of the inferred superconducting coherence length are observed at $p_c$, suggesting a difference in the Fermi surface of the paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states. Finally, CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$)$_4$As$_4$ ($x$ = 0.024) likely goes through a half-collapsed-tetragonal phase transition at $\sim$ 4.3 GPa, further demonstrating that the half-collapsed-tetragonal transition pressure in the CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ system is relatively insensitive to transition metal substitution.

Rapid suppression of charge density wave transition in LaSb2 under pressure

LaSb2 is found to be an example of an exceptionally pressure sensitive and tunable, two dimensional compound. In-plane electrical resistivity of LaSb2 under pressure up to 12.9 kbar was measured in zero and applied magnetic field. The charge density wave transition (observed at ~ 350 K at ambient pressure) is completely suppressed by 6-7 kbar with significant (in comparison with the ambient pressure) increase in Fermi surface gapping and transition hysteresis just above ambient pressure.

Ubiquitous enhancement of nematic fluctuations across the phase diagram of iron based superconductors probed by the Nernst effect

The role of nematic fluctuations for unconventional superconductivity has been subject of intense discussions for many years. In iron-based superconductors, the most established probe for electronic-nematic fluctuations, i.e. the elastoresistivity seems to imply that superconductivity is reinforced by electronic-nematic fluctuations, since the elastoresistivity amplitude peaks at or close to optimal $T_C$. However, on the over-doped side of the superconducting dome, the diminishing elastoresistivity suggests a negligible importance in the mechanism of superconductivity. Here we introduce the Nernst coefficient as a genuine probe for electronic nematic fluctuations, and we show that the amplitude of the Nernst coefficient tracks the superconducting dome of two prototype families of iron-based superconductors, namely Rh-doped $BaFe_{2}As_{2}$ and Co-doped $LaFeAsO$. Our data thus provide fresh evidence that in these systems nematic fluctuations foster the superconductivity throughout the phase diagram.

Hydrostatic pressure effect on Co-based honeycomb magnet BaCo2(AsO4)2

The honeycomb antiferromagnet BaCo2(AsO4)2, in which small in-plane magnetic fields (H1 = 0.26 T and H2 = 0.52 T at T = 1.8 K < TN = 5.4 K) induce two magnetic phase transitions, has attracted attention as a possible candidate material for the realization of Kitaev physics based on the 3d element Co2+. Here, we report on the change of the transition temperature TN and the critical fields H1 and H2 of BaCo2(AsO4)2 with hydrostatic pressure up to ~ 20 kbar, as determined from magnetization and specific heat measurements. Within this pressure range, a marginal increase of the magnetic ordering temperature is observed. At the same time, the critical fields are changed significantly (up to ~ 25-35 %). Specifically, we find that H1 is increased with hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the antiferromagnetic state is stabilized with hydrostatic pressure, whereas H2, which was previously associated with a transition into a proposed Kitaev spin liquid state, decreases with increasing pressure. These results put constraints on the magnetic models that are used to describe the low-temperature magnetic properties of BaCo2(AsO4)2.

Magnetization and magneto-transport measurements on CeBi single crystals

We report the synthesis of CeBi single crystals out of Bi self flux and a systematic study of the magnetic and transport properties with varying temperature and applied magnetic fields. From these $R(T,H)$ and $M(T,H)$ data we could assemble the field-temperature ($H-T$) phase diagram for CeBi and visualize the three dimensional $M-T-H$ surface. In the phase diagram, we identify regions with well defined magnetization values, and identify a new phase region. The magnetoresistance (MR) in the low temperature regime shows, above $6~$T a power-law, non-saturated behavior with large MR ($\sim 3\times10^5 \%$ at $2~$K and $13.95~$T), along with Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. With increasing temperatures, MR decreases, and then becomes negative for $T\gtrsim 10~$K. This crossover in MR seems to be unrelated to any specific magnetic or metamagnetic transitions, but rather is associated with changing from a low-temperature normal metal regime with little or no scattering from the Ce$^{3+}$ moments and an anomalously large MR, to an increased scattering from local Ce moments and a negative MR as temperature increases.

Small moment antiferromagnetic ordering in single crystalline La2Ni7

Single crystals of La2Ni7 have been grown out of a binary, La-Ni melt. Temperature dependent, zero magnetic field, specific heat, electrical resistivity, and low field magnetization measurements indicate that there is a series of antiferromagnetic phase transitions at T1 = 61.0 \pm 0.2 K, T2 = 56.5 \pm 0.2 K and T3 = 42.2 \pm 0.2 K. The three specific heat anomalies found at these temperatures qualitatively have very small entropy changes associated with them and the anisotropic M(H) data saturate at ~ 0.12 μB/Ni; both observations strongly suggesting the AFM order is associated with very small, itinerant, moments. Anisotropic, H||c and H{\perp}c, ρ(H) and M(H) isotherms as well as constant field, ρ(T) and M(T) sweeps manifest signatures of multiple phase lines and result in H-T phase diagrams that are clearly anisotropic. Analysis of M(T) and M(H) data allow for the identification of the two lower temperature magnetically ordered states as antiferromagnetically ordered, with the moments aligned along the crystallographic c-axis, and the higher temperature, T2 < T < T1, state as having a finite ferromagnetic component. In addition, the metamagnetic transition at low temperatures, for H applied along the crystallographic c-axis (H||c) appears to be a near classic example of a spin-flop transition, resulting in a field stabilized antiferromagnetic state with the moments ordered perpendicular to the c-axis. Although the small moment ordering, and existence of multiple phase transitions in field and temperature, suggesting an energetic proximity of these states, could foretell a degree of pressure sensitivity, our measurements of R(T) for applied pressures up to 2.0 GPa indicate that there is very little pressure dependence of T1, T2 and T3.

Phase diagram of CeSb$_2$ from magnetostriction and magnetization measurements: Evidence for ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic states

Cerium diantimonide (CeSb$_2$) is one of a family of rare earth based magnetic materials that exhibit metamagnetism, enabling control of the magnetic ground state through an applied magnetic field. At low temperatures, CeSb$_2$ hosts a rich phase diagram with multiple magnetically ordered phases for many of which the order parameter is only poorly understood. In this paper, we report a study of its metamagnetic properties by Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and magnetization measurements. We use STM measurements to characterize the sample magnetostriction with sub-picometer resolution from magnetic field and temperature sweeps. This allows us to directly assess the bulk phase diagram as a function of field and temperature and relate spectroscopic features from tunneling spectroscopy to bulk phases. Our magnetostriction and magnetisation measurements indicate that the low temperature ground state at zero field is ferrimagnetic. Quasiparticle interference mapping shows evidence for a reconstruction of the electronic structure close to the Fermi energy upon entering the magnetically ordered phase.

Pressure-induced ferromagnetism in the topological semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$

The antiferromagnet and semimetal EuCd$_2$As$_2$ has recently attracted a lot of attention due to a wealth of topological phases arising from the interplay of topology and magnetism. In particular, the presence of a single pair of Weyl points is predicted for a ferromagnetic configuration of Eu spins along the $c$-axis in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. In the search for such phases, we investigate here the effects of hydrostatic pressure in EuCd$_2$As$_2$. For that, we present specific heat, transport and $μ$SR measurements under hydrostatic pressure up to $\sim\,2.5\,$GPa, combined with {\it ab initio} density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Experimentally, we establish that the ground state of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ changes from in-plane antiferromagnetic (AFM$_{ab}$) to ferromagnetic at a critical pressure of $\,\approx\,$2\,GPa, which is likely characterized by the moments dominantly lying within the $ab$ plane (FM$_{ab}$). The AFM$_{ab}$-FM$_{ab}$ transition at such a relatively low pressure is supported by our DFT calculations. Furthermore, our experimental and theoretical results indicate that EuCd$_2$As$_2$ moves closer to the sought-for FM$_c$ state (moments $\parallel$ $c$) with increasing pressure further. We predict that a pressure of $\approx$\,23\,GPa will stabilize the FM$_c$ state, if Eu remains in a 2+ valence state. Thus, our work establishes hydrostatic pressure as a key tuning parameter that (i) allows for a continuous tuning between magnetic ground states in a single sample of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ and (ii) enables the exploration of the interplay between magnetism and topology and thereby motivates a series of future experiments on this magnetic Weyl semimetal.

Topological Magnetic Hysteresis in Single Crystals of CeAgSb2 Ferromagnet

Closed-topology magnetic domains are usually observed in thin films and in an applied magnetic field. Here we report the observation of rectangular cross-section tubular ferromagnetic domains in thick single crystals of CeAgSb2 in zero applied field. Relatively low exchange energy, small net magnetic moment, and anisotropic in-plane crystal electric fields lower the domain wall energy and allow for the formation of the closed-topology patterns. Upon cycling the magnetic field, the domain structure irreversibly transforms into a dendritic open-topology pattern. This transition between closed and open topologies results in a "topological magnetic hysteresis" - the actual hysteresis in magnetization, not due to the imperfections and pinning, but due to the difference in the pattern morphology. Similar physics was suggested before in pure type-I superconductors and is believed to be a generic feature of other nonlinear multi-phase systems in the clean limit.

Magnetic order in van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS4: anisotropic H-T phase diagrams and effects of pressure

Single crystalline samples of the van der Waals antiferromagnet CrPS4 were studied by measurements of specific heat and comprehensive anisotropic temperature- and magnetic field-dependent magnetization. In addition, measurements of the heat capacity and magnetization were performed under pressures of up to ~21 kbar and ~14 kbar respectively. At ambient pressure, two magnetic transitions are observed, second order from a paramagnetic to an antiferromagnetic state at TN ~ 37 K, and a first-order spin reorientation transition at T* ~ 34 K. Anisotropic H - T phase diagrams were constructed using the M(T,H) data. As pressure is increased, TN is weakly suppressed with dTN/dP ~ -0.1 K/kbar. T*, on the other hand, is suppressed quite rapidly, with dT*/dP ~ -2 K/kbar, extrapolating to a possible quantum phase transition at Pc ~ 15 kbar.

Comment on "Unconventional enhancement of ferromagnetic interactions in Cd-doped GdFe2Zn20 single crystals studied by ESR and 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopies"

In the recent publication, Phys. Rev. B 102, 144420 (2020), Cabrera-Baez et al. present a study of the effects of Cd-substitution for Zn in the ferromagnetic compound GdFe2Zn20. As part of this paper, they claim that for GdFe2Zn18.6Cd1.4 the effective moment of Gd is reduced by 25% and the saturated moment of Gd is reduced by over 40%. We regrew representative members of the GdFe2Zn(20-x)Cdx series and did not find any such reductions. In addition, we measured several crystals from the growth batch that was used by Cabrera-Baez et al. and did not see such reductions. Although there is a modest increase in TC with Cd substitution, there is no significant change in the Gd effective moment or the saturated moment associated with the low temperature ferromagnetic state.

Evolution of nematic fluctuations in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ with spin-vortex crystal magnetic order

The CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ superconductors resemble the archetypal 122-type iron-based materials but have a crystal structure with distinctly lower symmetry. This family hosts one of the few examples of the so-called spin-vortex crystal magnetic order, a non-collinear magnetic configuration that preserves tetragonal symmetry, in contrast to the orthorhombic collinear stripe-type magnetic configuration common to the 122-type systems. Thus, nematic order is completely absent from its phase diagram. To investigate the evolution of nematic fluctuations in such a case, we present elastoresistance and elastic modulus measurements in CaK(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{4}$As$_{4}$ ($x = 0-0.05$) combined with phenomenological modeling and density functional theory. We find clear experimental signatures of considerable nematic fluctuations, including softening of the Young's modulus $Y_{[110]}$ and a Curie-Weiss type divergence of the B2g elastoresistance coefficient in CaK(Fe$_{0.951}$Ni$_{0.049}$)$_4$As$_4$. Overall, nematic fluctuations within this series bear strong similarities to the hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ series, including a substitution-induced sign change. Our theoretical analysis addresses the effect of the specific crystal symmetry of the 1144-type structure in determining its magnetic ground state and on the nematic fluctuations.

Formation of short-range magnetic order and avoided ferromagnetic quantum criticality in pressurized LaCrGe$_3$

LaCrGe$_3$ has attracted attention as a paradigm example of the avoidance of ferromagnetic (FM) quantum criticality in an itinerant magnet. By combining thermodynamic, transport, x-ray and neutron scattering as well as $μ$SR measurements, we refined the temperature-pressure phase diagram of LaCrGe$_3$. We provide thermodynamic evidence (i) for the first-order character of the FM transition when it is suppressed to low temperatures and (ii) for the formation of new phases at high pressures. From our microscopic data, we infer that short-range FM ordered clusters exist in these high-pressure phases. These results suggest that LaCrGe$_3$ is a rare example, which fills the gap between the two extreme limits of avoided FM quantum criticality in clean and strongly disordered metals.

Avoided ferromagnetic quantum critical point in pressurized La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$

We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ up to $\sim$ 5\,GPa, which was constructed from magnetization, resistivity and specific heat measurements. At ambient pressure, La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ is an itinerant ferromagnet with a Curie temperature $T_\textrm C\sim$ 4\,K. Upon increasing pressure up to $\sim$ 1.7\,GPa, $T_\textrm C$ is suppressed down to $\sim$ 3\,K. Upon further increasing pressure, our results suggest that La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ enters a different low-temperature ground state. The corresponding transition temperature, $T^*$, has a nonmonotonic pressure dependence up to $\sim$ 5\,GPa. Our results demonstrate that the ferromagnetic quantum critical point in La$_5$Co$_2$Ge$_3$ is avoided by the appearance of a different, likely magnetically ordered state that has an antiferromagnetic component.
