Fermi surface reconstruction in (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (0.44 $\leq x \leq$ 1) probed by thermoelectric power measurements

We report in-plane thermoelectric power measurements on single crystals of (Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$)Fe$_2$As$_2$ (0.44 $\leq x \leq$ 1). We observe a minimum in the S$|_{T=const}$ versus x at x ~ 0.55 that can be associated with the change in the topology of the Fermi surface, a Lifshitz transition, related to the electron pockets at the center of M point crossing the Fermi level. This feature is clearly observable below ~ 75 K. Thermoelectric power also shows a change in the x ~ 0.8 - 0.9 range, where maximum in the thermoelectric power collapses into a plateau. This Lifshitz transition is most likely related to the reconstruction of the Fermi surface associated with the transformation of the hole pockets at the M point into four blades as observed by ARPES measurements.

Magnetic and transport properties of i-$R$-Cd icosahedral quasicrystals ($R$ = Y, Gd-Tm)

We present a detailed characterization of the recently discovered i-$R$-Cd ($R$ = Y, Gd-Tm) binary quasicrystals by means of x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent dc and ac magnetization, temperature-dependent resistance and temperature-dependent specific heat measurements. Structurally, the broadening of x-ray diffraction peaks found for i-$R$-Cd is dominated by frozen-in phason strain, which is essentially independent of $R$. i-Y-Cd is weakly diamagnetic and manifests a temperature-independent susceptibility. i-Gd-Cd can be characterized as a spin-glass below 4.6 K via dc magnetization cusp, a third order non-linear magnetic susceptibility peak, a frequency-dependent freezing temperature and a broad maximum in the specific heat. i-$R$-Cd ($R$ = Ho-Tm) is similar to i-Gd-Cd in terms of features observed in thermodynamic measurements. i-Tb-Cd and i-Dy-Cd do not show a clear cusp in their zero-field-cooled dc magnetization data, but instead show a more rounded, broad local maximum. The resistivity for i-$R$-Cd is of order 300 $μΩ$ cm and weakly temperature-dependent. The characteristic freezing temperatures for i-$R$-Cd ($R$ = Gd-Tm) deviate from the de Gennes scaling, in a manner consistent with crystal electric field splitting induced local moment anisotropy.

Combined effects of transition metal (Ni and Rh) substitution and annealing/quenching on physical properties of CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$

We performed systematic studies of the combined effects of annealing/quenching temperature ({\itshape T}$_{A/Q}$) and T = Ni, Rh substitution ({\itshape x}) on the physical properties of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$. We constructed two-dimensional, {\itshape T}$_{A/Q}$-{\itshape x} phase diagrams for the low-temperature states for both substitutions to map out the relations between ground states and compared them with that of Co-substitution. Ni-substitution, which brings one more extra electron per substituted atom and suppresses the {\itshape c}-lattice parameter at roughly the same rate as Co-substitution, leads to a similar parameter range of antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic in the {\itshape T}$_{A/Q}$-{\itshape x} space as that found for Co-substitution, but has the parameter range for superconductivity shrunk (roughly by a factor of two). This result is similar to what is found when Co- and Ni-substituted BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ are compared. On the other hand, Rh-substitution, which brings the same amount of extra electrons as does Co-substitution, but suppresses the {\itshape c}-lattice parameter more rapidly, has a different phase diagram. The collapsed tetragonal phase exists much more pervasively, to the exclusion of the normal, paramagnetic, tetragonal phase. The range of antiferromagnetic/orthorhombic phase space is noticeably reduced, and the superconducting region is substantially suppressed, essentially truncated by the collapsed tetragonal phase. In addition, we found that whereas for Co-substitution there was no difference between phase diagrams for samples annealed for one or seven days, for Ni- and Rh- substitutions a second, reversible, effect of annealing was revealed by seven-day anneals.

Heat capacity jump at T_c and pressure derivatives of superconducting transition temperature in the Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2 (0.1 <= x <= 0.9) series

We present the evolution of the initial (up to ~ 10 kbar) hydrostatic, pressure dependencies of T_c and of the ambient pressure jump in the heat capacity associated with the superconducting transition as a function of Na - doping in the Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2 family of iron-based superconductors. For Na concentrations 0.15 <= x <= 0.9, the jump in specific heat at T_c, Delta C_p, follows the Delta C_p ~ T^3 scaling found for most BaFe2As2 - based superconductors. Pressure dependencies are non-monotonic for x = 0.2 and x = 0.24. For other Na concentrations T_c decreases under pressure in almost linear fashion. The anomalous behavior of the x = 0.2 and x = 0.24 samples under pressure are possibly due to the crossing of the phase boundaries of the narrow antiferromagnetic tetragonal phase, unique for the Ba(1-x)NaxFe2As2 series, with the application of pressure.

Physical properties of CeGe2-x (x = 0.24) single crystals

We present data on the anisotropic magnetic properties, heat capacity and transport properties of CeGe2-x (x = 0.24) single crystals. The electronic coefficient of the heat capacity, gamma ~ 110 mJ/mol K^2, is enhanced; three magnetic transitions, with critical temperatures of ~ 7 K, ~ 5 K, and ~ 4 K are observed in thermodynamic and transport measurements. The ground state has a small ferromagnetic component along the c - axis. Small applied field, below 10 kOe, is enough to bring the material to an apparent saturated paramagnetic state (with no further metamagnetic transitions up to 55 kOe) with a reduced, below 1 mu_B, saturated moment.

Thermodynamic and transport properties of single crystalline RCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm)

Single crystals of RCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ (R = Y, La-Nd, Sm-Tm) were grown using a self-flux method and were characterized by room-temperature powder x-ray diffraction; anisotropic, temperature and field dependent magnetization; temperature and field dependent, in-plane resistivity; and specific heat measurements. In this series, the majority of the moment-bearing members order antiferromagnetically; YCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and LaCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ are non-moment-bearing. Ce is trivalent in CeCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ at high temperatures, and exhibits an enhanced electronic specific heat coefficient due to Kondo effect at low temperatures. In addition, CeCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ shows two low-temperature anomalies in temperature-dependent magnetization and specific heat measurements. Three members (R = Tb-Ho) have multiple phase transitions above 1.8 K. Eu appears to be divalent with total angular momentum L = 0. Both EuCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and GdCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ manifest essentially isotropic paramagnetic properties consistent with J = S = 7/2. Clear magnetic anisotropy for rare-earth members with finite L was observed, with ErCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ and TmCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$ manifesting planar anisotropy and the rest members manifesting axial anisotropy. The experimentally estimated crystal electric field (CEF) parameters B$_{2}^{0}$ were calculated from the anisotropic paramagnetic $θ_{ab}$ and $θ_{c}$ values and follow a trend that agrees well with theoretical predictions. The ordering temperatures, T$_{N}$, as well as the polycrystalline averaged paramagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature, $Θ_{avg}$, for the heavy rare-earth members deviate from the de Gennes scaling, as the magnitude of both are the highest for Tb, which is sometimes seen for extremely axial systems. Except for SmCo$_{2}$Ge$_{2}$, metamagnetic transitions were observed at 1.8 K for all members that ordered antiferromagnetically.

Suppression of ferromagnetism in the La(V$_x$Cr$_{1-x}$)Sb$_3$ system

To explore the possibility of quantum phase transitions and even quantum criticality in LaCrSb$_3$ based compounds, we performed measurements under pressure as well as a vanadium substitution study. The Curie temperature of LaCrSb$_3$ was found to be invariant under pressure. Although pressure was not able to suppress the ferromagnetism, chemical substitution was used as another parameter to tune the magnetism. We grew La(V$_x$Cr$_{1-x}$)Sb$_3$ (\textit{x} = 0 -- 1.0) single crystals, and studied the series by measurements of temperature and field dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat. Ferromagnetism has been observed for $x \leq 0.22$, and the system manifests a strong anisotropy in its ordered state. The Curie temperature decreases monotonically as the V concentration increases. For $0.42 \leq x \leq 0.73$, the system enters a new magnetic state at low temperatures, and no magnetic ordering above 1.8 K can be observed for $x \geq 0.88$. The effective moment $μ_{\rm eff}$/Cr varies only slightly as the V concentration increases, from 3.9 $μ_{\rm B}$ for $x$ = 0 to 2.9 $μ_{\rm B}$ for $x$ = 0.88. Features related to quantum criticality have not been observed in the La(V$_x$Cr$_{1-x}$)Sb$_3$ system.

Magnetic structures and the Ce-Fe coupling induced Fe spin reorientation in CeFeAsO single crystal

Neutron and synchrotron resonant X-ray magnetic scattering (RXMS) complemented by heat capacity and resistivity measurements reveal the evolution of the magnetic structures of Fe and Ce sublattices in single crystal CeFeAsO. The RXMS of magnetic reflections at the Ce $L_{\rm II}$-edge shows a magnetic transition that is specific to the Ce antiferromagnetic long-range ordering at $T_\texttt{Ce}\approx$ 4 K with short-range Ce ordering above $T_\texttt{Ce}$, whereas neutron diffraction measurements of a few magnetic reflections indicate a transition at $T^{*}\approx$ 12 K with unusual order parameter. Detailed order parameter measurements on several magnetic reflections by neutrons show a weak anomaly at 4 K which we associate with the Ce ordering. The successive transitions at $T_\texttt{Ce}$ and $T^{*}$ can also be clearly identified by two anomalies in heat capacity and resistivity measurements. The higher transition temperature at $T^{*}\approx$ 12 K is mainly ascribed to Fe spin reorientation transition, below which Fe spins rotate uniformly and gradually in the \textit{ab} plane. The Fe spin reorientation transition and short-range Ce ordering above $T_\texttt{Ce}$ reflect the strong Fe-Ce couplings prior to long-range ordering of the Ce. The evolution of the intricate magnetic structures in CeFeAsO going through $T^{*}$ and $T_\texttt{Ce}$ is proposed.

Thermal expansion of CaFe2As2: effect of cobalt doping and post-growth thermal treatment

We report thermal expansion measurements on Ca(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)_2As_2 single crystals with different thermal treatment, with samples chosen to represent four different ground states observed in this family. For all samples thermal expansion is anisotropic with different signs of the in-plane and c-axis thermal expansion coefficients in the high temperature, tetragonal phase. The features in thermal expansion associated with the phase transitions are of opposite signs as well, pointing to a different response of transition temperatures to the in-plane and the c-axis stress. These features, and consequently the inferred pressure derivatives, are very large, clearly and substantially exceeding those in the Ba(Fe_(1-x)Co_x)_2As_2 family. For all transitions the c-axis response is dominant.

Suppression of ferromagnetism in the LaVxCr1-xGe3 system

We report synthesis of hexagonal LaVxCr1-xGe3 (x = 0-0.21, 1.00) single crystals, and present a systematic study of this series by measurements of temperature and field dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat. Ferromagnetism has been observed for x = 0-0.21, and the system manifests a strong axial anisotropy in its ordered state. The decrease of the saturated moment and the effective moment per Cr with the increase of V-concentration suggests this is an itinerant ferromagnetic system. The Curie temperature declines monotonically as the V-concentration increases. Single crystalline samples could only be grown for x-values up to 0.21 for which the transition temperature was suppressed down to 36 K. Although we could not fully suppress TC via V-substitution, for x = 0.16, we performed magnetization measurements under pressure. The ferromagnetic state is suppressed under pressure at an initial rate of dTC/dp = -11.7 K/GPa and vanishes by 3.3 GPa.

Heat capacity jump at Tc and pressure derivatives of superconducting transition temperature in the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 (0.2 < x < 1.0) series

We present the evolution of the initial (up to ~ 10 kbar) hydrostatic, pressure dependencies of Tc and of the ambient pressure jump in the heat capacity associated with the superconducting transition as a function of K - doping in the Ba1-xKxFe2As2 family of iron-based superconductors. The pressure derivatives show weak but distinct anomaly near x ~ 0.7. In the same concentration region Delta Cp at Tc deviates from the Delta Cp ~ T^3 scaling found for most BaFe2As2 - based superconductors. These results are consistent with a Lifshitz transition, and possible significant modification of the superconducting state, occurring near x ~ 0.7.

i-R-Cd (R = Gd - Tm, Y): A new family of binary magnetic icosahedral quasicrystals

"Seek and ye shall find, the unsought shall go undetected." This adage, attributed to Aristophanes' can be considered one of the defining mantras of new materials research; if you don't look, you certainly will not discover. As a result of our recent discovery of the binary quasicrystalline phase i-Sc12Zn88 we proposed that there may well be other binary quasicrystalline phases lurking nearby known crystalline approximants, perhaps as peritectally forming compounds with very limited liquidus surfaces, offering greatly reduced ranges of composition/temperature for primary solidification. Here we report that, as the adage goes, we have found. Indeed, adjacent to the RCd6, cubic approximate structure, we have discovered the long sought after model system for magnetic quasicrystals: a new family of at least seven rare earth icosahedral quasicrystals: i-R-Cd for R = Gd - Tm, Y, six of which now form the known set of moment bearing, binary quasicrystals.

Magnetoelastic coupling and charge correlation lengths in a twin domain of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($x=0.047$): A high-resolution X-ray diffraction study

The interplay between structure, magnetism and superconductivity in single crystal Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (x=0.047) has been studied using high-resolution X-ray diffraction by monitoring charge Bragg reflections in each twin domain separately. The emergence of the superconducting state is correlated with the suppression of the orthorhombic distortion around \emph{T}$_\texttt{C}$, exhibiting competition between orthorhombicity and superconductivity. Above \emph{T}$_\texttt{S}$, the in-plane charge correlation length increases with the decrease of temperature, possibly induced by nematic fluctuations in the paramagnetic tetragonal phase. Upon cooling, anomalies in the in-plane charge correlation lengths along $a$ ($ξ_{a}$) and $b$ axes ($ξ_{b}$) are observed at \emph{T}$_\texttt{S}$ and also at \emph{T}$_\texttt{N}$ indicative of strong magnetoelastic coupling. The in-plane charge correlation lengths are found to exhibit anisotropic behavior along and perpendicular to the in-plane component of stripe-type AFM wave vector (101)$_{\rm O}$ below around \emph{T}$_\texttt{N}$. The temperature dependence of the out-of-plane charge correlation length shows a single anomaly at \emph{T}$_\texttt{N}$, reflecting the connection between Fe-As distance and Fe local moment. The origin of the anisotropic in-plane charge correlation lengths $ξ_{a}$ and $ξ_{b}$ is discussed on the basis of the antiphase magnetic domains and their dynamic fluctuations.

Hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure dependence of superconducting transition temperature of KFe2As2 single crystals

We present heat capacity, c-axis thermal expansion and pressure dependent, low field, temperature dependent magnetization for pressures up to ~ 12 kbar, data for KFe2As2 single crystals. Tc decreases under pressure with dTc/dP ~ -0.10 K/kbar. The inferred uniaxial, c-axis, pressure derivative is positive, dTc/dpc ~ 0.11 K/kbar. The data are analyzed in comparison with those for overdoped Fe-based superconductors. Arguments are presented that superconductivity in KFe2As2 may be different from the other overdoped, Fe-based materials in the 122 family.

Anisotropic magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity of single crystalline R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd)

We present a detailed study of R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = La, Ce, Pr and Nd) single crystals by measurements of crystal structure, stoichiometry, temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, and specific heat. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy with x varying from ~ 0.1 for R = La to ~0.7 for R = Nd. The electrical resistivity of this series follows metallic behavior at high temperatures. Determination of clear anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for R3Ni2-xSn7 (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) have been made. For Pr3Ni1.56Sn7 and Nd3Ni1.34Sn7, multiple magnetic transitions take place upon cooling. Metamagnetic transitions in this family (R = Ce, Pr and Nd) were detected for applied magnetic fields below 70 kOe. An H-T phase diagram of Ce3Ni1.69Sn7 was assembled to shed light on its low field properties and to rule out possible quantum critical effects.

Boron isotope effect in single crystals of ErNi$_2$B$_2$C superconductor

The influence of local moment magnetism on the boron isotope effect of T$_c$ was studied on single crystals of ErNi$_2$B$_2$C. Values of the partial isotope effect exponent of $α_B$=0.10$\pm$0.02 and $α_B$=0.10$\pm$0.04 were obtained based on two different criteria applied to extract $T_c$. No significant change in the partial isotope effect exponent compared to the ones obtained for LuNi$_2$B$_2$C was observed. Based on this result we conclude that pair-breaking due to the Er local magnetic moment appears to have no detectable influence on boron isotope effect of T$_c$.

Anisotropic magnetization and resistivity of single crystalline RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy)

We present a detailed study of RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) single crystals by measurements of stoichiometry and temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, and electrical resistivity. This series forms with partial Ni occupancy as well as a variable Bi occupancy. For R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy, the RNi1-xBi2+-y compounds show local-moment like behavior and order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Determination of anisotropies as well as antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures for RNi1-xBi2+-y (R = Ce-Nd, Sm, Gd-Dy) have been made. Although crystalline samples from this family exhibit minority, second phase superconductivity at low temperatures associated with Ni-Bi and Bi contamination, no evidence of bulk superconductivity has been observed.

Frequency dependence of the spin glass freezing temperatures in icosahedral R - Mg - Zn (R = rare earth) quasicrystals

We present ac susceptibility measurements with the frequency spanning three orders of magnitude on single grain, icosahedral R - Mg - Zn (R = rare earth) quasicrystals. The freezing temperature in Gd-based, Heisenberg spin glasses in this family increases by ~ 2% with a frequency increase from 10 Hz to 10 kHz, whereas the freezing temperature in the non-Heisenberg members of the family is significantly more responsive to the frequency change (by 16 - 22 %), suggesting that an additional magnetic anisotropy distribution in the non-Heisenberg spin glasses causes changes in the low frequency magnetic dynamics.
