On the orthogonality of solutions for higher-order non-Hermitian difference equations

In this paper we study higher-order difference equations which can be written as follows: $$ \mathbf{J} (y_0,y_1,...)^T = λ^N (y_0,y_1,...)^T, $$ where $\mathbf{J}$ is a $(2N+1)$-diagonal bounded banded matrix ($\mathbf{J}=(g_{m,n})_{m,n=0}^\infty$, $| g_{m,n} |< C$, $C>0$; and $g_{k,l}=0$ if $|k-l|>N$), $y_j$s are unknowns, $λ$ is a complex parameter, $N\in\mathbb{N}$. It is assumed that all $g_{k,k+N}$ and $g_{l-N,l}$ are nonzero. Two special cases are considered: \noindent \textit{Case A}: The matrix $\mathbf{J}$ is complex symmetric, i.e. $\mathbf{J} = \mathbf{J}^T$. \noindent \textit{Case B}: The matrix $\mathbf{J}$ is such that $g_{k,k+N}=1$, $k=0,1,2,...$. Notice that this condition can be attained by changing $y_j$s by their multiples. In both cases there exists a \textit{positive} matrix measure $M$ on a circle in the complex plane such that polynomial solutions satisfy some orthogonality relations. Namely, in case~A this is related to a $J$-orthogonality in the Hilbert space $L^2(M)$ ($J$ is a complex conjugation). In case~B we have a left $J$-orthogonality in $L^2(M)$. As a tool, a related matrix moment problem is studied. A complex rank-one perturbation of a free Jacobi matrix is discussed.

An analytical parameterization for all solutions of the two-dimensional moment problem under Carleman-type conditions

The two-dimensional moment problem consists of finding a positive Borel measure $μ$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ such that $\int_{\mathbb{R}^2} t_1^m t_2^n dμ= s_{m,n}$, $m,n=0,1,2,...$, where $s_{m,n}$ are prescribed real constants (moments). We study this moment problem in the case when the sequence $\{ s_{m,n} \}_{m,n=0}^\infty$ is positive semi-definite, and the following Carleman-type conditions hold: $$ \sum_{k=1}^\infty \frac{1}{ \sqrt[2k]{ s_{2m,2k} + s_{2m+2,2k} } } = \infty,\quad m=0,1,2,.... $$ In this case all solutions of the moment problem are parameterized by a class of analytic contractive operator-valued functions. The special case of the determinate moment problem is characterized. We introduce a notion of a generalized resolvent for a pair of commuting symmetric operators. We use basic properties of such generalized resolvents as a main tool in studying the above moment problem.

The truncated multidimensional moment problem: canonical solutions

For the truncated multidimensional moment problem we introduce a notion of a canonical solution. Namely, canonical solutions are those solutions which are generated by commuting self-adjoint extensions inside the associated Hilbert space. It is constructed a 1-1 correspondence between canonical solutions and flat extensions of the given moments (both sets may be empty). In the case of the two-dimensional moment problem (with triangular truncations) a search for canonical solutions leads to an algebraic system of equations. A notion of the index $i_s$ of nonself-adjointness for a set of prescribed moments is introduced. The case $i_s=0$ corresponds to flatness. In the case $i_s=1$ we get explicit necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of canonical solutions. These conditions are valid for arbitrary sizes of truncations. In the case $i_s=2$ we get either explicit conditions for the existence of canonical solutions or a single quadratic equation with several unknowns. Numerical examples are provided.

Positive orthogonalizing weights on the unit circle for the generalized Bessel polynomials

In this paper we study the generalized Bessel polynomials $y_n(x,a,b)$ (in the notation of Krall and Frink). Let $a>1$, $b\in(-1/3,1/3)\backslash\{ 0\}$. In this case we present the following positive continuous weights $p(θ) = p(θ,a,b)$ on the unit circle for $y_n(x,a,b)$: $$ 2πp(θ,a,b) = -1 + 2(a-1) \int_0^1 e^{-bu\cosθ} \cos(bu\sinθ) (1-u)^{a-2} du, $$ where $θ\in[0,2π]$. Namely, we have $$ \int_0^{2π} y_n(e^{iθ},a,b) y_m(e^{iθ},a,b) p(θ,a,b) dθ= C_n δ_{n,m},\qquad C_n\not=0,\ n,m\in\mathbb{Z}_+. $$ Notice that this orthogonality differs from the usual orthogonality of OPUC. Some applications of the above orthogonality are given.

On some hypergeometric Sobolev orthogonal polynomials with several continuous parameters

In this paper we study the following hypergeometric polynomials: $\mathcal{P}_n(x) = \mathcal{P}_n(x;α,β,δ_1,\dots,δ_ρ,κ_1,\dots,κ_ρ) = {}_{ρ+2} F_{ρ+1} (-n,n+α+β+1,δ_1+1,\dots,δ_ρ+1;α+1,κ_1+δ_1+1,\dots,κ_ρ+δ_ρ+1;x)$, and $\mathcal{L}_n(x) = \mathcal{L}_n(x;α,δ_1,\dots,δ_ρ,κ_1,\dots,κ_ρ) = {}_{ρ+1} F_{ρ+1} (-n,δ_1+1,\dots,δ_ρ+1;α+1,κ_1+δ_1+1,\dots,κ_ρ+δ_ρ+1;x)$, $n\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, where $α,β,δ_1,\dots,δ_ρ\in(-1,+\infty)$, and $κ_1,\dots,κ_ρ\in\mathbb{Z}_+$, are some parameters. The natural number $ρ$ of the continuous parameters $δ_1,\dots,δ_ρ$ can be chosen arbitrarily large. It is seen that the special case $κ_1=\dots=κ_ρ=0$ leads to Jacobi and Laguerre orthogonal polynomials. In general, it is shown that polynomials $\mathcal{P}_n(x)$ and $\mathcal{L}_n(x)$ are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the real line with some explicit matrix measures. We study integral representations, differential equations and generating functions for these polynomials. Recurrence relations and properties of their zeros are discussed as well.

On bounded complex Jacobi matrices and related moment problems

In this paper we study the linear functional $S$ on complex polynomials which is associated to a bounded complex Jacobi matrix $J$. The associated moment problem is considered: find a positive Borel measure $μ$ on $\mathbb{C}$ subject to conditions $\int z^n dμ= s_n$, where $s_n$ are prescribed complex numbers (moments). This moment problem may be viewed as an extension of the Stieltjes and Hamburger moment problems to the complex plane. Sufficient conditions for the solvability of the moment problem are provided. As a corollary, we obtain conditions for the existence of an integral representation $S(p) = \int_\mathbb{C} p(z) dμ$, with a positive Borel measure $μ$. An interrelation of the associated to the complex Jacobi matrix operator $A_0$, acting in $l^2$ on finite vectors, and the multiplication by z operator in $L^2_μ$ is discussed as well.

On orthogonal Laurent polynomials related to the partial sums of power series

Let $f(z) = \sum_{k=0}^\infty d_k z^k$, $d_k\in\mathbb{C}\backslash\{ 0 \}$, $d_0=1$, be a power series with a non-zero radius of convergence $ρ$: $0 <ρ\leq +\infty$. Denote by $f_n(z)$ the n-th partial sum of $f$, and $R_{2n}(z) = \frac{ f_{2n}(z) }{ z^n }$, $R_{2n+1}(z) = \frac{ f_{2n+1}(z) }{ z^{n+1} }$, $n=0,1,2,...$. By the result of Hendriksen and Van Rossum there exists a linear functional $\mathbf{L}$ on Laurent polynomials, such that $\mathbf{L}(R_n R_m) = 0$, when $n\not= m$, while $\mathbf{L}(R_n^2)\not= 0$. We present an explicit integral representation for $\mathbf{L}$ in the above case of the partial sums. We use methods from the theory of generating functions. The case of finite systems of such Laurent polynomials is studied as well.

On the multiplication operator by an independent variable in matrix Sobolev spaces

We study the operator $\mathcal{A}$ of multiplication by an independent variable in a matrix Sobolev space $W^2(M)$. In the cases of finite measures on $[a,b]$ with $(2\times 2)$ and $(3\times 3)$ real continuous matrix weights of full rank it is shown that the operator $\mathcal{A}$ is symmetrizable. Namely, there exist two symmetric operators $\mathcal{B}$ and $\mathcal{C}$ in a larger space such that $\mathcal{A} f = \mathcal{C} \mathcal{B}^{-1} f$, $f\in D(\mathcal{A})$. As a corollary, we obtain some new orthogonality conditions for the associated Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. These conditions involve two symmetric operators in an indefinite metric space.

On the similarity of complex symmetric operators to perturbations of restrictions of normal operators

In this paper we consider a problem of the similarity of complex symmetric operators to perturbations of restrictions of normal operators. For a subclass of cyclic complex symmetric operators in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space we prove the similarity to rank-one perturbations of restrictions of normal operators. The main tools are a truncated moment problem in $\mathbb{C}$, and some objects similar to objects from the theory of spectral problems for Jacobi matrices.

On the truncated multidimensional moment problems in $\mathbb{C}^n$

We consider the problem of finding a (non-negative) measure $μ$ on $\mathfrak{B}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ such that $\int_{\mathbb{C}^n} \mathbf{z}^{\mathbf{k}} dμ(\mathbf{z}) = s_{\mathbf{k}}$, $\forall \mathbf{k}\in\mathcal{K}$. Here $\mathcal{K}$ is an arbitrary finite subset of $\mathbb{Z}^n_+$, which contains $(0,...,0)$, and $s_{\mathbf{k}}$ are prescribed complex numbers (we use the usual notations for multi-indices). There are two possible interpretations of this problem. At first, one may consider this problem as an extension of the truncated multidimensional moment problem on $\mathbb{R}^n$, where the support of the measure $μ$ is allowed to lie in $\mathbb{C}^n$. Secondly, the moment problem is a particular case of the truncated moment problem in $\mathbb{C}^n$, with special truncations. We give simple conditions for the solvability of the above moment problem. As a corollary, we have an integral representation with a non-negative measure for linear functionals on some linear subspaces of polynomials.

On the generalized hypergeometric function, Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and biorthogonal rational functions

It turned out that the partial sums $g_n(z) = \sum_{k=0}^n \frac{(a_1)_k ... (a_p)_k}{(b_1)_k ... (b_q)_k} \frac{z^k}{k!}$, of the generalized hypergeometric series ${}_p F_q(a_1,...,a_p; b_1,...,b_q;z)$, with parameters $a_j,b_l\in\mathbb{C}\backslash\{ 0,-1,-2,... \}$, are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. The corresponding monic polynomials $G_n(z)$ are polynomials of $R_I$ type, and therefore they are related to biorthogonal rational functions. Polynomials $g_n$ possess a differential equation (in $z$), and a recurrence relation (in $n$). We study integral representations for $g_n$, and some other their basic properties. Partial sums of arbitrary power series with non-zero coefficients are shown to be also related to biorthogonal rational functions. We obtain a relation of polynomials $g_n(z)$ to Jacobi-type pencils and their associated polynomials.

On some Sobolev spaces with matrix weights and classical type Sobolev orthogonal polynomials

For every system $\{ p_n(z) \}_{n=0}^\infty$ of OPRL or OPUC, we construct Sobolev orthogonal polynomials $y_n(z)$, with explicit integral representations involving $p_n$. Two concrete families of Sobolev orthogonal polynomials (depending on an arbitrary number of complex parameters) which are generalized eigenvalues of a difference operator (in $n$) and generalized eigenvalues of a differential operator (in $n$) are given. Applications of a general connection between Sobolev orthogonal polynomials and orthogonal systems of functions in the direct sum of scalar $L^2_μ$ spaces are discussed.

On modified kernel polynomials and classical type Sobolev orthogonal polynomials

In this paper we study modified kernel polynomials: $u_n(x) = \sum_{k=0}^n c_k g_k(x)$, depending on parameters $c_k>0$, where $\{ g_k \}_0^\infty$ are orthonormal polynomials on the real line. Besides kernel polynomials with $c_k = g_k(t_0)>0$, for example, $c_k$ may be chosen to be some other solutions of the corresponding second-order difference equation of $g_k$. It is shown that all these polynomials satisfy a $4$-th order recurrence relation. The cases with $g_k$ being Jacobi or Laguerre polynomials are of a special interest. Suitable choices of parameters $c_k$ imply $u_n$ to be Sobolev orthogonal polynomials with a $(3\times 3)$ matrix measure. Moreover, a further selection of parameters gives differential equations for $u_n$. In the latter case, polynomials $u_n(x)$ are solutions to a generalized eigenvalue problems both in $x$ and in $n$.

On a family of hypergeometric Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle

In this paper we study the following family of hypergeometric polynomials: $y_n(x) = \frac{ (-1)^ρ}{ n! } x^n {}_2 F_0(-n,ρ;-;-\frac{1}{x})$, depending on a parameter $ρ\in\mathbb{N}$. Differential equations of orders $ρ+1$ and $2$ for these polynomials are given. A recurrence relation for $y_n$ is derived as well. Polynomials $y_n$ are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle with an explicit matrix measure.

On extensions of commuting tuples of symmetric and isometric operators

In this paper we study extensions of commuting tuples of symmetric and isometric operators to commuting tuples of self-adjoint and unitary operators. Some conditions which ensure the existence of such extensions are presented. A multidimensional analog of the Godič-Lucenko Theorem is proved. An application to a multidimensional power-trigonometric moment problem is given.

On some classical type Sobolev orthogonal polynomials

In this paper we propose a way to construct classical type Sobolev orthogonal polynomials. We consider two families of hypergeometric polynomials: ${}_2 F_2(-n,1;q,r;x)$ and ${}_3 F_2(-n,n-1+a+b,1;a,c;x)$ ($a,b,c,q,r>0$, $n=0,1,...$), which generalize Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, respectively. These polynomials satisfy higher-order differential equations of the following form: $L y + λ_n D y = 0$, where $L,D$ are linear differential operators with polynomial coefficients not depending on $n$. For positive integer values of the parameters $r,c$ these polynomials are Sobolev orthogonal polynomials with some explicitly given measures. Some basic properties of these polynomials, including recurrence relations, are obtained.

Difference equations related to Jacobi-type pencils

In this paper we study various difference equations related to Jacobi-type pencils. By a Jacobi-type pencil one means the following pencil: $J_5 - λJ_3$, where $J_3$ is a Jacobi matrix and $J_5$ is a semi-infinite real symmetric five-diagonal matrix with positive numbers on the second subdiagonal. The basic set of solutions for the corresponding $4$-th order difference equation is constructed. Spectral properties of the truncated pencil and some special matrix orthogonality relations are investigated. Classical type orthogonal polynomials satisfying a $4$-th order differential equation are constructed.
