Charge-state control of carbon-related optical absorption in AlN

Sub-bandgap optical absorption in AlN between 2 eV and 4 eV is widely observed, but its microscopic origin remains contested. Using photo-induced electron paramagnetic resonance (photo-EPR) and optical absorption spectroscopy on the same samples, we demonstrate a correlation between this absorption band and the neutral charge state of substitutional carbon on the nitrogen site (C$_N$). Hybrid functional calculations of the optical absorption spectra show that a transition involving C$_N$ and the valence band occurs near 3.3 eV, which agrees well with a peak identified within the measured optical absorption between 2 eV and 4 eV. This conclusion requires the combined ability to manipulate the charge state of carbon using photo-EPR and to use first-principles calculations of the absorption line shape that account for the dispersion of the valence band and the energy dependence of the optical matrix elements.

Video-rate broadband longwave IR dual-comb spectroscopy with 240,000 comb-mode resolved data points

We report molecular detection using dual frequency-comb spectroscopy with highly coherent broadband (6.6-11.4 {\m}m) long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) combs. The combs were produced via intra-pulse difference frequency generation (IDFG) in ZGP crystals using sub-three-cycle (20 fs) driving pulses from mode-locked Cr:ZnS lasers at the central wavelength of 2.4 {\m}m). Real-time and up to video rate (0.1-12 s per spectrum) acquisition of molecular spectra with some 240,000 comb-mode-resolved data points spaced by 80 MHz and referenced to a Rb clock with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) >300 has been demonstrated. The key to achieving such a high rate of massive spectral data acquisition is a low phase and intensity noise of the LWIR combs and excellent mutual coherence. The high SNR was also facilitated by the high (7.5%) IDFG conversion efficiency resulting in an average LWIR comb power of 300 mW per channel.

Resonant noninear refraction of 4-5 $μ$m light in CO and CO$_2$ gas

The resonant nonlinear refraction of 4-5 $μ$m light in CO and CO$_2$ gas at a peak intensity of 15 MW/cm$^2$ was demonstrated using time- and frequency-resolved measurements of self-focusing and self-defocusing. The nonlinearity of these molecular gases exhibits intensity-dependent sign reversals and a < 4 ns response time. A change from self-focusing to self-defocusing or vice-versa was observed to occur for Rabi frequencies that are comparable to the collisional linewidth. A density matrix model for the nonlinear susceptibility of a strongly driven two-level system provides a qualitative explanation for these results.
