The smallest matroids with no large independent flat

We show that a simple rank-$r$ matroid with no $(t+1)$-element independent flat has at least as many elements as the matroid $M_{r,t}$ defined as the direct sum of $t$ binary projective geometries whose ranks pairwise differ by at most $1$. We also show for $r \ge 2t$ that $M_{r,t}$ is the unique example for which equality holds.

Obstructions for partitioning into forests and outerplanar graphs

For a class $\mathcal C$ of graphs, we define $\mathcal C$-edge-brittleness of a graph $G$ as the minimum $\ell$ such that the vertex set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets inducing a subgraph in $\mathcal C$ and there are $\ell$ edges having ends in distinct parts. We characterize classes of graphs having bounded $\mathcal C$-edge-brittleness for a class $\mathcal C$ of forests or a class $\mathcal C$ of graphs with no $K_4\setminus e$ topological minors in terms of forbidden obstructions. We also define $\mathcal C$-vertex-brittleness of a graph $G$ as the minimum $\ell$ such that the edge set of $G$ can be partitioned into sets inducing a subgraph in $\mathcal C$ and there are $\ell$ vertices incident with edges in distinct parts. We characterize classes of graphs having bounded $\mathcal C$-vertex-brittleness for a class $\mathcal C$ of forests or a class $\mathcal C$ of outerplanar graphs in terms of forbidden obstructions. We also investigate the relations between the new parameters and the edit distance.

Densities of minor-closed graph classes are rational

For a graph class $\mathcal{F}$, let $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a graph in $\mathcal{F}$ on $n$ vertices. We show that for every proper minor-closed graph class $\mathcal{F}$ the function $ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n) - Δn$ is eventually periodic, where $Δ= \lim_{n \to \infty} ex_{\mathcal{F}}(n)/n$ is the limiting density of $\mathcal{F}$. This confirms a special case of a conjecture by Geelen, Gerards and Whittle. In particular, the limiting density of every proper minor-closed graph class is rational, which answers a question of Eppstein. As a major step in the proof we show that every proper minor-closed graph class contains a subclass of bounded pathwidth with the same limiting density, confirming a conjecture of the second author. Finally, we investigate the set of limiting densities of classes of graphs closed under taking topological minors.

The inducibility of oriented stars

We consider the problem of maximizing the number of induced copies of an oriented star $S_{k,\ell}$ in digraphs of given size, where the center of the star has out-degree $k$ and in-degree $\ell$. The case $k\ell=0$ was solved by Huang. Here, we asymptotically solve it for all other oriented stars with at least seven vertices.

Typical structure of hereditary graph families. I. Apex-free families

A family of graphs $\mathcal{F}$ is hereditary if $\mathcal{F}$ is closed under isomorphism and taking induced subgraphs. The speed of $\mathcal{F}$ is the sequence $\{|\mathcal{F}^n|\}_{n \in \mathbb{N}}$, where $\mathcal{F}^n$ denotes the set of graphs in $\mathcal{F}$ with the vertex set $[n]$. Alon, Balogh, Bollobás and Morris [The structure of almost all graphs in a hereditary property, JCTB 2011] gave a rough description of typical graphs in a hereditary family and used it to show for every proper hereditary family $\mathcal{F}$ there exist $\varepsilon>0$ and an integer $l \geq 1$ such that $$|\mathcal{F}^n| = 2^{(1-1/l)n^2/2+o(n^{2-\varepsilon})}.$$ The main result of this paper gives a more precise description of typical structure for a restricted class of hereditary families. As a consequence we characterize hereditary families with the speed just above the threshold $2^{(1-1/l)n^2/2}$, generalizing a result of Balogh and Butterfield [Excluding induced subgraphs: Critical graphs, RSA 2011].

Typical structure of hereditary graph families. II. Exotic examples

A graph $G$ is $H$-free if it does not contain an induced subgraph isomorphic to $H$. The study of the typical structure of $H$-free graphs was initiated by Erdős, Kleitman and Rothschild, who have shown that almost all $C_3$-free graphs are bipartite. Since then the typical structure of $H$-free graphs has been determined for several families of graphs $H$, including complete graphs, trees and cycles. Recently, Reed and Scott proposed a conjectural description of the typical structure of $H$-free graphs for all graphs $H$, which extends all previously known results in the area. We construct an infinite family of graphs for which the Reed-Scott conjecture fails, and use the methods we developed in the prequel paper to describe the typical structure of $H$-free graphs for graphs $H$ in this family. Using similar techniques, we construct an infinite family of graphs $H$ for which the maximum size of a homogenous set in a typical $H$-free graph is sublinear in the number of vertices, answering a question of Loebl et al. and Kang et al.

Breaking the degeneracy barrier for coloring graphs with no $K_t$ minor

In 1943, Hadwiger conjectured that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable for every $t\geq 1$. In the 1980s, Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor has average degree $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ and hence is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. We show that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$, making the first improvement on the order of magnitude of the Kostochka-Thomason bound.

Counterexamples to a conjecture of Harris on Hall ratio

The Hall ratio of a graph $G$ is the maximum value of $v(H) / α(H)$ taken over all non-null subgraphs $H$ of $G$. For any graph, the Hall ratio is a lower-bound on its fractional chromatic number. In this note, we present various constructions of graphs whose fractional chromatic number grows much faster than their Hall ratio. This refutes a conjecture of Harris.

Connectivity and choosability of graphs with no $K_t$ minor

In 1943, Hadwiger conjectured that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable for every $t\ge 1$. While Hadwiger's conjecture does not hold for list-coloring, the linear weakening is conjectured to be true. In the 1980s, Kostochka and Thomason independently proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor has average degree $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$ and thus is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-list-colorable. Recently, the authors and Song proved that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> \frac 1 4$. Here, we build on that result to show that every graph with no $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-list-colorable for every $β> \frac 1 4$. Our main new tool is an upper bound on the number of vertices in highly connected $K_t$-minor-free graphs: We prove that for every $β> \frac 1 4$, every $Ω(t(\log t)^β)$-connected graph with no $K_t$ minor has $O(t (\log t)^{7/4})$ vertices.

A lower bound on the average degree forcing a minor

We show that for sufficiently large $d$ and for $t\geq d+1$, there is a graph $G$ with average degree $(1-\varepsilon)λt \sqrt{\ln d}$ such that almost every graph $H$ with $t$ vertices and average degree $d$ is not a minor of $G$, where $λ=0.63817\dots$ is an explicitly defined constant. This generalises analogous results for complete graphs by Thomason (2001) and for general dense graphs by Myers and Thomason (2005). It also shows that an upper bound for sparse graphs by Reed and Wood (2016) is best possible up to a constant factor.

Sublinear separators in intersection graphs of convex shapes

We give a natural sufficient condition for an intersection graph of compact convex sets in R^d to have a balanced separator of sublinear size. This condition generalizes several previous results on sublinear separators in intersection graphs. Furthermore, the argument used to prove the existence of sublinear separators is based on a connection with generalized coloring numbers which has not been previously explored in geometric settings.

A new upper bound on the chromatic number of graphs with no odd $K_t$ minor

Gerards and Seymour conjectured that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $(t-1)$-colorable. This is a strengthening of the famous Hadwiger's Conjecture. Geelen et al. proved that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t\sqrt{\log t})$-colorable. Using the methods the present authors and Postle recently developed for coloring graphs with no $K_t$ minor, we make the first improvement on this bound by showing that every graph with no odd $K_t$ minor is $O(t(\log t)^β)$-colorable for every $β> 1/4$.

A distribution on triples with maximum entropy marginal

We construct an $S_3$-symmetric probability distribution on $\{(a,b,c) \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}^3 \: : \: a+b+c =n \}$ such that its marginal achieves the maximum entropy among all probability distributions on $\{0,1,\ldots,n\}$ with mean $n/3$. Existence of such a distribution verifies a conjecture of Kleinberg, Sawin and Speyer, which is motivated by the study of sum-free sets.

Non-planar extensions of subdivisions of planar graphs

Almost $4$-connectivity is a weakening of $4$-connectivity which allows for vertices of degree three. In this paper we prove the following theorem. Let $G$ be an almost $4$-connected triangle-free planar graph, and let $H$ be an almost $4$-connected non-planar graph such that $H$ has a subgraph isomorphic to a subdivision of $G$. Then there exists a graph $G'$ such that $G'$ is isomorphic to a minor of $H$, and either (i) $G'=G+uv$ for some vertices $u,v\in V(G)$ such that no facial cycle of $G$ contains both $u$ and $v$, or (ii) $G'=G+u_1v_1+u_2v_2$ for some distinct vertices $u_1,u_2,v_1,v_2\in V(G)$ such that $u_1,u_2,v_1,v_2$ appear on some facial cycle of $G$ in the order listed. This is a lemma to be used in other papers. In fact, we prove a more general theorem, where we relax the connectivity assumptions, do not assume that $G$ is planar, and consider subdivisions rather than minors. Instead of face boundaries we work with a collection of cycles that cover every edge twice and have pairwise connected intersection. Finally, we prove a version of this result that applies when $G\backslash X$ is planar for some set $X\subseteq V(G)$ of size at most $k$, but $H\backslash Y$ is non-planar for every set $Y\subseteq V(H)$ of size at most $k$.

Asymptotic Density of Graphs Excluding Disconnected Minors

For a graph $H$, let $$c_{\infty}(H)= \lim_{n \to \infty}\max\frac{|E(G)|}{n},$$ where the maximum is taken over all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices not containing $H$ as a minor. Thus $c_{\infty}(H)$ is the asymptotic maximum density of graphs not containing $H$ as a minor. Employing a structural lemma due to Eppstein, we prove new upper bounds on $c_{\infty}(H)$ for disconnected graphs $H$. In particular, we determine $c_{\infty}(H)$ whenever $H$ is union of cycles. Finally, we investigate the behaviour of $c_\infty(sK_r)$ for fixed $r$, where $sK_r$ denotes the union of $s$ disjoint copies of the complete graph on $r$ vertices. Improving on a result of Thomason, we show that $$c_\infty(sK_r)=s(r-1)-1 \mathrm{\; for \;} s =Ω\left(\frac{\log{r}}{\log\log{r}}\right),$$ and $$c_\infty(sK_r)>s(r-1)-1 \mathrm{\; for \;} s ={o}\left(\frac{\log{r}}{\log\log{r}}\right).$$

Treewidth of graphs with balanced separations

We prove that if every subgraph of a graph $G$ has a balanced separation of order at most $a$ then $G$ has treewidth at most $15a$. This establishes a linear dependence between the treewidth and the separation number.

List coloring with requests

Let G be a graph with a list assignment L. Suppose a preferred color is given for some of the vertices; how many of these preferences can be respected when L-coloring G? We explore several natural questions arising in this context, and propose directions for further research.
