Attractor of Smale-Williams type in autonomous distributed system

We consider an autonomous system of partial differential equations for one-dimensional distributed medium with periodic boundary conditions. Dynamics in time consists of alternating birth and death of patterns with spatial phases transformed from one stage of activity to another by the doubly expanding circle map. So, attractor in the Poincaré section is uniformly hyperbolic, a kind of Smale-Williams solenoid. Finite-dimensional models are derived as ordinary differential equations for amplitudes of spatial Fourier modes (the 5D and 7D models). Correspondence of the reduced models to the original system is demonstrated numerically. Computational verification of the hyperbolicity criterion is performed for the reduced models: the distribution of angles of intersection for stable and unstable manifolds on the attractor is separated from zero, i.e. the touches are excluded. The considered example gives a partial justification to the old hopes that chaotic behavior of autonomous distributed systems may be associated with uniformly hyperbolic attractors.

About Landau-Hopf scenario in a system of coupled self-oscillators

The conditions are discussed for which an ensemble of interacting oscillators may demonstrate the Landau-Hopf scenario of successive birth of multi-frequency quasi-periodic motions. A model is proposed that is a network of five globally coupled oscillators characterized by controlled degree of activation of individual oscillators. Illustrations are given for successive birth of tori of increasing dimension via quasi-periodic Hopf bifurcations.

Hyperbolic chaos at blinking coupling of noisy oscillators

We study an ensemble of identical noisy phase oscillators with a blinking mean-field coupling, where one-cluster and two-cluster synchronous states alternate. In the thermodynamic limit the population is described by a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. We show that the dynamics of the order parameters demonstrates hyperbolic chaos. The chaoticity manifests itself in phases of the complex mean field, which obey a strongly chaotic Bernoulli map. Hyperbolicity is confirmed by numerical tests based on the calculations of relevant invariant Lyapunov vectors and Lyapunov exponents. We show how the chaotic dynamics of the phases is slightly smeared by finite-size fluctuations.

Hyperbolic Chaos of Turing Patterns

We consider time evolution of Turing patterns in an extended system governed by an equation of the Swift-Hohenberg type, where due to an external periodic parameter modulation long-wave and short-wave patterns with length scales related as 1:3 emerge in succession. We show theoretically and demonstrate numerically that the spatial phases of the patterns, being observed stroboscopically, are governed by an expanding circle map, so that the corresponding chaos of Turing patterns is hyperbolic, associated with a strange attractor of the Smale-Williams solenoid type. This chaos is shown to be robust with respect to variations of parameters and boundary conditions.

A "saddle-node" bifurcation scenario for birth or destruction of a Smale-Williams solenoid

Formation or destruction of hyperbolic chaotic attractor under parameter variation is considered with an example represented by Smale--Williams solenoid in stroboscopic Poincaré map of two alternately excited non-autonomous van der Pol oscillators. The transition occupies a narrow but finite parameter interval and progresses in such way that periodic orbits constituting a "skeleton" of the attractor undergo saddle-node bifurcation events involving partner orbits from the attractor and from a non-attracting invariant set, which forms together with its stable manifold a basin boundary of the attractor.

Electronic circuits manifesting hyperbolic chaos and their simulation with software package Multisim

We consider several electronic circuits, which represent dynamical systems with hyperbolic chaotic attractors of Smale-Williams type, and demonstrate results of their simulation using the software package NI Multisim 10. The developed approach is useful as an intermediate step of constructing real electronic devices manifesting structurally stable hyperbolic chaos applicable e.g. in systems of secure communication, noise radar, for cryptographic systems and random number generators. This is also of methodological interest for training students who specialize in radio-physics and nonlinear dynamics in the design and analysis of systems with complex dynamics using examples close to practical applications.

Collective Phase Chaos in the Dynamics of Interacting Oscillator Ensembles

We study chaotic behavior of order parameters in two coupled ensembles of self-sustained oscillators. Coupling within each of these ensembles is switched on and off alternately, while the mutual interaction between these two subsystems is arranged through quadratic nonlinear coupling. We show numerically that in the course of alternating Kuramoto transitions to synchrony and back to asynchrony, the exchange of excitations between two subpopulations proceeds in such a way that their collective phases are governed by an expanding circle map similar to the Bernoulli map. We perform the Lyapunov analysis of the dynamics and discuss finite-size effects.

Attractor of Smale - Williams type in an autonomous time-delay system

We propose an example of smooth autonomous system governed by differential delay equation manifesting chaotic dynamics apparently associated with hyperbolic attractor of Smale - Williams type. The general idea is to depart from a system generating successive pulses of oscillations, each of which gives rise to the next one with transformation of the phase in accordance with chaotic Bernoulli map. From mathematical point of view, it is an infinite-dimensional system due to presence of the time delay. Nevertheless, the material we present gives a foundation to assert that the model delivers an example of a small-dimensional hyperbolic strange attractor, embedded in the infinite-dimensional phase space.

Violation of hyperbolicity in a diffusive medium with local hyperbolic attractor

Departing from a system of two non-autonomous amplitude equations, demonstrating hyperbolic chaotic dynamics, we construct a 1D medium as ensemble of such local elements introducing spatial coupling via diffusion. When the length of the medium is small, all spatial cells oscillate synchronously, reproducing the local hyperbolic dynamics. This regime is characterized by a single positive Lyapunov exponent. The hyperbolicity survives when the system gets larger in length so that the second Lyapunov exponent passes zero, and the oscillations become inhomogeneous in space. However, at a point where the third Lyapunov exponent becomes positive, some bifurcation occurs that results in violation of the hyperbolicity due to the emergence of one-dimensional intersections of contracting and expanding tangent subspaces along trajectories on the attractor. Further growth of the length results in two-dimensional intersections of expanding and contracting subspaces that we classify as a stronger type of the violation. Beyond of the point of the hyperbolicity loss, the system demonstrates an extensive spatiotemporal chaos typical for extended chaotic systems: when the length of the system increases the Kaplan-Yorke dimension, the number of positive Lyapunov exponents, and the upper estimate for Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy grow linearly, while the Lyapunov spectrum tends to a limiting curve.

A non-autonomous flow system with Plykin type attractor

A non-autonomous flow system is introduced with an attractor of Plykin type that may serve as a base for elaboration of real systems and devices demonstrating the structurally stable chaotic dynamics. The starting point is a map on a two-dimensional sphere, consisting of four stages of continuous geometrically evident transformations. The computations indicate that in a certain parameter range the map has a uniformly hyperbolic attractor. It may be represented on a plane by means of a stereographic projection. Accounting structural stability, a modification of the model is undertaken to obtain a set of two non-autonomous differential equations of the first order with smooth coefficients. As follows from computations, it has the Plykin type attractor in the Poincaré cross-section.

Plykin-like attractor in non-autonomous coupled oscillators

A system of two coupled non-autonomous oscillators is considered. Dynamics of complex amplitudes is governed by differential equations with periodic piecewise continuous dependence of the coefficients on time. The Poincaré map is derived explicitly. With exclusion of the overall phase, on which the evolution of other variables does not depend, the Poincaré map is reduced to 3D mapping. It possesses an attractor of Plykin type located on an invariant sphere. Computer verification of the cone criterion confirms the hyperbolic nature of the attractor in the 3D map. Some results of numerical studies of the dynamics for the coupled oscillators are presented, including the attractor portraits, Lyapunov exponents, and the power spectral density.

The effect of noise on a hyperbolic strange attractor in the system of two coupled van der Pol oscillators

We study the effect of noise for a physically realizable flow system with a hyperbolic chaotic attractor of the Smale - Williams type in the Poincare cross-section [S.P. Kuznetsov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 2005, 144101]. It is shown numerically that slightly varying the initial conditions on the attractor one can obtain a uniform approximation of a noisy orbit by the trajectory of the system without noise, that is called as the "shadowing" trajectory. We propose an algorithm for locating the shadowing trajectories in the system under consideration. Using this algorithm, we show that the mean distance between a noisy orbit and the approximating one does not depend essentially on the length of the time interval of observation, but only on the noise intensity. This dependance is nearly linear in a wide interval of the intensities of noise. It is found out that for weak noise the Lyapunov exponents do not depend noticeably on the noise intensity. However, in the case of a strong noise the largest Lyapunov exponent decreases and even becomes negative indicating the suppression of chaos by the external noise.

Hyperbolic attractor of Smale-Williams type in a system of two coupled non-autonomous amplitude equations

Recently, a system with uniformly hyperbolic attractor of Smale-Williams type has been suggested [Kuznetsov, Phys. Rev. Lett., 95, 144101, 2005]. This system consists of two coupled non-autonomous van der Pol oscillators and admits simple physical realization. In present paper we introduce amplitude equations for this system and prove that the attractor of the system of amplitude equations is also uniformly hyperbolic. Also we represent qualitative illustrations as well as quantitative characteristics of a chaotic dynamics on this attractor.

Hyperbolic attractor in a system of coupled non-autonomous van der Pol oscillators: Numerical test for expanding and contracting cones

We present numerical verification of hyperbolic nature for chaotic attractor in a system of two coupled non-autonomous van der Pol oscillators (Kuznetsov, Phys. Rev. Lett., 95, 144101, 2005). At certain parameter values, in the four-dimensional phase space of the Poincare map a toroidal domain (a direct product of a circle and a three-dimensional ball) is determined, which is mapped into itself and contains the attractor we analyze. In accordance with the computations, in this absorbing domain the conditions of hyperbolicity are valid, which are formulated in terms of contracting and expanding cones in the tangent spaces (the vector spaces of the small state perturbations).

Dynamics of Small Perturbations of Orbits on a Torus in a Quasiperiodically Forced 2D Dissipative Map

We consider the dynamics of small perturbations of stable two-frequency quasiperiodic orbits on an attracting torus in the quasiperiodically forced Henon map. Such dynamics consists in an exponential decay of the radial component and in a complex behaviour of the angle component. This behaviour may be two- or three-frequency quasiperiodicity, or it may be irregular. In the latter case a graphic image of the dynamics of the perturbation angle is a fractal object, namely a strange nonchaotic attractor, which appears in auxiliary map for the angle component. Therefore, we claim that stable trajectories may approach the attracting torus either in a regular or in an irregular way. We show that the transition from quasiperiodic dynamics to chaos in the model system is preceded by the appearance of an irregular behaviour in the approach of the perturbed quasiperiodic trajectories to the smooth attracting torus. We also demonstrate a link between the evolution operator of the perturbation angle and a quasiperiodically forced circle mapping of a special form and with a Harper equation with quasiperiodic potential.

An example of physical system with hyperbolic attractor of Smale - Williams type

A simple and transparent example of a non-autonomous flow system, with hyperbolic strange attractor is suggested. The system is constructed on a basis of two coupled van der Pol oscillators, the characteristic frequencies differ twice, and the parameters controlling generation in both oscillators undergo a slow periodic counter-phase variation in time. In terms of stroboscopic Poincaré section, the respective four-dimensional mapping has a hyperbolic strange attractor of Smale - Williams type. Qualitative reasoning and quantitative data of numerical computations are presented and discussed, e.g. Lyapunov exponents and their parameter dependencies. A special test for hyperbolicity based on statistical analysis of distributions of angles between stable and unstable subspaces of a chaotic trajectory has been performed. Perspectives of further comparative studies of hyperbolic and non-hyperbolic chaotic dynamics in physical aspect are outlined.

Torus Fractalization and Intermittency

The bifurcation transition is studied for the onset of intermittency analogous to the Pomeau-Manneville mechanism of type-I, but generalized for the presence of a quasiperiodic external force. The analysis is concentrated on the torus-fractalization (TF) critical point that occurs at some critical amplitude of driving. (At smaller amplitudes the bifurcation corresponds to a collision and subsequent disappearance of two smooth invariant curves, and at larger amplitudes it is a touch of fractal attractor and repeller at some set of exceptional points, without coincidence.) For the TF critical point, renormalization group (RG) analysis is developed. For the golden mean rotation number a nontrivial fixed-point solution of the RG equation is found in a class of fractional-linear functions with coefficients depending on the phase variable. Universal constants are computed responsible for scaling in phase space ($α=2.890053...$ and $β=-1.618034...$) and in parameter space ($δ_1=3.134272...$ and $δ_2=1.618034...$). An analogy with the Harper equation is outlined, which reveals important peculiarities of the transition. For amplitudes of driving less than the critical value the transition leads (in the presence of an appropriate re-injection mechanism) to intermittent chaotic regimes; in the supercritical case it gives rise to a strange nonchaotic attractor.
