On Bäcklund transformations preserving the Darboux integrability of hyperbolic equations

This paper deals with two kinds of Bäcklund transformations for scalar hyperbolic partial differential equations. We prove that both these types of transformations map solutions of a Darboux integrable equation into solutions of, generally speaking, another but also Darboux integrable equation. The latter fact can be used to roughly check the completeness of a list of Darboux integrable equations. To illustrate this, we apply the above transformations to several equations from a well-known list of Darboux integrable equations and, as a result, obtain a Darboux integrable equation which is absent in this list, but is already known at present. As a generalization of the last equation, we construct a family of Darboux integrable equations that is parametrized by three arbitrary functions, each of which depends on two arguments. This family is probably new.

Formal Integrals and Noether Operators of Nonlinear Hyperbolic Partial Differential Systems Admitting a Rich Set of Symmetries

The paper is devoted to hyperbolic (generally speaking, non-Lagrangian and nonlinear) partial differential systems possessing a full set of differential operators that map any function of one independent variable into a symmetry of the corresponding system. We demonstrate that a system has the above property if and only if this system admits a full set of formal integrals (i.e., differential operators which map symmetries into integrals of the system). As a consequence, such systems possess both direct and inverse Noether operators (in the terminology of a work by B. Fuchssteiner and A.S. Fokas who have used these terms for operators that map cosymmetries into symmetries and perform transformations in the opposite direction). Systems admitting Noether operators are not exhausted by Euler-Lagrange systems and the systems with formal integrals. In particular, a hyperbolic system admits an inverse Noether operator if a differential substitution maps this system into a system possessing an inverse Noether operator.

Non-Point Invertible Transformations and Integrability of Partial Difference Equations

This article is devoted to the partial difference quad-graph equations that can be represented in the form $φ(u(i+1,j),u(i+1,j+1))=ψ(u(i,j),u(i,j+1))$, where the map $(w,z) \rightarrow (φ(w,z),ψ(w,z))$ is injective. The transformation $v(i,j)=φ(u(i,j),u(i,j+1))$ relates any of such equations to a quad-graph equation. It is proved that this transformation maps Darboux integrable equations of the above form into Darboux integrable equations again and decreases the orders of the transformed integrals by one in the $j$-direction. As an application of this fact, the Darboux integrable equations possessing integrals of the second order in the $j$-direction are described under an additional assumption. The transformation also maps symmetries of the original equations into symmetries of the transformed equations (i.e. preserves the integrability in the sense of the symmetry approach) and acts as a difference substitution for symmetries of a special form. The latter fact allows us to derive necessary conditions of Darboux integrability for the equations defined in the first sentence of the abstract.
