On the non-expansiveness of the geodesic flow on surfaces with cusps

We exhibit orbits of the geodesic flow on a hyperbolic surface with at least one cusp such that every tubular neighborhood contains uncountably many distinct geodesic flow orbits. The proof relies on new phenomena, namely the existence of strong stable sets in the dynamical sense that do not coincide with the stable horocycles. When the surface has finite volume, this phenomenon is typical.

Bellis strong stable sets on infinite hyperbolic surfaces

We provide a corrected proof of a theorem of A. Bellis on strong stable sets in the unit tangent bundle of certain hyperbolic surfaces. The theorem states that, for vectors whose geodesic rays encounter arbitrarily short closed geodesics, the strong stable set in the dynamical sense does not coincide with the associated horocyclic orbit. The proof is based on Bellis' idea of constructing geodesic rays that wind around infinitely many closed geodesics.

Rigidity of the unstable foliation

We establish a rigidity result for the unstable foliations of transitive Anosov flows on 3-manifolds: if the unstable foliations of two such flows are equivalent (that is, if there exists a homeomorphism mapping one foliation to the other), then the flows are topologically conjugate up to a constant change of time. This result partially generalizes earlier rigidity theorems for horocyclic flows on compact surfaces of negative curvature, originating in the work of Ratner. In that setting, it is known that equivalence of unstable foliations implies that the underlying surfaces are homothetic.

Topology of horocycles on geometrically finite nonpositively curved surfaces

We study the closure of horocycles on rank 1 nonpositively curved surfaces with finitely generated fundamental group. Each horocycle is closed or dense on a certain subset of the unit tangent bundle. In fact, we classify each half-horocycle in terms of the associated geodesic rays. We also determine the nonwandering set of the horocyclic flow and characterize the surfaces admitting a minimal set for this flow.

Unique ergodicity of the horocyclic flow on nonpositively curved surfaces

On the unit tangent bundle of a nonflat compact nonpositively curved surface, we prove that there is a unique probability Borel measure invariant by a horocyclic flow which gives full measure to the set of rank $1$ vectors recurrent by the geodesic flow. If we assume in addition that the surface has no flat strips, we show that the horocyclic flow is uniquely ergodic. These results are valid for any parametrization of the horocyclic flow.

Unique ergodicity of the horocycle flow of a higher genus compact surface with no conjugate points and continuous Green bundles

We show that the horocyclic flow of an orientable compact higher genus surface without conjugate points and with continuous Green bundles is uniquely ergodic. The result applies to nonflat nonpositively curved surfaces and generalizes a classical result of Furstenberg and Marcus in negative curvature. The proof relies on the definition of a uniformly expanding parametrization on the quotient by the strips of the surface.

Equidistribution of horospheres in nonpositive curvature

We study the ergodic properties of horospheres on rank 1 manifolds with non-positive curvature. We prove that the horospheres are equidistributed under the action of the geodesic flow towards the Bowen-Margulis measure, on a large class of manifolds. In the case of surfaces, we define a parametrization of the horocyclic flow on the set of horocycles containing a rank 1 vector that is recurrent under the action of the geodesic flow. We prove that the horocyclic flow in restriction to this set is uniquely ergodic. The results are valid for large classes of manifolds, including the compact ones.
