Non glassy ground-state in a long-range antiferromagnetic frustrated model in the hypercubic cell

We analize the statistical mechanics of a long-range antiferromagnetic model defined on a D-dimensional hypercube, both at zero and finite temperatures. The associated Hamiltonian is derived from a recently proposed complexity measure of Boolean functions, in the context of neural networks learning processes. We show that, depending of the value of D, the system either presents a low temperature antiferromagnetic stable phase or the global antiferromagnetic order disappears at any temperature. In the last case the ground state is an infinitely degenerated non-glassy one, composed by two equal size anti-aligned antiferromagnetic domains. We also present some results for the ferromagnetic version of the model.

Metastable states in ultrathin magnetic films

The equilibrium phase diagram of a two-dimensional Ising model with competing exchange and dipolar interactions is analyzed using a Monte Carlo simulation technique. We consider the low temperature region of the (delta,T) phase diagram (delta being the ratio between the strengths of the exchange and dipolar interactions) for the range of values of delta where striped phases with widths h=1 and h=2 are present. We show that the transition line between both phases is a first order one. We also show that, associated with the first order phase transition, there appear metastable states of the phase h=2 in the region where the phase h=1 is the thermodynamically stable one and viceversa.

Dynamics of ferromagnetic spherical spin models with power law interactions: exact solution

We solve the Langevin dynamics of d-dimensional ferromagnetic spherical models with interactions that decay with distance as r^-(d+sigma). The long time dynamics of correlations and responses are studied in the different dynamical regimes and the validity of fluctuation-dissipation relations (or its violation) are shown. In particular, we show that the fluctuation-dissipation ratio X(t+t_w,t_w) is assymptotically a function only of the waiting time t_w in the aging regime and that X -> 0 as t_w -> oo . The results are valid in any finite dimension d and for 0 < sigma < 2, where short range behaviour is recovered. We also solve the T=0 Cahn-Hilliard dynamics of this model (conserved order parameter). An analysis of the multiscaling behaviour of the autocorrelation function is presented.

Long-range effects in granular avalanching

We introduce a model for granular flow in a one-dimensional rice pile that incorporates rolling effects through a long-range rolling probability for the individual rice grains proportional to $r^{-ρ}$, $r$ being the distance traveled by a grain in a single topling event. The exponent $ρ$ controls the average rolling distance. We have shown that the crossover from power law to stretched exponential behaviors observed experimentally in the granular dynamics of rice piles can be well described as a long-range effect resulting from a change in the transport properties of individual grains. We showed that stretched exponential avalanche distributions can be associated with a long-range regime for $1<ρ<2$ where the average rolling distance grows as a power law with the system size, while power law distributions are associated with a short range regime for $ρ>2$, where the average rolling distance is independent of the system size.

Self-organized criticality in a model of biological evolution with long range interactions

In this work we study the effects of introducing long range interactions in the Bak-Sneppen (BS) model of biological evolution. We analyze a recebtly propopsed version of the BS model where the interactions decay as r^{-alpha}; in this way the first nearest neighbors model is recovered in the limit alpha -> infinity, and the random neighbors version for alpha=0. We study the space and time correlations and analize how the critical behavior of the system changes with the parameter alpha. We also study the sensibility to initial conditions of the model using the spreading of damage technique. We found that the system displays several distinct critical regimes as alpha is varied from alpha=0 to alpha -> infinity.

Violation of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem in a Two-Dimensional Ising Model with Dipolar Interactions

The violation of the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT) in a two-dimensional Ising model with both ferromagnetic exchange and antiferromagnetic dipolar interactions is established and investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. Through the computation of the autocorrelation C(t+t_w,t_w) and the integrated response (susceptibility) functions we obtain the FDT violation factor X(t+t_w,t_w) for different values of the temperature, the waiting time t_w and the quotient delta=J_0/J_d, J_0 and J_d being the strength of exchange and dipolar interactions respectively. For positive values of delta this system develops a striped phase at low temperatures, in which the non-equilibrium dynamics presents two different regimes. Our results show that such different regimes are not reflected in the FDT violation factor, where X goes always to zero for high values of t_w in the aging regime, a result that appears in domain growth processes in non-frustrated ordered systems.

Aging in a Two-Dimensional Ising Model with Dipolar Interactions

Aging in a two-dimensional Ising spin model with both ferromagnetic exchange and antiferromagnetic dipolar interactions is established and investigated via Monte Carlo simulations. The behaviour of the autocorrelation function $C(t,t_w)$ is analyzed for different values of the temperature, the waiting time $t_w$ and the quotient $δ=J_0/J_d$, $J_0$ and $J_d$ being the strength of exchange and dipolar interactions respectively. Different behaviours are encountered for $C(t,t_w)$ at low temperatures as $δ$ is varied. Our results show that, depending on the value of $δ$, the dynamics of this non-disordered model is consistent either with a slow domain dynamics characteristic of ferromagnets or with an activated scenario, like that proposed for spin glasses.

Phase diagram of a stochastic cellular automaton with long-range interactions

We introduce a stochastic cellular automaton with power law spatial decaying long-range interactions. In some limit this model reduces to the Domany-Kinzel cellular automaton. Monte Carlo and mean field calculations of the phase diagram of the model for different ranges of interactions are compared.

Sensitivity to Initial Conditions and Nonextensivity in Biological Evolution

We consider biological evolution as described within the Bak and Sneppen 1993 model. We exhibit, at the self-organized critical state, a power-law sensitivity to the initial conditions, calculate the associated exponent, and relate it to the recently introduced nonextensive thermostatistics. The scenario which here emerges without tuning strongly reminds that of the tuned onset of chaos in say logistic-like onedimensional maps. We also calculate the dynamical exponent z.
