Quantum particles that behave as free classical particles

The existence of non-vanishing Bohm potentials, in the Madelung-Bohm version of the Schrödinger equation, allows for the construction of particular solutions for states of quantum particles interacting with non-trivial external potentials that propagate as free classical particles. Such solutions are constructed with phases which satisfy the classical Hamilton-Jacobi for free particles and whose probability densities propagate with constant velocity, as free classical particles do.

Casimir force induced by electromagnetic wave polarization in Kerr, Gödel and Bianchi--I spacetimes

Electromagnetic waves propagation on either rotating or anisotropic spacetime backgrounds (such as Kerr and Gödel metrics, or Bianchi-I metric) produce a reduction of the magnitude of Casimir forces between plates. These curved spacetimes behave as chiral or birefringent materials producing dispersion of electromagnetic waves, in such a way that right- and left-circularly polarized light waves propagate with different phase velocities. Results are explicitly calculated for discussed cases. The difference on the wavevectors of the two polarized electromagnetic waves produces an abatement of a Casimir force which depends on the interaction between the polarization of electromagnetic waves and the properties of the spacetime.

Dual wavefunctions in two-dimensional quantum mechanics

It is shown that the Schrodinger equation for a large family of pairs of two-dimensional quantum potentials possess wavefuctions for which the amplitude and the phase are interchangeable, producing two different solutions which are dual to each other. This is a property of solutions with vanishing Bohm potential. These solutions can be extended to three-dimensional systems. We explicitly calculate dual solutions for physical systems, such as the repulsive harmonic oscillator and the two-dimensional hydrogen atom. These dual wavefunctions are also solutions of an analogue optical system in the eikonal limit. In this case, the potential is related to the refractive index, allowing the study of this two-dimensional dual wavefunction solutions with an optical (analogue) system.

Unification of massless field equations solutions for any spin

A unification of Klein--Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell, Rarita--Schwinger and Einstein equations exact solutions (for the massless fields cases) is presented. The method is based on writing all of the relevant dynamical fields in terms of products and derivatives of pre--potential functions, which satisfy d'Alambert equation. The coupled equations satisfied by the pre--potentials are non-linear. Remarkably, there are particular solutions of (gradient) orthogonal pre--potentials that satisfy the usual wave equation which may be used to construct {\it{exact non--trivial solutions to Klein--Gordon, Dirac, Maxwell, Rarita--Schwinger and (linearized and full) Einstein equations}}, thus giving rise to a unification of the solutions of all massless field equations for any spin. Some solutions written in terms of orthogonal pre--potentials are presented. Relations of this method to previously developed ones, as well as to other subjects in physics are pointed out.

Bohm potential is real and its effects are measurable

We analyze Bohm's potential effects both in the realms of Quantum Mechanics and Optics, as well as in the study of other physical phenomena described in terms of classical and quantum wave equations. We approach this subject by using theoretical arguments as well as experimental evidence. We find that the effects produced by Bohm's potential are both theoretically responsible for the early success of Quantum Mechanics correctly describing atomic and nuclear phenomena and, more recently, by confirming surprising accelerating behavior of free waves and particles experimentally, for instance.

Bohm potential for the time dependent harmonic oscillator

In the Madelung-Bohm approach to quantum mechanics, we consider a (time dependent) phase that depends quadratically on position and show that it leads to a Bohm potential that corresponds to a time dependent harmonic oscillator, provided the time dependent term in the phase obeys an Ermakov equation.

Propagation of light in linear and quadratic GRIN media: The Bohm potential

It is shown that field propagation in linear and quadratic gradient-index (GRIN) media obeys the same rules of free propagation in the sense that a field propagating in free space has a (mathematical) form that may be {\it exported} to those particular GRIN media. The Bohm potential is introduced in order to explain the reason of such behavior: it changes the dynamics by modifying the original potential. The concrete cases of two different initials conditions for each potential are analyzed.

Phenomenological dynamics of COVID-19 pandemic: meta-analysis for adjustment parameters

We present a phenomenological procedure of dealing with the COVID--19 data provided by government health agencies of eleven different countries. Instead of using the (exact or approximate) solutions to the SIR (or other) model(s) to fit the data by adjusting the time--independent parameters included in those models, we introduce dynamical parameters whose time--dependence may be phenomenologically obtained by adequately extrapolating a chosen subset of the daily provided data. This phenomenological approach works extremely well to properly adjust the number of infected (and removed) individuals in time, for the countries we consider. Besides, it can handle the sub--epidemic events that some countries may experience. In this way, we obtain the evolution of the pandemic without using any a priori model based on differential equations.

Geometrical Unification of Gravitation and Electromagnetism

A theory which achieves a complete geometrical unification of gravitation and electromagnetism (GUGE) is presented. This new theory is based on a recent proposal of proper time redefinition that leads to the construction of a Riemann metric, which naturally unifies gravity and electromagnetism. The 5--dimensional Riemann metric which arises looks exactly the same as the one postulated in the Kaluza-Klein (KK) 5-dimensional theory. Nevertheless, there are deep differences between GUGE and KK. The GUGE metric is deduced while the KK metric is postulated. In the GUGE field theory there is no need to impose either of the so called "cylinder" or "curling of coordinates" conditions, because they emerge as direct consequences of the construction of the GUGE metric. The GUGE field equations are fully equivalent to Einstein--Maxwell equations, while KK field equations are not. The GUGE 5--dimensional (geodesic) equations are equivalent to the 4--dimensional (non--geodesic) equations for a charged particle moving in the presence of gravitational and electromagnetic fields, unlike the KK 5--dimensional (geodesic) equations which are not and, in addition, yield non--gauge covariant geodesic equations. No extra scalar field appears in GUGE. The physical interpretation of the fifth dimension and of the role of the extra field in KK (internal coordinate in GUGE) are totally different in both approaches. Finally, GUGE results include electric charge conservation, electric charge quantization and electric charge contribution to the energy of charged particles even in the absence of electromagnetic fields, which implies (the observed fact) that there are no massless electrically charged particles in Nature, unlike the prevailing treatments of KK theories.

Correspondence between dark energy quantum cosmology and Maxwell equations

A Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmology with dark energy can be modelled using a quintessence field. That system is equivalent to a relativistic particle moving on a two-dimensional conformal spacetime. When the quintessence behaves as a free massless scalar field in a Universe with cosmological constant, the quantized version of that theory can lead to a Supersymmetric Majorana quantum cosmology. The purpose of this work is to show that such quantum cosmological model correspond to the Maxwell equations for electromagnetic waves propagating in a medium with specific values for its relative permittivity and relative permeability. The form of those media parameters are calculated, implying that a Majorana quantum cosmology can be studied in an analogue electromagnetic system.

Non--geodesic circular motion of massive spinning test bodies

Recent interest on studying possible violations of the Equivalence Principle has led to the development of space satellite missions testing it for bodies moving on circular orbits around Earth. This experiment establishes that the validity of the Equivalence Principle is independent of the composition of bodies. However, the internal degrees of freedom of the bodies (such as spin) were not taken into account. In this work, it is shown exactly that the circular orbit motion of test bodies does present a departure from geodesic motion when spin effects are not negligible. Using a Lagrangian theory for spinning massive bodies, an exact solution for their circular motion is found showing that the non--geodesic behavior manifests through different tangential velocities of the test bodies, depending on the orientation of its spin with respect to the total angular momentum of the satellite. Besides, for circular orbits, spinning test bodies present no tangential acceleration. We estimate the difference of the two possible tangential velocities for the case of circular motion of spinning test bodies orbiting Earth.

Electromagnetic redshift in anisotropic cosmologies

The redshift of light is calculated for an anisotropic cosmological spacetime. Two different approaches are considered. In the first one, electromagnetic waves are modeled using the geometrical optics (high--frequency) approximation. This approach considers light rays following null geodesics, being equivalent to the motion followed by pointlike spinless massless particles. It is shown that the redshift for this case depends, in general, on the direction of propagation, and is dispersive (wavelength dependent) for light emitted from different points of an extended object. In the second approach electromagnetic waves are studied using the exact form of Maxwell equations, finding that redshift has dependence on the direction of propagation as well as on the wave polarization. The electromagnetic waves are dispersive and depend on the anisotropic temporal evolution. In this last case, redshifts may become dispersive depending on the relative direction between the light ray propagation vector and the anisotropy axes. The relation of these results with a possible violation of the Equivalence Principle are discussed. In general, both results are set in the context of recent astrophysical redshift observations for anisotropic cosmologies, and new ways of determining redshifts are suggested.

A differential geometry approach to asymmetric transmission of light

In the last ten years, the technology of differential geometry, ubiquitous in gravitational physics, has found its place in the field of optics. It has been successfully used in the design of optical metamaterials, through a technique now known as "transformation optics". This method, however, only applies for the particular class of metamaterials known as impedance matched, that is, materials whose electric permittivity is equal to their magnetic permeability. In that case, the material may be described by a spacetime metric. In the present work we will introduce a generalization of the geometric methods of transformation optics to situations in which the material is not impedance matched. In such situation, the material -or more precisely, its constitutive tensor- will not be described by a metric only. We bring in a second tensor, with the local symmetries of the Weyl tensor, the "$W$-tensor". In the geometric optics approximation we show how the properties of the $W$-tensor are related to the asymmetric transmission of the material. We apply this feature into the design of a particularly interesting set of asymmetric materials. These materials are birefringent when light rays approach the material in a given direction, but behave just like vacuum when the rays have the opposite direction with the appropriate polarization (or, in some cases, independently of the polarization).

Do electromagnetic waves always propagate along null geodesics?

We find exact solutions to Maxwell equations written in terms of four-vector potentials in non--rotating, as well as in Gödel and Kerr spacetimes. We show that Maxwell equations can be reduced to two uncoupled second-order differential equations for combinations of the components of the four-vector potential. Exact electromagnetic waves solutions are written on given gravitational field backgrounds where they evolve. We find that in non--rotating spherical symmetric spacetimes, electromagnetic waves travel along null geodesics. However, electromagnetic waves on Gödel and Kerr spacetimes do not exhibit that behavior.

Quantization of the Universe as a Dirac Particle: Geometrical Unification of Gravitation, Dark Energy and Multiverses

A Friedmann--Robertson--Walker Universe is studied with a dark energy component represented by a quintessence field. The Lagrangian for this system, hereafter called the Friedmann--Robertson--Walker--quintessence (FRWq) system, is presented. It is shown that the classical Lagrangian reproduces the usual two (second order) dynamical equations for the radius of the Universe and for the quintessence scalar field as well as a (first order) constraint equation. It is noted that the quintessence field (dark energy) is related with the tlaplon field (appearing on dynamical theories of spacetime torsion). Our approach naturally unifies gravity and dark energy, as it is obtained that the Lagrangian and the equations of motion are those of a relativistic particle moving on a two dimensional conformally flat spacetime, whereas the conformal metric factor is related to the dark energy scalar field potential. We proceed to quantize the system in three different schemes. First, we assume the Universe as a spinless particle (as it is common in literature), obtaining a quantum theory for a Universe described by the Klein--Gordon equation. Second, we push the quantization scheme further assuming the Universe as a Dirac particle, and therefore constructing its corresponding Dirac and the Majorana theories. With the different theories we calculate the expected values for the scale factor of the Universe. They depend on the type of quantization scheme used. The differences between the Dirac and Majorana schemes are highlighted. The implications of the different quantization procedures are discussed. Finally the possible consequences for a multiverse theory of the Dirac and Majorana quantized Universe are briefly considered.

Birefringent light propagation on anisotropic cosmological backgrounds

Exact electromagnetic wave solutions to Maxwell equations on anisotropic Bianchi I cosmological spacetime backgrounds are studied. The waves evolving on Bianchi I spacetimes exhibit birefringence (associated to linear polarization) and dispersion. The particular case of a vacuum--dominated anisotropic Universe, which reproduces a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe (for late times) while for earlier times it matches a Kasner Universe, is studied. The electromagnetic waves do not, in general, follow null geodesics. This produces a modification of the cosmological redshift, which is now dependent on light polarization and dispersion and its non-null geodesic behavior. New results presented here may help to tackle some issues related to the "horizon" problem.

New non-linear modified massless Klein--Gordon equation

The massless Klein--Gordon equation on arbitrary curved backgrounds allows for solutions which develop "tails" inside the light cone and, therefore, do not strictly follow null geodesics as discovered by DeWitt and Brehme almost sixty years ago. A modification of the massless Klein--Gordon equation is presented which always exhibits null geodesic propagation of waves on arbitrary curved spacetimes. This new equation is derived from a Lagrangian which exhibits current--current interaction. Its non--linearity is due to a self--coupling term which is related to the quantum mechanical Bohm potential.

Spinning particles coupled to gravity

Recent experimental work has determined that free falling $^{87}$Rb atoms on Earth, with vertically aligned spins, follow geodesics, thus apparently ruling out spin--gravitation interactions. It is showed that while some spinning matter models coupled to gravitation referenced to in that work seem to be ruled out by the experiment, those same experimental results confirm theoretical results derived from a Lagrangian description of spinning particles coupled to gravity constructed over forty years ago. A proposal to carry out (similar but) different experiments which will help to test the validity of the Universality of Free Fall as opposed to the correctness of the aforementioned Lagrangian theory, is presented.
