Analysis of the nonlinear dynamics of a chirping-frequency Alfv\'en mode in a Tokamak equilibrium

Chirping Alfv\'{e}n modes are considered as potentially harmful in burning Tokamak plasmas. In this paper, the nonlinear evolution of a single-toroidal-number chirping mode is analysed by numerical particle simulation. This analysis can be simplified if the different resonant phase-space structures can be investigated as isolated ones. This can be done adopting a coordinate system that includes two constants of motion. In our simulations, we adopt as constants of motion, the magnetic momentum and the initial particle coordinates. For each resonant structure, a density-flattening region is formed around the respective resonance radius, with radial width that increases as the mode amplitude grows. It is delimited by two large negative density gradients, drifting inward and outward. With constant mode frequency, this density flattening would be responsible for the exhausting of the drive when large negative density gradients leave the resonance region. The frequency chirping, however, causes the resonance radius and the resonance region to drift inward. This drift delays the moment in which the inner density gradient reaches the inner boundary of the resonance region. On the other side, the island reconstitutes around the new resonance radius; as a consequence, the large negative density gradient further moves inward. This process continues as long as it allows to keep the large gradient within the resonance region. When this is no longer possible, the resonant structure ceases to be effective in driving the mode. To further grow, the mode has to tap a different resonant structure, possibly making use of additional frequency variations.

Dynamics of reversed shear Alfvén eigenmode and energetic particles during current ramp-up

Hybrid MHD-gyrokinetic code simulations are used to investigate the dynamics of frequency sweeping reversed shear Alfvén eigenmode (RSAE) strongly driven by energetic particles (EPs) during plasma current ramp-up in a conventional tokamak configuration. A series of weakly reversed shear equilibria representing time slices of long timescale MHD equilibrium evolution is considered, where the self-consistent RSAE-EP resonant interactions on the short timescale are analyzed in detail. Both linear and nonlinear RSAE dynamics are shown to be subject to the non-perturbative effect of EPs by maximizing wave-EP power transfer. In linear stage, EPs induce evident mode structure and frequency shifts; meanwhile, RSAE saturates by radial decoupling with resonant EPs due to weak magnetic shear, and gives rise to global EP convective transport and non-adiabatic frequency chirping. The spatiotemporal scales of phase space wave-EP interactions are characterized by the perpendicular wavelength and wave-particle trapping time. The simulations provide insights into general as well as specific features of RSAE spectra and EP transport from experimental observations, and illustrate the fundamental physics of wave-EP resonant interaction with the interplay of magnetic geometry, plasma non-uniformity and non-perturbative EPs.

Implementation of energy transfer technique in ORB5 to study collisionless wave-particle interactions in phase-space

A new diagnostic has been developed to investigate the wave-particle interaction in the phase-space in gyrokinetic particle-in-cell codes. Based on the projection of energy transfer terms onto the velocity space, the technique has been implemented and tested in the global code ORB5 and it gives an opportunity to localise velocity domains of maximum wave-plasma energy exchange for separate species. Moreover, contribution of different species and resonances can be estimated as well, by integrating the energy transfer terms in corresponding velocity domains. This Mode-Plasma-Resonance (MPR) diagnostic has been applied to study the dynamics of the Energetic-particle-induced Geodesic Acoustic Modes (EGAMs) in an ASDEX Upgrade shot, by analysing the influence of different species on the mode time evolution. Since the equations on which the diagnostic is based, are valid in both linear and nonlinear cases, this approach can be applied to study nonlinear plasma effects. As a possible future application, the technique can be used, for instance, to investigate the nonlinear EGAM frequency chirping, or the plasma heating due to the damping of the EGAMs.

Nonlinear dynamics of Shear Alfvén fluctuations in Divertor Tokamak Test facility plasmas

Following the analysis on linear spectra of shear Alfvén fluctuations excited by energetic particles (EPs) in the Divertor Tokamak Test (DTT) facility plasmas [T. Wang et al., Phys. Plasmas 25, 062509 (2018)], in this work, nonlinear dynamics of the corresponding mode saturation and the fluctuation induced EP transport is studied by hybrid magnetohydrodynamic-gyrokinetic simulations. For the reversed shear Alfvén eigenmode driven by magnetically trapped EP precession resonance in the central core region of DTT plasmas, the saturation is mainly due to radial decoupling of resonant trapped EPs. Consistent with the wave-EP resonance structure, EP transport occurs in a similar scale to the mode width. On the other hand, passing EP transport is analyzed in detail for toroidal Alfvén eigenmode in the outer core region, with mode drive from both passing and trapped EPs. It is shown that passing EPs experience only weak redistributions in the weakly unstable case; and the transport extends to meso-scale diffusion in the strongly unstable case, due to orbit stochasticity induced by resonance overlap. Here, weakly/strongly unstable regime is determined by Chirikov condition for resonance overlap. This work then further illuminates rich and diverse nonlinear EP dynamics related to burning plasma studies, and the capability of DTT to address these key physics.

Nonlinear Energetic Particle Transport in the Presence of Multiple Alfvenic Waves in ITER

This work presents the results of a multi mode ITER study on Toroidal Alfven Eigenmodes, using the nonlinear hybrid HAGIS-LIGKA model. It is found that main conclusions from earlier studies of ASDEX Upgrade discharges can be transferred to the ITER scenario: global, nonlinear effects are crucial for the evolution of the multi mode scenario. This work focuses on the ITER 15 MA baseline scenario with with a safety factor at the magnetic axis of $q_0 =$ 0.986. The least damped eigenmodes of the system are identified with the gyrokinetic, non-perturbative LIGKA solver, concerning mode structure, frequency and damping. Taking into account all weakly damped modes that can be identified linearly, nonlinear simulations with HAGIS reveal strong multi mode behavior: while in some parameter range, quasi-linear estimates turn out to be reasonable approximations for the nonlinearly relaxed energetic particle profile, under certain conditions low-n TAE branches can be excited. As a consequence, not only grow amplitudes of all modes to (up to orders of magnitude) higher values compared to the single mode cases but also, strong redistribution is triggered in the outer radial area between $ρ_\mathrm{pol} =$ 0.6 and 0.85, far above quasi-linear estimates.

Nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures and energetic particle physics in fusion plasmas

A general theoretical framework for investigating nonlinear dynamics of phase space zonal structures is presented in this work. It is then, more specifically, applied to the limit where the nonlinear evolution time scale is smaller or comparable to the wave-particle trapping period. In this limit, both theoretical and numerical simulation studies show that non-adiabatic frequency chirping and phase locking could lead to secular resonant particle transport on meso- or macro-scales. The interplay between mode structures and resonant particles then provides the crucial ingredient to properly understand and analyze the nonlinear dynamics of Alfvén wave instabilities excited by non-perturbative energetic particles in burning fusion plasmas. Analogies with autoresonance in nonlinear dynamics and with superradiance in free electron lasers are also briefly discussed.
