Chiral symmetry breaking and quark confinement in the nilpotency expansion of QCD

We apply to lattice QCD a bosonization method previously developed in which dynamical bosons are generated by time-dependent Bogoliubov transformations. The transformed action can be studied by an expansion in the inverse of the nilpotency index, which is the number of fermionic states in the structure function of composite bosons. When this number diverges the model is solved by the saddle point method which has a variational interpretation. We give a stationary covariant solution for a background matter field whose fluctuations describe mesons. In the saddle point approximations live fermionic quasiparticles with quark quantum numbers which are confined, in the sense that they propagate only in pointlike color singlets. Conditions for chiral symmetry breaking are determined, to be studied numerically, and a derivation of mesons-nucleons action is outlined.

Geometrical Properties of Two-Dimensional Interacting Self-Avoiding Walks at the Theta-Point

We perform a Monte Carlo simulation of two-dimensional N-step interacting self-avoiding walks at the theta point, with lengths up to N=3200. We compute the critical exponents, verifying the Coulomb-gas predictions, the theta-point temperature T_theta = 1.4986(11), and several invariant size ratios. Then, we focus on the geometrical features of the walks, computing the instantaneous shape ratios, the average asphericity, and the end-to-end distribution function. For the latter quantity, we verify in detail the theoretical predictions for its small- and large-distance behavior.

Absence of sign problem in the (saddle point approximation of the) nilpotency expansion of QCD at finite chemical potential

We have developed a method to derive the (approximate) quark contribution to the fermion free energy of QCD on a lattice, at finite temperature and chemical potential, with Kogut-Susskind fermions in the flavor basis. We show here the expression at zero temperature. This result has been obtained at the lowest order of the nilpotency expansion. At this order the well known "sign problem" does not arise and the quark contribution to the action can be used as a statistical weight in the Monte Carlo simulations.

Conservation laws for strings in the Abelian Sandpile Model

The Abelian Sandpile generates complex and beautiful patterns and seems to display allometry. On the plane, beyond patches, patterns periodic in both dimensions, we remark the presence of structures periodic in one dimension, that we call strings. We classify completely their constituents in terms of their principal periodic vector k, that we call momentum. We derive a simple relation between the momentum of a string and its density of particles, E, which is reminiscent of a dispersion relation, E=k^2. Strings interact: they can merge and split and within these processes momentum is conserved. We reveal the role of the modular group SL(2,Z) behind these laws.

Phase transition in the spanning-hyperforest model on complete hypergraphs

By using our novel Grassmann formulation we study the phase transition of the spanning-hyperforest model of the k-uniform complete hypergraph for any k>= 2. The case k=2 reduces to the spanning-forest model on the complete graph. Different k are studied at once by using a microcanonical ensemble in which the number of hyperforests is fixed. The low-temperature phase is characterized by the appearance of a giant hyperforest. The phase transition occurs when the number of hyperforests is a fraction (k-1)/k of the total number of vertices. The behaviour at criticality is also studied by means of the coalescence of two saddle points. As the Grassmann formulation exhibits a global supersymmetry we show that the phase transition is second order and is associated to supersymmetry breaking and we explore the pure thermodynamical phase at low temperature by introducing an explicit breaking field.

Spanning Forests on Random Planar Lattices

The generating function for spanning forests on a lattice is related to the q-state Potts model in a certain q -> 0 limit, and extends the analogous notion for spanning trees, or dense self-avoiding branched polymers. Recent works have found a combinatorial perturbative equivalence also with the (quadratic action) O(n) model in the limit n -> -1, the expansion parameter t counting the number of components in the forest. We give a random-matrix formulation of this model on the ensemble of degree-k random planar lattices. For k = 3, a correspondence is found with the Kostov solution of the loop-gas problem, which arise as a reformulation of the (logarithmic action) O(n) model, at n = -2. Then, we show how to perform an expansion around the t = 0 theory. In the thermodynamic limit, at any order in t we have a finite sum of finite-dimensional Cauchy integrals. The leading contribution comes from a peculiar class of terms, for which a resummation can be performed exactly.

A randomized polynomial-time algorithm for the Spanning Hypertree Problem on 3-uniform hypergraphs

Consider the problem of determining whether there exists a spanning hypertree in a given k-uniform hypergraph. This problem is trivially in P for k=2, and is NP-complete for k>= 4, whereas for k=3, there exists a polynomial-time algorithm based on Lovasz' theory of polymatroid matching. Here we give a completely different, randomized polynomial-time algorithm in the case k=3. The main ingredients are a Pfaffian formula by Vaintrob and one of the authors (G.M.) for a polynomial that enumerates spanning hypertrees with some signs, and a lemma on the number of roots of polynomials over a finite field.

Exact sampling of corrugated surfaces

We discuss an algorithm for the exact sampling of vectors v in [0,1]^N satisfying a set of pairwise difference inequalities. Applications include the exact sampling of skew Young Tableaux, of configurations in the Bead Model, and of corrugated surfaces on a graph, that is random landscapes in which at each vertex corresponds a local maximum or minimum. As an example, we numerically evaluate with high-precision the number of corrugated surfaces on the square lattice. After an extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit, controlled by an exact formula, we put into evidence a discrepancy with previous numerical results.

Explicit characterization of the identity configuration in an Abelian Sandpile Model

Since the work of Creutz, identifying the group identities for the Abelian Sandpile Model (ASM) on a given lattice is a puzzling issue: on rectangular portions of Z^2 complex quasi-self-similar structures arise. We study the ASM on the square lattice, in different geometries, and a variant with directed edges. Cylinders, through their extra symmetry, allow an easy determination of the identity, which is a homogeneous function. The directed variant on square geometry shows a remarkable exact structure, asymptotically self-similar.

Bogoliubov transformations and fermion condensates in lattice field theories

We apply generalized Bogoliubov transformations to the transfer matrix of relativistic field theories regularized on a lattice. We derive the conditions these transformations must satisfy to factorize the transfer matrix into two terms which propagate fermions and antifermions separately, and we solve the relative equations under some conditions. We relate these equations to the saddle point approximation of a recent bosonization method and to the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations which separate positive from negative energy states in the Dirac Hamiltonian.

Third virial coefficient for 4-arm and 6-arm star polymers

We discuss the computation of the third virial coefficient in polymer systems, focusing on an additional contribution absent in the case of monoatomic fluids. We determine the interpenetration ratio and several quantities that involve the third virial coefficient for star polymers with 4 and 6 arms in the good-solvent regime, in the limit of a large degree of polymerization.

Hyperforests on the Complete Hypergraph by Grassmann Integral Representation

We study the generating function of rooted and unrooted hyperforests in a general complete hypergraph with n vertices by using a novel Grassmann representation of their generating functions. We show that this new approach encodes the known results about the exponential generating functions for the different number of vertices. We consider also some applications as counting hyperforests in the k-uniform complete hypergraph and the one complete in hyperedges of all dimensions. Some general feature of the asymptotic regimes for large number of connected components is discussed.

Two-parameter model predictions and theta-point crossover for linear-polymer solutions

We consider the first few virial coefficients of the osmotic pressure, the radius of gyration, the hydrodynamic radius, and the end-to-end distance for a monodisperse polymer solution. We determine the corresponding two-parameter model functions which parametrize the crossover between the good-solvent and the ideal-chain behavior. These results allow us to predict the osmotic pressure and the polymer size in the dilute regime in a large temperature region above the theta-point.

Grassmann Integral Representation for Spanning Hyperforests

Given a hypergraph G, we introduce a Grassmann algebra over the vertex set, and show that a class of Grassmann integrals permits an expansion in terms of spanning hyperforests. Special cases provide the generating functions for rooted and unrooted spanning (hyper)forests and spanning (hyper)trees. All these results are generalizations of Kirchhoff's matrix-tree theorem. Furthermore, we show that the class of integrals describing unrooted spanning (hyper)forests is induced by a theory with an underlying OSP(1|2) supersymmetry.

Renormalization flow for unrooted forests on a triangular lattice

We compute in small temperature expansion the two-loop renormalization constants and the three-loop coefficient of the beta-function, that is the first non-universal term, for the sigma-model with O(N) invariance on the triangular lattice at N=-1. The partition function of the corresponding Grassmann theory is, for negative temperature, the generating function of unrooted forests on such a lattice, where the temperature acts as a chemical potential for the number of trees in the forest. To evaluate Feynman diagrams we extend the coordinate space method to the triangular lattice.

Composite boson dominance in relativistic field theories

We apply a new bosonization technique to relativistic field theories of fermions whose partition function is dominated by bosonic composites, and derive the effective action for these bosons. The derivation respects all symmetries, including gauge invariance, with the exception of Euclidean invariance which must be checked a posteriori. We use a lattice regularization which should make applications to gauge theories easier. We test the method on a fermion field theory with quartic interaction in the limit when the number of flavours N_f is large, and show that it reproduces the exact results in the bosonic sector, namely condensation of a compositeboson with the right mass which breaks the discrete chiral invariance of the model. Moreover we determine the structure function of the condensed composite, whose spatial part turns out to be identical to that of the Cooper pairs of the BCS model of superconductivity.

Polymer size in dilute solutions in the good-solvent regime

We determine the density expansion of the radius of gyration, of the hydrodynamic radius, and of the end-to-end distance for a monodisperse polymer solution in good-solvent conditions. We consider the scaling limit (large degree of polymerization), including the leading scaling corrections. Using the expected large-concentration behavior, we extrapolate these low-density expansions outside the dilute regime, obtaining a prediction for the radii for any concentration in the semidilute region. For the radius of gyration, comparison with field-theoretical predictions shows that the relative error should be at most 5% in the limit of very large polymer concentrations.
