Kazdan-Warner obstructions for a 4$th-$order boundary problem

We derive Kazdan-Warner type identities for the boundary problem of prescribing nonconstant interior $Q$ curvature and boundary $T$ curvature on the upper hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^4_+$ by a conformal change of the standard metric. Using the natural variational formulation and conformal variations generated by boundary-preserving conformal vector fields, we obtain nontrivial integral obstructions to solvability.

Conformal metrics on the four-dimensional half sphere with symmetric $Q$ and $T$ curvatures

In this paper, we address the problem of prescribing non-constant $Q$ and boundary $T$ curvatures on the upper hemisphere $\mathbb{S}^4_+\subset \mathbb{R}^5$, via a conformal change of the background metric. This is equivalent to solve a fourth-order non-linear elliptic boundary value problem with a third-order non-linear equation and homogeneous Neumann conditions at the boundary. The problem admits a Mean-field type variational formulation, similar to the one obtained by Cruz-Blázquez and Ruiz for a related problem in two dimensions, with the associated energy functional being bounded from below but, in general, not coercive. By imposing symmetry conditions, we are able to prove the existence of minimizers, especially when $Q,T\geq 0$. To the best of our knowledge, these are the first existence results obtained for this setting.

The role of the boundary in the existence of blow-up solutions for a doubly critical elliptic problem

In this paper we consider a doubly critical nonlinear elliptic problem with Neumann boundary conditions. The existence of blow-up solutions for this problem is related to the blow-up analysis of the classical geometric problem of prescribing negative scalar curvature $K=-1$ on a domain of $\R^n$ and mean curvature $H=D(n(n-1))^{-1/2}$, for some constant $D>1$, on its boundary, via a conformal change of the metric. Assuming that $n\geq6$ and $D>\sqrt{(n+1)/(n-1)}$, we establish the existence of a positive solution which concentrates around an elliptic boundary point which is a nondegenerate critical point of the original mean curvature.

Prescribing nearly constant curvatures on balls

In this paper we address two boundary cases of the classical Kazdan-Warner problem. More precisely, we consider the problem of prescribing the Gaussian and boundary geodesic curvature on a disk of R^2, and the scalar and mean curvature on a ball in higher dimensions, via a conformal change of the metric. We deal with the case of negative interior curvature and positive boundary curvature. Using a Ljapunov-Schmidt procedure, we obtain new existence results when the prescribed functions are close to constants.

Qualitative Properties of Singular Solutions to the Fractional Yamabe Problem

In this paper we are interested in the qualitative properties of the solutions to the fractional Yamabe problem in $\mathbb{R}^n$ which present an isolated singularity. In particular, we prove that the Morse index of any such solution is infinity. The proof uses a Emden Fowler type transformation, so that we can pass to a nonlocal 1D problem posed in $\mathbb{R}$.

Positive Blow-up Solutions for a Linearly Perturbed Boundary Yamabe Problem

We consider the problem of prescribing the scalar and boundary mean curvatures via conformal deformation of the metric on a $n-$ dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We deal with the case of negative scalar curvature $K$ and boundary mean curvature $H$ of arbitrary sign which are non-constant and $\mathfrak D_n=\sqrt{n(n-1)}{|K|}^{-1/2}>1$ at some point of the boundary. It is known that this problem admits a positive mountain pass solution if $n=3$, while no existence results are known for $n\geq 4$. We will consider a perturbation of the geometric problem and show the existence of a positive solution which blows-up at a boundary point which is critical for both prescribed curvatures.

Non-degeneracy of critical points of the squared norm of the second fundamental form on manifolds with minimal boundary

Let $(M,\bar g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold with minimal boundary such that the second fundamental form is nowhere vanishing on $\partial M$. We show that for a generic Riemannian metric $\bar g$, the squared norm of the second fundamental form is a Morse function, i.e. all its critical points are non-degenerate. We show that the generality of this property holds when we restrict ourselves to the conformal class of the initial metric on $M$.

Clustering phenomena in low dimensions for a boundary Yamabe problem

We consider the classical geometric problem of prescribing the scalar and boundary mean curvatures via conformal deformation of the metric on a $n-$dimensional compact Riemannian manifold. We deal with the case of negative scalar curvature and positive boundary mean curvature. It is known that if $n=3$ all the blow-up points are isolated and simple. In this work we prove that, for a linear perturbation, this is not true anymore in low dimensions $4\leq n\leq 7$. In particular, we construct a solution with a clustering blow-up boundary point (i.e. non-isolated), which is non-umbilic and is a local minimizer of the norm of the trace-free second fundamental form of the boundary.
