Tensorial Constraints for Commuting Endomorphisms of the Generalized Tangent Bundle

In this paper we consider families of mutually commuting endomorphisms of the generalized tangent bundle. We identify natural tensorial constraints extending the notion of a generalized Kähler structure to endomorphisms that are not necessarily generalized almost complex structures. These tensors form ideals whose generators we explicitly construct and study using Gröbner basis techniques.

Geometric vertex decomposition and liaison for toric ideals of graphs

The geometric vertex decomposability property for polynomial ideals is an ideal-theoretic generalization of the vertex decomposability property for simplicial complexes. Indeed, a homogeneous geometrically vertex decomposable ideal is radical and Cohen-Macaulay, and is in the Gorenstein liaison class of a complete intersection (glicci). In this paper, we initiate an investigation into when the toric ideal $I_G$ of a finite simple graph $G$ is geometrically vertex decomposable. We first show how geometric vertex decomposability behaves under tensor products, which allows us to restrict to connected graphs. We then describe a graph operation that preserves geometric vertex decomposability, thus allowing us to build many graphs whose corresponding toric ideals are geometrically vertex decomposable. Using work of Constantinescu and Gorla, we prove that toric ideals of bipartite graphs are geometrically vertex decomposable. We also propose a conjecture that all toric ideals of graphs with a square-free degeneration with respect to a lexicographic order are geometrically vertex decomposable. As evidence, we prove the conjecture in the case that the universal Gröbner basis of $I_G$ is a set of quadratic binomials. We also prove that some other families of graphs have the property that $I_G$ is glicci.

Quantum-Resistant Cryptography via Universal Gröbner Bases

In this article, we explore the use of universal Gröbner bases in public-key cryptography by proposing a key establishment protocol that is resistant to quantum attacks. By utilizing a universal Gröbner basis $\mathcal{U}_I$ of a polynomial ideal $I$ as a private key, this protocol leverages the computational disparity between generating the universal Gröbner basis needed for decryption compared with the single Gröbner basis used for encryption. The security of the system lies in the difficulty of directly computing the Gröbner fan of $I$ required to construct $\mathcal{U}_I$. We provide an analysis of the security of the protocol and the complexity of its various parameters. Additionally, we provide efficient ways to recursively generate $\mathcal{U}_I$ for toric ideals of graphs with techniques which are also of independent interest to the study of these ideals.

A note on toric ideals of graphs and Knutson-Miller-Yong decompositions

We use a Gröbner basis technique first introduced by Knutson, Miller and Yong to study the interplay between properties of a graph $G$ and algebraic properties of the toric ideal that it defines. We first recover a well-known height formula for the toric ideal of a graph $I_G$ and demonstrate an algebraic property that can detect when a graph deletion is bipartite. We also bound the chromatic number $χ(G)$ using information about an initial ideal of $I_G$.

Gröbner geometry for regular nilpotent Hessenberg Schubert cells

A regular nilpotent Hessenberg Schubert cell is the intersection of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety with a Schubert cell. In this paper, we describe a set of minimal generators of the defining ideal of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg Schubert cell in the type $A$ setting. We show that these minimal generators are a Gröbner basis for an appropriate lexicographic monomial order. As a consequence, we obtain a new computational-algebraic proof, in type $A$, of Tymoczko's result that regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties are paved by affine spaces. In addition, we prove that these defining ideals are complete intersections, are geometrically vertex decomposable, and compute their Hilbert series. We also produce a Frobenius splitting of each Schubert cell that compatibly splits all of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg Schubert cells contained in it. This work builds on, and extends, work of the second and third author on defining ideals of intersections of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties with the (open) Schubert cell associated to the Bruhat-longest permutation.

A note on the shifted Courant-Nijenhuis torsion

We characterize the vanishing of the shifted Courant-Nijenhuis torsion as the strongest tensorial integrability condition that can be imposed on a skew-symmetric endomorphism of the generalized tangent bundle.

Splittings for symbolic powers of edge ideals of complete graphs

In this paper we study the $s$-th symbolic powers of the edge ideals of complete graphs. In particular, we provide a criterion for finding an Eliahou-Kervaire splitting on these ideals, and use the splitting to provide a description for the graded Betti numbers. We also discuss the symbolic powers and graded Betti numbers of edge ideals of parallelizations of finite simple graphs.

Geometric vertex decomposition, Gröbner bases, and Frobenius splittings for regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties

We initiate a study of the Gröbner geometry of local defining ideals of Hessenberg varieties by studying the special case of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties in Lie type A, and focusing on the affine coordinate chart on $\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n) \cong GL_n(\mathbb{C})/B$ corresponding to the longest element $w_0$ of the Weyl group $S_n$ of $GL_n(\mathbb{C})$. Our main results are as follows. Let $h$ be an indecomposable Hessenberg function. We prove that the local defining ideal $I_{w_0,h}$ in the $w_0$-chart of the regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\mathrm{Hess}(\mathsf{N},h)$ associated to $h$ has a Gröbner basis with respect to a suitably chosen monomial order. Our Gröbner basis consists of a collection $\{f^{w_0}_{k,\ell}\}$ of generators of $I_{w_0,h}$ obtained by Abe, DeDieu, Galetto, and the second author. We also prove that $I_{w_0,h}$ is geometrically vertex decomposable in the sense of Klein and Rajchgot (building on work of Knutson, Miller, and Yong). We give two distinct proofs of the above results. We make this unconventional choice of exposition because our first proof introduces and utilizes a notion of a triangular complete intersection which is of independent interest, while our second proof using liaison theory is more likely to be generalizable to the general $w$-charts for $w \neq w_0$. Finally, using our Gröbner analysis of the $f^{w_0}_{k,\ell}$ above and for $p>0$ any prime, we construct an explicit Frobenius splitting of the $w_0$-chart of $\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ which simultaneously compatibly splits all the local defining ideals of $I_{w_0,h}$, as $h$ ranges over the set of indecomposable Hessenberg functions. This last result is a local Hessenberg analogue of a classical result known for $\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ and the collection of Schubert and opposite Schubert varieties in $\mathrm{Flags}(\mathbb{C}^n)$.

Hadamard Products and Binomial Ideals

We study the Hadamard product of two varieties $V$ and $W$, with particular attention to the situation when one or both of $V$ and $W$ is a binomial variety. The main result of this paper shows that when $V$ and $W$ are both binomial varieties, and the binomials that define $V$ and $W$ have the same binomial exponents, then the defining equations of $V \star W$ can be computed explicitly and directly from the defining equations of $V$ and $W$. This result recovers known results about Hadamard products of binomial hypersurfaces and toric varieties. Moreover, as an application of our main result, we describe a relationship between the Hadamard product of the toric ideal $I_G$ of a graph $G$ and the toric ideal $I_H$ of a subgraph $H$ of $G$. We also derive results about algebraic invariants of Hadamard products: assuming $V$ and $W$ are binomial with the same exponents, we show that $\text{deg}(V\star W) = \text{deg}(V)=\text{deg}(W)$ and $\dim(V\star W) = \dim(V)=\dim(W)$. Finally, given any (not necessarily binomial) projective variety $V$ and a point $p \in \mathbb{P}^n \setminus \mathbb{V}(x_0x_1\cdots x_n)$, subject to some additional minor hypotheses, we find an explicit binomial variety that describes all the points $q$ that satisfy $p \star V = q\star V$.

Degenerations of Pascal Lines

Let $\mathcal{K}$ denote a nonsingular conic in the complex projective plane. Pascal's theorem says that, given six distinct points $A,B,C,D,E,F$ on $\mathcal{K}$, the three intersection points $AE \cap BF, AD \cap CF, BD \cap CE$ are collinear. The line containing them is called the Pascal line of the sextuple. However, this construction may fail when some of the six points come together. In this paper, we find the indeterminacy locus where the Pascal line is not well-defined and then use blow-ups along polydiagonals to define it. We analyse the geometry of Pascals in these degenerate cases. Finally we offer some remarks about the indeterminacy of other geometric elements in Pascal's hexagrammum mysticum.

The Tensor Rank Problem over the Quaternions

We provide a nontrivial bound on the rank of any tensor $T$ over the quaternions $\mathbb{H}$ in the $n_1\times n_2\times n_3$ cases where $2\leq n_i\leq 3$. We describe a decomposition of $T$ into $3$ simple tensors in the $2\times 2\times 2$ case. We also show that the upper bound is the best possible for some of the cases, and we provide various partial results involving tensor decompositions over $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{H}$.

On the Gorensteinization of Schubert Varieties via Boundary Divisors

We will describe a one-step "Gorensteinization" process for a Schubert variety by blowing-up along its boundary divisor. The local question involves Kazhdan-Lusztig varieties which can be degenerated to affine toric schemes defined using the Stanley-Reisner ideal of a subword complex. The blow-up along the boundary in this toric case is in fact Gorenstein. We show that there exists a degeneration of the blow-up of the Kazhdan-Lusztig variety to this Gorenstein scheme, allowing us to extend this result to Schubert varieties in general. The potential use of this one-step Gorensteinization to describe the non-Gorenstein locus of Schubert varieties is discussed, as well as the relationship between Gorensteinizations and the convergence of the Nash blow-up process in the toric case.

Strict Bott-Samelson Resolutions of Schubert Varieties

We explore the relationship between two desingularization techniques for Schubert varieties. The Bott-Samelson resolution is the more common of the two, but it fails to encompass many properties that Hironaka resolutions provide, in particular, being an isomorphism over the smooth locus. Using a computer search, a list of cases where Bott-Samelson resolutions having this "strictness" property is compiled for the $n=5,6$ cases. A conjecture based on these results is formulated and is subsequently verified for $n=7,8$. A comparison between Bott-Samelson resolutions and blow-ups is also provided.

Finite type multiple flag varieties of exceptional groups

Consider a simple complex Lie group $G$ acting diagonally on a triple flag variety $G/P_1\times G/P_2\times G/P_3$, where $P_i$ is parabolic subgroup of $G$. We provide an algorithm for systematically checking when this action has finitely many orbits. We then use this method to give a complete classification for when $G$ is of type $F_4$. The $E_6, E_7,$ and $E_8$ cases will be treated in a subsequent paper.

Desingularization by blowings-up avoiding simple normal crossings

It is shown that, for any reduced algebraic variety in characteristic zero, one can resolve all but simple normal crossings (snc) singularities by a finite sequence of blowings-up with smooth centres which, at every step, avoids points where the transformed variety together with the exceptional divisor has only snc singularities. The proof follows the philosophy of arXiv:1107.5595 that the desingularization invariant can be used together with natural geometric information to compute local normal forms of singularities.

On Oda's Strong Factorization Conjecture

The Oda's Strong Factorization Conjecture states that a proper birational map between smooth toric varieties can be decomposed as a sequence of smooth toric blowups followed by a sequence of smooth toric blowdowns. This article describes an algorithm that conjecturally constructs such a decomposition. Several reductions and simplifications of the algorithm are presented and some special cases of the conjecture are proved.
