An automated system to define the optimal operating settings of cryogenic calorimeters

Cryogenic macro-calorimeters instrumented with NTD thermistors have been developed for several decades. The choice of the optimal bias current is crucial for a proper operation of these detectors, both in terms of energy resolution and stability. In this paper we present a set of automatic measurements and analysis procedures for the characterization and optimization of the working configuration of the NTD thermistors. The presented procedures were developed for CUORE, an array of 988 cryogenic macro-calorimeters instrumented with NTD thermistors that has been taking data since 2017. These procedures made it possible to characterize a large number of detectors in a reliable way. They are suitable enough to be used also in other large arrays of cryogenic detectors, such as CUPID.

Final results of CALDER: Kinetic inductance light detectors to search for rare events

The next generation of bolometric experiments searching for rave events, in particular for the neutrino-less double beta decay, needs fast, high-sensitivity and easy-to-scale cryogenic light detectors. The CALDER project (2014-2020) developed a new technology for light detection at cryogenic temperature. In this paper we describe the achievements and the final prototype of this project, consisting of a $5\times5$ cm$^2$, 650 $μ$m thick silicon substrate coupled to a single kinetic inductance detector made of a three-layer aluminum-titanium-aluminum. The baseline energy resolution is 34$\pm$1(stat)$\pm$2(syst) eV RMS and the response time is 120 $μ$s. These features, along with the natural multiplexing capability of kinetic inductance detectors, meet the requirements of future large-scale experiments.

Future prospects for neutrinoless double-beta decay

The study of neutrinoless double-beta decay plays a fundamental role in the understanding of neutrino physics. Its observation would prove that neutrinos are Majorana particles and that lepton number is not conserved. Experimental searches demand detectors with a very large source mass and extremely low background. We report on planned future experimental searches and discuss their expected sensitivities.

A BGO scintillating bolometer for gamma and alpha spectroscopy

A 891 g BGO scintillating bolometer has been tested at 10 mK in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (Italy). The discrimination capability, the radio-purity of the compound and the main features of the crystal have been studied in order to demonstrate the excellent performances obtained by operating a scintillating bolometer in the field of gamma and alpha spectroscopy. The sensitivity of this detector in the study of extremely low surface contaminations has been investigated.

Lowering the energy threshold of large-mass bolometric detectors

Large-mass bolometers are used in particle physics experiments to search for rare processes. The energy threshold of such detectors plays a critical role in their capability to search for dark matter interactions and rare nuclear decays. We have developed a trigger and a pulse shape algorithm based on the matched filter technique which, when applied to data from test bolometers of the CUORE experiment, lowered the energy threshold from tens of keV to the few keV region. The detection efficiency is in excess of 80%, and nearly all nonphysical pulses are rejected.
