Cost of holographic path integrals

We consider proposals for the cost of holographic path integrals. Gravitational path integrals within finite radial cutoff surfaces have a precise map to path integrals in $T\bar T$ deformed holographic CFTs. In Nielsen's geometric formulation cost is the length of a not-necessarily-geodesic path in a metric space of operators. Our cost proposals differ from holographic state complexity proposals in that (1) the boundary dual is cost, a quantity that can be `optimised' to state complexity, (2) the set of proposals is large: all functions on all bulk subregions of any co-dimension which satisfy the physical properties of cost, and (3) the proposals are by construction UV-finite. The optimal path integral that prepares a given state is that with minimal cost, and cost proposals which reduce to the CV and CV2.0 complexity conjectures when the path integral is optimised are found, while bounded cost proposals based on gravitational action are not found. Related to our analysis of gravitational action-based proposals, we study bulk hypersurfaces with a constant intrinsic curvature of a specific value and give a Lorentzian version of the Gauss-Bonnet theorem valid in the presence of conical singularities.

Spacetime as a quantum circuit

We propose that finite cutoff regions of holographic spacetimes represent quantum circuits that map between boundary states at different times and Wilsonian cutoffs, and that the complexity of those quantum circuits is given by the gravitational action. The optimal circuit minimizes the gravitational action. This is a generalization of both the "complexity equals volume" conjecture to unoptimized circuits, and path integral optimization to finite cutoffs. Using tools from holographic $T\bar T$, we find that surfaces of constant scalar curvature play a special role in optimizing quantum circuits. We also find an interesting connection of our proposal to kinematic space, and discuss possible circuit representations and gate counting interpretations of the gravitational action.

Manifest electric-magnetic duality in linearized conformal gravity

We derive a manifestly duality-symmetric formulation of the action principle for conformal gravity linearized around Minkowski space-time. The analysis is performed in the Hamiltonian formulation, the fourth-order character of the equations of motion requiring the formal treatment of the three-dimensional metric perturbation and the extrinsic curvature as independent dynamical variables. The constraints are solved in terms of two symmetric potentials that are interpreted as a dual three-dimensional metric and a dual extrinsic curvature. The action principle can be written in terms of these four dynamical variables, duality acting as simultaneous rotations in the respective spaces spanned by the three-dimensional metrics and the extrinsic curvatures. A twisted self-duality formulation of the equations of motion is also provided.

Manifest gravitational duality near anti de Sitter space-time

We derive a manifestly duality-invariant formulation of the action principle for linearized gravity on anti de Sitter background. The analysis is based on the two-potential formalism, obtained upon resolution of the constraints in the Hamiltonian formulation. We discuss the relevance of our result in the context of holography.

Twisted self-duality for higher spin gauge fields and prepotentials

We show that the equations of motion for (free) integer higher spin gauge fields can be formulated as twisted self-duality conditions on the higher spin curvatures of the spin-$s$ field and its dual. We focus on the case of four spacetime dimensions, but formulate our results in a manner applicable to higher spacetime dimensions. The twisted self-duality conditions are redundant and we exhibit a non-redundant subset of conditions, which have the remarkable property to involve only first-order derivatives with respect to time. This non-redundant subset equates the electric field of the spin-$s$ field (which we define) to the magnetic field of its dual (which we also define), and vice versa. The non-redundant subset of twisted self-duality conditions involve the purely spatial components of the spin-$s$ field and its dual, and also the components of the fields with one zero index. One can get rid of these gauge components by taking the curl of the equations, which does not change their physical content. In this form, the twisted self-duality conditions can be derived from a variational principle that involves prepotentials, which are the higher spin generalizations of the prepotentials previously found in the spins 2 and 3 cases. The prepotentials have again the intriguing feature of possessing both higher spin diffeomorphism invariance and higher spin conformal geometry. The tools introduced in an earlier paper for handling higher spin conformal geometry turn out to be crucial for streamlining the analysis. In four spacetime dimensions where the electric and magnetic fields are tensor fields of the same type, the twisted self-duality conditions enjoy an $SO(2)$ electric-magnetic invariance. We explicitly show that this symmetry is an "off-shell symmetry" (i.e., a symmetry of the action and not just of the equations of motion). Remarks on the extension to higher dimensions are given.

Higher-spin charges in Hamiltonian form. II. Fermi fields

We build the asymptotic higher-spin charges associated with "improper" gauge transformations for fermionic higher-spin gauge fields on Anti de Sitter backgrounds of arbitrary dimension. This is achieved within the canonical formalism. We consider massless fields of spin s+1/2, described by a symmetric spinor-tensor of rank s in the Fang-Fronsdal approach. We begin from a detailed analysis of the spin 5/2 example, for which we cast the Fang-Fronsdal action in Hamiltonian form, we derive the charges and we propose boundary conditions on the canonical variables that secure their finiteness. We then extend the computation of charges and the characterisation of boundary conditions to arbitrary half-integer spin. Our construction generalises to higher-spin fermionic gauge fields the known Hamiltonian derivation of supercharges in AdS supergravity.

A deformation of the Curtright action

We present a deformation of the action principle for a free tensor field of mixed symmetry (2,1) --the Curtright action, a dual formulation of five-dimensional linearized gravity. It is constructed as the dual theory of the Einstein-Hilbert action linearized around a de Sitter background, and its derivation relies on the use of the two-potential formalism as an intermediate step. The resulting action principle is spatially non-local and space-time covariance is not manifest, thus overcoming previous no-go results.

Higher-spin charges in Hamiltonian form. I. Bose fields

We study asymptotic charges for symmetric massless higher-spin fields on Anti de Sitter backgrounds of arbitrary dimension within the canonical formalism. We first analyse in detail the spin-3 example: we cast Fronsdal's action in Hamiltonian form, we derive the charges and we propose boundary conditions on the canonical variables that secure their finiteness. We then extend the computation of charges and the characterisation of boundary conditions to arbitrary spin.

Higher Spin Conformal Geometry in Three Dimensions and Prepotentials for Higher Spin Gauge Fields

We study systematically the conformal geometry of higher spin bosonic gauge fields in three spacetime dimensions. We recall the definition of the Cotton tensor for higher spins and establish a number of its properties that turn out to be key in solving in terms of prepotentials the constraint equations of the Hamiltonian (3 + 1) formulation of four-dimensional higher spin gauge fields. The prepotentials are shown to exhibit higher spin conformal symmetry. Just as for spins 1 and 2, they provide a remarkably simple, manifestly duality invariant formulation of the theory. While the higher spin conformal geometry is developed for arbitrary bosonic spin, we explicitly perform the Hamiltonian analysis and derive the solution of the constraints only in the illustrative case of spin 3. In a separate publication, the Hamiltonian analysis in terms of prepotentials is extended to all bosonic higher spins using the conformal tools of this paper, and the same emergence of higher spin conformal symmetry is confirmed.

Supersymmetric electric-magnetic duality of hypergravity

Hypergravity is the theory in which the graviton, of spin-2, has a supersymmetric partner of spin-5/2. There are "no-go" theorems that prevent interactions in these higher spin theories. However, it appears that one can circumvent them by bringing in an infinite tower of higher spin fields. With this possibility in mind, we study herein the electric-magnetic duality invariance of hypergravity. The analysis is carried out in detail for the free theory of the spin-(2,5/2) multiplet, and it is indicated how it may be extended to the infinite tower of higher spins. Interactions are not considered. The procedure is the same that was employed recently for the spin-(3/2,2) multiplet of supergravity. One introduces new potentials ("prepotentials") by solving the constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation. In terms of the prepotentials, the action is written in a form in which its electric-magnetic duality invariance is manifest. The prepotential action is local, but the spacetime invariance is not manifest. Just as for the spin-2 and spin-(3/2,2) cases, the gauge symmetries of the prepotential action take a form similar to those of the free conformal theory of the same multiplet. The automatic emergence of gauge conformal invariance out of demand of manifest duality invariance, is yet another evidence of the subtle interplay between duality invariance and spacetime symmetry. We also compare and contrast the formulation with that of the analogous spin-(1,3/2) multiplet.

Twisted Self-Duality for Linearized Gravity in D dimensions

The linearized Einstein equations in D spacetime dimensions can be written as twisted self-duality equations expressing that the linearized curvature tensor of the graviton described by a rank-two symmetric tensor, is dual to the linearized curvature tensor of the "dual graviton" described by a tensor of (D-3,1) Young symmetry type. In the case of 4 dimensions, both the graviton and its dual are rank-two symmetric tensors (Young symmetry type (1,1)), while in the case of 11 space-time dimensions relevant to M-theory, the dual graviton is described by a tensor of (8,1) Young symmetry type. We provide in this paper an action principle that yields the twisted self-duality conditions as equations of motion, keeping the graviton and its dual on equal footing. In order to construct a local, quadratic, variational principle for the twisted linear self-duality equations, it is necessary to introduce two "prepotentials". These are also tensors of mixed Young symmetry types and are obtained by solving the Hamiltonian constraints of the Hamiltonian formulation either of the Pauli-Fierz action for the graviton or of the Curtright action for its dual, the resulting actions being identical. The prepotentials enjoy interesting gauge invariance symmetries, which are exhibited and generalize the gauge symmetries found in D=4. A variational principle where the basic variables are the original Pauli-Fierz field and its dual can also be given but contrary to the prepotential action, the corresponding action is non-local in space -- while remaining local in time. We also analyze in detail the Hamiltonian structure of the theory and show that the graviton and its dual are canonically conjugate in a sense made precise in the text.

Duality-invariant bimetric formulation of linearized gravity

A formulation of linearized gravity which is manifestly invariant under electric-magnetic duality rotations in the internal space of the metric and its dual, and which contains both metrics as basic variables (rather than the corresponding prepotentials), is derived. In this bimetric formulation, the variables have a more immediate geometrical significance, but the action is non-local in space, contrary to what occurs in the prepotential formulation. More specifically, one finds that: (i) the kinetic term is non-local in space (but local in time); (ii) the Hamiltonian is local in space and in time; (iii) the variables are subject to two Hamiltonian constraints, one for each metric.

Gravitational Electric-Magnetic Duality, Gauge Invariance and Twisted Self-Duality

The concept of electric-magnetic duality can be extended to linearized gravity. It has indeed been established that in four dimensions, the Pauli-Fierz action (quadratic part of the Einstein-Hilbert action) can be cast in a form that is manifestly invariant under duality rotations in the internal 2-plane of the spacetime curvature and its dual. In order to achieve this manifestly duality-invariant form, it is necessary to introduce two "prepotentials", which form a duality multiplet. These prepotentials enjoy interesting gauge invariance symmetries, which are, for each, linearized diffeomorphisms and linearized Weyl rescalings. The purpose of this note is twofold: (i) To rewrite the manifestly-duality invariant action obtained in previous work in a way that makes its gauge invariances also manifest. (ii) To explicitly show that the equations of motion derived from that action can be interpreted as twisted self-duality conditions on the curvature tensors of the two metrics obtained from the two prepotentials.
