Proton Structure from Neural Simulation-Based Inference at the LHC

The precise determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton is an essential ingredient for LHC analyses, including for those at the upcoming High-Luminosity LHC. So far, PDFs are determined from global fits to binned low-dimensional data obtained from unfolded hard-scattering cross section measurements. In this work we demonstrate for the first time the feasibility of neural simulation-based inference (NSBI) for constraining the proton PDFs using a high-dimensional unbinned data set. Exploiting the full statistical power of unbinned data removes the loss of information inherited by the binning procedure. As a proof-of-concept, we determine the gluon PDF from simulated data of top quark pair production at the LHC with $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Taking into account both experimental and theoretical systematic uncertainties in the detector-level features, we demonstrate how the NSBI pipeline achieves significant improvements in precision compared to low-dimensional binned analyses. Our results illustrate the potential of unbinned inference to reduce the reliance on coarse approximations of uncertainties and their correlations entering PDF determinations, hence contributing to a new paradigm of unbinned detector-level ML-assisted measurements at the LHC.

Top-quark pair production sensitivity to heavy new physics at the FCC-ee

We study the sensitivity of top-quark pair production at the FCC-ee to heavy new physics, parametrised in the Standard Model effective field theory, using discriminants based on matrix elements. The analysis includes detector reconstruction effects, obtained with a fast simulation of the IDEA detector concept, and jet flavour tagging. We consider dimension-six operators that modify the electroweak couplings of the top quark or generate four-fermion interactions, at leading order and in diagrams with two resonant top quarks. The full six-body kinematic information is employed to maximise the discrimination power against the Standard Model. Two bins per dimension in the space of 12 discriminants, one per operator considered, provide a simple and robust methodology to set nearly optimal multidimensional constraints. Bounds on the new physics scale can reach values up to 30 TeV in a single-operator fit and up to 5 TeV in a global multi-operator fit. A combination with High-Luminosity LHC prospects on top-quark operators shows complementary sensitivities which help lift approximate degeneracies.

Rare top quark production and top quark properties in ATLAS and CMS

The production of top quark pairs is one of the most relevant production modes at the LHC, and allow for precise measurement of the properties of this particle. Top quarks are also produced through rarer mechanisms, including the production of multiple top quarks or the associated production of top quarks with electroweak gauge bosons. Although these processes have significantly smaller cross sections, they provide unique sensitivity to the couplings of the top quark and to possible effects of physics beyond the standard model (SM). This contribution reviews recent analyses of rare top quark production performed by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations.

Searches for new physics breaking the CP and flavor symmetries in the top quark sector at CMS

The top quark plays an important role in a number of new physics models, some of which introduce violations to some of the accidental symmetries of the SM, such as the lepton number conservation or introduce additional sources of others already broken, such as the CP symmetry. A set of measurements is presented that probe violation of these symmetries in processes involving the top quark, in association with additional particles.

LHC EFT WG Note: SMEFT predictions, event reweighting, and simulation

This note gives an overview of the tools for predicting expectations in the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at the tree level and one loop available through event generators. Methods of event reweighting, the separate simulation of squared matrix elements, and the simulation of the full SMEFT process are compared in terms of statistical efficacy and potential biases.

Equivariant neural networks for robust $\textit{CP}$ observables

We introduce the usage of equivariant neural networks in the search for violations of the charge-parity ($\textit{CP}$) symmetry in particle interactions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We design neural networks that take as inputs kinematic information of recorded events and that transform equivariantly under the a symmetry group related to the $\textit{CP}$ transformation. We show that this algorithm allows to define observables reflecting the properties of the $\textit{CP}$ symmetry, showcasing its performance in several reference processes in top quark and electroweak physics. Imposing equivariance as an inductive bias in the algorithm improves the numerical convergence properties with respect to other methods that do not rely on equivariance and allows to construct optimal observables that significantly improve the state-of-the-art methodology in the searches considered.

EFT Workshop at Notre Dame

The LPC EFT workshop was held April 25-26, 2024 at the University of Notre Dame. The workshop was organized into five thematic sessions: "how far beyond linear" discusses issues of truncation and validity in interpretation of results with an eye towards practicality; "reconstruction-level results" visits the question of how best to design analyses directly targeting inference of EFT parameters; "logistics of combining likelihoods" addresses the challenges of bringing a diverse array of measurements into a cohesive whole; "unfolded results" tackles the question of designing fiducial measurements for later use in EFT interpretations, and the benefits and limitations of unfolding; and "building a sample library" addresses how best to generate simulation samples for use in data analysis. This document serves as a summary of presentations, subsequent discussions, and actionable items identified over the course of the workshop.

A rotation-equivariant graph neural network for learning hadronic SMEFT effects

We introduce a graph neural network architecture designed to extract novel phenomena in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) context from LHC collision data. The proposed infrared- and collinear-safe architecture is sensitive to the angular orientation of radiation patterns in jets from hadronic decays of highly energetic massive particles. Equivariance with respect to rotations around the jet axis allows for extracting the information on the angular orientation decoupled from the jet substructure. We demonstrate the robustness of the approach and its potential for future probes of the SMEFT at the LHC through toy studies and with realistic event simulations of the WZ process in the semileptonic decay channel.

Associated top production in ATLAS and CMS

A set of measurements of top quark pair and single top quark production in association with standard model (SM) bosons performed by the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations is presented. The consistency of these results among themselves and with the SM prediction is discussed. The latest results on four top quark production are also shown.

Searches for strong production of SUSY particles with two opposite-sign same-flavor leptons at CMS

A search is presented for physics beyond the standard model in events with two opposite-sign, same-flavor leptons, jets and missing transverse momentum in the final state. The search is performed in a dataset of 35.9 $\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV pp collisions recorded by the CMS experiment in the year 2016. The search targets models in which a colored particle is produced. Models are considered, in which a kinematic edge is observed in the dilepton invariant mass distribution and models in which a Z boson arises in the decay chain of the SUSY particles. Such searches have been performed in 8 TeV pp collisions as well as 13 TeV collisions. This version of the search adds additional event categories as well as improved background estimation procedures substantially increasing the sensitivity of the search. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of Supersymmetry.
