Asymptotics of the Selberg Zeta function on the spin moduli space

We prove a limited asymptotic expansion up to order $t^4\log t$ of the logarithmic derivative of the Selberg zeta function for the spin Dirac operator on compact surfaces for families of hyperbolic metrics degenerating towards complete hyperbolic metrics with cusps in a pinching process where the lengths $l_j(t)$ of certain disjoint simple closed geodesics converge smoothly to $0$ as $t\to 0$.

Invariants of stably trivial vector bundles with connection

We define a Chern--Simons invariant of connections on stably trivial vector bundles over smooth manifolds, taking values in $3$-forms modulo closed forms with integral cohomology class. We show an additivity property of this invariant for connections defined on a direct sum of bundles, under a certain block-diagonality condition on the curvature. As a corollary, we deduce an obstruction for conformally immersing a $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold in a translation manifold of dimension $n+1$.

Concentration limit for non-local dissipative convection-diffusion kernels on the hyperbolic space

We study a non-local evolution equation on the hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^N$. We first consider a model for particle transport governed by a non-local interaction kernel defined on the tangent bundle and invariant under the geodesic flow. We study the relaxation limit of this model to a local transport problem, as the kernel gets concentrated near the origin of each tangent space. Under some regularity and integrability conditions on the kernel, we prove that the solution of the rescaled non-local problem converges to that of the local transport equation. Then, we construct a large class of interaction kernels that satisfy those conditions. We also consider a non-local, non-linear convection-diffusion equation on $\mathbb{H}^N$ governed by two kernels, one for each of the diffusion and convection parts, and we prove that the solution converges to the solution of a local problem as the kernels get concentrated. We prove and then use in this sense a compactness tool on manifolds inspired by the work of Bourgain-Brezis-Mironescu.

Cauchy spinors on $3$-manifolds

Let $\mathcal{Z}$ be a spin $4$-manifold carrying a parallel spinor and $M\hookrightarrow \mathcal{Z}$ a hypersurface. The second fundamental form of the embedding induces a flat metric connection on $TM$. Such flat connections satisfy a non-elliptic, non-linear equation in terms of a symmetric $2$-tensor on $M$. When $M$ is compact and has positive scalar curvature, the linearized equation has finite dimensional kernel. Four families of solutions are known on the round $3$-sphere $\mathbb{S}^3$. We study the linearized equation in the vicinity of these solutions and we construct as a byproduct an incomplete hyperkähler metric on $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{R}$ closely related to the Euclidean Taub-NUT metric on $\mathbb{R}^4$. On $\mathbb{S}^3$ there do not exist other solutions which either are constant in a left (or right) invariant frame, have three distinct constant eigenvalues, or are invariant in the direction of a left (or right)-invariant eigenvector. We deduce from this last result an extension of Liebmann's sphere rigidity theorem.

Higher transgressions of the Pfaffian

We define transgressions of arbitrary order, with respect to families of unit-vector fields indexed by a polytope, for the Pfaffian of metric connections for semi-Riemannian metrics on vector bundles. We apply this formula to compute the Euler characteristic of a Riemannian polyhedral manifold in the spirit of Chern's differential-geometric proof of the generalized Gauss-Bonnet formula on closed manifolds and on manifolds-with-boundary. As a consequence, we derive an identity for spherical and hyperbolic polyhedra linking the volumes of faces of even codimension and the measures of outer angles.

Odd Pfaffian forms

On any odd-dimensional oriented Riemannian manifold we define a volume form, which we call the odd Pfaffian, through a certain invariant polynomial with integral coefficients in the curvature tensor. We prove an intrinsic Chern-Gauss-Bonnet formula for incomplete edge singularities in terms of the odd Pfaffian on the fibers of the boundary fibration. The formula holds for product-type model edge metrics where the degeneration is of conical type in each fiber, but also for general classes of perturbations of the model metrics. The same method produces a Chern- Gauss-Bonnet formula for complete, non-compact manifolds with fibered boundaries in the sense of Mazzeo-Melrose and perturbations thereof, involving the odd Pfaffian of the base of the fibration. We deduce the rationality of the usual Pfaffian form on Riemannian orbifolds, and exhibit obstructions for certain metrics on a fibration to be realized as the model at infinity of a flat metric with conical, edge or fibered boundary singularities.

Locally conformally Kähler manifolds with holomorphic Lee field

We prove that a compact lcK manifold with holomorphic Lee vector field is Vaisman provided that either the Lee field has constant norm or the metric is Gauduchon (i.e., the Lee field is divergence-free). We also give examples of compact lcK manifolds with holomorphic Lee vector field which are not Vaisman.

Renormalized volume on the Teichmüller space of punctured surfaces

We define and study the renormalized volume for geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds, including with rank-$1$ cusps. We prove a variation formula, and show that for certain families of convex co-compact hyperbolic metrics $g_\eps$ degenerating to a geometrically finite hyperbolic metric $g_0$ with rank-$1$ cusps, the renormalized volume converges to the renormalized volume of the limiting metric.

The Cotton tensor and Chern-Simons invariants in dimension $3$: an introduction

Chern-Simons invariants of closed oriented Riemannian $3$-manifolds are introduced and studied from the basics. Their first-order variation is the Cotton tensor. The properties of the Cotton tensor: symmetry, conformal covariance, trace- and divergence-freedom, are recovered as corollaries of the Chern-Simons invariant. We prove that the Cotton tensor is the obstruction to local conformal flatness in dimension $3$. Finally we discuss the link between Chern-Simons invariants, the eta invariant, and the central value of the Selberg zeta function. This is a survey paper without original results, based on lecture notes for a doctoral course at the University of Bucharest, March 2014.

Convexity of the renormalized volume of hyperbolic $3$-manifolds

The Hessian of the renormalized volume of geometrically finite hyperbolic $3$-manifolds without rank-$1$ cusps, computed at the hyperbolic metric $g$ with totally geodesic boundary of the convex core, is shown to be a strictly positive bilinear form on the tangent space to Teichmüller space. The metric $g$ is known from results of Bonahon and Storm to be an absolute minimum for the volume of the convex core. We deduce the strict convexity of the functional volume of the convex core at its minimum point.

Ricci surfaces

A Ricci surface is a Riemannian 2-manifold $(M,g)$ whose Gaussian curvature $K$ satisfies $KΔK+g(dK,dK)+4K^3=0$. Every minimal surface isometrically embedded in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is a Ricci surface of non-positive curvature. At the end of the 19th century Ricci-Curbastro has proved that conversely, every point $x$ of a Ricci surface has a neighborhood which embeds isometrically in $\mathbb{R}^3$ as a minimal surface, provided $K(x)<0$. We prove this result in full generality by showing that Ricci surfaces can be locally isometrically embedded either minimally in $\mathbb{R}^3$ or maximally in $\mathbb{R}^{2,1}$, including near points of vanishing curvature. We then develop the theory of closed Ricci surfaces, possibly with conical singularities, and construct classes of examples in all genera $g\geq 2$.

The Cauchy problems for Einstein metrics and parallel spinors

We show that in the analytic category, given a Riemannian metric $g$ on a hypersurface $M\subset \Z$ and a symmetric tensor $W$ on $M$, the metric $g$ can be locally extended to a Riemannian Einstein metric on $Z$ with second fundamental form $W$, provided that $g$ and $W$ satisfy the constraints on $M$ imposed by the contracted Codazzi equations. We use this fact to study the Cauchy problem for metrics with parallel spinors in the real analytic category and give an affirmative answer to a question raised in Bär, Gauduchon, Moroianu (2005). We also answer negatively the corresponding questions in the smooth category.

The renormalized volume and uniformisation of conformal structures

We study the renormalized volume of asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein (AHE in short) manifolds $(M,g)$ when the conformal boundary $\pl M$ has dimension $n$ even. Its definition depends on the choice of metric $h_0$ on $\partial M$ in the conformal class at infinity determined by $g$, we denote it by ${\rm Vol}_R(M,g;h_0)$. We show that ${\rm Vol}_R(M,g;\cdot)$ is a functional admitting a "Polyakov type" formula in the conformal class $[h_0]$ and we describe the critical points as solutions of some non-linear equation $v_n(h_0)={\rm const}$, satisfied in particular by Einstein metrics. In dimension $n=2$, choosing extremizers in the conformal class amounts to uniformizing the surface, while in dimension $n=4$ this amounts to solving the $σ_2$-Yamabe problem. Next, we consider the variation of ${\rm Vol}_R(M,\cdot;\cdot)$ along a curve of AHE metrics $g^t$ with boundary metric $h_0^t$ and we use this to show that, provided conformal classes can be (locally) parametrized by metrics $h$ solving $v_n(h)=\int_{\pl M}v_n(h){\rm dvol}_{h}$, the set of ends of AHE manifolds (up to diffeomorphisms isotopic to Identity) can be viewed as a Lagrangian submanifold in the cotangent space to the space $\mc{T}(\pl M)$ of conformal structures on $\pl M$. We obtain as a consequence a higher-dimensional version of McMullen's quasifuchsian reciprocity. We finally show that conformal classes admitting negatively curved Einstein metrics are local minima for the renormalized volume for a warped product type filling.

The Dirac operator on generalized Taub-NUT spaces

We find sufficient conditions for the absence of harmonic $L^2$ spinors on spin manifolds constructed as cone bundles over a compact Kähler base. These conditions are fulfilled for certain perturbations of the Euclidean metric, and also for the generalized Taub-NUT metrics of Iwai-Katayama, thus proving a conjecture of Vi\csinescu and the second author.

Chern-Simons line bundle on Teichmüller space

Let $X$ be a non-compact geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifold without cusps of rank 1. The deformation space $\mc{H}$ of $X$ can be identified with the Teichmüller space $\mc{T}$ of the conformal boundary of $X$ as the graph of a section in $T^*\mc{T}$. We construct a Hermitian holomorphic line bundle $\mc{L}$ on $\mc{T}$, with curvature equal to a multiple of the Weil-Petersson symplectic form. This bundle has a canonical holomorphic section defined by $e^{\frac{1}π{\rm Vol}_R(X)+2πi\CS(X)}$ where ${\rm Vol}_R(X)$ is the renormalized volume of $X$ and $\CS(X)$ is the Chern-Simons invariant of $X$. This section is parallel on $\mc{H}$ for the Hermitian connection modified by the $(1,0)$ component of the Liouville form on $T^*\mc{T}$. As applications, we deduce that $\mc{H}$ is Lagrangian in $T^*\mc{T}$, and that ${\rm Vol}_R(X)$ is a Kähler potential for the Weil-Petersson metric on $\mc{T}$ and on its quotient by a certain subgroup of the mapping class group. For the Schottky uniformisation, we use a formula of Zograf to construct an explicit isomorphism of holomorphic Hermitian line bundles between $\mc{L}^{-1}$ and the sixth power of the determinant line bundle.
