Realization of Nonholonomic Constraints and Singular Perturbation Theory for Plane Dumbbells

We study the dynamics of pairs of connected masses in the plane, when nonholonomic (knife-edge) constraints are realized by forces of viscous friction, in particular its relation to constrained dynamics, and its approximation by the method of matching asymptotics of singular perturbation theory when the mass to friction ratio is taken as the small parameter. It turns out that long term behaviors of the frictional and constrained systems may differ dramatically no matter how small the perturbation is, and when this happens is not determined by any transparent feature of the equations of motion. The choice of effective time scales for matching asymptotics is also subtle and non-obvious, and secular terms appearing in them can not be dealt with by the classical methods. Our analysis is based on comparison to analytic solutions, and we present a reduction procedure for plane dumbbells that leads to them in some cases.

Invasion waves in the presence of a mutualist

This paper studies invasion waves in the diffusive Competitor-Competitor-Mutualist model generalizing the 2-species Lotka-Volterra model studied by Weinberger et al. The mutualist may benefit the invading or the resident species producing two different types of invasions. Sufficient conditions for linear determinacy are derived in both cases, and when they hold, explicit formulas for linear spreading speeds of the invasions are obtained by linearizing the model. While in the first case the linear speed is increased by the mutualist, it is unaffected in the second case. Mathematical methods are based on converting the model into a cooperative reaction-diffusion system.

The asymptotic trace norm of random circulants and the graph energy

We compute the expected normalized trace norm (matrix/graph energy) of random symmetric band circulant matrices and graphs in the limit of large sizes, and obtain explicit bounds on the rate of convergence to the limit, and on the probabilities of large deviations. We also show that random symmetric band Toeplitz matrices have the same limit norm assuming that their band widths remain small relative to their sizes. We compare the limit norms across a range of related random matrix and graph ensembles.

Positive semigroups and algebraic Riccati equations in Banach spaces

We generalize Wonham's theorem on solvability of algebraic operator Riccati equations to Banach spaces, namely there is a unique stabilizing solution to A*P+PA-PBB*P+C*C=0 when (A,B) is exponentially stabilizable and (C,A) is exponentially detectable. The proof is based on a new approach that treats the linear part of the equation as the generator of a positive semigroup on the space of symmetric operators from a Banach space to its dual, and the quadratic part as an order concave map. A direct analog of global Newton's iteration for concave functions is then used to approximate the solution, the approximations converge in the strong operator topology, and the convergence is monotone. The linearized equations are the well-known Lyapunov equations of the form A*P+PA=-Q, and semigroup stability criterion in terms of them is also generalized.

Positive semigroups and abstract Lyapunov equations

We consider abstract equations of the form Ax=-z on a locally convex space, where A generates a positive semigroup and z is a positive element. This is an abstract version of the operator Lyapunov equation A*P+PA=-Q from control theory. It is proved that under suitable assumptions existence of a positive solution implies that -A has a positive inverse, and the generated semigroup is asymptotically stable. We do not require that z is an order unit, or that the space contains any order units. As an application, we generalize Wonham's theorem on the operator Lyapunov equations with detectable right hand sides to reflexive Banach spaces.

D'Alembert sums for vibrating bar with viscous ends

We describe a new method for finding analytic solutions to some initial-boundary problems for partial differential equations with constant coefficients. The method is based on expanding the denominator of the Laplace transformed Green's function of the problem into a convergent geometric series. If the denominator is a linear combination of exponents with real powers one obtains a closed form solution as a sum with finite but time dependent number of terms. We call it a d'Alembert sum. This representation is computationally most effective for small evolution times, but it remains valid even when the system of eigenmodes is incomplete and the eigenmode expansion is unavailable. Moreover, it simplifies in such cases. In vibratory problems d'Alembert sums represent superpositions of original and partially reflected traveling waves. They generalize the d'Alembert type formulas for the wave equation, and reduce to them when original waves can undergo only finitely many reflections in the entire course of evolution. The method is applied to vibrations of a bar with dampers at each end and at some internal point. The results are illustrated by computer simulations and comparisons to modal and FEM solutions.

A short proof of the Arendt-Chernoff-Kato theorem

We give a short new proof of the Arendt-Chernoff-Kato theorem, which characterizes generators of positive C0 semigroups in order unit spaces. The proof avoids half-norms and subdifferentials, and is based on a sufficient condition for an operator to have positive inverse, which is new even for matrices.

The Ritz method with Lagrange multipliers

We develop a general form of the Ritz method for trial functions that do not satisfy the essential boundary conditions. The idea is to treat the latter as variational constraints and remove them using the Lagrange multipliers. In multidimensional problems in addition to the trial functions boundary weight functions also have to be selected to approximate the boundary conditions. We prove convergence of the method and discuss its limitations and implementation issues. In particular, we discuss the required regularity of the variational functional, the completeness of systems of the trial functions, and conditions for consistency of the equations for the trial solutions. The discussion is accompanied by a detailed examination of examples, both analytic and numerical, to illustrate the method.

Binomial ARMA count series from renewal processes

This paper describes a new method for generating stationary integer-valued time series from renewal processes. We prove that if the lifetime distribution of renewal processes is nonlattice and the probability generating function is rational, then the generated time series satisfy causal and invertible ARMA type stochastic difference equations. The result provides an easy method for generating integer-valued time series with ARMA type autocovariance functions. Examples of generating binomial ARMA(p,p-1) series from lifetime distributions with constant hazard rates after lag p are given as an illustration. An estimation method is developed for the AR(p) cases.

Synchronization of Huygens' clocks and the Poincare method

We study two models of connected pendulum clocks synchronizing their oscillations, a phenomenon originally observed by Huygens. The oscillation angles are assumed to be small so that the pendulums are modeled by harmonic oscillators, clock escapements are modeled by the van der Pol terms. The mass ratio of the pendulum bobs to their casings is taken as a small parameter. Analytic conditions for existence and stability of synchronization regimes, and analytic expressions for their stable amplitudes and period corrections are derived using the Poincare theorem on existence of periodic solutions in autonomous quasi-linear systems. The anti-phase regime always exists and is stable under variation of the system parameters. The in-phase regime may exist and be stable, exist and be unstable, or not exist at all depending on parameter values. As the damping in the frame connecting the clocks is increased the in-phase stable amplitude and period are decreasing until the regime first destabilizes and then disappears. The results are most complete for the traditional three degrees of freedom model, where the clock casings and the frame are consolidated into a single mass.

Explicit solution for vibrating bar with viscous boundaries and internal damper

We investigate longitudinal vibrations of a bar subjected to viscous boundary conditions at each end, and an internal damper at an arbitrary point along the bar's length. The system is described by four independent parameters and exhibits a variety of behaviors including rigid motion, super stability/instability and zero damping. The solution is obtained by applying the Laplace transform to the equation of motion and computing the Green's function of the transformed problem. This leads to an unconventional eigenvalue-like problem with the spectral variable in the boundary conditions. The eigenmodes of the problem are necessarily complex-valued and are not orthogonal in the usual inner product. Nonetheless, in generic cases we obtain an explicit eigenmode expansion for the response of the bar to initial conditions and external force. For some special values of parameters the system of eigenmodes may become incomplete, or no non-trivial eigenmodes may exist at all. We thoroughly analyze physical and mathematical reasons for this behavior and explicitly identify the corresponding parameter values. In particular, when no eigenmodes exist, we obtain closed form solutions. Theoretical analysis is complemented by numerical simulations, and analytic solutions are compared to computations using finite elements.

Homotopy classification of maps into homogeneous spaces

We give an alternative to Postnikov's homotopy classification of maps from 3-dimensional CW-complexes to homogeneous spaces G/H of Lie groups. It describes homotopy classes in terms of lifts to the group G and is suitable for extending the notion of homotopy to Sobolev maps. This is required for applications to variational problems of mathematical physics.

Gauge theory of Faddeev-Skyrme functionals

We study geometric variational problems for a class of nonlinear sigma-models in quantum field theory. Mathematically, one needs to minimize an energy functional on homotopy classes of maps from closed 3-manifolds into compact homogeneous spaces G/H. The minimizers are known as Hopfions and exhibit localized knot-like structure. Our main results include proving existence of Hopfions as finite energy Sobolev maps in each (generalized) homotopy class when the target space is a symmetric space. For more general spaces we obtain a weaker result on existence of minimizers in each 2-homotopy class. Our approach is based on representing maps into G/H by equivalence classes of flat connections. The equivalence is given by gauge symmetry on pullbacks of G-->G/H bundles. We work out a gauge calculus for connections under this symmetry, and use it to eliminate non-compactness from the minimization problem by fixing the gauge.

Introduction to the Gopakumar-Vafa Large N Duality

Gopakumar-Vafa large N duality is a correspondence between Chern-Simons invariants of a link in a 3-manifold and relative Gromov-Witten invariants of a 6-dimensional symplectic manifold relative to a Lagrangian submanifold. We address the correspondence between the Chern-Simons free energy of S^3 with no link and the Gromov-Witten invariant of the resolved conifold in great detail. This case avoids mathematical difficulties in formulating a definition of relative Gromov-Witten invariants, but includes all of the important ideas. There is a vast amount of background material related to this duality. We make a point of collecting all of the background material required to check this duality in the case of the 3-sphere, and we have tried to present the material in a way complementary to the existing literature. This paper contains a large section on Gromov-Witten theory and a large section on quantum invariants of 3-manifolds. It also includes some physical motivation, but for the most part it avoids physical terminology.

Quantum Barnes function as the partition function of the resolved conifold

We suggest a new strategy for proving large $N$ duality by interpreting Gromov-Witten, Donaldson-Thomas and Chern-Simons invariants of a Calabi-Yau threefold as different characterizations of the same holomorphic function. For the resolved conifold this function turns out to be the quantum Barnes function, a natural $q$-deformation of the classical one that in its turn generalizes Euler's gamma function. Our reasoning is based on a new formula for this function that expresses it as a graded product of $q$-shifted multifactorials.

Conormal bundles to knots and the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture

We offer a new construction of Lagrangian submanifolds for the Gopakumar-Vafa conjecture relating the Chern-Simons theory on the 3-sphere and the Gromov-Witten theory on the resolved conifold. Given a knot in the 3-sphere its conormal bundle is perturbed to disconnect it from the zero section and then pulled through the conifold transition. The construction produces totally real submanifolds of the resolved conifold that are Lagrangian in a perturbed symplectic structure and correspond to knots in a natural and explicit way. We prove that both the resolved conifold and the knot Lagrangians in it have bounded geometry, and that the moduli spaces of holomorphic curves ending on the Lagrangians are compact in the Gromov topology.

Homogeneous spaces and Faddeev-Skyrme models

We study geometric variational problems for a class of effective models in quantum field theory known as Faddeev-Skyrme models. Mathematically one considers minimizing an energy functional on homotopy classes of maps from closed 3-manifolds into homogeneous spaces of compact Lie groups. The energy minimizers known as Hopfions describe stable configurations of subatomic particles such as protons and their strong interactions. In particular, we introduce novel Sobolev spaces suitable for our variational problem and develop the notion of homotopy type for maps in such spaces that generalizes homotopy for smooth and continuous maps. This notion is based on defining a generalized Hopf invariant for Sobolev maps into homogeneous spaces that was previously known only for maps into $S^2$. Since the spaces in question are neither linear nor even convex we represent maps by gauge potentials that form a linear space and reformulate the problem in terms of these potentials. However, this representation of maps introduces some gauge ambiguity into the picture and we work out 'gauge calculus' for the principal bundles involved to apply the gauge-fixing techniques that eliminate the ambiguity. These bundles arise as pullbacks of the structure bundles $H\hra G\to G/H$ of homogeneous spaces and we study their topology and geometry that are of independent interest. Our main results include proving existence of Hopfions as finite energy Sobolev maps in each (generalized) homotopy class when the target space is a symmetric space. For more general spaces we obtain a weaker result on existence of minimizers only in each 2-homotopy class.
