Complete Non-Selfadjointness for Schrödinger Operators on the Semi-Axis

In this note we investigate complete non-selfadjointness for all maximally dissipative extensions of a Schrödinger operator on a half-line with dissipative bounded potential and dissipative boundary condition. We show that all maximally dissipative extensions that preserve the differential expression are completely non-selfadjoint. However, it is possible for maximally dissipative extensions to have a one-dimensional reducing subspace on which the operator is selfadjoint. We give a characterisation of these extensions and the corresponding subspaces and present a specific example.

On Cayley Identity for Self-Adjoint Operators in Hilbert Spaces

We prove an analogue to the Cayley identity for an arbitrary self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space. We also provide two new ways to characterize vectors belonging to the singular spectral subspace in terms of the analytic properties of the resolvent of the operator, computed on these vectors. The latter are analogous to those used routinely in the scattering theory for the absolutely continuous subspace.

Spectral analysis of a class of hermitian Jacobi matrices in a critical (double root) hyperbolic case

We consider a class of Jacobi matrices with periodically modulated diagonal in a critical hyperbolic ("double root") situation. For the model with "non-smooth" matrix entries we obtain the asymptotics of generalized eigenvectors and analyze the spectrum. In addition, we reformulate a very helpful theorem from a paper of Janas and Moszynski in its full generality in order to serve the needs of our method.

The abstract Titchmarsh-Weyl M-function for adjoint operator pairs and its relation to the spectrum

In the setting of adjoint pairs of operators we consider the question: to what extent does the Weyl M-function see the same singularities as the resolvent of a certain restriction $A_B$ of the maximal operator? We obtain results showing that it is possible to describe explicitly certain spaces $\Sc$ and $\tilde{\Sc}$ such that the resolvent bordered by projections onto these subspaces is analytic everywhere that the M-function is analytic. We present three examples -- one involving a Hain-Lüst type operator, one involving a perturbed Friedrichs operator and one involving a simple ordinary differential operators on a half line -- which together indicate that the abstract results are probably best possible.

Decay bounds on eigenfunctions and the singular spectrum of unbounded Jacobi matrices

Bounds on the exponential decay of generalized eigenfunctions of bounded and unbounded selfadjoint Jacobi matrices are established. Two cases are considered separately: (i) the case in which the spectral parameter lies in a general gap of the spectrum of the Jacobi matrix and (ii) the case of a lower semi-bounded Jacobi matrix with values of the spectral parameter below the spectrum. It is demonstrated by examples that both results are sharp. We apply these results to obtain a "many barriers-type" criterion for the existence of square-summable generalized eigenfunctions of an unbounded Jacobi matrix at almost every value of the spectral parameter in suitable open sets. As an application, we provide examples of unbounded Jacobi matrices with a spectral mobility edge.

Discrete spectrum in a critical coupling case of Jacobi matrices with spectral phase transitions by uniform asymptotic analysis

For a two-parameter family of Jacobi matrices exhibiting first-order spectral phase transitions, we prove discreteness of the spectrum in the positive real axis when the parameters are in one of the transition boundaries. To this end we develop a method for obtaining uniform asymptotics, with respect to the spectral parameter, of the generalized eigenvectors. Our technique can be applied to a wide range of Jacobi matrices.

The critical temperature for the BCS equation at weak coupling

For the BCS equation with local two-body interaction $λV(x)$, we give a rigorous analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the critical temperature as $λ\to 0$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions on $V(x)$ for the existence of a non-trivial solution for all values of $λ>0$.

Boundary triplets and M-functions for non-selfadjoint operators, with applications to elliptic PDEs and block operator matrices

Starting with an adjoint pair of operators, under suitable abstract versions of standard PDE hypotheses, we consider the Weyl M-function of extensions of the operators. The extensions are determined by abstract boundary conditions and we establish results on the relationship between the M-function as an analytic function of a spectral parameter and the spectrum of the extension. We also give an example where the M-function does not contain the whole spectral information of the resolvent, and show that the results can be applied to elliptic PDEs where the M-function corresponds to the Dirichlet to Neumann map.

The Case of Critical Coupling in a Class of Unbounded Jacobi Matrices Exhibiting a First-Order Phase Transition

We consider a class of Jacobi matrices with unbounded coefficients. This class is known to exhibit a first-order phase transition in the sense that, as a parameter is varied, one has purely discrete spectrum below the transition point and purely absolutely continuous spectrum above the transition point. We determine the spectral type and solution asymptotics at the transition point.

Moment Analysis for Localization in Random Schroedinger Operators

We study localization effects of disorder on the spectral and dynamical properties of Schroedinger operators with random potentials. The new results include exponentially decaying bounds on the transition amplitude and related projection kernels, including in the mean. These are derived through the analysis of fractional moments of the resolvent, which are finite due to the resonance-diffusing effects of the disorder. The main difficulty which has up to now prevented an extension of this method to the continuum can be traced to the lack of a uniform bound on the Lifshitz-Krein spectral shift associated with the local potential terms. The difficulty is avoided here through the use of a weak-L1 estimate concerning the boundary-value distribution of resolvents of maximally dissipative operators, combined with standard tools of relative compactness theory.

Localization near fluctuation boundaries via fractional moments and applications

We present a new, short, self-contained proof of localization properties of multi-dimensional continuum random Schrödinger operators in the fluctuation boundary regime. Our method is based on the recent extension of the fractional moment method to continuum models in by Aizenman et al, but does not require the random potential to satisfy a covering condition. Applications to random surface potentials and potentials with random displacements are included.
