Emergence and combinatorial accumulation of jittering regimes in spiking oscillators with delayed feedback

Interaction via pulses is common in many natural systems, especially neuronal. In this article we study one of the simplest possible systems with pulse interaction: a phase oscillator with delayed pulsatile feedback. When the oscillator reaches a specific state, it emits a pulse, which returns after propagating through a delay line. The impact of an incoming pulse is described by the oscillator's phase reset curve (PRC). In such a system we discover an unexpected phenomenon: for a sufficiently steep slope of the PRC, a periodic regular spiking solution bifurcates with several multipliers crossing the unit circle at the same parameter value. The number of such critical multipliers increases linearly with the delay and thus may be arbitrary large. This bifurcation is accompanied by the emergence of numerous "jittering" regimes with non-equal interspike intervals (ISIs). Each of these regimes corresponds to a periodic solution of the system with a period roughly proportional to the delay. The number of different "jittering" solutions emerging at the bifurcation point increases exponentially with the delay. We describe the combinatorial mechanism that underlies the emergence of such a variety of solutions. In particular, we show how a periodic solution exhibiting several distinct ISIs can imply the existence of multiple other solutions obtained by rearranging of these ISIs. We show that the theoretical results for phase oscillators accurately predict the behavior of an experimentally implemented electronic oscillator with pulsatile feedback.

The dynamical impact of a shortcut in unidirectionally coupled rings of oscillators

We study the destabilization mechanism in a unidirectional ring of identical oscillators, perturbed by the introduction of a long-range connection. It is known that for a homogeneous, unidirectional ring of identical Stuart-Landau oscillators the trivial equilibrium undergoes a sequence of Hopf bifurcations eventually leading to the coexistence of multiple stable periodic states resembling the Eckhaus scenario. We show that this destabilization scenario persists under small non-local perturbations. In this case, the Eckhaus line is modulated according to certain resonance conditions. In the case when the shortcut is strong, we show that the coexisting periodic solutions split up into two groups. The first group consists of orbits which are unstable for all parameter values, while the other one shows the classical Eckhaus behavior.

Reduction of Interaction Delays in Networks

Delayed interactions are a common property of coupled natural systems and therefore arise in a variety of different applications. For instance, signals in neural or laser networks propagate at finite speed giving rise to delayed connections. Such systems are often modeled by delay differential equations with discrete delays. In realistic situations, these delays are not identical on different connections. We show that by a componentwise timeshift transformation it is often possible to reduce the number of different delays and simplify the models without loss of information. We identify dynamic invariants of this transformation, determine its capabilities to reduce the number of delays and interpret these findings in terms of the topology of the underlying graph. In particular, we show that networks with identical sums of delay times along the fundamental semicycles are dynamically equivalent and we provide a normal form for these systems. We illustrate the theory using a network motif of coupled Mackey-Glass systems with 8 different time delays, which can be reduced to an equivalent motif with three delays.

Multistable jittering in oscillators with pulsatile delayed feedback

Oscillatory systems with time-delayed pulsatile feedback appear in various applied and theoretical research areas, and received a growing interest in the last years. For such systems, we report a remarkable scenario of destabilization of a periodic regular spiking regime. In the bifurcation point numerous regimes with non-equal interspike intervals emerge simultaneously. We show that this bifurcation is triggered by the steepness of the oscillator's phase resetting curve and that the number of the emerging, so-called "jittering" regimes grows exponentially with the delay value. Although this appears as highly degenerate from a dynamical systems viewpoint, the "multi-jitter" bifurcation occurs robustly in a large class of systems. We observe it not only in a paradigmatic phase-reduced model, but also in a simulated Hodgkin-Huxley neuron model and in an experiment with an electronic circuit.

Pattern Recognition in a Ring of Delayed Phase Oscillators

We show that a ring of phase oscillators coupled with transmission delays can be used as a pattern recognition system. The introduced model encodes patterns as stable periodic orbits. We present a detailed analysis of the underlying dynamics. In particular, we show that the system possesses a multitude of periodic solutions, prove stability results and present a bifurcation analysis. Furthermore, we show successful recognition results using artificial patterns and speech recordings.

Pattern formation in systems with multiple delayed feedbacks

Dynamical systems with complex delayed interactions arise commonly when propagation times are significant, yielding complicated oscillatory instabilities. In this Letter, we introduce a class of systems with multiple, hierarchically long time delays, and using a suitable space-time representation we uncover features otherwise hidden in their temporal dynamics. The behaviour in the case of two delays is shown to ''encode'' two-dimensional spiral defects and defects turbulence. A multiple scale analysis sets the equivalence to a complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and a novel criterium for the attainment of the long-delay regime is introduced. We also demonstrate this phenomenon for a semiconductor laser with two delayed optical feedbacks.

Delay-induced patterns in a two-dimensional lattice of coupled oscillators

We show how a variety of stable spatio-temporal periodic patterns can be created in 2D-lattices of coupled oscillators with non-homogeneous coupling delays. A "hybrid dispersion relation" is introduced, which allows studying the stability of time-periodic patterns analytically in the limit of large delay. The results are illustrated using the FitzHugh-Nagumo coupled neurons as well as coupled limit cycle (Stuart-Landau) oscillators.

Synchronization and scaling properties of chaotic networks with multiple delays

We study chaotic systems with multiple time delays that range over several orders of magnitude. We show that the spectrum of Lyapunov exponents (LE) in such systems possesses a hierarchical structure, with different parts scaling with the different delays. This leads to different types of chaos, depending on the scaling of the maximal LE. Our results are relevant, in particular, for the synchronization properties of hierarchical networks (networks of networks) where the nodes of subnetworks are coupled with shorter delays and couplings between different subnetworks are realized with longer delay times. Units within a subnetwork can synchronize if the maximal exponent scales with the shorter delay, long range synchronization between different subnetworks is only possible if the maximal exponent scales with the long delay. The results are illustrated analytically for Bernoulli maps and numerically for tent maps.

On the stability of periodic orbits in delay equations with large delay

We prove a necessary and sufficient criterion for the exponential stability of periodic solutions of delay differential equations with large delay. We show that for sufficiently large delay the Floquet spectrum near criticality is characterized by a set of curves, which we call asymptotic continuous spectrum, that is independent on the delay.

The dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator

We investigate the dynamics of the pendulum suspended on the forced Duffing oscillator. The detailed bifurcation analysis in two parameter space (amplitude and frequency of excitation) which presents both oscillating and rotating periodic solutions of the pendulum has been performed. We identify the areas with low number of coexisting attractors in the parameter space as the coexistence of different attractors has a significant impact on the practical usage of the proposed system as a tuned mass absorber.

Frequency locking by external forcing in systems with rotational symmetry

We study locking of the modulation frequency of a relative periodic orbit in a general $S^1$-equivariant system of ordinary differential equations under an external forcing of modulated wave type. Our main result describes the shape of the locking region in the three-dimensional space of the forcing parameters: intensity, wave frequency, and modulation frequency. The difference of the wave frequencies of the relative periodic orbit and the forcing is assumed to be large and differences of modulation frequencies to be small. The intensity of the forcing is small in the generic case and can be large in the degenerate case, when the first order averaging vanishes. Applications are external electrical and/or optical forcing of selfpulsating states of lasers.

Strong and weak chaos in nonlinear networks with time-delayed couplings

We study chaotic synchronization in networks with time-delayed coupling. We introduce the notion of strong and weak chaos, distinguished by the scaling properties of the maximum Lyapunov exponent within the synchronization manifold for large delay times, and relate this to the condition for stable or unstable chaotic synchronization, respectively. In simulations of laser models and experiments with electronic circuits, we identify transitions from weak to strong and back to weak chaos upon monotonically increasing the coupling strength.

Two-cluster bifurcations in systems of globally pulse-coupled oscillators

For a system of globally pulse-coupled phase-oscillators, we derive conditions for stability of the completely synchronous state and all possible two-cluster states and explain how the different states are naturally connected via bifurcations. The coupling is modeled using the phase-response-curve (PRC), which measures the sensitivity of each oscillator's phase to perturbations. For large systems with a PRC, which turns to zero at the spiking threshold, we are able to find the parameter regions where multiple stable two-cluster states coexist and illustrate this by an example. In addition, we explain how a locally unstable one-cluster state may form an attractor together will its homoclinic connections. This leads to the phenomenon of intermittent, asymptotic synchronization with abating beats away from the perfect synchrony.

Emergence of one- and two-cluster states in populations of globally pulse-coupled oscillators

The subject of this paper is a system of phase-oscillators, which are globally pulse-coupled via excitatory interaction. The appearance and stability of one- and two-cluster-states is investigated for a family of unimodal phase-response-curves (PRC). The PRCs and their derivatives are assumed to be zero at the spiking point. We show that there exist stable homoclinic connections of the one-cluster state for PRCs with the maximum located shortly before the spiking point and coexisting stable two-clusters states when the maximum of the PRC is located shortly after the spike.

Frequency locking of modulated waves

We consider the behavior of a modulated wave solution to an $\mathbb{S}^1$-equivariant autonomous system of differential equations under an external forcing of modulated wave type. The modulation frequency of the forcing is assumed to be close to the modulation frequency of the modulated wave solution, while the wave frequency of the forcing is supposed to be far from that of the modulated wave solution. We describe the domain in the three-dimensional control parameter space (of frequencies and amplitude of the forcing) where stable locking of the modulation frequencies of the forcing and the modulated wave solution occurs. Our system is a simplest case scenario for the behavior of self-pulsating lasers under the influence of external periodically modulated optical signals.

From synchronization to Lyapunov exponents and back

The goal of this paper is twofold. In the first part we discuss a general approach to determine Lyapunov exponents from ensemble- rather than time-averages. The approach passes through the identification of locally stable and unstable manifolds (the Lyapunov vectors), thereby revealing an analogy with generalized synchronization. The method is then applied to a periodically forced chaotic oscillator to show that the modulus of the Lyapunov exponent associated to the phase dynamics increases quadratically with the coupling strength and it is therefore different from zero already below the onset of phase-synchronization. The analytical calculations are carried out for a model, the generalized special flow, that we construct as a simplified version of the periodically forced Rossler oscillator.
