Finite groups with few character values that are not character degrees

Let $ G $ be a finite group and $ χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G) $. Define $ \mathrm{cv}(G)=\{χ(g)\mid χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G), g\in G \} $, $ \mathrm{cv}(χ)=\{χ(g)\mid g\in G \} $ and denote $ \mathrm{dl}(G) $ by the derived length of $ G $. In the 1990s Berkovich, Chillag and Zhmud described groups $ G $ in which $ |\mathrm{cv}(χ)|=3 $ for every non-linear $ χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G) $ and their results show that $ G $ is solvable. They also considered groups in which $ |\mathrm{cv}(χ)|=4 $ for some non-linear $ χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G) $. Continuing with their work, in this article, we prove that if $ |\mathrm{cv}(χ)|\leqslant 4 $ for every non-linear $ χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G) $, then $ G $ is solvable. We also considered groups $ G $ such that $ |\mathrm{cv}(G)\setminus \mathrm{cd}(G)|=2 $. T. Sakurai classified these groups in the case when $ |\mathrm{cd}(G)|=2 $. We show that $ G $ is solvable and we classify groups $ G $ when $ |\mathrm{cd}(G)|\leqslant 4 $ or $ \mathrm{dl}(G)\leqslant 3 $. It is interesting to note that these groups are such that $ |\mathrm{cv}(χ)|\leqslant 4 $ for all $ χ\in \mathrm{Irr}(G) $. Lastly, we consider finite groups $ G $ with $ |\mathrm{cv}(G)\setminus \mathrm{cd}(G)|=3 $. For nilpotent groups, we obtain a characterization which is also connected to the work of Berkovich, Chillag and Zhmud. For non-nilpotent groups, we obtain the structure of $ G $ when $ \mathrm{dl}(G)=2 $.

Finite groups with few character values

A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Average number of zeros of characters of finite groups

There has been some interest on how the average character degree affects the structure of a finite group. We define, and denote by $ \mathrm{anz}(G) $, the average number of zeros of characters of a finite group $ G $ as the number of zeros in the character table of $ G $ divided by the number of irreducible characters of $ G $. We show that if $ \mathrm{anz}(G) < 1 $, then the group $ G $ is solvable and also that if $ \mathrm{anz}(G) < \frac{1}{2} $, then $ G $ is supersolvable. We characterise abelian groups by showing that $ \mathrm{anz}(G) < \frac{1}{3} $ if and only if $ G $ is abelian.

On the orders of vanishing elements of finite groups

Let $ G$ be a finite group and $p$ be a prime. Let $ \mathrm{Vo}(G) $ denote the set of the orders of vanishing elements, $\mathrm{Vo}_{p} (G)$ be the subset of $ \mathrm{Vo}(G) $ consisting of those orders of vanishing elements divisible by $p$ and $\mathrm{Vo}_{p'} (G) $ be the subset of $ \mathrm{Vo}(G) $ consisting of those orders of vanishing elements not divisible by $p$. Dolfi, Pacifi, Sanus and Spiga proved that if $ a $ is not a $ p $-power for all $ a\in \mathrm{Vo}(G)$, then $ G $ has a normal Sylow $ p $-subgroup. In another article, the same authors also show that if if $ \mathrm{Vo}_{p'}(G) =\emptyset $, then $ G $ has a normal nilpotent $ p $-complement. These results are variations of the well known Ito-Michler and Thompson theorems. In this article we study solvable groups such that $|\mathrm{Vo}_{p}(G)| = 1 $ and show that $ P' $ is subnormal. This is analogous to the work of Isaacs, Moréto, Navarro and Tiep where they considered groups with just one character degree divisible by $ p $. We also study certain finite groups $G$ such that $|\mathrm{Vo}_{p'}(G)| = 1 $ and we prove that $ G $ has a normal subgroup $ L $ such that $ G/L $ a normal $ p $-complement and $ L $ has a normal $ p $-complement. This is analogous to the recent work of Giannelli, Rizo and Schaeffer Fry on character degrees with a few $p'$-character degrees. Bubboloni, Dolfi and Spiga studied finite groups such that every vanishing element is of order $ p^{m} $ for some integer $ m\geqslant 1 $. As a generalization, we investigate groups such that $ \gcd(a,b)=p^{m} $ for some integer $ m \geqslant 0 $, for all $ a,b\in \mathrm{Vo}(G) $. We also study finite solvable groups whose irreducible characters vanish only on elements of prime power order.

On a question of Dixon and Rahnamai Barghi

Let $ G $ be a finite non-solvable group with a primitive irreducible character $ χ$ that vanishes on one conjugacy class. We show that $ G $ has a homomorphic image that is either almost simple or a Frobenius group. We also classify such groups $ G $ with a composition factor isomorphic to a sporadic group, an alternating group $ \rm{A}_{n} $, $ n\geq 5 $ or $ \rm{PSL}_{2}(q) $, where $ q\geq 4 $ is a prime power, when $ χ$ is faithful. Our results partially answer a question of Dixon and Rahnamai Barghi.

Finite groups with some restriction on the vanishing set

Let $ x $ be an element of a finite group $ G $ and denote the order of $ x $ by $ \mathrm{ord}(x) $. We consider a finite group $ G $ such that $ \gcd(\mathrm{ord}(x),\mathrm{ord}(y))\leqslant 2 $ for any two vanishing elements $ x $ and $ y $ contained in distinct conjugacy classes. We show that such a group $ G $ is solvable. When $ G $ with the property above is supersolvable, we show that $ G $ has a normal metabelian $ 2 $-complement.

Zeros of primitive characters of finite groups

We classify finite non-solvable groups with a faithful primitive irreducible complex character that vanishes on a unique conjugacy class. Our results answer a question of Dixon and Rahnamai Barghi and suggest an extension of Burnside's classical theorem on zeros of characters.
