Separability of multi-qubit states in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries

We give separability criteria for general multi-qubit states in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries. We define two numbers which are obtained from diagonal and anti-diagonal entries, respectively, and compare them to get criteria. They give rise to characterizations of separability when all the entries are zero except for diagonal and anti-diagonal, like Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger diagonal states. The criteria is strong enough to get nonzero volume of entanglement with positive partial transposes.

Three qubit separable states of length ten with unique decompositions

We construct one parameter families of three qubit separable states with length ten, which is strictly greater than the whole dimension eight. These states are located on the boundary of the convex set of all separable states, but they are in the interior of the convex set of all states with positive partial transposes. They are also decomposed into the convex sum of ten pure product states in a unique way.

The role of phases in detecting three-qubit entanglement

We propose separability criteria for three-qubit states in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries to detect entanglement with positive partial transposes. We report that the phases, that is, the angular parts of anti-diagonal entries, play a crucial role in determining whether a given three-qubit state is separable or entangled, and they must obey even an identity for separability in some cases. These criteria are strong enough to detect PPT (positive partial transpose) entanglement with nonzero volume. In several cases when all the entries are zero except for diagonal and anti-diagonal entries, we characterize separability using phases. These include the cases when anti-diagonal entries of such states share a common magnitude, and when ranks are less than or equal to six. We also compute the lengths of rank six cases, and find three-qubit separable states with lengths $8$ whose maximum ranks of partial transposes are $7$.

Indecomposable exposed positive bi-linear maps between two by two matrices

Positive bi-linear maps between matrix algebras play important roles to detect tri-partite entanglement by the duality between bi-linear maps and tri-tensor products. We exhibit indecomposable positive bi-linear maps between $2\times 2$ matrices which generate extreme rays in the cone of all positive bi-linear maps. In fact, they are exposed, and so detect entanglement of positive partial transpose whose volume is nonzero.

Separability criterion for three-qubit states with a four dimensional norm

We give a separability criterion for three qubit states in terms of diagonal and anti-diagonal entries. This gives us a complete characterization of separability when all the entries are zero except for diagonal and anti-diagonals. The criterion is expressed in terms of a norm arising from anti-diagonal entries. We compute this norm in several cases, so that we get criteria with which we can decide the separability by routine computations.

Separability of three qubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger diagonal states

We characterize the separability of three qubit GHZ diagonal states in terms of entries. This enables us to check separability of GHZ diagonal states without decomposition into the sum of pure product states. In the course of discussion, we show that the necessary criterion of Gühne for (full) separability of three qubit GHZ diagonal states is sufficient with a simpler formula. The main tool is to use entanglement witnesses which are tri-partite Choi matrices of positive bi-linear maps.

Construction of multi-qubit optimal genuine entanglement witnesses

We interpret multi-partite genuine entanglement witnesses as simultaneous positivity of various maps arising from them. We apply this result to multi-qubit {\sf X}-shaped Hermitian matrices, and characterize the conditions for them to be genuine entanglement witnesses, in terms of entries. Furthermore, we find all optimal ones among them. They turn out to have the spanning properties, and so they detect non-zero volume set of multi-qubit genuine entanglement. We also characterize decomposability for {\sf X}-shaped entanglement witnesses.

Product vectors in the ranges of multi-partite states with positive partial transposes and permanents of matrices

In this paper, we consider a system of homogeneous algebraic equations in complex variables and their conjugates, which arise naturally from the range criterion for separability of PPT states. We examine systematically these equations to get sufficient conditions for the existence of nontrivial solutions. This gives us possible upper bounds of ranks of PPT entangled edge states and their partial transposes. We will focus on the multi-partite cases which are much more delicate than the bi-partite cases. We use the notion of permanents of matrices as well as techniques from algebraic geometry through the discussion.

Various notions of positivity for bi-linear maps and applications to tri-partite entanglement

We consider bi-linear analogues of $s$-positivity for linear maps. The dual objects of these notions can be described in terms of Schimdt ranks for tri-tensor products and Schmidt numbers for tri-partite quantum states. These tri-partite versions of Schmidt numbers cover various kinds of bi-separability, and so we may interpret witnesses for those in terms of bi-linear maps. We give concrete examples of witnesses for various kinds of three qubit entanglement.

Three-qubit entanglement witnesses with the full spanning properties

We construct three-qubit entanglement witnesses with the properties that all the partial transposes have the spanning properties. These witnesses determine faces for separable states whose interior lies in the interior of PPT states, and so they detect sets of PPT entangled states with nonempty interiors. These witnesses also detect all kinds of bi-separable pure product states. Our construction depends on the observation that multi-partite entanglement witnesses correspond to multi-linear maps which are positive.

Construction of exposed indecomposable positive linear maps between matrix algebras

We construct a large class of indecomposable positive linear maps from the $2\times 2$ matrix algebra into the $4\times 4$ matrix algebra, which generate exposed extreme rays of the convex cone of all positive maps. We show that extreme points of the dual faces for separable states arising from these maps are parametrized by the Riemann sphere, and the convex hulls of the extreme points arising from a circle parallel to the equator have the exactly same properties with the convex hull of the trigonometric moment curve studied from combinatorial topology. Any interior points of the dual faces are $2\otimes 4$ boundary separable states with full ranks. We exhibit concrete examples of such states.

Multi-partite separable states with unique decompositions and construction of three qubit entanglement with positive partial transpose

We investigate conditions on a finite set of multi-partite product vectors for which separable states with corresponding product states have unique decomposition, and show that this is true in most cases if the number of product vectors is sufficiently small. In the three qubit case, generic five dimensional spaces give rise to faces of the convex set consisting of all separable states, which are affinely isomorphic to the five dimensional simplex with six vertices. As a byproduct, we construct three qubit entangled PPT edge states of rank four with explicit formulae. This covers those entanglement which cannot be constructed from unextendible product basis.

Global geometric difference between separable and Positive partial transpose states

In the convex set of all $3\ot 3$ states with positive partial transposes, we show that one can take two extreme points whose convex combinations belong to the interior of the convex set. Their convex combinations may be even in the interior of the convex set of all separable states. In general, we need at least $mn$ extreme points to get an interior point by their convex combination, for the case of the convex set of all $m\ot n$ separable states. This shows a sharp distinction between PPT states and separable states. We also consider the same questions for positive maps and decomposable maps.

Separable states with unique decompositions

We search for faces of the convex set consisting of all separable states, which are affinely isomorphic to simplices, to get separable states with unique decompositions. In the two-qutrit case, we found that six product vectors spanning a five dimensional space give rise to a face isomorphic to the 5-dimensional simplex with six vertices, under suitable linear independence assumption. If the partial conjugates of six product vectors also span a 5-dimensional space, then this face is inscribed in the face for PPT states whose boundary shares the fifteen 3-simplices on the boundary of the 5-simplex. The remaining boundary points consist of PPT entangled edge states of rank four. We also show that every edge state of rank four arises in this way. If the partial conjugates of the above six product vectors span a 6-dimensional space then we have a face isomorphic to 5-simplex, whose interior consists of separable states with unique decompositions, but with non-symmetric ranks. We also construct a face isomorphic to the 9-simplex. As applications, we give answers to questions in the literature \cite{chen_dj_semialg,chen_dj_ext_PPT}, and construct $3\ot 3$ PPT states of type (9,5). For the qubit-qudit cases with $d\ge 3$, we also show that $(d+1)$-dimensional subspaces give rise to faces isomorphic to the $d$-simplices, in most cases.

Geometry for separable states and construction of entangled states with positive partial transposes

We construct faces of the convex set of all $2\otimes 4$ bipartite separable states, which are affinely isomorphic to the simplex $Δ_{9}$ with ten extreme points. Every interior point of these faces is a separable state which has a unique decomposition into 10 product states, even though ranks of the state and its partial transpose are 5 and 7, respectively. We also note that the number 10 is greater than $2\times 4$, to disprove a conjecture on the lengths of qubit-qudit separable states. This face is inscribed in the corresponding face of the convex set of all PPT states so that sub-simplices $Δ_k$ of $Δ_{9}$ share the boundary if and only if $k\le 5$. This enables us to find a large class of $2\otimes 4$ PPT entangled edge states with rank five.

Faces for two qubit separable states and the convex hulls of trigonometric moment curves

We analyze the facial structures of the convex set consisting of all two qubit separable states. One of faces is a four dimensional convex body generated by the trigonometric moment curve arising from polyhedral combinatorics. Another one is an eight dimensional convex body, which is the convex hull of a homeomorphic image of the two dimensional sphere. Extreme points consist of points on the surface, and any two of them determines an edge. We also reconstruct the trigonometric moment curve in any even dimensional affine space using the qubit-qudit systems, and characterize the facial structures of the convex hull.
