Quiver Invariants from Intrinsic Higgs States

In study of four-dimensional BPS states, quiver quantum mechanics plays a central role. The Coulomb phases capture the multi-centered nature of such states, and are well understood in the context of wall-crossing. The Higgs phases are given typically by F-term-induced complete intersections in the ambient D-term-induced toric varieties, and the ground states can be far more numerous than the Coulomb phase counterparts. We observe that the Higgs phase BPS states are naturally and geometrically grouped into two parts, with one part given by the pulled-back cohomology from the D-term-induced ambient space. We propose that these pulled-back states are in one-to-one correspondence with the Coulomb phase states. This also leads us to conjecture that the index associated with the rest, intrinsic to the Higgs phase,is a fundamental invariant of quivers, independent of branches. For simple circular quivers, these intrinsic Higgs states belong to the middle cohomology and thus are all angular momentum singlets, supporting the single-center black hole interpretation.

Heterotic Bundles on Calabi-Yau Manifolds with Small Picard Number

We undertake a systematic scan of vector bundles over spaces from the largest database of known Calabi-Yau three-folds, in the context of heterotic string compactification. Specifically, we construct positive rank five monad bundles over Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties, with the number of Kahler moduli equal to one, two, and three and extract physically interesting models. We select models which can lead to three families of matter after dividing by a freely-acting discrete symmetry and including Wilson lines. About 2000 such models on two manifolds are found.

Combinatorics in N = 1 Heterotic Vacua

We briefly review an algorithmic strategy to explore the landscape of heterotic E8 \times E8 vacua, in the context of compactifying smooth Calabi-Yau three-folds with vector bundles. The Calabi-Yau three-folds are algebraically realised as hypersurfaces in toric varieties and a large class of vector bundles are constructed thereon as monads. In the spirit of searching for Standard-like heterotic vacua, emphasis is placed on the integer combinatorics of the model-building programme.

Heterotic Models from Vector Bundles on Toric Calabi-Yau Manifolds

We systematically approach the construction of heterotic E_8 X E_8 Calabi-Yau models, based on compact Calabi-Yau three-folds arising from toric geometry and vector bundles on these manifolds. We focus on a simple class of 101 such three-folds with smooth ambient spaces, on which we perform an exhaustive scan and find all positive monad bundles with SU(N), N=3,4,5 structure groups, subject to the heterotic anomaly cancellation constraint. We find that anomaly-free positive monads exist on only 11 of these toric three-folds with a total number of bundles of about 2000. Only 21 of these models, all of them on three-folds realizable as hypersurfaces in products of projective spaces, allow for three families of quarks and leptons. We also perform a preliminary scan over the much larger class of semi-positive monads which leads to about 44000 bundles with 280 of them satisfying the three-family constraint. These 280 models provide a starting point for heterotic model building based on toric three-folds.

Generalised cosmological scaling solutions

Motivated by the recent interest in cosmologies arising from energy density modifications to the Friedmann equation, we analyse the scaling behaviour for a broad class of these cosmologies comprised of scalar fields and background barotropic fluid sources. In particular, we determine the corresponding scalar field potentials which lead to attractor scaling solutions in a wide class of braneworld and dark energy scenarios. We show how a number of recent proposals for modifying the Friedmann equation can be thought of as being dual to one another, and determine the conditions under which such dualities arise.

Cosmological evolution of general scalar fields in a brane-world cosmology

We study the cosmology of a general scalar field and barotropic fluid during the early stage of a brane-world where the Friedmann constraint is dominated by the square of the energy density. Assuming both the scalar field and fluid are confined to the brane, we find a range of behaviour depending on the form of the potential. Generalising an approach developed for a standard Friedmann cosmology, in \cite{delaMacorra:1999ff}, we show that the potential dependence $V(ϕ)$ can be described through a parameter $λ\equiv -\sqrt{2} m_5^{3/2} V'/(\sqrt{H}V)$, where $m_5$ is the 5-dimensional Planck mass, $H$ is the Hubble parameter and $V' \equiv \frac{dV}{dϕ}$. For the case where $λ$ asymptotes to zero, we show that the solution exhibits stable inflationary behaviour. On the other hand if it approaches a finite constant, then $V(ϕ) \propto \frac{1}{ϕ^2}$. For $λ\to \infty$ asymptotically, we find examples where it does so both with and without oscillating. In the latter case, the barotropic fluid dominates the scalar filed asymptotically. Finally we point out an interesting duality which leads to identical evolution equations in the high energy $ρ^2$ dominated regime and the low energy $ρ$ dominated regime.
