Neutrino propagation in the neutron star with uncertainties from nuclear, hadron, and particle physics

In the present work, we investigate the neutral-current neutrino-nucleon scattering in the nuclear medium using various energy-density functional (EDF) models such as the KIDS (Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU) and SLy4, together with the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model for the nucleon form factors at finite density. The differential cross section (DCS) and neutrino mean free path (NMFP) are computed numerically, considering the density-dependent nucleon form factors (DDFF) and neutrino structural properties such as the neutrino magnetic moment (NMM) and its electric charge radius (NCR). It turns out that the DDFF decreases the scattering cross-section, while the NCR increases it considerably. The effect of the NMM turns out to be almost negligible. We also observe that the value of the neutron effective mass is of importance in the neutron-star cooling process, indicating that for the neutron effective mass larger than the mass in free space, the neutrino can interact with matter at densities $ρ\gtrsim 1.5 ρ_0$ in the neutron star with radius 13 km.

Double-strangeness exchange reactions in a hybrid Regge-plus-resonance approach

We investigate double-strangeness exchange reactions, $K^-p\to K^+Ξ^-$ and $K^-p\to K^0Ξ^0$, using an effective Lagrangian approach based on a hybrid Regge-plus-resonance model involving rescattering diagrams. We consider the background processes that include $Λ$, $Σ$, and $Σ(1385)$ Regge trajectories in the $u$ channel and the $s$-channel Born-term diagrams. The $s$-channel hyperon resonances account for the bump structures in the total cross sections. The $s$-channel $Λ(2100,7/2^-)$ and $Σ(2030,7/2^+)$ resonances contribute significantly, and the $Σ(2250)$ resonance favors $J^P = 7/2^-$. The interference pattern between the $Λ(2100,7/2^-)$ and $Σ(2030,7/2^+)$ amplitudes is essential for describing forward differential cross sections in the resonance region $2.07 < \sqrt{s} < 2.15$ GeV. The absence of the $S=-2$ meson leads to the inclusion of the meson-baryon rescattering diagrams to describe the $K^- p \to KΞ$ reaction data, proving the significant contribution of the $(ϕ,ρ,ω)$--$(Λ,Σ)$ rescattering diagrams.

Parton Distribution Functions for Pseudoscalar Mesons in the COnfining Effective Chiral Quark Theory

This review paper presents the gluon, sea, and valence quark distributions of the pseudoscalar (PS) mesons. The calculations of the parton structure of PS mesons are performed using the Bethe-Salpeter equation-Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (BSE-NJL) model, which offers a clear description of the dynamical chiral symmetry breaking (D$χ$SB) of the low-energy nonperturbative quantum chromodynamics (QCD), with the help of the Schwinger proper-time regularization scheme that simulates the color QCD confinement. Our results for the dynamical quark mass -- which emerged from the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking (S$χ$SB) -- are generated via the chiral condensate in the chiral limit and beyond. Results for the valence parton distribution functions for the PS meson at the factorization scale $Q = 2$ GeV are in excellent agreement with experimental data and the gluon distribution for the pion fitted well with the lattice QCD and Jefferson Lab Angular Momentum (JAM) QCD global fit analysis.

Updated analyses of gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon from the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral quark model

In this work, we investigate the gluon distribution functions for the pion and kaon, in addition to the improved result of the valence-quark ones, in the gauge-invariant nonlocal chiral-quark model (NL$χ$QM), in which the momentum dependence of the quark interactions is properly taken into account. We then analyze the gluon distribution functions, generated dynamically through the splitting functions in the DGLAP QCD evolution. By comparing with the recent lattice QCD results and JAM global analyses, it is found that the present numerical results for the gluon parton distribution functions for the pion exhibit a remarkable agreement, followed by the valence up-quark distribution results for the pion by reproducing the reanalyzed experimental data. Our prediction on the gluon distribution functions for the kaon is also consistent with the recent lattice data for the kaon within the errors.

Exotic properties of N^*(1895) and its impact on photoproduction of light hyperons

In this work, we outline the findings of our recent study of the properties of $N^*(1895)$ and its consequential impacts on the cross sections of the photoproduction of $Λ(1405)$. Further, we discuss the possibility of the existence of an isovector state, with the mass similar to $Λ(1405)$, which we refer to as $Σ(1400)$. With the idea of motivating experimental investigations of $Σ(1400)$, we have studied its photoproduction process and determined the respective cross sections and polarization observables. We have studied also the coupling of $N^*(1895)$ to $KΣ(1400)$ and found that it gives an important contribution to the cross sections near the threshold. In the process, we have determined the branching ratios of the decay of $N^*(1895)$, to the final states involving $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1400)$, to be in the range of 6-7 MeV. Our findings can motivate consideration of alternative processes in partial wave analyses of experimental data, when studying the properties of $N^*(1895)$.

Effect of nucleon effective mass and symmetry energy on the neutrino mean free path in a neutron star

The Korea-IBS-Daegu-SKKU energy density functional (KIDS-EDF) models, constructed from the perturbative expansion of the energy density in nuclear matter, have been successfully and widely applied in describing the properties of finite nuclei and infinite nuclear matter. In the present work, we extend the applications of the KIDS-EDF models to investigate the implications of the nucleon effective mass and nuclear symmetry energy for the properties of neutron stars (NSs) and neutrino interaction with the NS constituent matter in the linear response approximation (LRA). At fixed neutrino energy and momentum transfer, we analyze the total differential cross section of neutrino, the neutrino mean free path (NMFP), and the NS mass-radius (M-R) relations. Remarkable results are given by the KIDS0-m*87 and SLy4 models, in which $M_n^* /M \lesssim 1$, and their NMFPs are quite higher in comparison with those obtained from the KIDS0, KIDS-A, and KIDS-B models, which result in $M_n^*/M \gtrsim 1$. For the KIDS0, KIDS-A, and KIDS-B models, we obtain $λ\lesssim R_{\textrm{NS}}$, indicating that these models could predict the slow NS cooling and neutrino trapping in NSs. In contrast, the KIDS0-m*87 and SLy4 models yield $λ\gtrsim R_{\textrm{NS}}$ and thus we expect faster NS cooling and a small possibility of neutrino trapping within NSs. We also calculate the NMFP as a function of the neutrino energy and the nuclear matter density and find that the NMFP decreases as the density and neutrino energy increase, which is consistent with the result obtained in the Brussels-Montreal Skyrme (BSk17 and BSk18) models at saturation density.

Gluon and valence quark distributions for the pion and kaon in nuclear matter

In this paper we study the gluon and valence quark distributions in the pion and kaon in nuclear medium for various nuclear densities as well as in vacuum within the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the help of the proper-time regularization scheme which simulates a confinement of QCD. The nuclear medium effect is also determined in the same model for the symmetric nuclear matter. We then analyze the gluon and valence quark distributions for the bound pion and kaon in symmetric nuclear matter as well as those in vacuum. We find that the valence quark and gluon distributions in vacuum have relatively good agreements with the experimental data, the lattice QCD simulations, and the JAM Monte-Carlo (MC) global fit QCD analysis. Evolving to the higher factorization scale $Q = $ 4 GeV, the in-medium gluon and valence-quark distributions of the pion for various nuclear densities are turned out to be almost unchanged in comparison to the vacuum cases. On the contrary, for the kaon, they increase significantly with respect to the densities. Finally, we find that the vacuum gluon distribution for the kaon is smaller than that for the pion, which is consistent with other theoretical predictions. This feature holds for the in-medium gluon distribution in the nuclear density up to the saturation density.

The decay of $N^*$(1895) to light hyperon resonances

In this talk I review the findings of our recent works where we have studied the decay of $N^*(1895)$ and the implications of such properties on the photoproduction of light hyperons. I discuss that meson-baryon interactions play an essential role in describing the nature of $N^*(1895)$ and report the details of our investigation of its decays to different meson-baryon systems and to final states involving $Λ(1405)$ and a proposed $Σ(1400)$. We find that the width of $N^*(1895)$ gets important contributions from the decay to light hyperon resonances. Such an information can be used to look for alternative processes to study $N^*(1895)$ in experimental data.

A study of the elastic $πN$ scattering at finite baryon density

We investigate the elastic $πN$ scattering for the $I=3/2$ channel dominated by the $Δ(1232)$ resonance at finite baryon density $ρ_B$ for the symmetric nuclear matter, employing the effective Lagrangian approach at the tree-level Born approximation. The quark-meson coupling (QMC) model and linear-density approximation are employed to describe the medium modifications for the in-medium baryon properties, such as the nucleon and $Δ$ masses, and $Δ$ full decay width. We first reproduce the experimental data in vacuum by fitting the model parameters, then analyze various physical observables including total and differential cross sections, proton-spin asymmetry in medium. It turns out that the $Δ$-resonance contribution becomes diminished with respect to $ρ_B$, due to the weaker $πN$-interaction strength in medium. Beyond the $Δ$-resonance region $\sqrt{s}\gtrsim1.5$ GeV, the cross sections are almost independent of the density. The present results will be useful to understand the role of the $Δ$ resonance in the neutron-star equation of state (EoS) as well as in relativistic heavy-ion collision experiments.

QCD chiral condensate and pseudoscalar-meson properties in the nuclear medium at finite temperature

The pion and kaon properties in a nuclear medium at nonvanishing temperature as well as the QCD chiral condensate in the presence of a magnetic field for various baryon densities are studied in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model with the help of the proper-time regularization (PTR) scheme, simulating a QCD confinement. The density dependent of the quark mass in symmetric nuclear matter is obtained from the quark-meson coupling (QMC) model, which shares the same covariant feature with the NJL model, at quark level. We then analyze the QCD chiral condensates, and dynamical masses for various baryon densities at finite temperature and magnetic field as well as the pion and kaon masses, pion and kaon weak-decay constants, pion-and kaon-quark coupling constants, and wave function renormalization factors for various baryon densities at finite temperature. We find that the QCD chiral condensates suppress with increasing temperature and baryon density and enhance under the presence of a magnetic field, which are consistent with other model predictions. Interestingly, the wave function renormalization factors for the pion and kaon increase with respect to temperature and reduce as the baryon density increases are found.

Dynamical model of $ϕ$ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and $^4He$

We investigate $ϕ$ meson photoproduction on the nucleon and the \nuclide[4]{He} targets within a dynamical model approach based on a Hamiltonian which describes the production mechanisms by the Pomeron-exchange, meson-exchanges, $ϕ$ radiations, and nucleon resonance excitations mechanisms. The final $ϕN$ interactions are included being described by the gluon-exchange, direct $ϕN$ couplings, and the box-diagrams arising from the couplings with $πN$, $ρN$, $KΛ$, and $KΣ$ channels. The parameters of the Hamiltonian are determined by the experimental data of $γp \to ϕp$ from the CLAS Collaboration. The resulting Hamiltonian is then used to predict the coherent $ϕ$-meson production on the \nuclide[4]{He} targets by using the distorted-wave impulse approximation. For the proton target, the final $ϕN$ rescattering effects, as required by the unitarity condition, are found to be very weak, which supports the earlier calculations in the literature. For the \nuclide[4]{He} targets, the predicted differential cross sections are in good agreement with the data obtained by the LEPS Collaboration. The role of each mechanism in this reaction is discussed and predictions for a wide range of scattering angles are presented, which can be tested in future experiments.

Studies on the $K^*Σ$ bound-state via $K^+p\to K^+ϕ\,p$

In the present work, we investigate the hidden-strangeness production process in the $S=+1$ channel via $K^+p\to K^+ϕ\,p$, focussing on the exotic \textit{pentaquark} molecular $K^*Σ$ bound state, assigned by $P^+_s(2071,3/2^-)$. For this purpose, we employ the effective Lagrangian approach in the tree-level Born approximation. Using the experimental and theoretical inputs for the exotic state and for the ground-state hadron interactions, the numerical results show a small but obvious peak structure from $P^+_s$ with the signal-to-background ratio $\approx1.7\,\%$, and it is enhanced in the backward-scattering region of the outgoing $K^+$ in the center-of-mass frame. We also find that the contribution from the $K^*(1680,1^-)$ meson plays an important role to reproduce the data. The proton-spin polarizations are taken into account to find a way to reduce the background. The effects of the possible $27$-plet pentaquark $Θ^{++}_{27}$ is discussed as well.

Double-strangeness production in $Λp\to K^+X$ reaction

We investigate $S=-2$ production from the $Λp\to K^+X$ reactions within the effective Lagrangian approach. The $Λp\to K^+ΛΛ$ and $Λp\to K^+Ξ^-p$ reactions are considered to find the lightest $S=-2$ system, which is $H$-dibaryon. We assume that the $H(2250)\toΛΛ$, and $H(2270)\toΞ^-p$ decays with the intrinsic decay width of 1 MeV. According to our calculations, the total cross-sections for $Λp\to K^+ΛΛ$ and $Λp\to K^+Ξ^-p$ reactions were found to be of the order of a few $μ$b in the $Λ$ beam momentum range of up to 5 GeV$/c$. Furthermore, the direct access of information regarding the interference patterns between the $H$-dibaryon and non-resonant contributions was demonstrated.

Photoproduction of $Λ^*$ and $Σ^*$ resonances with $J^P=1/2^-$ off the proton

We study the photoproduction of the $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1400)$ hyperon resonances, the latter of which is not a well established state. We evaluate the $s$-, $t$- and $u$-channel diagrams in the Born approximation by employing the effective Lagrangians. A new ingredient is the inclusion of a nucleon resonance $N^*(1895)$ that is dynamically generated with predictions for its coupling to the $KΛ(1405)$ and $KΣ(1400)$ channels. To extend the applicability of the model to energies beyond the threshold region, we consider a Regge model for the $t$-channel $K$- and $K^*$-exchanges. Our results are in good agreement with the CLAS data available on $Λ(1405)$, while for $Σ(1400)$ we predict observables for its production. We also provide polarization observables for both hyperon productions, which can be useful in future experimental investigations. The present study provides new information on the nucleon resonance $N^*(1895)$ which can be an alternative source for generating the hyperon resonances $Λ(1405)$ and $Σ(1400)$.

Unpolarized Dihadron Fragmentation Functions in Nonlocal Chiral Quark Model

We have calculated the unpolarized dihadron fragmentation functions (uDiFFs) of pions and kaons using the nonlocal chiral-quark model (NLChQM) and evolved our results to the transferred momentum scale Q$^2$=4$\mathrm{GeV}^2$ by the QCD evolution equations. These uDiFFs have also been computed in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio-jet (NJL-jet) model for the sake of comparison. We find that there is substantial difference between the results of these two models. Furthermore, the DiFFs of $u\to π^{+}π^{-}$ and $g\to π^{+}π^{-}$ at $Q^2=109\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$ in these two models are presented in comparison with the parametrizations fitted by the Monte Carlo event generator JETSET.

Investigation of electroproduction of $ϕ$ mesons off protons

We investigate $ϕ$-meson electroproduction off the proton target, i.e., $γ^* p \to ϕp$, by employing a tree-level effective Lagrangian approach in the kinematical ranges of $Q^2$ = (0$-$4) $\mathrm{GeV}^2$, $W$ = (2$-$5) GeV, and $|t| \leq 2\,\mathrm{GeV}^2$. In addition to the universally accepted Pomeron exchange, we consider various meson exchanges in the $t$ channel with the Regge method. Direct $ϕ$-meson radiations in the $s$- and $u$-channels are also taken into account. We find that the $Q^2$ dependence of the transverse ($σ_{\mathrm{T}}$) and longitudinal ($σ_{\mathrm{L}}$) cross sections are governed by Pomeron and $(a_0,f_0)$ scalar meson exchanges, respectively. Meanwhile, the contributions of $(π,η)$ pseudoscalar- and $f_1(1285)$ axial-vector-meson exchanges are much more suppressed. The results of the interference cross sections ($σ_{\mathrm{LT}}, σ_{\mathrm{LT}}$) and the spin-density matrix elements indicate that $s$-channel helicity conservation holds at $Q^2$ = (1$-$4) $\mathrm{GeV}^2$. The result of the parity asymmetry yield $P \simeq 0.95$ at $W$ = 2.5 GeV, meaning that natural-parity exchange dominates the reaction process. Our numerical results are in fair agreement with the experimental data and thus the use of our effective Reggeized model is justified over the considered kinematical ranges of $Q^2$, $W$, and $t$.

The use of the canonical approach in effective models of QCD

We clarify regions where the canonical approach works well at the finite temperature and density in the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) and Polyakov-NJL (PNJL) models. The canonical approach is a useful method for avoiding the sign problem in lattice QCD simulations at finite density, but it involves some parameters. We find that number densities computed from the canonical approach are consistent with exact values in most of the confinement phase within the parameters, which are applicable in lattice QCD.

Pomeron, nucleon-resonance, and $(0^+,0^-,1^+)$-meson contributions in $ϕ$-meson photoproduction

We investigate the reaction mechanism of the $ϕ$-meson photoproduction off the proton target, i.e., $γp\toϕp$, up to $\sqrt{s}=2.8$ GeV. For this purpose, we employ an effective Lagrangian approach in the tree-level Born approximation, and we employ various experimental and theoretical inputs. As a theoretical setup, the vectorlike Pomeron ($C=+1$) is taken into account as a parameterized two-gluon exchange contribution. We also consider $f_1(1285)$ axial-vector-meson, ($π,η$) pseudoscalar-meson, and ($a_0,f_0$) scalar-meson exchanges in the $t$ channel, in addition to the experimentally confirmed nucleon resonances, such as $N^*(2000,5/2^+)$ and $N^*(2300,1/2^+)$, for the direct $ϕ$-meson radiations in the $s$ and $u$ channels. We provide numerical results for the total and differential cross sections as well as the spin-density matrices in the Gottfried-Jackson, Adair, and helicity frames. We observe that, together with the universally accepted pomeron contribution, the considered meson and nucleon-resonance contributions play significant roles in reproducing the experimental data for the forward and backward $ϕ$-meson scattering-angle regions, respectively, indicating the nontrivial interferences between mesonic and baryonic contributions.
