Temporal decay of strong solutions for generalized Newtonian fluids with variable power-law index

We consider the motion of a power-law-like generalized Newtonian fluid in R^3, where the power-law index is a variable function. This system of nonlinear partial differential equations arises in mathematical models of electrorheological fluids. The aim of this paper is to investigate the decay properties of strong solutions for the model, based on the Fourier splitting method. We first prove that the L^2-norm of the solution has the decay rate (1 + t)^{-3/4}. If the H^1-norm of the initial data is sufficiently small, we further show that the derivative of the solution decays in L^2-norm at the rate (1 + t)^{-5/4}.

Existence of global weak solutions for unsteady motions of incompressible chemically reacting generalized Newtonian fluids

We study a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the unsteady motions of incompressible chemically reacting non-Newtonian fluids. The system under consideration consists of the generalized Navier-Stokes equations with a power-law type stress-strain relation, where the power-law index depends on the concentration of a chemical, coupled to a convection-diffusion equation for the concentration. This system of equations arises in the rheology of the synovial fluid found in the cavities of synovial joints. We prove the existence of global weak solutions of the non-stationary model by using the Galerkin method combined with generalized monotone operator theory and parabolic De Giorgi-Nash-Moser theory. As the governing equations involve a nonlinearity with a variable power-law index, our proofs exploit the framework of generalized Sobolev spaces with variable integrability exponent.

Finite element approximation of steady flows of generalized Newtonian fluids with concentration-dependent power-law index

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations describing the motion of an incompressible chemically reacting generalized Newtonian fluid in three space dimensions. The governing system consists of a steady convection-diffusion equation for the concentration and a generalized steady power-law-type fluid flow model for the velocity and the pressure, where the viscosity depends on both the shear-rate and the concentration through a concentration-dependent power-law index. The aim of the paper is to perform a mathematical analysis of a finite element approximation of this model. We formulate a regularization of the model by introducing an additional term in the conservation-of-momentum equation and construct a finite element approximation of the regularized system. We show the convergence of the finite element method to a weak solution of the regularized model and prove that weak solutions of the regularized problem converge to a weak solution of the original problem.

Finite element approximation of an incompressible chemically reacting non-Newtonian fluid

We consider a system of nonlinear partial differential equations modelling the steady motion of an incompressible non-Newtonian fluid, which is chemically reacting. The governing system consists of a steady convection-diffusion equation for the concentration and the generalized steady Navier-Stokes equations, where the viscosity coefficient is a power-law type function of the shear-rate, and the coupling between the equations results from the concentration-dependence of the power-law index. This system of nonlinear partial differential equations arises in mathematical models of the synovial fluid found in the cavities of moving joints. We construct a finite element approximation of the model and perform the mathematical analysis of the numerical method in the case of two space dimensions. Key technical tools include discrete counterparts of the Bogovski\uı operator, De Giorgi's regularity theorem in two dimensions, and the Acerbi-Fusco Lipschitz truncation of Sobolev functions, in function spaces with variable integrability exponents.
